Fee-based Professional Counseling is available in the Maloney Center at IHM for individuals, couples and families. Contact Marianela Matheus, M.Ed. at 678-310-8122.

As we enter our annual Stewardship Renewal of Time, Talent & Treasure, we will provide information in this space about our many IHM ministries and organiza-tions, and how you can return to God the many blessings you enjoy through your gift of Time. Our ministries are divided into four major categories (pillars): Wor-ship, Education, Service and Community. We will explore Service this week.

THE SERVICE PILLAR

Creative Hands – Meets weekly on Wednesday to encourage and pray. We knot and sew for Grady Hospital and other charities.

Crossroads Community Ministry (Soup Kitchen) – Helps to prepare and serve a hot meal for the homeless every Friday morning at a downtown Atlanta soup kitchen.

HIV/AIDS Ministry – Mission is to educate ourselves and the parish about HIV/AIDS and to serve the HIV/AIDS community by fostering compassion and mobilizing parish support for those infected or affected by the disease.

Ministry to the Sick & Homebound – Connects the worshipping community with parishioners who are homebound for any reason. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion visit on regular basis for sacrament, prayer and compan-ionship.

Mustard Seed Communities – Provides for children and adults with disabili-ties, who have been abandoned the care and companionship they need. IHM ministry serves through 2 mission trips annually to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic and ongoing support throughout the year with special projects.

Divine Playtime – Childcare ministry offered on a daily basis from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Also offers Nursery services for all weekend Masses.

Respect Life Ministry – Mission is to advocate, promote and protect the digni-ty, sanctity and unique personhood of each human life from conception until natural death. We uphold a consistent ethic of life and desire to be part of Christ’s healing mission in the world.

St. Vincent de Paul Society – IHM SVdP members make home visits and as-sist families with rent, utilities and food as well as support the SVdP Support Center Food Pantry. Donations for food and clothing are collected 3-4 times per year. SVdP also runs the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas giving programs.

Scouting – Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are all an active part of parish life developing young men and women who will be good citizens and active in their church, community, nation and world.

Social Justice Committee – Mission to raise awareness of Catholic Social Teaching through education, programs, liturgy and community example by car-rying out the social and ecumenical mission of the Catholic Church in accord-ance with Catholic Social Teaching.

Stepping Stones Ministry to the Grieving – Support those who have experi-enced the death of a loved one through compassion support and prayer. Mem-bers pray for the deceased and their family, follow up with the bereaved, send tokens of comfort, provide resources for their grief journey and assist with the annual Mass of Remembrance.

GriefShare – A Christ-based biblical support program for those grieving the death of a loved one. Volunteers for this ministry serve a facilitators for sup-ports groups and as greeters.

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH STATEMENT OF INCOME AND EXPENSES

QUARTER AND YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2018

To the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Family: In partnership with Rich Plachta, Business Manager, the Parish Finance Council has prepared this update to keep you informed about the financial state of our parish. Presented above is a comparison of revenue, expenses and net income for Fiscal Year 2018 (July 2017 to June 2018) vs. Fiscal Year 2017. Our objective is to give you a comprehensive financial view for our parish as a complement to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarter updates provided throughout the budget year. For the 2018 fiscal year we were blessed to have total revenues of $2,061,579, which exceeded last year by $68,842 or 3.2%. This was pri-marily driven by total offertory collections from our parishioners of $1,901,586, which exceeded last year by $86,266 or 4.8%. E-Giving rep-resented 39% of total offertory (vs. 38% last year) and reached a record level of $746,968 for the year. We were very successful in the 2017 Arch-bishop’s Annual Appeal, resulting in $78,573 being refunded to IHM, an increase of 26.2%. This continues to be an important source of funding for the parish. We thank you for your continued generosity and commit-ment to our parish and take the stewardship of these funds as our utmost responsibility. Total Expenses for the year were $2,000,239, an increase of $84,628 or 4.4% over last year. The primary drivers of increased expenses were Reli-gious Education ($44,177 increase, primarily related to the expansion of our Youth Ministry programs); Archdiocesan Support of outreach pro-grams outside of our parish ($29,954 increase); and Archdiocesan School Subsidy provided to assist other families in our Archdiocese obtain a Catholic education ($19,643 increase). These increases were partially offset by Liturgy, Ministries & Stewardship expense reductions of

$14,122; Rectory expense savings of $13,750 generated by Monsignor Al and Father Javier moving into temporary apart-ments while we con-tinue to make pro-gress on the construc-tion of our new rec-tory; and interest expense reductions of $10,903 directly attributable to continued debt reduction payments made in the year. Our parish has demonstrated the ability to build an amazing church and fund the construction costs. We have accelerated our debt payments from $183,000 in 2016, to $259,458 in 2017, to $303,964 this year resulting in a remaining principal balance of $792,292. We have been able to accom-plish this in part through generous contributions to Parish Debt Reduction second collections of $209,705 and through the prudent management of our parish resources. In the accompanying graph you’ll see the exception-al progress we have made in paying down our debt principal. Once again, we thank you for your continued commitment to IHM. If you have any questions about this report, please do not hesitate to contact me, Rich Plachta, or Monsignor Jowdy. Yours truly, Brad Gifford, Finance Council Chair

Q What happens at a session for inquirers?

A The Period of Evangelization and Precatechumenate is for inquirers to “come and see”. The Gospel is pro-claimed, and inquirers share their own stories, exploring how the Gospel throws light on their lives. With the cat-echists who accompany and share faith with them, they reflect on experiences of doubt, joy, searching, pain, and relationships, and explore the ways that God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit have already been present in their lives. It is a time to ask questions, discuss what they have heard about Catholic Christian Faith, to meet people in the community, and see for them-selves how faith is practiced. For more information about the process of Christian Initiation at IHM, contact Drew Denton in the parish office.

RCIA SPONSORS Do you love your Catholic faith? Are you encouraged by the growing number of peo-ple who are joining the Catholic Church as adults? We need your help to welcome our newest members. As an RCIA Sponsor you will be paired with a candidate (baptized adult from another Christian tradition) or a catechumen (unbaptized adult) whom you will accompany through the process of sacramental initiation. You do not have to be an “expert” or a perfect example. All you need is a willingness to support, pray for, and connect someone to our Catholic community. For more information about Chris-tian Initiation at IHM, contact Drew Denton in the parish office.

FIRST EUCHARIST FOR CHILDREN 2018-2019 Mark your calendars! Our first meeting for parents of First Communion candi-dates will take place on September 17 at 6:30 pm in the church. Eligible students will receive their First Eucharist during regular Mass times on the weekend of May 4-5, 2019. Preparation will take place throughout the school year, including the student’s first celebration of the Sacrament of Penance, which will occur at special penance services later in the fall.

BISHOP BARRON’S—THE MASS Bishop Robert Barron’s newest series, The Mass, is coming to IHM on September 9! Join us in the school library, 10:15-11:15 a.m., for Part 1 of this six-part series. Whether you are a lifelong Mass-goer or a newly initiated Catholic, you will come away with a deepened appreciation for the “source and summit” of our faith.

National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence · www.ihmschool.org

JUST BAKERY! This Sunday September 9, we welcome “Just Bakery” to IHM. Your purchase of a cookie or a loaf this morning after the 9:00 or 11:30 mass in the historic church helps this local non-profit provide employment and a just wage to recently-resettled refugees in the Atlanta area.

ALTAR SERVER APPRECIATION! Saturday, September 22 Monsignor Al and Father Carlos invite all of the parish’s Altar Servers to the Atlanta United match against Real Salt Lake on Saturday, September 22. Dinner in the school cafeteria at 5:00 will be followed by a bus trip to Mercedes Benz Stadium, returning to church around 9:30 p.m. Per-mission forms are available in the church ministers’ room and must be signed and returned by next Sunday, September 16. For more information, contact Shelly White at 404-636-1418 ext 232 or [email protected].

HOME SIMPLIFIED September 11 The Women’s Club invites you to “Home Simplified”: Re-becca Phillips (Deacon Mike Byrne's daughter) who will speak on her journey as a designer and mom of four. Rebec-ca and her husband recently moved into a 2 bedroom house and she will testify to us that decluttering and downsizing has changed her life. She will also share tips and strategies with us on how to be organized and let go of some of our life's clutter. This meeting will take place this Tuesday at 7pm in the lower level. RSVP at: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C084CA5A92FAA8-home.

BLOOD DRIVE September 12 Our next Red Cross Blood Drive is this Wednesday, Septem-ber 12, 3:00-8:00 PM, in the historic church. Visit red-crossblood.org and use the sponsor code “IHM” to schedule an appointment, or call Nikki VanDerGrinten, 770-986-4996. We will also be conducting sign-ups in the narthex this weekend and next. The cut-off date for donor eligibility is July 25. Chick-Fil-A coupons will be given to all who do-nate. Walk-ins are welcome. Remember, your donation may save or extend the life of three people!

GRIEFSHARE September 12 GriefShare is a bereavement support group open to anyone in the Atlanta community and IHM parish, sponsored by the IHM Stepping Stones Ministry. The group members will discuss a different topic at every session. All are welcome to join as their schedule allows. The group meets on Wednes-days, 7:00-8:45pm, starting September 12. For more infor-mation contact Margaretann Harris at IHMGriefShare@ gmail.com or 404-483-3559. More information can also be found on the parish website. This week’s topic is “Is this normal?”

Thank you for your past support of GRACE Scholars and IHM School. For 2018, IHM received $104,626 from 136 generous donors! That means 25 IHM students have been GRACE-d with a Catholic education! For the 2019 tax year, the state tax cap has increased from $58 million to $100 million... an opportunity to make an IHM education a reality for nearly twice as many deserving students! The deadline to pre-register is December 15, 2018, but why wait? Hop aboard the early bus! Visit gracescholars.org and pre-register today.

BLUE MASS September 11 The Archdiocese of Atlanta will celebrate its fourth annual Blue Mass for all public and safety officials and first re-sponders at 10:00am on Tuesday September 11 at the Ca-thedral of Christ the King, 2699 Peachtree Road, NE, Atlan-ta. In the United States, the Blue Mass tradition began in 1934, when Father Thomas Dade of the Archdiocese of Bal-timore formed the Catholic Police and Fireman’s Society, and celebrated the first Blue Mass for police officers and firemen that year.
