What now?Surviving and thriving
after a life-altering impact
William Boggs suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury in 2005 as a result of an automobile accident. In the early days and weeks, the outlook was grim, but Wil-liam has far exceeded the limitations that were ex-pected of him. What his family learned in the process they are now using to help other families dealing with brain injury. Denise Boggs, William’s mother, will speak at a program Tuesday, Sept. 27, at Life Enrichment in Shelby. TBI does not happen to one person. It affects everyone in the family, Denise Boggs says; therefore, she and her husband have established a retreat on a farm near Hiddenite for families to use in the heal-ing process. Although their ministry has conducted retreats for 15 years, they are now using their experiences to help families dealing with TBI. Traumatic Brain Injury is caused by an external trauma to the head or violent movement of the head such as from a fall, car crash, sports injury, or even being shaken. Symptoms can be mild, moderate, or severe. This event is free of charge and open to anyone interested in learning more about TBI - family, friends, doctors, nurses, social workers.

LEC’s new chef, Nancy Fichter, thought she wanted to be an exotic animal veterinarian, but life changed when her dad gave her a book called, Bones Tell Tales. He wanted one of his kids to study archaeology. After she earned a master’s degree in bone research, Nancy traveled to jobs in places like Hong Kong, Iraq, and Africa. In Bosnia, she became fascinated by how poor diet affects the people. This led her to study the anthropology of how food goes from the garden to the table, which prompted her to start her own catering business. Nancy agreed to share her knowledge of culinary skills with the Life Enrichment Center in Kings Mountain by becom-ing the chef there. In more than one way, she has come home. Her father, Barry, was a participant at the Life Enrichment Center in Shelby, and her mother volunteers there. Welcome, Nancy!
From archaeologist
to chef - a journey ‘round
the world & home again.
Participant Ella Mae Ray, above, assists Life Enrich-ment’s new chef, Nancy Fichter, who prepares nutri-tious meals at the Kings Mountain Center but also includes participants of all ages in preparation because cooking is a wonderful therapy to promote self-es-teem. At right, Nancy and Jessica make a salad.
