Presbyterian ‘Connection’ June 2016 Volume 23 Issue 6
IS GOD GIVING AMERICA A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY?
The first week of May we had our annual celebration of “Golden Opportunity Days”. This along with
receiving my friend Dan McNerney’ s newsletter News From The Frontier (Dan is an Associate
Director of Presbyterian Frontier Fellowship.) brought a possible “Golden Opportunity” to my
mind. Is God giving America a “Golden Opportunity” to reach Muslims for Jesus Christ. Dan does a
lot of work with Muslims in the United States as part of his ministry outreach for Jesus. Is the
Lord giving “Christian America” an opportunity to reach immigrant Muslims with the love of
Christ? I have heard a lot of demonic venom but not much Christian love toward Muslims coming to
America.
In his newsletter Dan mentioned having recently returned from taking a group of 19 American
Christians to Egypt and having spent four days in the desert praying along with 400 other
Christians from around the world “asking that the Gospel continue to grow and expand in the Arab
world.” Dan says that “In recent years, the Church in Egypt can barely keep pace with the
dramatic increase of Muslims who are becoming followers of Jesus. According to a number of
different sources, there are now between 2 to 4 million-background believers in Egypt alone. One
of the leaders of this new underground church, who had once been a Muslim cleric, exclaimed, ‘Why
have you Christians been hiding the Gospel from us? It is the key to life which unlocks our souls
and brings light into our hearts and minds. Please stop being so humble and shy about our Lord,
Jesus Christ.’”
A copy of Dan’s newsletter is on the bulletin board in the church narthex. Take time to read it. I
can make you a personal copy of it if you want one.
I see the possibility of the Lord giving America, “Christian America” a Golden Opportunity to lead
immigrant Muslims to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Are we going to treat those trying to
flee from the tyranny of the ISIS form of Islam with the love of Christ or shut the door to
evangelistic opportunity to them? Let’s give a lot of thought and prayer to this. Let’s endeavor to
do it the “Jesus Way”. Let us remember that Jesus is “the Way, the Truth and the Life”.
God bless! Fred

MISSION MINUTE
JUNE-2016
“The important role that Presbyterian leaders have had in the field of health care is renowned worldwide. From the first-class medical centers in major cities throughout America, to the services for children and aging, there is possibly no denomination which has developed more facilities supporting the wellness of our citizens. As it was here in 1961, nine Central Arkansas Presbyterian churches realized the growing needs of the aging and elderly. With unanimous support, Mr. Sam Clippard and other Presbyterian leaders founded Presbyterian Village, which has now operated continuously for 50 years with the sole purpose of nurturing and enriching the lives of the aging. Over the past five decades, we have served nearly 8,000 seniors in their final years. Our facilities have weathered the passage of time. Through independent living, residential care, and skilled nursing, we have provided steadfast support to these vulnerable seniors. As Presbyterians, we can take pride in the legacy of this facility. To continue our standard of care now and in the future, we will construct a new Memory Care Center for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and also a formal Worship and Activity Center.”

General Meeting of PW&M
Tuesday, May 10, 2016 - Memorial Hall
Twelve members of PW&M met for breakfast at our Memorial Hall hosted by Teri Morrow and Elaine Miller. Moderator, Steve Broskovak opened our fellowship time with prayer and we ate together before he brought our meeting to order. Elaine Miller brought us the devotion from the booklet Our Daily Bread.
REPORTS: Secretary, Amy Johnson asked for any changes or corrections to the minutes of our April meeting. There were none so those minutes will be placed on file. She also read three thank-yous from our recent donations to Vera Lloyd Pres. Home and to Flippin Schools Lunch Program and their BackPack program. Amy also brought up a need to re-send the meetings sign-up sheet around since we have dropped “greeters” from our meetings and replaced them with “hosts” that have a different job-description of providing refreshment instead. For our June meeting Teri Morrow and Jewell Riley will be assisted by Amy Johnson, and for the September meeting (after a summer break) Norma and Fred Taylor will take the host duties. Amy will pass the sign-up sheet around again in September for new volunteers.
Treasurer, Mary Kerr presented her April treasurer's report. On April 1 there was a beginning balance of $1333.01, with total receipts of $158.25 and total disbursements of $575.00 to bring an ending balance on April 30 of $916.26. This was approved by all and will be placed on file and on the bulletin board.
Publicity-Vicky Bair could not be present today.
Announcements: Pastor Fred Taylor reminded us of the upcoming Congregational Meeting this Sunday, May 15. He also informed us that he intends to bring to session a motion for our church to become a member of the Bull Shoals Chamber of Commerce again, at the cost of $75 per year. Mary remembered that PW&M once paid those yearly dues from their funds until the C of C canceled our dues. Fred will bring back to us a decision at our June meeting.
Missions: Linda Allensworth could not be present today, but Irene Bere spoke for her regarding the latest plan for our fall fundraiser, the Baked Potato Bash that will be held on Saturday, October 29 (the only Saturday that the Chamber of Commerce said was clear on the city calendar). Chair of the fundraiser, Peni Lloyd will call workers together at yet-to-be-determined dates for meetings in August and September. Thank you, Irene, for the report from Peni.
Ice Cream Social co-chair, Celia Millard was present but had nothing to report for this fundraiser but that it will be held July 16 and that everything is up-to-date on its planning. She will be meeting with chair, Linda Allensworth, hopefully before our June 14 PW&M meeting.
The No-Bake Bake Sale runs through June 5. Donations are coming in, reports our treasurer, Mary.
Amy reminded all PW&M members to save their Best Choice bar codes for PW&M (and Box Top labels for Flippin Schools) and to give generously to our “Dishes” donations and to keep bringing toiletries donations to each meeting for Bull Shoals Food Pantry.
OLD BUSINESS: It is unanimous that Memorial Hall is a good meeting place, and we will continue our monthly meetings here until and/or unless a more appropriate restaurant opens up in town. Our hosts Teri and Elaine treated us very special for this first Memorial Hall breakfast meeting and we thank you!
NEW BUSINESS: Pastor Fred proposed that our PW&M give a monetary donation for Ken and Pam Hobart's granddaughter, Kaitlin McLeod, for her week-long mission trip to Guatemala which will cost her as much as $2000. Irene Bere made a motion that PW&M support Kaitlin with a donation of $50 and Norma Taylor seconded the motion. All were in favor. The information for sending the donation was given to our treasurer, Mary and she will mail a check this month.
OTHER BUSINESS: Next general meeting will be June 14, 2016 at 9:30 at Memorial Hall with Teri Morrow and Jewell Riley and Amy Johnson as hosts and Steve Broskovak giving the devotion.
The meeting was adjourned by Steve at 10:45 AM and Pastor Fred closed in prayer.
Respectfully submitted by Secretary, Amy Johnson

BULL SHOALS FOOD PANTRY – NEWSLETTER
(By the Community, for the Community)
PO Box 691, 1013 Lake Shore Rd, Bull Shoals, AR 72619
————————————————————————————————————————————- March – April 2016
What a busy time of year this is – planting gardens and flowers, working in our yards, and enjoying the wonderful sun, colorful
plants, and warmer weather. Time is flying by and the Pantry is gearing up for some great happenings including:
Walmart Shopping Day Blitz – Food Pantry volunteers will be at the Flippin Walmart on Wednesday, May 4th from 9:00 until
3:00 handing out “shopping lists” of items needed at the Pantry. Anyone who wishes can purchase one or more items on this
list and leave the items with our volunteers when they leave. It is so helpful to be able to stock our shelves with food and
personal care items so that there is plenty for all our clients.
Volunteer Appreciation Picnic – May 21st, 11:00 to 3:00 at Danuser City Park in Bull Shoals. The Food Pantry board will be
supplying all the food and we hope to have a great turnout for this day of appreciation for all our volunteers, and all they do.
July 4th
Jubilee in the Park – Every year on July 4th the Food Pantry has a fund raiser at Danuser City Park with lots of games
for the children, vendors selling their wares, raffle ticket sales for the big give-away in October, Taco in a Bag (such an easy
way to eat taco’s, you have to try them), a car show, and much more ending with a parade at 4:00 p.m. Rosemarie Ward does
such a wonderful job putting this event together, and if you can help her, give her a call, she can always use some “extra hands”
to get this great event going and happening.
In Memory:
On Wednesday, April 20th the Food Pantry presented a plaque in memory of Pastor Dave Mattson, who passed away recently
and was such a moving force in so many things that helped get our Pantry where it is today. Dave’s wife, Anna, their daughter
Katrina and her children were there for the presentation as were others from the area. It was a wonderful time to show our
appreciation for someone who did so much. Dave was Chairman of the Board for many years, and along with his wife, Anna,
helped at many of our fund raisers. Dave and Anna have three children, Katrina, Eric and John, and luckily Katrina was present
for this wonderful event.
Our Community Reaches Out:
The Bull Shoals Lake/White River Chamber of Commerce hosted a cookout at the Bull Shoals Theater for the Arts, for a
High School fishing tournament based out of Texarkana. This was their first time at Bull Shoals fishing our wonderful lake.
Food was collected at the door with over 125 pounds of food being donated to our Pantry. The Chamber was told that this
tournament always collects food for local needs wherever they are fishing. The Chamber also said that this group plans to be
here again next April, so lets be sure to get out there and welcome this great group.
Slinging Iron Indoor Shooting Range is holding a weekly event called Pistol Poker. For more details on the actual event,
please go to their facebook page, but the event is a 50/50 with 50% of the pot going to our Pantry. What a great way to have
fun and help out locally. Also, you can listen to KTLO and/or Twin Lakes radio during their live call-ins for more information.

Till We Speak Again
Well it’s time again for me to get up on my soapbox. This time my dander got raised from a lack of common courtesy. Where is it? Where did it go? Seem to me people are only out for what’s best for them, and too bad for the rest of us.
My momma raised me to say please and thank you. When I do, it usually makes people stop and smile. It just doesn’t happen all that much anymore. If I didn’t do that, my momma would find a way to smack me somehow from the great beyond.
Jesus always said to “put others first”. When you do, you are automatically showing kindness and courtesy. Selfishness can’t survive when you are out spreading J.O.Y. “Jesus, Others, and You”!
Sometimes a smile and a thank you make the other persons day worth while. Isn’t that really what life is all about? If we treat others the way we want to be treated, (all people, not just our friends and family), this world would be a much nicer place.
I know some days are harder than others. Those are the days for extra prayer and for biting our tongue. Now, let’s all, and I really mean me, practice courtesy.
Luv, Millie
Thought For the Day; You always catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. Honey smells better by far.

RECIPE FOR JUNE
Strawberry Banana Ice Cream
This is a healthy version of ice cream with 4 ingredients only. This would
also make a great dessert to serve up after dinner.
4 Ingredient Ice Cream
Ingredients:
• 2 bananas, cut into 1-inch slices (frozen)
• ½ cup frozen strawberries, sliced
• 2 tbsp Almond Milk
• ½ tsp vanilla
Instructions
1. Place banana slices on a plate, separating each slice. Place slices in
freezer for 2 hours (overnight is best!).
2. Remove strawberries and bananas from freezer and place in food
processor, blend until they are the consistency of soft serve ice cream.
3. Add almond milk (more or less for desired texture) and vanilla and blend
until smooth and well-mixed.
4. Transfer ice cream to a freezer container and freeze until solid. (don’t have
to wait if fruit is frozen, it is like soft serve ice cream)
5. Scoop with ice cream scoop and serve.
You can really use any frozen fruit to make this.
