The apparent objective of such a
provision was to check increasing stress
and suicidal tendencies among the
students. But in reality this very
provision is incapacitating students and
the education system alike.

The real tragedy is that-
In 2011:less than 50,000 found admissions in excellent
science, engineering and medical institutes and
colleges in India.
And a study estimate that 80,000-1,00,000 leave to
study abroad for quality education.
Thus, at best, only 100,000 -- 150,000 of the 25 million
children born every year get quality higher education.

The students prefer to study abroad
because-
overseas schools provide a more flexible
learning environment and pay more
attention to students' soft skills such as
decision-making, initiative, leadership,
teamwork and sociability, which are often
missing in Indian institutions.

A fair examination and peer review system
at all levels
The government, policy makers and the
public at large must make it their highestpriority to provide better schools (and
health care)for all, especially for those who
are talented but cannot afford private
education.
