We all know we are what we eat. It’s a simple correlation that has obvious visual effects. But we know less about the effects that skin products can have on both ourselves and the environment. The skin is our largest organ and a huge percentage of what we put on our skin goes directly into the bloodstream.

For many years this was not a generally recognized fact and the use of dangerous chemicals in Cosmetics was considered a harmless situation. Today we are all concerned with ethical, environmental and health issues.

We have become more conscious of the Ingredient Lists of Cosmetics and the skin pollutants and chemicals that have been used for a long time. Until very recently, we have lived in an almost “blind ignorance” to the harmful effects of many of the ingredients we have been placing on our skin.

Today, we have a better understanding of what is needed and is nutritious for our skin, health and well being; of beauty on the inside as well as the outside.

We can now demand and expect to receive products that are good, not just for our skin, but in an ethical, environmental, natural, organic sense. We want products that work with nature, not against it, to create a harmony of body, soul, mind and environment.

NatureThe Miracle of

Science tells us that Nature is an intricate combination of chemical elements that make up the earth, water, air and all living things. The sixteen most common elements are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, calcium, potassium, sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon, iron, manganese, chlorine, sulfur, fluorine and iodine. These sixteen basic elements, plus many more trace minerals in many combinations, are found in the soil, water, air, food, animals, birds, fish and our bodies.

These chemical elements are infinitesimally small in their atomic forms and infinitely complicated within themselves. If it were not for these chemical elements, neither you nor I would be here…they are that important and they are totally safe, in proper combination.

Foods from nature contain these sixteen different elements in different combinations. That is why they are different colors, different degrees of hardness and softness, different tastes and contribute different essentials to our lives.

Nature is “all wise” and has created myriads of different foods for man and animals. These foods all have a limited life span before they begin to spoil and to die. Nature has created all types of good and bad bacteria and micro-organisms. These tiny organisms, which we cannot see, can grow quickly and cause food to spoil.

Nature has placed a preservative of one type or another in many foods, such as: Swiss Cheese contains sodium propionate from lactic acid. Oranges, lemons and grapefruit contain citric acid. Cucumbers and Rhubarb contain Oxalic acid, so do rice, potatoes and molasses. All natural vegetable oils will become rancid (spoiled) simply by exposure to the air through oxidation. Nature has provided tocopherois (Vitamin E) to help prevent this rancidity in oils. In our cosmetic products we use many food extracts, such as almonds, apricots, sesame oil, soy bean oil, honey, avocado oil, etc. It is natural to expect these food extracts to spoil but our customers expect our products to remain pure and fresh for a long time and they do remain fresh for a long time.

For your protection, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has required all cosmetic manufacturers to assure that their products will remain fresh and free of harmful contamination during use and under most circumstances. To accomplish these requirements, preservative and antioxidant systems are used. We depend upon natural substances and the smallest amount of specially selected and tested preservatives as needed. As I mentioned earlier, the idea of preservatives didn’t originate with Jeunique International, Inc. It originated with Nature. What we do, in many cases, is use the same or similar devices Nature uses to protect its food.

Due to the many different languages worldwide, it has been mutually decided to use the scientific International Cosmetic Ingredient (INCI) terms for proper declaration of Cosmetic Ingredients. These INCI names are most often Latin-based and that inevitably sounds “chemical”. Each cosmetic product is formulated to perform a specific function and its purpose is therefore different. However, we will cover the “Purpose of Ingredients” in a general manner to encompass all the functions.

These are examples of three important Cosmetic Products and the purpose of the Ingredients.

The Purpose of

This daily regimen not only cleanses, but also stimulates and helps to moisturize the skin. A

cleansing formula, therefore, may contain – Water (demineralized), Moisturizing Oils, Surfactants,

Herbal Extracts, Humectants, Emulsifiers to permit the mixing of Oil and Water, Fragrances and

materials to prevent bacterial growth and spoilage, plus a thickening substance

like Beeswax.

Daily use following the cleansing procedure to remove any residue of cleanser and to complete the cleansing and stimulating process; plus encouraging water retention and moisturizing of the skin. May contain Water (D.I.), Humectants, Emulsifiers, Herbal Extracts, Vitamins, Light Vegetable Oils, Fragrance, Preservatives and Color.

Used both day and night after cleanser and freshener as an emollient, softening, protein-like

cream. May contain Emollient Oils, Water, Emulsifiers, Humectants, Isopropyl Myristate to permit a “slip” feel and prevent a sticky feeling.

IngredientsWATER Is one of the most vital ingredients of our

cosmetics because “Beauty has a thirst for Moisture” and moisture can only be provided by water. We use only pure, demineralized water that is carefully controlled.

HUMECTANTS Help maintain moisture in the skin and they can actually absorb water from the air. Glycerine and Sorbitol are examples of humectants and they can all be obtained from natural sugar sources. Humectants also help keep our products spreadable, smooth and moist.

EMOLLIENTS Many are oils that originate from vegetable sources such as Avocados, Apricot Kernels, Coconuts, Wheat Germ, Sesame Seeds, Peanuts, Safflower Seeds, Soya Beans, Castor Beans, Rapeseeds, Palm, Rice, Olives, Almonds, Jojoba, Anise, Corn, Balm Mint, Caraway Seeds, Cottonseed, Lemons, Oranges, Linseeds and Sunflower Seeds. We use many of these natural oils in our products.

EMULSIFIERS Are substances that permit Water and Oil to mix or, in other words, form an emulsion. Protein is an emulsifier for milk and flour acts as an emulsifier in making gravy. Lecithin is a widely used natural emulsifier because it contains Glycerides, Polysorbates, Sorbitan Stearate, Cellulose Gum and Pectin are other examples of emulsifiers.

SURFACTANTS Are mild, gentle cleansing agents that help

make water “wetter” so that the cleansing action will be more efficient and thorough. Surface active agents (Surfactants) are basically derived from coconut or palm oil.

ALCOHOLS Are generally divided into two types. The “fatty” alcohols, such as Stearyl Alcohol and Cetyl Alcohol, are waxy/oily substances used in lotions and creams to give a nice “feel” on the skin and body to the product. They are derived from oils such as coconut and palm and the “alcohol” part of their name is based on their chemical chain.

COLORANTS Come in many forms from Nature and the

Earth. Annato is a natural yellow to red color from the seeds of the Bixa Orellano Shrub and is used to color Butter, Cheese, Margarine and Ice Cream. Titanium Dioxide is a pure white pigment used in Makeup Bases and Powders. Ultramarine Blue – Green – Pink – Red and Violet can be obtained from Lapis-Lazuli. Iron Oxide, which has been used for thousands of years in makeup, exists in many shades of red, yellow, brown and black. Consequently, in its purest form, it is the most important mineral colorant. There are other certified, organic colorants approved by the FDA that are listed as F D & C colors.

FRAGRANCES Are usually a blend of substances, such as herbs and essential oils from petals, stems and leaves of flowers and spices in some fragrances. Because they are considered “Trade Secrets”, only the word “Fragrance” or “Parfum” is required.

PROTEINS Proteins for use in cosmetics come in three forms – Animal (Hydrolyzed Animal) Protein, Vegetable (Soya) Protein and Milk (Hydrolyzed) Protein. We only use the Vegetable (Soya) Protein in our skin care products.

Vitamins used in cosmetics must be labeled as follows regardless of their source: Vitamin A – Retinol; Vitamin B1 – Thiamine; Vitamin B2 – Riboflavin; Vitamin B6 – Pyridoxine Panthenol; Vitamin C – Asorbic Acid; Vitamin D – Ergocalciferol; Vitamin E – Tocopherol; Vitamin H – Biotin; Vitamin K – Menadione. All Vitamins used in our cosmetics are from the same pure, organic and natural sources as those Vitamins used in our Food Supplement Products.

WAXES Are used in creams, lotions, rouges, lipsticks, etc., to give body, feel and shine; also as an emulsifier. Some natural waxes are: Carnauba from the South American Palm, Beeswax from the Honeycomb; Ozokerite or Earth Wax from a natural mineral source; and Candelilla from native plants in Texas and Mexico.

ACIDS Used in cosmetic products by Jeunique are obtained from coconut palm oils which consist of glycerides containing Lauric Acid, Myristic Acid, Stearic Acid, Oleic Acid, Capric Acid, Palmitic Acid, Caprylic and Caproic Acids. These acids are used as solubilizers and as a part of emulsifiers and one is a source of Isopropyl Myristate. Many people relate the term “acid” to a harsh, corrosive chemical. These acids are definitely not in this group and are only called “acids” because of their chemical chain.

HERBAL, Are all from natural sources and they add color, fragrance, stimulating, astringent and refreshing qualities to our products. Extracts such as these have been used throughout the ages in all types of beauty aids and add much to the romance and mystery of Beauty.

The formulation of Cosmetics is somewhat like baking a cake. The ingredients must be carefully selected and blended in measured proportions, in the proper sequence and under the correct conditions. For example: The Recipe says – Beat the eggs, soften the butter and gradually add the sugar. Change your procedure to melted butter, add in all the sugar and then blend in the eggs. You will be surprised at the different result – but – it is still cake!

The development of a quality cosmetic requires training, skill, patience, accuracy and creativity. This background makes the difference between an average cosmetic and a superb product.

All of our Cosmetic Products are formulated according to rigid controls and standards. The ingredients are tested before being measured. Then they are blended carefully and each batch is tested again. We also have finished products sent out to an independent laboratory for further testing.

We formulate our cosmetics with ingredients that are generally recognized as non-irritating to sensitive skin.

The words “Hypo-Allergenic” convey a similar inference and meaning. Over a period of many years, practically all cosmetic ingredients have been tested for reactions and sensitivity. The selection and blending of these less “sensitive” ingredients are of utmost importance in formulating a Hypo-Allergenic Cosmetic product. Then the resulting product has to be thoroughly tested for irritancy.

It has become practice to use the pH scale to determine the degree of acidity or alkalinity of a product. Technically the pH factor, on a scale of 0-14, relates to the potential of hydrogen in a product. 0-7 is acid. 7 is neutral and 7-14 is alkaline. Your skin and hair are slightly acidic, with a pH factor between 5 and 6. This is called an “Acid Mantle” and is a protective shield for the skin and hair. It is vitally important that nothing should be applied to the skin or hair that is excessively alkaline or acidic in nature.

Our Cosmetic Products are pH Balanced in the formulations and in their action on your skin. Our Products are created to “work together” to maintain the protective “Acid Mantle” that nature has provided for you.
