Indian Standard

SPECIFICATION FOR DRAWBAR EYES AND FORECARRIAGE PINS

FOR CONNECTION BETWEEN TRAILERS OF GROSS MASS ABOVE 5 TONNES AND UP TO

35 TONNES AND TRANSPORT TRACTOR

0. FOREWORD

0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 29 November 1976, after the draft finalized by the Transport Tractors and Trailers Sectional Committee had been approved by the Marine, Cargo Movement and Packaging Division Council.

0.2 The requirements of this standard, which relate only to vehicles used on the public highways, are intended to ensure the maximum degree of compatibility between commercial and government department standards.

0.3 The material specifications are for the minimum qualities acceptable, and do not exclude the use of other materials provided that these are at least equal in quality so that road safety is not impaired.

0.4 This standard should be used in conjunction with IS : 8296-1976*, IS : 8297-1976t, IS : 8299-1976$ and IS : 8300-19765.

0.5 In the preparation of this standard, considerable assistance has been derived from BS AU 29 : 1964 ‘ Specification for drawbar eyes & forecarriage pins for use between trailers of 5-35 tonnes gross weight & towing vehicle ‘, issued by the British Standards Institution.

0.6 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with

*Specification for towing jaw for use between trailers of up to 35 tonnes gross weight and transport tractor.

tspecification for towing jaw for use between trailers of up to 16 tonnes gross weight and transport tractor.

SSpecification for towing hook for use between trailers of up to 16 tonnes gross weight and transport tractor.

&Specification for towing hook for use between trailers of up to 35 tonnes gross weight and transport tractor.

Page 8: IS 8274 (1976): Drawbar Eyes and Forecarriage Pins for

IS : Z-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard specifies the basic dimensions and quality of materials for drawbar eyes and forecarriage pins for use in connection between towing tractors and:

a) trailers not exceeding 16 tonnes gross mass; and b) trailers not exceeding 35 tonnes gross mass.

This does not cover drawbar connections for trailers of up to 5 tonnes gross mass.

1.2 The gross mass refers to gross laden train masses where more than one trailer is drawn.

2. MATERIALS

2.1 The quality of the materials used in construction of the drawbar eyes and forecarriage pins shall begat least equal to Grade C20 of IS : 1875- 197 lt.

3. DIMENSIONS

3.1 Dimensions shall be as given in Table 1.

NOTE - The dimensions specified are calculated on the basis of the total yield strength of the parts of the drawbar being equal to two-thirds of the gross weight being towed. It is necessary that any other part connecting the trailer to the transport tractor not covered in this standard, shall be at least equal in strength.

4. DESIGN

4.1 Effective means shall be provided to prevent endwise movement of the forecarriage pin.

4.2 Ifthe drawbar eye is arranged to swivel, stops shall be provided limit- ing the angular movement to 15” on either side in the horizontal plane ( see Table 1 ).

5. MARKING

5.1 The following wording shall be suitably marked on the drawbar: ‘ TO TOW 16 TONNES GROSS ’

OR ’ TO TOW 35 TONNES GROSS ’

as the case may be.

*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised). tSpecification for carbon steel billets, blooms, slabs and bars for forgings (third revision).

*The trailer gross mass indicated in the first column is the maximum towed mass, whether consisting of one or more trailers. Care should be taken to ensure that the combined gross mass of the trailers towed by any particular drawbar eye or forecarriage pin does not exceed the gross mass for which the drawbar eye or forecarriage pin is designed.

5.2 In addition, the drawbar shall be marked with, at an appropriate place, the following information:

a) Name or trade-mark of the manufacturer,

b) Date or year of manufacture, and c) The country of manufacture.

5.2.1 The drawbar may also be marked with the ISI Certification Mark.

NOTE - The use of the IS1 Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of the Indian Standards Institution (Certification Marks) Act and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The IS1 Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by ISI and operated by the producer. IS1 marked products are also continuously checked by IS1 for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.
