Indian StandardSPECIFICATION FOR

PVC INSULATION AND SHEATH OFELECTRIC CABLES

( First Revision)

0 . F O R E W O R D

0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the IndianStandards Institution on 30 April 1984, after the draft finalized by thePower Cables Sectional Committee had been approved by the Electro-technical Division Council.

0.2 This standard was originally published in 1970 with d view to bringunder a single cover the various requirements for PVC insulation andsheath of different types of cables.

0.3. This revision has been undertaken to update it in the li~llt of furtherexperience and developments and to align with international practice, where appropriate. Details about methods of test have been, by and large, taken out from this standard and are now covered in a separate standard,to which reference has been made at appropriate places.

U.4 This standard is complementary to the individual specification fordifferent types of cables.

0.5 In preparing this standard, considerable assistance has been derivedfrom IEC Publication 502 ( 1983 ) ‘ Extruded solid dielectric insulatedpower cables for rated voltages from 1 kV up to 30 kV ‘, issued by theInternational Electrotechnical Commission ( IBC ) .

0.6 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expres-sing the result of a test shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*.The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value shouldbe the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

*Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ).

IS : 5831. 1984

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard specifies the physical and electrical requirements forPVC insulation and sheath of electric cables.

1.2 The types of PVC compounds covered by this standard are givenbelow:

Type A General purpose insulation for maximum rated conductortemperature 70°C intended for cables with rated voltagesU,/U up to and including 3.313.3 kV.

Type B General purpose insulation for maximum rated conductortemperature 7OW intended for cables with rated voltagesU,/U above 3-313.3 kV.

Type C Heat resisting insulation for maximum rated conductortemperature 85°C intended for cables with rated voltagesup to and including 1 100 volts.

Type ST1 General purpose sheath intended for use in cables oper-ating at a maximum rated conductor temperature 70°C.

Type ST2 Heat resisting sheath intended for use in cables oper-ating at a maximum rated conductor temperature 90°C.

2. TERMINOLOGY2.0 For the purpose of this standard, the definitions given in IS : 1885( Part 32 )-1971* shall apply, in addition to the following.

2.1 Variation - Difference between the median value obtained afterageing and the median vaIue obtained without ageing, expressed as apercentage of the latter.

3. COMPOSITION5.1 The insulation or sheath shail consist of a compound based on one ofthe following materials, which have been suitably compounded and pro-cessed to meet the requirements of this standard:

a) Polyvinyl chloride ( PVC ),b) Suitable co-polymers of which the major constituent shall be vinyl

chloride,c) Mixture of (a) and (b).

4. TEST REQUIREMENTS

4.1 The insulation and sheath shall satisfy the test requirements stated inTables 1 and 2 respectively, to the extent specified in the relevant cablestandard.

TEST FOR COLOUR FASTNESS TO WATER

A-l. A piece about 100 mm long of insulation or sheath is out into smallpieces and immersed for the specified period in about 10 times its ownvolume of distilled water maintained at the specified temperature. At theend of the period, the water shall be examined. It shall be free from anytrace of colour.

B-l. Testing Equipment

El.1 Class tubes closed at one end 110 mm long with an outer diameterof approximately 5 mm and an inner diameter of 4.0 f 0.5 mm.

B-l.2 Universal indicating paper with a PH range of 1 to 10.

B-1.3 Thermostatically controlled heating apparatus for the specifiedtemperature.

B-l.4 Thermometer calibrated in divisions of O*l”C.

B-1.5 Stop-watch or a suitable time meter.

B-2. Testing M e t h o da) From the insulation of each core to be tested or from the sheath

to be tested, three samples, each of 50 f 5 mg, shall be taken inthe form of strip, if possible. For small thickness the samplemay consist of two or more strips. Each sample shall be insertedinto a glass tube as specified in B-1.1. The sample shall occupythe bottom of the tube and not project more than 30 mm abovethe bottom.

b) A strip of dry universal indicating paper as specified in B-1.2,about 15 mm long and 3 mm wide, shall be inserted into theopen end ( top ) of the glass tube so that the strip protrudesabout 5 mm out of the tube and can be bent to keep it i nposition.

11

c) The glass tube shall be placed into the heating apparatus, asspecified in B-1.3, which has already attained the test tempera-ture specified. The glass tube shall be inserted. into the heatingapparatus for a depth of 60 mm.

4 The time taken for the universal indicating paper to changecolour from a pH value of 5 to a pH value of 3 shall be measured,or the test continued for the specified duration without thecolour change occurring. The colour change point shall be consi-dered to have been reached when the red colouring of theuniversal indicating paper characteristic of a @H value of 3 is justbecoming visible. The universal indicating paper shall berenewed ( especially for long duration stabilities ) ‘towards theend of the expected test time every 5 to 10 min, so that thechange point is better visible.

B-3. Evaluation

B-3.1 The average value of the thermal stability times of the three samples shall not be lower than the value specified in Table 1 or Table 2 asapplicable.
