GEAR

o. FORE W 0 R D

,0.1 This Indian Standard was adopted by theIndian Standards Institution on 6 November1969, after the draft finalized by the TextileMaterials for Fishing Purposes Sectional Committee had been appro ved by th e TextileDivis ion Council.

0.2 The idea behind compiling a gu ide for fishing gear designs was that the construction of aspecific fishing design would be of particularvalue in a country like India where the development of fisheries is still in its infancy. I t wouldprovide ass istance in selecting the suitable gea r,the criteria in respect of dimensions and facilitate in placing com plete a nd correct orders forthe construct ion of gea r. Besid es, it would also beof t~emendous value to fisheri es training centres. It IS also expected that the guide would bemost useful in serv ing as a link between thefishermen and the gear techn ologists.0.3 Hitherto, there was no common denominator by which fishing gear could be specified and, consequ.ently, no adequate means of comparingthe varrous types of gear. To achieve this purpose of intellig~nt communication in respect ofgear construction between gear technologistsand net makers, the gear drawings in the guide~ad to : ~) be clearly understandable, b) providemfi)r~atlon on the main dimensions by directreading of . numbers from the drawings, andc) allow direct comparison of shape betweendifferent gears of the same typ e.

This has been achieve-d by using a minimumof words in the drawings; by making th e draw-

I. SCOPE

1.1 This guide specifies the principal cons~ructional .detai~s of various types of netslike traw~J gill, sem~s. etc, for fishing gear. TheconstructIOnal details for fabricating a particular. type of net have been given in the form ofdr~w1l1g and d.ata sheet. Each such drawingand data sheet 15 complete enough for the fabrication of a particular type of net and as suchforms a distinct part of the guide. The methodof representation followed on the data sheets~nd on the drawings has been detailed outIn 1. and 3 of this gu ide. When a set ofd ra wll1gs and data sheets consisting of severalparts falls into a natural group, it is followed byan explanatory note given in the form of anappendix giving the terrninolog and otherrelated de tails applicable to th a t gryoup.

2

ings of all trawl nets on a I: 2 presentation ofthe mesh hanging and by providing a prominent ;scale indicator on all drawings.

0.4 It has to be noted that not all the drawingsare complete to the last detail, but sufficientdetail has been given in all cases for anyone initiated into the general principles and practices ofnet making, to construct anyone of them. Theintention is to p rovide more than a constructionmanual. The guide has been got up in a formwhereby one net or gear may readily be compared with a nother as to its size, shape andstrength.

0.5 Both drawings and data sheets are used topresent the information, the former to give animpression of the size and shape of the gear aswell as certain constructional details, the latterto convey certain information that cannot easilyor tidily be shown in the drawings. Some ofthe information on the drawings and datasheets is duplicated, but it is believed that thiswill save the reader and user of the guide thetime and effort in quickly comparing nets withone another as well as in rapidly grasping theirconstructions.

0.5.1 The detailed drawings are neither toscale nor exact. They are meant to give essential impressions to any gear expert who wishesto ' choose one gear rather than another and whomay wish to construct one.

2. METHOD OF REPRESENTATION ONDATA SHEETS

2.0 General - Each data sheet consists of Ssections - the ' first section classifies the gear;the second speci fies the webbings; the thirdspecifies the ropes; the fourth specifies the floats, sinkers and any additional auxiliaries indicatedby reference numbers on the drawings; while thelast section deals with any vital additionalinformation.

1.1 Nettiog Paoels

2.1.1 The various panels in the drawings arespecified in capital letters using subscriptnumericals where necessary. The panel lettersare cross-referenced with the data sheets. Mesh

sizes have been indicated by the symbOl 0 inthe appropriate panel.

4. DESIGNS FOR TRAWLS

2.1.3 Length - In all cases, this is specifiedin metres.

3. METHOD OF REPRESENTATION ONDRAWINGS

4.1 According to consn uction, trawls could beclassified as two -seam, four-seam, six-seam, etc, according to th e number of sea ms with which itis constructed. Constructional details offour mostpopular designs of two-s eam trawls have beencovered in this gu ide. The designs relating totrawls of four-seam and six-seam types would beadded to this guide at a future date. Theterminology and classification details related tothe fabrication of trawls have been given inAppendix A.

Number of Meshes /Mesh Size

Number of Meshes

MeshesDeep

3.1 For facilitating comparison of designs, thedrawing normally contains the following detailswhich also appe<lr in the data sheet:

a) The number of meshes at the top andbottom of each panel,

b) The depth of each panel in meshes,c) The mesh size in the panels ill milli

metres, andd) The rates of bait ing and cutting of each

panel.

3.1 Depending on the layout of the net, the number ofmesbes in depth and the mesh size appeareithe r inside or alongside the panels thus:

1.1.1 Material -Manila, sisal, cotton, nylonare all taken as names being in common useand have been used as such. Reference to tradenames bas been avoided.

1.1.3 Twine Size - This is specified accordingto relevant Indian Standard.

2.1.4 Stretched Mesh - Mesh sizes have beenspecified in millimetrea, True mesh size hasbeen used, that is, the length of one lumen plusknot with the meshes stretched.

2.1.5 Upper Edge - The number of meshesalong the top of each panel has been given.

2.1.6 Lower Edge - The number of meshesalong the bottom of each panel has been given.

1.1.7 Depth - The number of meshes down inone vertical line of each panel has been given.

2.1.8 Baiting Rate - Decreasing or reducingthe number of meshes ill successive rows so asto make a tapering piece of webbing. Whereverthe webbing is tapered differently on it s twoedges, then the baiting rate for both the innerand outer edges is specified separately.

1.1.9 Hanging - Ratio of attachment ofwebbing to a supporting rope or line.

1.1 Lines, Ropes

2.2.0 The various ropes and lines are designated in lower case letters. These letters arecross-referenced with drawings.

2.2.1 Milleria] - Manil~, sisal, cotton, nylonare all taken as names being in common use andhave been wed as such. Reference to tradenames has been avoided.

2.1.1 Diameter - In all cases, this is specifiedin millimetres.

A·2.. SIZE OF TIL\WL

A-2..1 In beam trawl, the size of the trawl isindicated by the length of the beam used. Inotter trawls, the size of the trawl is the lengthorh~d rope.

A-3. PARTS OF THE TRAWL

A-3.1 Each part of the trawl is named accordingto its maiD function. It is convenient to groupthe parts under three main heads, namely, webbings, ropes and lines, and accessories.

A-3.1.1 Webbingl- The material, mesh sizeand the dimensions in length and breadth innumber of meshes are to be specified, Thebaiting, the creasing or the cutting rate, if any,are also to be indicated.

A-3.U Ropel and lines - The material, lay, construction, thickness and the quantity requiredare to be specified.

A-3.1.3 Accessories - The material, size, thequantity required and the mode of use are tobe specified.

A.... DEFINITIONS OF TERMS RELATEDTO WEBBINGS

A....l Wiags - The forward extension of webbings on either sides for guiding the fish towardsthe bag of the trawl. They are in pairs, one oneither side. The upper wings are attached oneither sides of the upper belly and the lowerwings, on either sides of the lower beliy, Theupper edges of the wings are attached to thehead rope and the lower edges to the foot rope.

A-4.1 Jibs - The triangular pieces of webbingattached on either sides of the upper and lowerbellies at their junction with wings to present asmooth catenary at the mouth of the net. Theseare made in pairs, one for each side. The fourseam type of trawls are invariably provided withjibs.

A-4.J Doge.r - They are similar to jibs, havingall.s along the hanging edge and points onth~ngs . In two-seam trawls, sometimes thedogears are attached on either ends of thequarter to form a smooth catenary. They arealso made in pairs.

A-4.4 BDsum - The middle portion of the trawlnet between the wings.

A-4.S Side Pieces - These are also termed'side wedges'. They are identical pieces ofwebbing attached on either sides of the belly tojoin the upper and lower portions of a fourseam trawl. The portion or the webbing thatcomes above the belly is termed' top wedge'and the portion placed adjacent to belly isknown as ' lower wedge' or 'side wedge'.

A-4.6 Qurter - The two junctions where thetop wing joins the square.A-4.7 Sqaare - The front portion of the upperportion of a trawl which overhangs the lower

part of the net. The webbing for the squareextends from the' baiting' to the head rope.

A-4.8 Top Belly - The portion of the webbingbetween the square throat or cod-end on theupper side of a trawl. It is also called 'topbody' or ; baiting'.

A-4.9 Lower Belly - The section ofthe webbingthat forms the lower body of the trawl from thefoot rope to the fore-part of the throat or codend. It is also called as • lower body ",

A-4.10 False BeUy - Old pieces of thick webbing or raw hides attached below the belly of atrawl as a chafing gear. It is also known as'rubber '.

A-4.l1 Throat - The portion of webbing placedin between or intermediate to the belly and codend. It is also known as the' extension piece • or, lengthener'.

A-4.U Cod-End - The narrow end section ofthe trawl net, usually ofheavy construction withsmall meshes where the fish is collected duringthe operation of the net.

A-4.13 Flapper - The webbing attached to thefore-part of the cod-end as a safety device toprevent the escape of fish from the cod-end., Funnel', 'pocket', 'valve', 'floppa', 'sack'and 'trap' are the other names used for theflapper.

A-4.14 Apron - Old piece of thick nettingattached below the cod-end as a chafing gear.I t is also called • dress' .

A-4.IS Selndge - The net is sometimes fastened to the ropes by meshes made of thicker twinethan the rest of the webbing, known as selvedge. The selvedge usually extends for 3 to 6 meshes.

A-4.16 Baiting - A baiting or reducing thenumber of meshes in successive rows so as tomake a tapering piece of webbing during handbraiding. This is brought about by picking uptwo-half meshes of the previo..s row and bringing them under a single knot in the successiverow. It is also called 'sk.·· iug '.

A-4.17 CreasiDg - Increasing the number ofmeshes in successive rows so as to alter theshape of the webbing. In this method, additionalloops are made at the required row.

A-4.t8 Cutting Rate - The method of intermingling different types of cuts, at distinct ratesin a rythmical way during the tailoring to shapeof machine-made webbing.

A-S. DEFINITIONS OF TERMS RELATEDTO ROPES AND LINES

A-5.t Head Rope - The rope or line to whichthe upper edge of the net is finally attached.• Head line', 'float line' and 'cork line' are thecommon names used for this rope. Floats areattached to this rope for keeping the netbuoyant.

4

Page 10: IS 5508-1 to 5 (1969): Guide for Fishing Gear - General · 0.2 The idea behind compiling a gu ide for fish ing gear designs was that the construction of a specific fishing design

A-S.l Foot Rope - The rope to which thelower edge of the net is attached finally.'Ground rope', 'ground line I, 'foot line' and'lead line I are the other common names usedfor this rope; Weights are attached to this ropefor stretching the net-downwards.

A-S.3 Bolda Line - A line or thin rope ofstrongconstruction to which the webbing is initiallyhung, prior to the rigging of the net to the relevant head or foot ropes.

A-S." Lacing Twine - A thin strong twine usedfor seaming or joining the longitudinal edges oradjacent panels of webbings.

A-5.S Cod-End Rope - A strong rope lacedthrough the end meshes of the cod-end used forsecuring as well as releasing the catches from thecod-end.

A-S.6 Bridle - Name given to the four shortchains or iron bars that hold the otter board atthe proper angle, or the short pair of lines( legs) attaching the board to the wing of thetrawl, or the short lines that hold the spreaderin position.

A-5.7 Sweep Line - The ropes or cables thatconnect the wing of the trawl and the otterboard, used to make the otter boards sweep awider area.

A-5.S Quarter Rope -- Ropes used for haulingthe trawl OQ to the vessel. They are used inpairs. Starting from the lower quarter junctionsof the trawl, they are taken on the outside ofthe netting and pass through the 'beckets'( eyes) provided for the purpose on the headrope and are attached to the otter boards ordan-le-nos.

A-6. DEFINITIONS OF TERMS RELATEDTO ACCESSORIES

A-6.1 Bea. - A metal or wooden beam towhich the beam trawl net is attached duringoperation.

IS : 5508 ( Part I ) - 1969

A.-6.2 Dan-le-no - Strong short sticks or ironpieces attached to the ~nds. of either wings ofthe trawl to keep the WIng trps stretched vertically. 'Dheenlcno',' brail I and' spreader' arethe other terms used for this.

A-6.3 Tickler Chain - Iron chain attachedahead of the foot rope of a trawl net to disturbthe bottom fish and to induce them to enter thenet.

A-6.4 Otter Boards - Boards made of planksand steel plates used for keeping open themo~th of the trawl ne r horizontally. They areof different shapes; but the fiat rectangular andthe oval are the common forms. They are construc.ted in pairs as one 'right' and the other'left I.

A-6.S Towing Rope - Strong manila or coirrope used during hand operation or strong -wirerope used during winch operation of the trawlnet to drag the net.

A-6.6 Floats - Buoyant materials, like wood~or:k, ~lass, aluminium ~lIoy, steel, plastic, etc;10 varrous shapes and sizes used for keeping thehead rope of a net upwards.

A-6.7 Weights - Sinking materials, like leadiron and cement in various shapes and sizes fo;keeping the foot rope of net downwards.

A-6.8 Bobbins - These are of spherical shapewith a cylindrical channel large enough to allowan eye spl iced wire rope through the centre. They vary in size and weight, and are made ofwood, rubber ' or iron. Bobbins are used toprevent the gear from catching on the sea bed byrolling along the bottom.

A-6.9 Butterfly - I t is an angle bar of fiat ironone side of the angle being shorter than theother. The shorter side is connected to thefoot rope and the longer side is connected to thehead rope. Its purpose is to spread the wingsvertically.
