4.4 The handles shall be properly turned to the, shape as shown in Fig. 2.

4.5 It is recommended that, immediately after manufacture, the handlesand the heads ( before fitting of the bands) be dipped in raw linseed oilat room temperature as this treatment retards changes in moisture content.

5. DIMENSIONS AND" TOLERANCES

5.1 Dimensions - The mallets shall conform to the dimensions as givenin Fig. 1 and 2.

o. FOR E W 0 R D0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision) was adopted by the IndianStandards Institution on 23 October 1975, after the draft finalized by theTimber Stores Sectional Committee had been approved by the CivilEngineering Division Council.

0.2 A series of Indian Standards are being formulated to cover variouswooden stores largely used by Defence, Railways and other agencies. Thegeneral requirements for wooden tool handles have been already covered inIS: 620-1975*. This standard is intended to cover the requirements forwooden tent mallets including the heads and handles, which are used inpitching tents.

0.3 This standard was first published in 1964. In this revision, besidesincorporating a few rnodifications in the list of species suitable for woodentent mallets, modifications have been incorporated on tolerances on thedimensions of handle and the head of the mallet.

0.4 In the formulation of this standard, due weightage has been given tothe international co-ordination among the standards and practices prevail- .ing in different countries in addition to relating it to the practices in thefield in this country.

0.5 For the purpose of. deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordance withIS: 2-1960t. The number of significant places retained in the rounded offvalue should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard covers the requirements for wooden tent mallets in threesizes, namely, large, medium and small.

2. TERMINOLOGY

2.1 For the purpose of this standard, the definitions given in IS : 620-1975·shall apply.

3. MATERIALS

3.1 Head3.1.1 Timber

3.1.1.1 The mallet heads shall be manufactured from any of the speciesof timbers given in Appendix A.

3.1.1.2 The moisture content of the timber shall not exceed 18 percent.The timber shall have a slope cf grain not exceeding I in 15 and shall befree from centre heart ( pith), any kind of decay (rot), live insect attack,shakes, splits ( except hair splits) and knots ( except live pin knots).

3.1.1.3 Sound sapwood shall be permitted provided that it does notextend beyond the outer edge of the metal bands.

3.1.2 Band - Bands of large and medium heads shall be manufacturedfrom mild steel hoop of size 25 mm X 1·6 rom and that of small heads frommild steel hoop ofsize 20 mm X 1·6 rnm. The bands shall be painted withred oxide paint before fixing.

3.13 Screws - Wood screw No. 8 and of 25 mm length conformingto IS : 676G-1972t shall be used for fixing the bands of the heads.

3.2 Handle - Handles shall be manu factured from any of the timberspecies given in the relevant Appendices to IS: 620-1975*. Therequirements for tile manufactured tool handles shall be as given inIS : 620-1975*.

4. MANUfACTURE

4.1 The mallet heads and handles shall be manufactured to the shape asshown in Fig. 1 and 2 respectively.

..2 The eye in the head slall be central, accurate, smooth and of uniformtaper. The edges of the ' e-hole shall be slightly chamfered. The endsof the head shall be flat . th the edges chamfered.

4.3 The bands shall be e ther lapped and brazed or' butt welded at thejoint and shall be free fro n sharp edges. The holes in the bands shall bedrilled clean and couns- unk just sufficiently to permit the heads of thescrews fitting flush. TL.'. oands shall be closely and firmly held to-the headswith screws.

6. WORKMANSIUP AND FINISH

5.1 Dimenaions - The mallets shall conform to the dimensions as givenin Fig. 1 and 2.5.2 ToleraDces

5.2.1 Handle ( Diameter )

6.1 The mallet heads and handles shall be properly shaped and finishedsmooth. The brazing or welding of the joints of the bands shall be clean.

6.2 The handles and the heads shall be interchangeable with the corres­ponding components of the respective mallets in the same supply.

7. TEST

7.1 Each mallet shall be struck ten times as in normal use against a blockof wood. At the end of this test, neither the head nor the handle shallshow any sign of failure.

7.2 The heads or handles, when supplied separately, shall be fitted withthe corresponding counterpart and tested as indicated in 7.1.

8. PRESERVATION

8.1 Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, the heads and the randlesshall be thoroughly soaked in hot ( about 900 e ) raw linseed oil for onehour and allowed to dry. They shall then be Wiped clean with a dry pieceof cloth.

9. PACKING

9.1 The mallet heads and handles shall be securely tied and packed ingunny cloth in convenient lots for easy handling in transit or as specifiedby the purchaser- .

II. SAMPLING

10.1 The method of drawing representative samples of mallets and thecriteria for conformity shall be as prescribed in Appendix B.

11. MARKING

11.1 Each head and handle shall be legibly and indelibly marked with themanufacturer's name or initials or recognized trade-mark and the year ofmanufacture.

11.1.1 The head and handle may also be marked with the lSI Certifi­cation Mark.

NOTE - The use of the lSI Certification Mark is governed by the provisions of th eIndian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks) Act and the Rules and Regulationsmade thereunder. The lSI mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveysthe assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of thatstandard under a well-defined system of inspection, testing and quality control whi chis devised and supervised by lSI and operated by the producer. lSI marked produ ctsare also continuously checked by lSI for conformity to that standard a. a furth ersafeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the lSI Certific a­tion Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from theIndian Standards Institution.

8-1. SAMPLING AND TESTINGB-l.1 Lot - In any consignment, all the wooden tent mallets of the samesize and manufactured under similar conditions of production shall begrouped together to constitute a lot.

B-l.2 Visual EnmjnatlOD - All the mallets in the Jot shall be inspectedfor visual defects, workmanship and finish. Any mallet failing to satisfy therequirements for these characteristics shall be rejected. The mallets, whichpass the visual examination, shall be subjected to further tests.

B-l.3 Selection orSamples for Farther Te.t. - The number of mallet sto be selected for further testing from those accepted as in B-l.2 shall be inaccordance with col 1 and 2 of Table 1.

NOTE - For the lot of 150 or leu mallets, the sample size· and the criteria (orconformity shall be as agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier.

8-1.3.1 The samples shall be selected at random. In order to ensure therandomness of selection, the procedures given in IS : 4905-1968· maybefollowed.

B-l.3.2 All the mallets selected as in B-I.3 shall be tested for dimensionsand tolerances, moisture content and the tests laid down under 7.

B-2. CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY

B-2.1 The lot shall be considered as conforming to the requirementsof the specification if the number of mallets failing to satisfy anyone ormore of the requirements does not exceed the corresponding permissiblenumber of defectives given in col 3 of Table 1.
