  • Indian Standmd SPECIFICATION FOR COAL TAR PITCH

    (Revised) 0. FOREWORD

0.1 This revised Itidian Standard was adbpted by the Indian. Standards Institution on 30 June 1961, after the draft finalized by the Bitumen and Tar Products Sectional Committee had been approved bv the Building Division Council and the Chemical Division Council.

0.2 The Indian Standard Specification for Coal Tar Pitch was first published in 1951. With the publication of IS : 1201 to 1220-1958 Methods for Testing Tar and Bitumen, it became necessary to revise this standard by deleting the methods of test given and make a reference to the published compilation.

0.3 Coal tar pitch serves as a valuable ingredient irk the production of a number of waterproofing, protective and binding compounds employed in masonry, steel and timber structures. It is also used for waterproofing concrete. structures, caulking of decks, as a saturant for roofing felts, as a binder for carbon electrodes and coal briquettes, for damn-proof courses, flooring mastics and as a base for coal tar paints. Coal tar pitch to ?his specification is not suitable for formulation of quick dying black enamels nor for road construction, for which purposes Indian Standard Specification fol. Road Tar (Revised) (IS : 215-1961) should be referred to.

0.4 Since the issue of original specification there 1~:~s been a fundamental change in the nature of coal tar produced in the latest design of coke ovens, which makes it impossible to comply with the volatile matter content based on the limits specified in the original standard. Hence the provisions regarding volatile matter content have been deleted and instead a new provision on maximum permissible distillate percentage below 270C and 300C has bee11 included.

0.5 The Sectional Committee responsible for the preparation of this standard has taken into

consideration the views of producers, consumers and techriologists arid has related the standard to the manufacturing and trade practices followed in the country in this field. Due weightage has also been given to the need for international co-ordination among standards ~ prevailing in different countries of &he world. These considera- tions led the Sectional Committee to derive assistance from the following standards :

B.S. 1310 :I950 COAL TAR PITCHESFOR BUILD- ING PURPOSES. British Standards Institution.

ASTM DESIGNATION : D 450-41 COAL TAR PITCH FOR ROOFING. Materials.

    American Society for Testing

0.6 This standard is one of a series of Indian Staridards on tar. Other standards in the series cover crude coal tar fog general use and road tar.

0.7 Wherever a reference to any Indian Standard appears in this specification, it shall be taken as a reference to the latest version of the standard.

0.8 Metric system has been adopted in India and all quantities and dimensions appearing in this standard have betn given in this system

0.9 I;or :he purpose of deciding whether a pa&- cula; requirement of this standard is complied with, the tinal value, observed or calcfilatetl, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-196(! Rules for Rounding Off Numerical Values (Revised). The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same ai that of the specified value in this standard.

0.10 This standard is intended chiefly to cover the technical provisions relating to coal tar pitch, and it does not include all the necessary provi- sions of a contract.

    1. SCOPE 3. GRADES

1.1 This standard covers the range of icur grades 3.1 Coal tar pitch shall be classified into. the of coal tar pitch from soft to hard consistencies followitig four grades : with softening points varying from 45 to 92C intended for the production of waterproofing

masonry, steel, timber and concrete structures c) Hard Medium Pitch, and and also for the preparation of roofing felts. d) Hard Pitch.
