Indian Standard
SPECIFICATION FOR BEEHIVE STAND
PART II FIXED TYPE
( First Revision )
0. FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard ( Part II ) ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 11 December 1978, after the draft finalized by the Apiary Industry Sectional Committee had been approved by the Agricultural and Food Products Division Council.
0.2 Beehives are kept on stands to protect bee-colonies from ants and to protect boxes from termites, etc. Beekeeping industry is now gradually switching over from stationary type to migratory type of beekeeping. Particularly while using bee-colonies for pollination of agricultural crops bee-colonies are migrated to farms for a short duration. Even in their permanent honey-flow sites bee-colonies are required to be migrated loca- lly for deriving maximum benefit of the flora. A portable stand, particu- larly a fixed one, therefore, forms an essential accessory of the beehive. The stand should be strong but light in mass, compact and handy for easy transportation.
0.2.1 The standard was first published in 1960. The present revision which is now issued in two parts covers folding and fixed type beehive stands. This standard ( Part II ) covers fixed type beehive stands.
0.3 In preparing this standard considerable assistance has been derived from information supplied by Central Bee Research Institute, Pune; Directorate of Beekeeping, Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Bombay and Department of Industries and Commerce, Government of Karnataka, Bangalore.
0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, express- ing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the
*tidies for rounding off numerical values f r&serf ).

IS : 1735 ( Part II ) - 1978
rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard ( Part II ) prescribes the requirements for fixed type mild steel stand for keeping beehives in the field.
2. SIZE
2.1 The size of the fixed type iron stand shall be as shown in Fig. 1.
3. MATERIAL
3.1 The fixed type stand shall be constructed from mild steel pipe of 40 mm diameter, 3 mm thickness and 530 mm length. For the water trough 0.63 mm thick galvanized steel should be used. The central pipe rod should be made from iron pipe of 40 mm diameter and 530 mm length.
4. CONSTRUCTIONAL DETAILS
4.1 Beehive Support Platform - A mild steel flat 3 mm thick and 240 mm long shall be welded widthwise on the centre of the upper tip of the central pipe rod. Two mild steel flats 3 mm thick and 380 mm long shall be welded widthwise in the centre to the tips of the cross-welded mild steel flat on the upper side. The four tips of these two steel flats shall be bent at right angle to a length of 30 mm. A circular hole shall be made in each of the four tips for tying the beehives placed over the stand.
4.2 Ground Support - The stand shall be supported on the ground by means of f’our legs. The legs shall be made of mild steel flats of 3 mm thickness and 560 mm length. Two such pieces should be used. This should be bent in semi-circular fashion and the tips straightened. The straight end portion shall be 30 mm in length with a circular hole in each of the four such tips to enable to nail the stand securely to the ground. The two pieces shall be welded to lower end of the pipe in the centre so that four legs spread at 90”; and project outside to a length of at least 210 mm from the centre with the central pipe rod standing vertical in the centre. The height from the ground to the base of the central pipe shall be only 90 mm and height from ground level to beehive support platform shall be 610 mm.
4.2.1 Nails - Four nails 120 mm in length and of 6 mm diameter with one end flattened and other pointed shall be used for nailing the stand to the,Qund securely.
i
4.3 Water Trough - A water trough 40 mm deep with a diameter of 230 mm should be prepared out of O-63 mm galvanized steel with a central circular hole 40 mm in diameter to enable the central pipe to pass through it. This water trough is passed through the central. pipe rod and brought to the point 305 mm from the lower tip of the central pipe rod and welded to the central pipe so that there shall be no leakage of water when water is poured inside for protection of the been-colony from the menace of ants, etc.
5. SHAPE AND DESIGN
5.1 The parts of the fixed stand shall be as far as possible of the shape and dimensions given in Fig. 1.
6. WORKMAlVUKP AND FINISH
al The bending of the flats should be indenticai on both ends. All the pieces should be cut at right angles to the length and should have smooth fInis&
6.2 The welding of the small parts should be exactly at equal distance from the centre of the tube opposite to each other as shown in Fig. 1. The welding of the parts should be satisfactory and without faults.
6.3 The stand should be suitably coated with a protective paint.
7. MARKING
7J Each fixed type beehive stand shall be marked with the following particulars: /
a) Manufacturer’s name and the trade-mark,
b) Year of manufacture, and
c) Batch and serial or code number.
7.1.1 Each fixed type beehive stand may also be marked with the IS1 Certification Mark.
NOTE - The use of the IS1 Certilication Mark is governed by the provisiona of the Indian Standards Institution ( Certification Marks ) Act and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The IS1 Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that the have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a we1 -defined s
r B quality control which is devised and supervised by I stem of inspection, testin and I and operated by the p ro8 ucer.
ISI marked products are also continuous1 checked by ISI for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details o ty conditions under which a licence for the use of the IS1 Certification Mark may be granted to manufacturers or processors, may be obtained from the Indian Standards Institution.
