NATIONAL FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Part 2) which is identical with ISO 9361-2:1991 ‘Indexable inserts for cutting tools— Ceramic inserts with rounded corners — Part 2: Dimensions of inserts with cylindrical fixing hole’issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was adopted by the Bureau of IndianStandards on the recommendations of the Single Point Cutting Tools, Carbide Tips and Indexable InsertsSectional Committee and approval of the Basic and Production Engineering Division Council.

The text of the ISO Standard has been approved as suitable for publication as an Indian Standard withoutdeviations. Certain conventions are, however, not identical to those used in Indian Standards. Attention isparticularly drawn to the following:

a) Wherever the words ‘International Standard’ appear referring to this standard, they should be readas ‘Indian Standard’.

b) Comma (,) has been used as a decimal marker in the International Standard, while in IndianStandards, the current practice is to use a point(.) as the decimal marker.

In the adopted standard, reference appears to the following International Standard for which IndianStandard also exists. The corresponding Indian Standard which is to be substituted in its place is listedbelow along with its degree of equivalence for the edition indicated:

(second revision)

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the finalvalue, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS 2:1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)’. The number of significantplaces retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

INDEXABLE INSERTS FOR CUTTING TOOLS —CERAMIC INSERTS WITH ROUNDED CORNERS

PART 2 DIMENSIONS OF INSERTS WITH CYLINDRICAL FIXING HOLE

1 Scope

This part of ISO 9361 specifies the dimensions ofindexable ceramic inserts with rounded corners,with cylindrical fixing hole, with 0° normal clearance.These inserts are primarily intended to be mountedby top and hole, or hole alone, clamping on turningand boring tools.

Ceramic cutting materials consist of a variety of ox-ides, nitrides and carbides. In contrast withhardmetals (including cermets) ceramics do nothave a metallic binding matrix, Such ceramic ma-terials are, for example, oxide ceramics (consistingprimarily of aluminium oxide A120J, carboxide cer-amics (consisting generally of a mixture of alu-minium oxide and other materials such as titaniumcarbide TiC) and nitride ceramics (consisting gen-erally of a mixture of silicon nitride and other ma-terials, such as yttrium oxide Y203 and aluminiumoxide)

2 Normative reference

The following standard contains provisions which,through reference in this text, constitute provisionsof this part of ISO 9361. At the time of publication,the edition indicated was valid, All standards aresubject to revision, and parties to agreements basedon this part of ISO 9361 are encouraged to investi-gate the possibility of applying the most recent edi-tion of the standard indicated below. Members ofIEC and ISO maintain registers of currently validInternational Standards.

ISO 1832:1991, Indexable inserts for cutting tools –Designation.

3 Types of inserts

The types of indexable ceramic inserts specified inthis part of ISO 9361 are the following:

– TN: triangular inserts, with 0° normal clearance:

— SN: square inserts, with 0°

– CN: rhombic inserts, withand 80” included angle;

— DN: rhombic inserts, withand 55” included angle;

normal clearance;

0° normal clearance

0° normal clearance

— RN: round inserts, with 0° normal clearance.

Inserts dealt with in this part of ISO 9361 are stan-dardized without chip breakers.

In general, the inserts are used with chamfered orrounded cutting edges, see clause 6.

Table C.1 gives the range of sizes for the inserts(see annex C).

4 Tolerances

The indexable ceramic inserts which are the subjectof this part of ISO 9361 are provided in toleranceclasses G and M, in accordance with ISO 1632.

The values of the tolerances in accordance withISO 1832 are given in table A.1. Other tolerances aregiven in table3 to table 7.

6.1 Cutting edge condition

The cutting edge condition of the indexable ceramicinserts specified in this part of ISO 9361 is to beselected from those specified in ISO 1832:1991, 5.1,

6.2 Additional information

The dimensions of chamfered cutting edges T, S, Kor P may be specified, following the letter symbolon cutting edge condition in the manufacturer’scatalogue. Such information on cutting edge dimen-sions, if specified, shall have the form of a five-digitnumber, the first three digits being the value of bYinunits of 0,01 mm and the last two digits being thevalue of Y*, in degrees (see figure 1).

NOTE 1 In the case of cutting edge condition K and P,

the first chamfer 67,, defined in accordance with figure 2,is at the manufacturer’s choice and is not part of the ad-ditional information (five-digit number) as described in6.2,

7 Designation and marking

7.1 Designation

The designation of the indexable ceramic insertswhich form the subject of this part of ISO 9361 shallconform to ISO 1832.

In addition to this designation, one or both of thefollowing may be indicated:

the number symbol for the additional informationon cutting edge dimensions, in accordance with6.2;

— the commercial designation of the ceramicgrade.

7.2 Marking

The following symbol, at least, shall be marked onthe insert itself (except when this would be difficultto carry out on smaller inserts):

— symbol of the commercial designation of theceramic grade.

8 Measurement

Annex B indicates the methods of measuring thedimension m of the indexable inserts covered by thispart of ISO 9361.

9 Recommended dimensions

The choice of the more common dimensions is re-stricted to the values given in table 3 to table 7. It isstrongly recommended that these standard insertsbe used each time wherever possible (first prefer-ence). When other inserts are required, their di-mensions shall be selected from the non-shadedareas of table C.1 (second preference). Inserts cor-responding to the dimensions given in the shadedareas of this table are not recommended.

NOTE 2 The m-dimensions are calculated using the ex-act values, rounded off to the third decimal point, of thecorner radius r,, in accordance with table 2.

Dimension nZ is related to the side opposite the cor-ner that is to be measured.
