Electric Lamps and their Auxiliaries Sectional Committee, ET 23

FOREWORD;

This Indian Sjandard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the ElectricLamps and thtir Auxiliaries Sectional Committee had been approved by the Eletrotechnical Division Council.

This standard specifies a system of nomenclature about the designation of the glass bulbs used as envelopes forelectric lamps. The use of such designation is intended to specify the description of the finished lamps towardsits shape.

With several types of shapes being used in the manufacturing of electric lamps, this guide will provide informationand guidance to the bulb manufacturers for proper understanding about the designation of finished lamps inrespect of bulb shape and classification.

—.——

This standard is based on IEC Pub 60887 (1988) ‘Glass bulb designation system for lamps’, issued by theInternational Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

GLASS BULB DESIGNATION SYSTEM FORLAMPS — GUIDE

1 SCOPE

This standard describes a system of nomenclature thatprovides designations of the glass bulbs used asenvelopes for electric lamps. The application of suchdesignations is directed towards the descriptions offinished lamps.

2 TERMINOLOGY

2.1 Bulb

The outer envelope of glass or other transparent ortranslucent material enclosing the essential compo-nents of an electric lamp.

2.2 Approximate Reference Line

A construction line transverse to the axis through theneck of the bulb. It defines the approximate positionat which the rim of a cap, such as an Edison screwcap, would meet the neck of a bulb. The sole purposeof the approximate reference line is to aid theestablishment of technical definitions of bulb shapes. This line appears in Fig. 1 and 2 as a C-D line. Nosuch line exists for pressed glass bulbs.

3 BASIC COMPONENTS OF A DESIGNATION

3.1 General

Glass bulbs should be described by a designationconsisting of a sequence of letter and number symbolswithout spaces, as follows:

a) A letter symbol consisting of up to threeletters which describes the bulb shape. Theletter or letters of this symbol may in somecases be a basic shape letter symbol onlyand in other cases it maybe a combination ofa basic shape symbol and a modifier ormodifiers. Basic shapes, modifiers andspecial shapes are deftned in 4.

b) A number symbol which states the major di-ameter (nominal) of the bulb in millimetres.

3.2 Rectangular Bulbs

Rectangular PAR-type glass bulbs should be describedby the letter symbol REC followed by two sets ofnumbers. The first number should designate thedimension of the shorter side; the second number shoulddesignate the dimension of the longer side. Thesenumbers should be separated by the multi-plicationsymbol (X). The dimensions should be in millimetres.

4 BULB SHAPE CLASSIFICATION

4.1 Basic Shapes

The basic shape symbols are listed below. Thedescriptive information used in conjunction with theassociated illustration in Fig. 1 forms the definitionof each shape.

and section that is joined to theneck by a radius that

has a centre outside thebulbhas a magnitude” greaterthan radius of the sphericalsection.is tangent to both the neckand the curve of thespherical end section,

NOTE — These bulbs do not have anysignificant straight portion between thespherical end and the transitional radiusinto the neck.

B Bulged A bulb in which the curve makingup the major portion of the sideof the bulb has a radius greaterthan one-half the bulb diameterand a centre in the plane of themaximum diameter. This designation also applieswhen tsvo radii are used, one forthe lower part and a larger one forthe upper part (candle type).

C Conical A bulb consisting of a conical ornear-conical end section, which isjoined to the neck by an approxi-mately hemispherical section; ifthe end section is not conical, thecurve making up the majorportion of the side of the bulb hasa centre below the plane of themaximum diameter.

E Elliptical A bulb similar to a “B’ shape buthaving the sides formed by asection of an ellipse.

F Flame A bulb resembling the flame of acandle having irregular flutes onthe sides.

G Globular A bulb of essentially sphericalshape.

K -- A bulb which is similar in shapeto an “M’’bulb, except there isaconical transitional section bet-ween the major diameter and theneck rather than a curved section.

M Mushroom A bulb having a sphericallyshaped end section blended, abovethe major diameter, to a smallerradius curve centered on the majordiameter, which blends with a

transition curve of approximatelythe same radius for joining theneck.

P— A bulb having a spherical endsection, and a conical mid-sectionthe sides of which are tangent tothe curve of the spherical section.

R Reflector A bulb that includes a parabolicor elliptical section below themajor diameter designed toreceive a reflective coating so asto direct the beam of light.
