Gaskets and Packings Sectional Committee, LM 19

FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (Part 1) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Gaskets and Packings Sectional Committee had been approved by the Light Mechanical Engineering Division Council.

In preparation of this standard, considerable assistance has been derived from IS0 4709 : 1985‘Cork - Composition cork material - Specification’, published by International Organization for Standardization.

This Indian Standard is being prepared in two parts as follows:

Part 1 Composition cork - Specification, and

Part 2 Composition cork - Test methods.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)‘. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

GASKETS AND PACKINGS PART 1 COMPOSITION CORK - SPECIFICATION

1 SCOPE

1.1 This standard (Part 1) specifies characteristics of composition cork material intended to be used as gasket in various industries.

1.2 This standard applies to composition cork sheets, slabs or frames obtained by pressure with granulated cork protein or resin bonded, with or without rise of temperature.

2 REFERENCES

The following standards contain provisions which through reference in this text, constitute provision of this standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and ‘parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below:

AND TOLERANCES

3.2.1 The nominal thickness of sheets, slabs or frames may be as agreed between purchaser and supplier.

3.2 Tolerances

The tolerances on nominal thickness of sheets, slabs or frames measured shall be as follows:

Thickness Tolerance (mm) (mm)

<I r 0.13

> I<3 + 0.25

> 3 <6 + 0.30

>6 + 5 percent but not more than r 0.40

3.2.2 Tolerances may also be as agreed to between the purchaser and manufacturer.

4 DESIGNATION

The composition cork gasket material shall be designated by the type of bonding (P or R) and the apparent density symbol.

where, P - Protein glue bond, and

R - Resin glue bond.

The apparent density symbols to be used are:

Symbol Apparent Density (p)

22 For 220 kg m-? 5 p < 270 kg m”

27 For 270 kg m-j I p < 320 kg m-3

32 For 320 kg m-3 I p < 380 kg m-3

38 For p 2 380 kg me3

Examples:

a) P 32

where

P is the symbol for Protein glue bond, and

32 is the symbol for apparent density (p) [320 kg mJ < p < 380 kg mA3]

b) R 27

where

R is the symbol for resin glue bond, and

27 is the symbol for apparent density (p) [270 kg mm3 5 p c 320 kg m-‘1

5 PROPERTIES

Properties of sheets, slabs .or frames for composition cork gasket material and sheets or boards with bonded seams material shall be as given in Table 1.

6 TESTS

Tests shall be carried out in accordance with IS 145’38 (Part 2).

7 MARKING

7.1 Each sheet shall be marked with the date of production, code and manufacturer’s brand name.

7.2 BIS Certification Mark

The product may also be marked with the Standard Mark.

IS 14538 (Part 1) : 1998

7.2.1 The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The details of conditions under which the licence for the use of Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.

8 PACKING

The material shall be packed in moisture resistant

packages to avoid deterioration during transportation. The quantity, thickness and designation of the material shall be shown on the outside of each package or as agreed to between purchaser and supplier.

9 SAMPLING

Take one percent of sheets from each package with a minimum of one unit or 0.5 m* and according to IS 2500 (Part 1).
