FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 9 February 1989, after the draft finalized by the Automotive Transmission Systems Sectional Committee had been approved by the Mechanical Engineering Division Council.

This standard is one of the series of Indian Standards on the basics of automotive transmission systems and the arrrangement of gears in the transmissions. This standard will help to standardize the industry practice and help in clear understanding of the functional inter-relations of the gearing, clutches, hydrodynamic drive unit and other transmission components.

In the preparation of this standard, assistance has been derived from SAE J 647 June 198.5 ‘Transmissions - Schematic diagrams’, issued by the Society of Automotive Engineers Inc, USA.

VEHICLES -TRANSMISSION SYSTEM -GEAR ARRANGEMENT-

RECOMMENDATIONS

1 SCOPE

1.1 This standard specifies through schematic diagrams, the gear arrangements in trans- mission systems of automotive vehicles.

1.2 F’or the purpose of clarity, the transmission in neutral and in gear have been illustrated.

2 TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL

2.1 Five Speed Countershaft Transmission

Fig. 1 illustrates five speed countershaft trans- mission which is constant mesh in all forward

. Each gear is identified according to the ~~f~cular transmission speed it provides when engaged, for example, first, second, third, etc. The numl>cr of teeth in each gear is indicated. Synchsonized and positive jaw clutches are schematically represented with a drive dog and mating slot in the affected gear. Two drive plates and one driven plate are used to desig- nate the plate clutch asseml,ly. The reverse idler gear is shown out of position for clarity.

2.2 Four Speed Planetary Gear Transmission

Fig. 2 illustrates a four speed planetary gear transmission in neutral with clutches and Lands shown disengagccl. Brake I,nnds and clutches are dcsignatccl as first, s~~oncl, third, reverse, etc, in accordance with their use. (iear sets are designated as Gl, G2, G3, etc. The number of teeth in each gear is also shown.

2.3 Three Speed Planetary Gear Transmission

Fig. 3 illustrat.cs a three speed p1anct;rt.y grar transmission wit.11 split torque path ;lntl cxtct n;tl gear final drive ( difii:rential is not illllstrated ).

2.4 Four Speed Two Axes Transmission

Fig. 4 illustrates a four speed transmission with chain drive connecting the two axes ( differen- tial is not illustrated ).

3 TRANSMISSION IN GEAR

3.1 Five Speed Countershaft Transmission

Fig. 5 illustrates the countershaft transmission in gear with the torque path denoted by straight bold arrows. Curved arrows indicate direction of shaft rotation. Active members are designa- ted with sections cross-hatched. For example, for engagement in the third gear, the main shaft third gear is clutched to the output shaft. This is schematically illustrated by means of the drive dog engaging the slot in the gear.

3.2 Four Speed Planetary Gear Transmission

Fig. 6 illustrates the four speed planetary gear transmission in gear with the torque path de-

noted 1)~ straight lmltl arrows. Curved arrows indicate direction of shaft rotation. Active memhcrs are designated with sections cross- hatched. For example, second gear is illustrated in Fig. 4. The pertinent brake hand is cross- hatched to denote brake application. Additional information added to this diagram is optional, ‘I’he speed of the sun gear, ring gear and carriers is designated for 100 rev/min input speed; clutch plate speed differential is designa- ted for 100 rev/min input speed; and torque of the sun gear, ring gear and carrier is designa- ted fur 1’00 ‘T’ input torque.

4 ONE-WAY CLUTCH DIAGRAMS

1;1%. 7 illustrates one way cllltch diagrams mm1perl to show the direction of relative rolntion l)c*twccri various elements.
