o. FOR E W 0 I{ D
0.1 This Irid ian Standard ( Part X) (S('cond Revision) was adopted bythe 111 dian Standards Institution on 16 Fcbr uary 1973, after the draftfinalized by tho Civil Works Measurement Sectional Cornmittcc had beenapproved by the Civil Engincering Division Council.
0.2 Measurement ocrupie-, a very important place in the planning andexecution of any civil cngincering work from 1he time of first estimates tothe final completion and se tt lvmcnt of payments for a project. Methodsfollowed for measurement are not uniform and consiclerable differencesexist among practices followed by different construction agencies andalso among various Central and State Government departments, \Vhileit is recognized that each system of measurement has to be specificallyrelated to administrative and financial organiaations within a departmentresponsible for the work, a unification of various systems at technical levelhas been accepted as very desirable, specially as it permits a wider rangeof operation for civil enginer-ring contractors and e lirninates ambiguitiesand misunderstandings of various systems followed. .
0.3 Among various civil engineering items, measurement of buildingswas the first to be taken up for standardization and this standa, d havingprovisions relating to building work was first published in 1958 anti wasrevised in 1964.
0.4 In the course of usage of this standard by various construction agencies ill the country, several clarifications and suggestions for modificationswere received and as a result of study, the technical committee responsiblefor this standard decided that its scope besides being applicable to buildings should be expanded to cover method of measureme-nt for civil t'nglrieering works, like industrial and river valley projects works.
0.5 Since different trades are not related to one another, the SectionalCommittee decided that each trade as given in IS: 1200-1964* shall be
·Mt~thod of measurement of building works ( revised).

0.5.1 This part covers method of measurement of ceiling and liningsapplicable to buildings as well as to civil engineering works.
0.6 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a measurement, shall be rounded off in accordancewith IS: 2-1960·. The .number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in thisstandard.
1. SCOPE
1.1 This standard (Part X) covers the method of measurement ofceilingsand linings for buildings and civil engineering works.
