IRRAWANG PUBLIC SCHOOL
An Innovative, Vibrant and Diverse Learning Community
Term 4, Week 10, 12 December 2014
This week has been a week of celebration with
our students at the centre of our success in 2014.
Over the last two days I have seen our students
conduct themselves as Aussie 5 Superstars at the
K-2 Presentation Assembly, the 3-6 Presentation
Day Assembly and the Preschool Graduation
Assembly. Congratulations to all the students
who received recognition for their achievements
and efforts in the classroom and on the sporting
fields, and well done to all students who showed
respect by being a well manned and attentive
audience. With our school captains and vice
captains Shaytarna, Ryan, Jaycob and Marley
leading the K-2 and 3-6 assemblies, councillors
Alex, Tarah, Kye and Melanie did an
outstanding job in their role of escorting guests
into the school. What a wonderful impression
our leaders left on the many parents and
community members who were in attendance.
Congratulations to the newly elected school
leaders for 2015. Captains Eden Burns & Paige
Perry and Vice Captains Izac Schofield &
Maddison Shephard will be supported by
councillors Caitlyn Bennett, Ashleigh Mitchell,
Tahlia Buckmaster and Samantha Roberts. I
look forward to working with our new student
leaders next year.
On Wednesday I had the pleasure of joining Ms
Turner, Mrs Turner, Ms Greenham, Ms
Jameson, Ms Madge and Ms Green in the hall to
witness 40 energetic and excited pre-schoolers
confidently dance and sing their way through
their graduation. I only had to look at the faces
of the many parents and family members in
attendance to see the pride and joy they felt as
their son or daughter graduated. Well done
teachers for giving our youngest students the
best possible start to school life. Your
enthusiasm and passion for your students was
contagious!
At the start of the year I talked about the 4 target
areas for 2014 -
Implementation of the new English syllabus
PBL - Strengthening our Aussie 5 rules and
school expectations in the wider
community
Teaching and Learning - supporting those
students who take longer to learn, or
learn differently, from others. Moving
our more capable students forward and
challenging them to take ownership of
their own learning
Parents and Community Partnerships -
getting more parents in classrooms,
in the canteen, at assemblies,
attending workshops, participating in
3 way interviews
Reflecting on how far we’ve come this year in
achieving our targets, I am very proud of our
success:
* Teachers are implementing the new English
syllabus with increasing confidence and
on-going reflection.
*With the establishment of the PBL
Community Sub-Committee we have now
formed partnerships with Raymond Terrace
Public School, Grahamstown Public School,
Irrawang High, Hunter River High and local
businesses to take the values and expectations
of PBL into the wider community.
*Team teaching in Stage 2 & 3 classrooms has
supported our more capable students in
reaching proficiency in numeracy, spelling,
reading and grammar in the Year 3 & 5
NAPLAN.
*Thanks to the participation and support of
our parents we saw the canteen re-opened
every Wednesday - our parent volunteers have
once again given of their time to support our
students.
This year has been a great year for Irrawang.
Thank you for playing your part!
Finally, goodbye and good luck Year 6 you
will be missed!
You have been outstanding role models for the
rest of the school. Your commitment to
learning, your positive influence on the
playground and the respectful relationships
you formed with your teachers has set you
apart from the rest - you have been young
adults of whom parents and teachers are
proud.
On behalf of your school and your staff, I’d
like to wish you and your families a safe and
Merry Christmas.
I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday
28th January for the start of the 2015 school
year.
With warm regards

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY LEARNING RESPECT
Our School Leaders Have Their Say
We had our Presentation Day on the 9th of December.
Our teacher’s were very proud for us. We were very happy once it was
done. It was great to see all of the children’s faces when they got their
awards and medals. It was also great listening to what the teachers
had to say about their students.
We would like to congratulate next years school leaders and we hope
they have as much FUN and as much enjoyment as we did.
We hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and a safe holiday.

GOODBYE &
GOOD LUCK
YEAR 6
Well done to everyone who has returned their borrowed Library books! There are always a few books that don’t
make it back before the holidays … but I’m happy for them to be read and read again during those long weeks in
January … as long as they do come back in good condition next year!
Congratulations to our two students who gained Library awards at Presentation Day this week. Lily Williams
should be very proud of her excellent borrowing record during her time in the Infants department. She rarely
forgot her Library bag during all those years. Well done Lily. Izac Schofield was an outstanding Library
monitor throughout the entire year ... constantly looking for ways to assist students during lunchtime in the
Library and always prepared to do an extra duty when another monitor was absent. I’m sure this experience will
be of great benefit to him in his role as Vice Captain of our school next year. Thank you Izac.
I would like to write a special thank you to Rachel Montgomery and Margaret Burton who have been tireless
volunteers in the Library this year. Their presence and hard work has meant the administration of the Library
has gone like clockwork, and Margaret’s Craft Corner has been a wonderful creative space that always had too
many students wishing to participate in the activities. Thank you both for the time and effort you give to make
the Library a better place for Irrawang students.
Happy reading everyone and have a safe, healthy Christmas!

LIBRARY NEWS
Chess News
Congratulation to our Ches medal winners at Presentation Day this week ... Tori Hickman, Kyle
James, Caleb Parker, Izac Schofield and Jack Shearer. I hope Tori, Kyle and Jack continue
their love of the game at high school next year, while Caleb and Izac will be our senior players
guiding our Chess participants next year.
Once again, an immense thank you to Mr Geoff Bertram for his support of all the students
showing an interest in Chess. He has such a passion for the game, it’s contagious! We very
much look forward to him being able to continue his involvement next year.
Keep practising everyone and enjoy a safe, happy holiday.

Active After School Communities The Active After School Communities program has finished for the year. I would like to thank
everyone for their support of the program and hope that all the children enjoyed the sports and
activities that we were able to offer. A special thankyou to all the staff who gave up their time
so that the children could participate in these sport programs. Your efforts are greatly
appreciated.
This is the last year that the Active After School Communities program will be available. The
New South Wales government is restructuring their sports programs and as of next year will
make available the Sports In Schools program.
The program will look a little different with some changes to guidelines and focus.
Unfortunately, as this program will not be introduced until Term 3 2015, there will not be
any after school sport programs available during Terms 1 and 2.
We will be able to provide more information about the program and what it will look like
during Term 2 of next year.

helped in the canteen this year. I really appreciate

There will be a new menu sent home first week back next

The canteen is still open for the rest of the school year
with Wednesday next week being the last day. We will
still be doing lunch orders and everything as usual.

CANTEEN NEWS
I would like to thank everyone that helped out on the P&C for the different events we had this year such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day Stall, Discos, the pie drive, Naidoc Day, Education Week celebrations. I couldn’t have done it by myself. We are a great team! We had a very successful year and I am very excited to announce that at the beginning of 2015 we will be able to start organising the new playground equipment to replace the old AUS Play equipment. Next year is already starting to look good and I can’t wait to see some new faces jump on board and become a part of our team. See you all in 2015. Wishing you all A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Have a safe Holiday
