MEN’S BASKETBALL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! JACOB JOHNSONJust the Beginning

! Our Iroquois boy’s basketball team moved to 3-2 record after it’s win over Doss on Tuesday. ! We began our season playing against

Western. We beat Western 82-51. Our next game was against Portland Christian and we destroyed them 86-32. We played our third game against Southern and lost 75-64. After a disappointing loss against J-town, we came out for an exciting win against Doss 59-50.! ! ! ! Our team is doing great and we should continue to support or Raiders by coming the games. Our next game is this Friday, December 16, against Seneca. It starts at 7:30, following the girl’s basketball game. The Lady Raiders are having a great season as well, so you should come to both games for twice the entertainment.

SCARVES: LOOK CUTE, STAY WARM! ! ! ! ! ZEYTUN ADEN! Scarves have been around for centuries, but during this time of year, a scarf is functional, fashionable and will keep you staying warm. ! You can wear any scarves you want, and still look cute and stay warm. All you have to do is wear it in the right way! JYou just have to look for the perfect fabric and design. There are many types of scarves. Look for soft, bright and elegant scarves as a way to switch up your look. You can tie them around your neck, around your shoulders, around your head or tie them to a bag. A bright showy scarf can really dress up a classic look and take it from timeless to trendy in second. You can tie a colored scarf around your neck

to make a boring dress or sweater more interesting. Never underestimate the cuteness of a classic scarf on your black bag. You can even make your own bag out of of the scarf. You just tie the corners together, and then bring the ends together in a knot to make a trendy shoulder bag.  The best thing about scarf accessories is that they are removable and exchangeable.  This makes them the perfect complement to mood changes, bag changes, and even weather changes. Muslim women wear a lot of scarves and know a lot different ways to wrap them. You can see three different scarves to make one seamless look.  Tie the first one around you r forehead, and then wrap the other two on top in stripes.  Then wrap the first scarf around your neck and your hair to complete the look.  Islamic head scarf also known as hijab was designed to cover the head and face of a muslim woman.  People might think its difficult to wrap scarves like this, but its not as difficult as people think.  You can wear scarves on your shoulder, you can make them into necklaces or bags, and you can wear them on your hair. You can wear scarves everywhere.

RUGBY: JOIN. PLAY. WIN. " CARLOS J. FELICO GARRIDO

Did you know that Iroquois High School has a rugby team? There is one being put together right now. What is rugby you might ask? ! Rugby is a style of football that is a style of football that began in the United Kingdom in the 19th Century.

Each team starts the match with 15 players on the field. Players in a team are divided into eight forwards and seven backs. Rugby is a gender neutral sport -- both boys and girls can play on the same team.

Mr. Klein is the coach of Iroquois rugby team, which is not recruiting players. “The current time commitment is two days a week. Tuesday and Thursday after school for conditioning,” said Klien. When the season starts in February or March, there will be two days of practice and games on Sundays.

The sport is getting more popular in Louisville and more teams are joining the league, which means more competition. “This season the league has expanded. We will play S. X, St. Matthews, Middletown, Atherton, Meade Co., and Columbus, Indiana. More schools will likely be added, said Coach Klien. “Joining is great for several reasons. First, the physicality of it. There is no sport like it in terms of getting in shape. Also, the

friendship and camaraderie are better than any sport I have ever played. The sport is great for contacts.  Personally, I was offered three jobs at schools just because of people I had met playing the sport.  Lastly, it is a worldwide sport.  You can go most any where in the world and play.  I have played in England and the US.”

TRACK AND FIELD: JOIN US ! ! ! ! ! ! ABDULLAHI KASSIM

If you are interested in playing Rugby, see Mr. Klein in room 200, during 1st period or by appointment.

! Iroquois is recruiting students for track and field. Track and field is a sport of many athletic competitions. There are many events you can participate in. If you are a good at running, jumping, or throwing this is a great sport for you. The jumping and throwing area is inside the field.

The running events are sprints, middle distance, long distance, hurdles, or relays take place on the track.

! If you are very fast but get tired quick, sprints is your category, and sprints are about 100 to 400 meters long. If you can run for awhile and get tired, you might want to run middle distance and middle distance is about 800 to 3000 meters along. A person with good endurance would run this event. If it takes you a long time to get tired, you will want to run long distance. Long distance is a very long race and a person with incredible endurance would run it. There are also opportunities for team sports as well as individual events. “Relay” is a group racing event, ran by four students from each school. In relays, each person running the event runs the same distance.

There are many jumping events, which are long, triple, or high jump. The jump events take place inside the field. Long jump is when an athlete takes a short run and jumps, and the person jumping the farthest wins 1st place for this event. Triple jump is similar to long jump but you hop, bounce, and jump. The high jump is when a student jumps over a bar that is measured .

If you like jumping over hurdles, you can do that too. There are spring hurdle races and long distance hurdle races. Spring hurtle races are 100 meters, and the long distance hurtle races are 400 meters.

There one throwing events and that is shot put. Shot put is where you throw this heavy metal ball as far as you could.

In addition to being a part of a great team and having fun through track and field, it can also help with your other sports. If you play another sport that may require running, you can run in races to enhance your speed. Join our team! We would love to have you! Contact Coach Irons for information or ask me in the halls.

Have you thought about your goals and plans once you graduate from high school? Do you have any list of Universities

or schools that you would like to attend? If not, it’s time to start thinking about it and planning for your future!! ! There are a lot of different things that you can go to school to major in such as, journalism, criminal justice, business, nursing, psychology and many more. These degrees can help you get the career that you want. Deciding on a college is an important step in planning for your future and getting into a college is something we need to be thinking about now. It’s always good to know what you want to do once you graduate, but you don’t have to know what job your future holds to make good decisions now. ! Getting into college takes work and we need to take it seriously, no matter what job we decide pursue. Even if you aren’t planning to go to college right after high school, it is important to have a good GPA and a high ACT score so that the option is there if you change your mind. Furthermore, if you do plan on going to college, the expectations are high and we need to work to meet those expectations. ! Attending the college & career fair got me thinking about college, and

here are some things I’d like to share. For starters, when your looking for a good college to attend, make sure you learn a lot about that school, look it up on the

internet, find different things about it that you once didn’t know.

Did you know that to attend University of Louisville, you have to earn a high score on your ACT? To get accepted into U of L, you need to have between 21 and 28 in English, and in math you need to score at least a 20. To get in WKU, you need to score at least an 18 on the ACT composite (over all score). You need to score a 17 in English and math, along with a good GPA to get accepted. To get into UK, you need to score 22 on your ACT composite, a 21 in English and at least a 20 in math.

! ! ! Almost all Universities in Kentucky require that students score at least an 18 in English, 19 in Math, 20 in Reading and a 24 in Science. Community colleges will accept students who do not meet these benchmarks. These popular colleges are competitive so the higher the score, the greater your changes of being accepted. According to Ms. Masero, “The ACT is a determining factor for college acceptance. Applying to college does not mean that they'll be accepted. I went to an ACT conference not too long ago where there were college admissions people, and they said that colleges are starting to look more toward the ACT scores because they worry high school GPAs might be inflated; they think the ACT more accurately reflects what a student knows and does not know.” For these reasons, it is important to begin focusing on college now -- take the ACT practices seriously, work hard in school to learn the skills that are on the test, and practice taking the test questions on www.ACT.org.

HOLIDAY

During this time of year, people of varying cultures religions celebrate different holidays. Although everyone doesn’t celebrate Christmas, many people in our school do. When my teacher asked me, “How do you celebrate Christmas,” I responded “like everyone else.” As I started interviewing people though, it was interesting to discover that everyone does not celebrate Christmas the same way.! ! ! ! !! Christmas is commonly celebrated every year on December 25th, but each family celebrates it in different ways – some people visit family, some travel, some don’t. Many families eat a meal together -- some have breakfast and others have a “Christmas dinner.” Another custom for many families is to receive and exchange presents. But that is not always the case.! ! !! Sophomore, Breanna McIntyre’s family celebrates Christmas by playing games. “We play a game for opening

presents. It’s called ‘Transfer Gifts.” We each draw a number out of a box. [Each box is associated with a gift with the same number.] If we have the number they pull out of the box, we get that gift. Sometimes there is nothing in the

box, sometimes there is present, sometimes there is money. Last year I got coal,” said McIntyre.!! Courtney Do’ane is from Puerto Rico and she celebrates Christmas differently. Her Christmas celebration last three weeks. She celebrates Christmas from Christmas Eve until “the Three Kings (from the Biblical Christmas story) come on January 6th.” Santa Claus doesn’t visit

Courtney, but its not because she is on the “naughty list.” In Puerto Rican tradition, instead of Jolly Ol’ St. Nicholas coming down the chimney, the biblical “Three Kings” deliver gifts. On Christmas Eve, “kids go outside, get a box, fill it up with grass. The kids place their wish list on the grass before they go to sleep. They put the box under their bed and wait for the camels to come eat the grass and leave presents,” says Do’ane. On Then the real celebration takes place on January 6, when they “go outside and roast a pig. We roast the whole body and eat it.” She spends time with her family during this season. “The main thing is that you spend time with your family during this time period. In Puerto Rico, it’s all about family –your whole life is about family,” says Do’ane. ! Whether you have will be visited by a camel or Santa, receive a gift from a loved one or a box of coal, whether you have a homemade holiday breakfast or a dinner at McDonald’s, the Iroquois newspaper staff wishes you a safe and happy winter break. May you carry on the traditions that are important to you, or maybe even start some of your own.

Are you always the first to know what people are talking about at school? Do you love to write? Do you have great ideas and want to be able to speak your mind? Do you have a talent that needs to be shared with the school?

! On Wednesday, December 14th, 2011, our Holiday Talent Show took place. Many students in the school performed through singing, dancing, playing instruments and sharing with the audience what makes them unique. Participants included Emily Lewis and Courtney Do’ane who sang a duet. Other performers included Terry Kitchens, Mohamed Haji, Devonte Wheat, Kayla Shamell, Tristan Caples, Anisa Stokes, Rashad Cobble, Sean Hand, Tashijia Baker, Sorapa Rasavongsuk, and Deirdre Cunanan.! ! !

! The talent show opened with a band that got the crowd on their feet. Junior, Elonte Allen, along

with her friends, led the crowd in dancing to the music. Junior, Destiny Marsh, said that she was excited about the talent show. She came “to support my cheerleaders, DeDe and Tashijia,” who performed song and dance numbers in the talent show.

! “It was a great way to end the week before the winter break. I loved seeing my students on stage, and it was good to see so many students supporting one another,” said English teacher Ms. Lewis. ! It’s great when Iroquois students get together after school and show their passions. It brings us closer together at a school. I am looking forward to participating in more activities at school.

MR. POLLITT’S ‘ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE’ GUIDE TO SURVIVAL

There are many different beliefs on how the world will come to an end, of these

many beliefs is the theory of the zombie apocalypse. A Zombie Apocalypse is when humans will be infected with some virus

or disease which makes them crave people for lunch. These are Mr. Pollitt’s

predictions and precautions for this upcoming apocalypse…

-So you believe that there will be a zombie apocalypse?

“No doubt. Every species undergoes an extinction event, asteroids destroyed the

dinosaurs, zombies will extinct us.”

-And how will these zombies occur?

“Maybe a disease from the jungles of Africa or Asia—or bacteria that comes to

Earth from a meteorite. OR zombies might be a different form of rabies…”

-Could be…but what do you think will happen when the zombies come?

“There will be 2 groups of people. Those who will try to cure zombies…and those

who will be killing zombies---I will be the one killing zombies.”

-Alright, so how do you prepare for this?

“That’s easy. I have 5 different weapons designed for different zombie scenarios. A

9mm handgun with an extended clip, which can be used for up close zombie combat. And my shotgun is ideal for up

close zombie attacks with multiple zombies. Example, if you’re retreating

down a hallway, 3 shot shells of buckshot would be enough to take out at least 4

zombies. My SKS semi-automatic assault rifle can kill 30 zombies in 2 minutes. My

favorite zombie weapon is my Mousin Nagat bolt action-500 rounds can shoot

and destroy in 400 yards. My other favorite zombie weapon is the machete,

when you don’t have time to reload.

-What else does society need to know to survive this zombie attack?

‘‘You will want to be on the 2nd floor of a building or living space. Go to the 2nd

floor and kill anything that tries to come up the steps. You will need food and a

fireplace, (you have to assume that there will be no electricity) to cook and boil water. You will eventually have to band

together with other HUMANS and attack the zombies...You can’t cure zombies, the

cure is taking off the head.’’

-What do you do if a zombie bites you?

“If a zombie bites you, its over, you will become a zombie.”

-Interesting…so you’ve seen the movie Zombieland right? Are the rules and guidelines in that movie

accurate?

“Yeah, cardio is important, double-tap, no not so much -- my gun doesn’t need it, it

can take off your head in a second. “

-Any last words?

“Yes, no fooling around during the zombie apocalypse. It’s going to be hard to handle

a baby and shoot zombies at the same time. Remember, it’s not ‘Survival of the

Fittest. It’s the survival of the most armed. You can work out all day….my bullet will

still stop you.”
