May 2014Dear Supporter,Welcome to our thirteen year Anniversary. It is really hard to believe we have been here that long, butwhen I look at myself in the mirror or look at so many of our earliest pigs I can believe thirteen yearshave indeed passed. As we celebrate our anniversary, we are looking back at milestones and I would have to say thatcelebrating thirteen years as the Ironwood Pig Sanctuary is a milestone in itself. Thirteen years of joyand sadness, hardships and successes, laughter and anger; and through it all never losing track of whywe are here and what our mission is. Pigs need a home and we are here to provide a home for them. Itseems simple enough at first glance, but simple it is not. Our first realization that our original goal of125 pigs was unreasonable and that the idea that adoption and attrition would keep our numbers stablewas naive, brought us to the reality that we would need to raise money to provide for our pigs. We have had to learn to run a business, be managers, hire staff, build a facility, deal with all the day-to-day emergencies and most importantly care for six hundred pigs and raise the funds to care for themproperly. Our newsletter and sponsor program were born to help with the task of raising the funds andthey have become the lifeblood of our organization. You, our supporter who receives our newsletter, breathe life into our sanctuary and keep our pigs alive. We would not nor could not have expanded toour current size over these thirteen years without your help. We all walk out to the fields in the early morning to start the daily routine of feeding and watering as wehave done for thirteen years now, and the anxious pigs run and squeal with delight and anticipation ofbeing fed. Their tails are held high and the young ones leap over things to be there first. It has certainlynot always been true in their prior lives, but since their arrival at Ironwood they never miss a meal. Wehave followed their lives from leaping and squealing to their final days when we must hand feed themand help to lift them so they can get up, to the final dignity when we help them continue their journeyinto the next world. For the hundreds of pigs who have passed through our gatesduring the past thirteen years, this has been our promise to themand their lives are our celebration. We are proud of our sanctuarythat has developed over the years and we are so grateful to all ofyou who have come along with us, some from our early beginnings. Thank you for caring,Mary SchanzPresident & Co-Founder

here are certain names thatseem to be very popularfor pigs….. Wilbur,

Penelope, Hamlet and of course,Charlotte. We have had plenty ofeach which can get confusingwhen referring to a particular pig.In March of this year we got yetanother Charlotte, one we hadbeen hoping and trying to get forquite a while. She belonged to awoman who kept a few breedingpigs around as a sideline to hermain business of breeding dogs. This wasn’t your top of the linebreeder though. Her animalslived in filth, cages of dogsstacked all over the house withothers running wild over theproperty, larger dogs killing thesmaller ones. Not even close tobeing a safe environment for a pigbut especially dangerous forbabies.

The woman’s neighbor, Susantried her best to be alert to thesounds of dog attacks in the pigs’area. Several times she jumpedthe fence to snatch a piglet tosafety while finding thedevastating evidence of those forwhom it was too late. Four of herrescued babies have ended upwith us over the past 2 years.Socks who went on to be adoptedby a wonderful family as acompanion to their other pig,Henry who lives in our MainField then Hope and Maddie whoare recent arrivals. Susan calledAnimal Control several times inattempts to stop the chaotic

breeding of both the pigs and thedogs. She tried talking with thewoman to convince her to stop. After multiple visits from AnimalControl, she was finally told tostop breeding the dogs and to getrid of some of her animals.Unfortunately the case was notfollowed up on and althoughthings did get better with theremoval of some dogs, it is stillfar from being over.

By this time Charlotte was theonly pig left alive. She wasdelegated to living in a small penwith chickens, turkeys, ducks andgeese. Susan kept pestering thewoman to please give Charlotte toher and finally in March of thisyear, she relented. Charlotte waspicked up and brought toIronwood. We were dismayed tosee the condition she was in. Aback foot is gnarled and twistedup in the air. She walks on the“elbow” joint of that leg, beingunable to use that foot at all. Herhooves were long, obviouslynever having been trimmed.Charlotte’s belly was dragging theground. Both of her ears aremangled, one being almost

completely bitten off. Yet, thispig has a sense of beauty aroundher. She has pretty blue eyes anda calm demeanor. Charlotte istimid but not afraid of us. Thereis a gentle dignity about her that isamazing in consideration of thelife she has led.

Susan helped to get morebackground information onCharlotte. The owner claims shebought her at six weeks of agefrom an Indian Reservation andthat her foot was already damagedfrom a dog or coyote attack. Shesaid that Charlotte is only 5 yearsold. The poor thing appears to bemuch older. If she is 5, then thehard life she’s led and thecontinuous litters have taken their

toll on her body. The owner alsoclaimed that she had not hadCharlotte bred recently and therewas no way she could bepregnant.

Well, we soon began to thinkdifferently. Yes, Charlotte’s bellydrags the ground partly becauseshe cannot stand up on all fourfeet with that damaged foot. Shetilts down to one side as she walks

The other five are hanging in withus, growing more each day, perhaps not as fast as they wouldon mom’s milk but growingnonetheless. Their nights andearly mornings are spent in theplay pen indoors. As soon as itwarms up outside they are takento the pen where they were born

to wander about and play in thedirt and hay, napping in thesunshine when they tirethemselves out. In the meantime,Charlotte is living in a separatepen and has recovered from her

illness. It was certainly not thehappy family scene that we hadenvisioned for Charlotte to havewith her piglets, but at least shewill never have to go throughanother pregnancy. Her breedingdays are over. Charlotte can lookforward to a relaxed “retirement”here at Ironwood.

no babies!” Charlotte’s belly gotbigger and bigger and was reallydragging the ground now. Everyday we worried and fussed aroundand checked on her often.

Finally on the morning of April3rd Charlotte went into labor. Itwasn’t until late that afternoonthat she had the first of ninebabies. The first five came ratherquickly, numbers six and sevenwere several hours apart with theseventh being stillborn. Numbereight came much later then sadlythe last baby was anotherstillborn.

Things started out okay with thebabies nursing well, but thenCharlotte began to turn themaway. She became ill and wasrunning a temperature, no longerinterested in letting the babiesnurse. That responsibility fell onus. We set up a play pen insideour Visitor Center and filled itwith bedding hay. A heat lampwas set up to keep the babieswarm. A feeding schedule wasmade out that involved gettingfresh goat’s milk to the babiesevery two hours during the daytime and every three hoursthroughout the nights. Themortality rate for bottle feedingpiglets is pretty high and sureenough we ended up losing two ofthem over the next couple of days.

on her elbow. But her tummy surelooked round! We took Charlotteto our vet for a sonogram and withmixed emotions found out shewas pregnant with a full litter nearterm. Babies are so cute…..butwe don’t need more pigs. Babiesare so fun to watch…..but wedon’t need the extra workinvolved. Babies are so adorableand easier to adopt out…..but wehave so many sweet pigs alreadyhere to adopt. The bright side tothis is that Charlotte would haveher babies with us in a safecomfortable environment for thefirst time in her life. She could bea good mom without living in fearof the next dog barging in tosnatch away her babies. And sothe waiting began….

We got Charlotte moved into the“baby pen” which had been babyproofed last fall for Karter and herbabies, another pregnant rescuethat you can read about in ourSeptember 2013 newsletter. Thehog panel fencing has been

covered to prevent the pigletsfrom crawling through intoanother pen or outside.Charlotte’s house was filled withbedding hay so she could make anice warm nest for her babies. Each morning we anticipatedfinding little piglets and at the endof each day we were saying, “Still

ear John,

I’m sure that the picturein this letter of you and your wifeCaroline standing in front of the1971 International 4000 gallonwater will remind you of the dayin 2004 that you delivered thetruck to us.

I am writing this letter to you tolet you know that we still use thetruck for a major portion of ourwater needs so that all youroriginal efforts are still bearingfruit and are still appreciated. We purchased the truck from anad in ebay that you referred us to.It was located in the Lancasterarea about 60 miles north of LosAngeles. We had a friend thatlived in the area check out thetruck to make sure it would be okfor us for getting water.

You offered to pick up the truckand bring it to Ironwood. The twofront tires were not in good shapeand at your expense you had themreplaced with new tires alongwith different rims. You also hadyour mechanic check it over andreplace all the filters and fluids.Since it would have been difficultto drive to Ironwood you actuallycontracted with a mover and hadit moved to Marana. Youmentioned that the steering had alot of play and it was difficult todrive from Edwards to yourhome in Los Angeles. Iremember your exact words. Yousaid that it was “very

disconcerting” to drive. Iexperienced that same feelingwhen driving the truck. A shortwhile after that I purchased arebuilt steering box whichcorrected the problem. As theyears have gone by we have usedthe truck more and more. At thetime of your delivery we neededto drive into Marana for anadditional 1,500 gallons a dayto supplement the 1,000gallons a day from our well. Now almost 10 years later withthe growth of our herd we needto supplement the 2,000gallons a day from a new wellwith 5,000 to 6,000 gallons aday!

We purchased a usedKenworth 4,000 gallon watertruck last year because we feltthat since we needed so muchwater we didn’t want to be atthe mercy of the Internationalin case it had a major problem. But so far it hasn’t had a

problem and keeps on chuggingalong.

Julian, one of our staff now drivesthe International. He likes todrive it and it is his truck to driveand I drive the Kenworth. TheKenworth is quieter and a littlemore comfortable with its airsuspension. We usually gotogether to get water twice a weekin the summer and when it isneeded in the winter.

Who would have thought that theInternational would have done sowell over all these years.

Thank you John!

Regards,Ben

Never in Their Wildest Dreamsometimes as I walkthrough the sanctuary andstop to look at or belly rub

or talk to some of the pigs whosurround me and are a part of mylife, I find myself recalling theirhistory. Never in their wildestdreams would they haveenvisioned what their lives wouldbe like now after their oftenhorrible nightmarish beginnings. Some of you may remember someof their stories when they weretold in our newsletters upon theirarrivals.

Vinnie was one of 60 or more pigsrescued in the late 90’s from anold woman and her mentally

handicapped brother in Florida. The condition of the animals andthe living conditions werehorrible. The pot belly pigcommunity stepped up to rescueand vet these pigs and after a longprocess many were transportedacross country to varioussanctuaries in May of 2002. Weaccepted 7 and 7 more went to St.Matilda’s in Queen Creek, AZ.

Vinnie was one of the group whowent to Queen Creek. On July 4th

weekend of 2004 Vinnie and therest from Queen Creek werebrought to live with us. He livedin a large field with hiscompanions for many years, buthe always had a back leg thatdragged behind him, probably aninjury from his early days. Itbecame too difficult for him to getaround, so we brought him intoour hospice area with new friendsand all the luxuries that go withliving there.

Blitzen and Noodles both hadenormous testicular tumors and

lived in small pens by themselves. They were two of nearly 75 who

were brought to Ironwood from arescue in Apache Junction over aperiod of three years. After theyrecovered from their surgeries, they lived in a large field withothers from the rescue but mostdid not know each other since themajority had been kept in smallpens. They too have grown oldand become too arthritic tocontinue living in a large field. We made the decision to bringthem in to a smaller field so theycould enjoy the increasedattention and amenities the olderpigs receive.

Annie and her brother Sammywere with us before we evenopened. We were called to takeboth of them and I was so glad weresponded. A friend offered tofoster them until we hadIronwood up and running. Theywere about a year old when wegot them and they lived in a tinypen on the west side of a mobile. The only shade they had was a setof stairs enclosed with plywoodso to get out of the sun they had tostand or lie down on the stairs. The people who owned them had

rescued them as babies from aman living in a remote desert areawho said he was going to killthem. Sammy has passed away, but Annie still lives in another oneof our areas of intensive care withher friends Betty and Momma andnow Gloria has joined them.

On January 15th of this year Bengot a call about a stray pig in theSan Tan Regional Park. Ben andJulian went to pick him up thatvery day. Julian thought heshould be named San Tan whichseemed fitting. He was quicklyneutered and after several weekswas ready to be released to a field.Hope arrived in March of thisyear. She had been rescued last

winter by Susan when she wasonly hours old from the samehoarder/breeder who hadCharlotte. All her litter mates had

frozen to death. She is now a littleover a year old. This week Hopeand San Tan were released to thesame field with six other pigs whorecently arrived at Ironwood. They almost immediately becameenamored of one another and areAnnie Getting Her Juice

now seen together almost all thetime. They had a big fight but inno time Hope came over and layright next to San Tan again. Whata delight it is to watch these twobecome friends!

So whether it is smaller morecomfortable areas with afternoonjuice and fruits, summer coldtowels and winter tuck ins withwarm blankets for the now oldpigs or new friends and a largefield with shade, water, shelter, and safety for the young ones, these piggies would have neverimagined in their wildest dreamsthey would have the life they nowenjoy.

his is our 13year anni-versary so the

pigs on our front andback covers are pigswho have been part ofIronwood or our Annexbefore there actuallywas an Ironwood. Theyare a part of the historywhen we werevolunteers and part of

why Ironwood came to be.

I first met Cinder when he and his sister Missy werebabies back in 2000 at the facility that is now ourAnnex. We were volunteering there at that time whenCinder and Missy were born the summer of 2000 andthen were adopted a few months later. I was there theday they were adopted, not thinking that a short twoyears later they would arrive at the doors ofIronwood. The woman who adopted them hadanother pig by the name of Piglet. In May of 2002 wegot a call from her saying she had to give her threepigs up and would we take them. So 12 years agoMay 6th Cinder, Missy, and Piglet arrived atIronwood. Cinder, Missy and Piglet, now 14 yearsold, were all released to our main field where theyhave lived all this time, except Piglet who had to bemoved to our hospice area due to severe arthritis.

Cinder and Missy were never really socialized duringtheir stay with their mom who adopted them. However they have been happy and healthy over allthese years. Missy now requires a mash and a feedingpen but she and Cinder still get around well. They goback to our real beginnings with pigs beforeIronwood was even conceived.

T

hile many of our pigs come from homesand are well socialized, many others willnever let us touch them, much like a feral

cat. Simba and Timone are two such pigs. LikeCinder they came from our Annex and both werebrought to our main facility due to health issues. Iknow nothing of Timone’s history except that helived his life at what is now our Annex and wasprobably born there sometime before we werevolunteering there.

I do recall Simba however. She arrived atPigs*A*Lot sometime in 1999. She was an adult butvery tiny and painfully shy. She had beautiful blueeyes, one of which is now gray due to blindness. Shewould circle on the edges of the herd and when I wasthere volunteering I would always try to sneak hersome extra food since she was too shy to approachthe herd. She eventually made friends and Timone isone of them. They spent most of their time togetherin one of our fields but now due to their failinghealth, we have brought them both to one of our pensso they will feel safe together for their remainingtime with us.
