Interschool Sport

Congratulations to all the Ironside SS teams for another successful season of interschool sport. I’m looking forward

to recognising achievements at a whole school assembly shortly. A sincere thank you to the staff who coached

and coordinated teams throughout the season. Sport (in general) and interschool sport is a valued and vital

component to the education of the ‘whole child’. Sport and competition teaches us valuable life lessons as well

as providing great insights to self. Well done to all involved in another successful interschool sporting season.

NEWS FROM MRS VECCHIO

Hands on Learning Together

A recent focus in Year 3 maths has been learning about the properties of 3D shapes.

Students have been working in cooperative learning groups to achieve a common

goal, such as constructing a 3D shape from only one sheet of paper. They have been

applying their mathematical knowledge plus group work skills – positive talk, ‘one voice

at a time’ and respect for self and team – to achieve their goal. Teams practiced and

presented their models using mathematical language. All in all, a well-rounded

learning experience!

“Kids Matters” Occupational Therapy

Kids Matters has sent us some information about intensive Handwriting Workshops that they offer during the school

holidays for children who experience difficulty with handwriting. If you are interested, please refer to the

information by following Kids Matters Handwriting Intensive 2017.

Booklists 2017

Booklists for 2017 will be published soon – parents, please don’t worry, you haven’t missed the

lists! A new supplier has been sourced by the P & C and the School Shop should have the 2017

booklists and ordering information out next week. There will be plenty of time to place orders

before the start of the 2017 school year.

NEWS FROM MRS BAIRSTOW

Student Leadership Process

We received over 40 written nominations from current Year 5 students, putting their names forward for school

leadership positions in 2017. This large number is a testament to the calibre of the Year 5 cohort, and the support

that they have been given by their teachers and their families to challenge themselves. Today, Mr Johnson and I

informed all of those applicants as to whether they were shortlisted for an interview, which will be held next

week. For those students who were not shortlisted, we strongly encourage you to consider applying for other

leadership opportunities in Year 6. Ironside offers varied openings for you to participate in the school community

as a leader, and this is certainly only the first of multiple opportunities ahead.

RI Christmas Concert

Coming home with all students today will be a permission note to attend a Christmas puppet show which is being

held in the school hall on Friday 25 November. The concert is presented by Quiz Worx and the content of show

centres around the story of Christmas, adapted from the Bible. This special presentation will involve puppets,

music, colourful visuals and storytelling. Further details can be found at www.quizworx.com. The opportunity to

attend this concert is open to all students in Years 1 – 6, regardless of whether they participate in Christian RI

classes during the school term. All students who want to attend this concert need to return the permission slip to

their teachers before Wednesday 23 November.

YEAR 4 NEWS

My name is Eleanor McCabe and I’m a convict who arrived on the Lady Penhryn. I love catching up with old

mates from England all this ‘ard work takes up so much time! It’s great just to relax and talk with me mates about

their journey to the colony of New South Wales. The little lass Elizabeth Hayward is a cheeky one, just how I like it.

It’s been a long couple of years and I’ve made a heap of friends more than I ever had in England. Mary Hill is

certainly me closest friend so far, she even helped me steal a little ration of flour. We didn’t get caught. I’ll thank

the lord for that! Imogen 4M

7 years transportation, 7 years transportation, 7 years transportation. Those were the words the echoed through

my head as the ship tumbled and turned under the firm grip of the storm. Just a few weeks ago, I was chasing a

lad down the street, nicking a loaf of bread and a few potatoes as he turned the bend. Hearing the police call

my name and watching as the gavel boomed to close my case. Now I was here. Away from everything I'd ever

known or loved. Away from my ma or sissy. Ever since my conviction, all I could feel was regret. The only good

thing that came out of this was a vision of my family sitting by the fire eating roast potatoes and baked bread.

That alone was not enough to make anything worth it. As another wave of water engulfed me, I swore to the lord

never to steal again. Cheryl 4M

The crashing waves hitting the beach of Botany Bay! Living History Day was great fun. The Living History did a play

about when an explorer left to discover the Great Southern Land and to find new species of plants and animals.

Living History Day was great fun. We got to dress up like convicts who were sent there because they had been

committing crimes in 18th century England. We had the chance to look at things they used like the cat-o-nine-

tales, a real musket and a ball and chain. Jarod 4M

WHACK!

I hope that’s not me next for the Cat-o-nine tails, because I’ve already had

that! In fact I had it 30 times! I haven’t introduced myself! I am Elizabeth

Hayward, I am the youngest female convict on board. While on the ship I

made great friends with the bossy Eleanor McCabe and fair, kind Mary Hill.

It’s been a long time since the great First Fleet set sail and I’ve made a

decent lot of friends! Quite a few actually tried to help me get a fair share

of food.

4M’s Moot Court with His Honour Michael Halliday presiding.

“All rise for the judge”, said his associate, Jack Hagan. “The criminal

court of the Old Bailey is now in session”. Prisoner Lorraine Thompson

was charged with theft, resisting arrest and contempt of court.

Constable Jordi Groom gave evidence for the prosecution.

It’s been a busy term in 4S! From our science incursion, to a visit from Living History, analysing “Rowan of Rin”,

being Data Analysers and working with Deadly Decimals. The incursions were particular highlights.

A convict aboard the First Fleet…

My ribs stuck out of my stomach as I could see the other prisoners nibbling on the corners of their hard tack. I

could feel another random convict’s chest going up and down as we hugged for warmth. I could hear the

groaning and sobbing of the other convicts locked up in the diabolical cells. I could smell the tobacco from the

guard’s cigarette. I wept as I could feel the thick dirt on the convict’s trousers. I was frustrated with myself for

stealing and promised I would never steal again. Maia 4Y

Australian Mathematics Competition This year a number of students from Years 2 – 6 participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition. The

Australian Mathematics Competition is run by the Australian Mathematics Trust for students from year 3 up to

year 12 in Australia, and their equivalent grades in other countries. Since its inception in 1976 in the Australian

Capital Territory, the number of participants has increased to around 600,000, with around 100,000 being from

outside Australia, making it the world's largest mathematics competition. With an emphasis on problem solving,

a valuable life skill, the questions are designed to be

challenging yet fun. Ironside students achieved excellent

results with many students receiving high distinctions and

distinctions in their categories.

On Friday 4 November, four Year 6 students, were invited to

attend the year 5-6 Australian Mathematics Trust Enrichment

Workshop. The workshops were followed by the AMT Awards

ceremony at King’s Christian College on the Gold Coast. The

students enjoyed the challenge the workshops provided and

were awarded their High Distinction certificates at the Award

Ceremony. Congratulations Peter, Xavier, Emily and

Anwesha!
