For the past year,Hayley Mullen wholives in Irlam, has beenhelping the team at‘Cherished Gowns UK’ torun perhaps one of themost moving anddedicated organisationsyou could ever wish to beinvolved with.Originally set up by two friendsbased in Kent; Megan McKayand Lynda Garrett, 28 year oldHayley initially got involvedthrough Facebook. Married tohusband Rob, with two youngchildren; Noah aged 6 andFlorence aged 1; Hayley wasdeeply moved by the work they did.

Cherished Gowns UK reusedonated wedding dresses;transforming them into gowns forstillborn babies. Hayley said,“Approximately 17 babies a day areborn sleeping or sadly pass awayshortly after birth. This equates to3500 per year. These babies canbe incredibly small and too oftenthe parents are unable to findsomething appropriate to dresstheir baby in.” The average

donated wedding dress can betransformed into around 20 baby gowns.

Megan and Lynda set up the group in 2014; following in thefootsteps of similar organisations in the USA and Australia.Their aim is to make sure that every baby is buried inappropriately dignified clothing.

Hayley (pictured) fromSandiway, Irlam, a former pupilof Irlam High School and herselfa keen sewing enthusiastadded, “Parents are given acomfort pack completely free ofcharge; that contains a knittedblanket, nappy, hat and booties;as well as the bespoke gowns.

The packs are distributed to over 114 hospitals nationwide, including Warrington, Bolton and St Marys in the North West. They offer comfort to those who have sadly lost a baby.

Hayley said, “We have plenty of donated wedding gowns at themoment but we are always looking for volunteers to knit blankets, booties or hats; as well as donations of materials such asgentlemen’s ties in light colours, knitting needles, ribbon andgeneral sewing or knitting materials.Donations to help fund postage, packaging materials and otherexpenses are all hugely appreciated. If you visit the website atwww.cherishedgowns.org.uk, there is a full list of items that can be donated and details of anumber of ways in which you can help. As the dark nights draw in ever earlier and theicy roads and cold of winter are just around

the corner. Now is the time to check yourvehicles tyres and get them replaced if needed.Fitting the right tyres to your vehicle is essential in orderto maintain safety, fuel-efficiency and handling. Part worn tyres should not be an option, whilst many partworn tyres look ok and seem a bargain in reality it is veryhard to spot some of the dangers that part worn tyresmay be carrying.

In a Nationwide investigation conducted by one of theUK’s leading tyre safety organisations, it was discoveredthat 98% of part-worn tyres purchased were sold illegallyand 34% of part-worn tyres purchased had potentiallydangerous forms of defects. Including illegal repairs,

bead damage and inner lining damage none of which canbe easily detected by someone other than a tyre expert.

At IRLAM TYRES they don’t sell part-worn tyres andwill only supply new tyres from reputable manufacturers. Business partners Tony Baldwin and Paul Lee have more than 35 years experience in the tyre industry and havebeen offering a ‘second to none’ service to the people ofIrlam and Cadishead for the past 22 years.

Paul said, “Our reputation is something we are veryproud, the fact that we keep getting repeat custom timeand time again proves how reliable, dedicated andcompetitively priced we are.”

Tony added, “Our client base is a who’s who of localcompanies and we supply and fit tyres to the likes ofLanstar CSG, Arnold Laver, G.U.N. Northwest Ltd,

PP O’Connor, O’Gara’s,Gillespie’s, North BankDemolition, Manchester Skipsand many, many more andthey all keep coming back, because they know we arethe name to trust for tyres.”

Irlam EstateAgent SteveJones iscelebrating his50th Anniversaryafter firstwalking intoIrlam EstateAgents onFebruary 6th1966 to startwork as a juniorat the age of just nineteen. Many things havechanged in the fiftyyears since then,Steve buying out the

Irlam Estate Agents business in 1987 and what started with justthree members of staff now has a team of 16.

Steve said, “When I first started half the office was the EstateAgents that first opened in 1960 and the other half a baby linenshop, things have certainly changed since then!”

The ‘state of the art’ offices now feature an estate agency, lettings department and financial services including mortgages, pensions and investments advice all under one roof.

Steve said, “We offer mortgages and advice to people all overthe country and have 1,000’s of financial clients.”

Steve has been married to wife Lorraine for the past 45 yearsand they have three children daughter Laura and two sonsSimon and Andrew who both work as mortgage advisors in thefamily business.

Steve age 69 added, “The first house I was involved in sellingwas on Eldon Road and sold for £1,600 whilst newly builtbungalows on School Lane were selling for just £1,640. TheSteelworks, Soapworks and Margarine Works were the bigemployers of the day and now they have all gone. But sayingthat the profile of the Irlam and Cadishead district has enhancedgreatly and there is a greater diversity of jobs, homes andfacilities creating a more positive identity for Irlam andCadishead.” Happy Anniversary Steve.

Local Irlamfootballfanatic EllisMitchell is wellon his way toliving the dreamof playingfootball for aliving, withfunding from theChris StocksFund. As well as playing forIrlam FC andvolunteering forCadishead SportsJFC, Ellis secured anapprenticeship with

Altrincham United and was only able to take up this wonderfulopportunity with the help of the Chris Stocks Fund who contributedtowards the cost of equipment and kit needed for the course plustravel costs.

Ellis, who went to school at St Teresa’s Primary and then StPatrick’s High, said, “I heard about ‘The Chris Stocks Fund' via theHamilton Davies Trust (HDT) in my home town of Irlam. The fundwas set up by Chris to help young people like myself who are inneed of a small amount of funding to help to secure a job or anapprenticeship. I'm doing really well at Altrincham and the financialsupport from the Chris Stocks fund has helped me tremendously.”

The Chris Stocks Fund is made possible due to the generosityof local businessman Chris Stocks, who worked in Irlam nearlyall his life, firstly for an engineering company and latterly for TalkTalk. Sadly Chris died in March 2015, aged 53, but he waspassionate about supporting local youngsters, specifically inpractical trades and apprenticeships. His wife, Ruth, iscontinuing the work of the fund with the support from localcharity, HDT.

Ruth said, “Chris wasn't the most academic of students atschool, but after securing an engineering apprenticeship andworking his way up the ladder, he had a very successful career. He firmly believed that learning a trade was very important andI'm very proud to be able to help local youngsters through myhusband’s legacy. Ellis is a fine example of how we can help. TheChris Stocks Fund has also recently helped two youngbeauticians at the local high school to purchase essentialequipment required for their course and a local girl from theWildlife Trust to obtain a specific driving qualification.”

Health chiefs across the city have joined forces ina new campaign – called Give Diabetes the

Finger - to help local residents understand whetherthey are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes andwhat they can do to avoid developing the diseases. Over half of Salford’s population is recorded as overweight orobese which is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes and healthbosses estimate nearly 20,000 people in the city are at high riskof developing Type 2 diabetes.

Now people are being offered a simple, quick health quizwhile they are out and about which could save them years of illhealth. If they are thought to be at risk, they will be offered aquick finger pin prick check which will confirm that they do havedangerous levels of glucose in their blood.

The campaign is being run by Salford City Council, SalfordRoyal Foundation Health Trust, Salford Clinical CommissioningGroup and social enterprise Unique Improvements.

Salford GP Dr Sheila McCorkindale said: “Diabetes is aserious, common, life-long health condition. It's the leading causeof blindness in people of working age and a major cause ofamputations, heart disease and stroke. There are around 3.5million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK with a furtherestimated 549,000 people who have the condition, but don’tknow it. About 90 per cent of adults with diabetes have Type 2diabetes, which can be prevented or delayed by making simplelifestyle changes, like eating healthily and doing regular exercise.”

Bridget Armour, Diabetes Prevention Programme Manager atSRFT said: “It is so important for people to understand whetherthey are at risk of the disease or not.”

Salford City Council’s health improvement service were outand about offering free diabetes checks at the followinglocations, Irlam and Cadishead Leisure Centre, The Woodwindcar park, Liverpool Road, Cadishead, Hamilton Davies Trust,Liverpool Road Cadishead, Nags Head, Liverpool Road, Irlam,Tiger Moth, Swallow Drive (pictured) and Tesco Extra Irlam,Woodrow Way. With the localelections coming

in May and a mayoralelection in Salford it’simportant to make sureyou are registered to vote. It also makes good financial sense. Not being on the electoral register isvery damaging to your credit rating, and will make it difficult toget credit. Credit providers will check with credit referenceagencies before deciding to give you credit, and these will relyheavily on the electoral register. This is not just for loans andcredit cards but also for things that you might not ordinarily thinkof as credit, such as paying your car insurance by instalments orgetting a new phone contract.

The way people actually register was changed a couple ofyears ago, so that everyone needs to make their ownregistration, this is called ‘Individual Electoral Registration’.Figures released last week show that since these changes morethan 800,000 people have fallen off the register, losing their rightsto vote, and making their lives more expensive.

It is also a legal requirement to register to vote if you are eligible.

You can register if you are 16 or older (but can’t vote until youare 18), are a British citizen, or under special rules, an Irish citizen,or a qualifying commonwealth or European Union citizen living inthe UK. For a list of these qualifying countries and the extraconditions you should go to www.salford.gov.uk/electoralregister.

If you are a student living away from home you can register atboth your home and term time address. Registering to vote atboth addresses means you will have a choice where to vote.

If you do not have a fixed or settled address you can stillregister to vote. You will need to make what is called ‘adeclaration of local connection’. If this applies then speak to thecouncil directly on 0161 909 6560.

In order to register you will need to give your National Insurancenumber, and your date of birth. This is to make the register morereliable, and to avoid people getting more than one vote!

You can register on line by going to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.You can also opt out of what is called the ‘open register’. This

is the version of the electoral register which is sold to businessesetc. for marketing purposes.

In Salford if you want to opt out of the open register you can dothis when you register, or by contacting the council, who isresponsible for the register. You can phone them on 0161 909 6560,or write to Electoral Services, Salford City Council, Chorley Road,Swinton, M27 5DA; or go on line at www.salford.gov/electoralregister.

You need to be registered 12 working days before anyelection to be eligible to vote.

If you have any problems, we are here to help you.For help from Salford Citizens Advice visit your local bureau in

Eccles, Irlam and Cadishead, Salford City, Swinton, Walkden orat Salford Royal.

Telephone our advice line: 0844 826 9695 (if calling from alandline or if calling from a mobile 0300 456 2554), which is openon Saturdays.

Why do I need a Will?Making a will is the only way to ensure that your estate isdistributed as you would wish. It gives you peace of mind

and saves loved ones from unnecessary anxiety.Dying without a will is dying intestate. If this happens you have

no say over who inherits your assets, so you could end up payingthe taxman rather than the people or causes you want to help.

This is one of three seminarsthat Colin runs under Mindset Mastery programmes. The other twoseminars are Business Success and Sporting Success.

The primary aim of all the seminars is to first help people todiscover what it is that they want in their chosen area, whether itbe personal, business or sports related and then teach them atried and tested five step formula on how to achieve it.

Colin is a keynote speaker, trainer and hypnotist who as anexpert in peak performance coaching, presents a fast pacedinteractive training workshop that guarantees to help you unlockyour true potential which can have amazing results in yourpersonal and professional life.

In these content rich workshops you will learn….

How to let go of any limiting thoughts, habits or beliefs that areholding you back.

How to become confident in any situation.

Debbie Yates from the Irlam and CadisheadHistory Society takes a look at the history of

Cadishead Labour Club that later became the Red Rose Inn.The area of derelict land on the corner of Kings Road andLiverpool Road was where Cadishead Labour Club stood. Thisclub opened in 1915 and was built specifically and as a politicalclub for the labour party, before this the club was housed inrooms in a private house in Irlam.

It was used for dances, whist drives and billiards. It was verypopular as the membership was very cheap. Being theheadquarters of the Labour Party, it was felt that their purposewould be better fulfilled if they included sales of intoxicatingliquors also being in the doorstep of the steel works in the idealplace for workers to stop off for a drink on their way home from

work. The club became licenced in 1931 withJoseph McLean the steward.

With a great increase in membership afterthe steel works expanded in 1932, plans weredrawn up for the extension of the club whichresulted in a large new bar and a new sportsroom being added.

By this time the Labour Hall as it was morecommonly known was becoming more of asocial club than a political club and by the late1950's it was agreed by a majority of membersto change the name to Irlam and CadisheadWorking Men’s club, although the politicalactivities were somewhat curtailed it was stillrecognised as the headquarters of the Labourparty. The political wing of the club becamefrustrated with the situation and decided tobreak away from the club in 1964 and the clubbecame purely a social club with a great

reduction in its membership.A new committee was formed who decided to redecorate the

club and renovate the club hoping to increase the membership. This took time as the members were renovating the club in theirspare time and when the steel works closed this did not makethings any better. The renovations were finished and thecommittee in an effort to remove the old image it was decided togive the club a new name and as it was almost on the Border ofthe two towns they decided to call it The Border Club. The clubwas still a non-profit making institution and it had a membershipfee of 50p (1979) it must have had the smallest membership feein the district.

Some years later the club was extended and renovated andits character completely changed and it changed into a pub andrenamed the Red Rose Inn. The pub has since closed and beenknocked down.

Hollins Green Litter

Despite the pouring rain hardy residents fromHollins Green, Glazebrook and Rixton were out

gathering litter from the lanes and hedges aroundthe parish on 6th February. Sixteen adults supported the Parish Plan litter pick filling 45 bagsof discarded rubbish in just a few hours, including children’s toys, traffic cones, wheel trims, a plastic bin and old wiring.

In the main the village lanes and roads were fairly tidy apart froma couple of areas of fly tipping. The main littering was along thestretch of Manchester Road from Glamis Wood on Swan Brew up toMoat Lane where the path-side hedges were littered with bottles, cans and food wrappers. Several bags were cleared along this route, but there is still a lot of litter to be picked up so this will be the focusof attention at the next litter pick which is on Saturday 18th June.

If you can spare an hour or two on this date please make anote in your diary and join others to improve the look of theparish. Meet at the Black Swan car park 10am.

The Parish Plan ‘Look of the Parish’ action group wish tothank the Black Swan for providing a complimentary hot drinkfollowing the litter pick.

Anumber of ‘travellers’ with up to seventeencaravans and the same number of vehicles

made camp on the car park at Irlam Football Clubon Silver Street recently.Warren Dodd from Irlam FC told the Times, “They arrived onSunday night, cutting off the lock and gaining entry to the securecar park. We have since been negotiating with police andauthorities as well as the travellers for them to leave. On Sundaythey asked us for £2,000 and they would leave immediately.Obviously we didn't pay.”

There was a good chance they would be moved on by thepolice on the Wednesday under section 61 Unauthorisedencampment but moved on themselves on the Tuesday evening.

Warren added, “They told us on the Tuesday morning thatthey would be leaving on Friday but obviously decided to gotonight. A consequence this week is that our 1st team homegame against Atherton LR FC was postponed. We were advisedto keep the ground closed. This is because If the ground is openthey are legally entitled to use the toilet facilities.”

Club officials were left with the task of clearing up lots ofrubbish and waste dumped and strewn around the football clubcar park before it could be used again.

It is believed that the travellers decamped from Silver Streetand made their way to the AJ Bell Stadium at Barton and set upcamp on the Stadium forecourt before moving on again.

Computer AdviceWith – Nigel Perry

In our regular monthly features in conjunction withWHICH Trusted Trader Nigel Perry from CadisheadComputers he looks at some of our reader concerns.

Readers’ Questions

This month we have received a couple questions through ouremail that I thought were worth sharing. If you have anytechnology related questions for publication, then email me [email protected]

Should I give websites my mobile number?

When I help customers set up a new email account some arereluctant to give their mobile number as part of setting upprocess. I understand why you wouldn’t want to in this age ofspam text messages, but this is a secondary means of verifyingyour identity.

The proper name for this is “two-step authentication” or “two-factor authentication”. There is a subtle difference between thetwo. The former means that whenever you log in from a newdevice (i.e. someone else’s PC) the company sends a code toyour mobile, which you must enter to access your account. Thebeauty of this is that if someone gets hold of your password theywon’t be able to get into your account unless they steal yourphone too!

A similar system allows you to change your password usinga code sent to your phone if you forget what your password is.This simplifies what can be a lengthy process if you lose accessto your account because you can’t remember your password. The later means every time you log in you have to put in anextra code. This method is used by some banks likeNationwide for example.

Of course neither of these are infallible, for example somephones and tablets don’t support two-factor authentication, butthere are normally ways around this using alternative emailaddresses for example.

BOGUS WORKMANPolice Officers are warning residents to be on their guardafter an elderly lady was duped out of £80 after a workmanknocked on her door and claimed that he was going toreplace broken flag stones at the victim address. The bogus workmen took £80 from the 87 year old lady and said he wouldbe back to replace the broken flags but he never returned and the workwas never done. Please be on you guard when people call at your door.

With an assault course, Yoda, light sabres andthe odd storm trooper the Star Wars Family

Event organised by Chat Moss CommunityEngagement Officer Lydia McCool and her Jediteam was out of this world! Lydia told the Irlam and Cadishead Times, “We attracted over100 visitors to the Little Woolden Moss nature reserve and feltthe force .... of nature! We set the scene that our humblenature reserve was the hidden Jedi training camp from the evilSith! Our younglings and padawans had to use their innerforce to tackle our Jedi worthy activities. Some of our themedactivities included making stick light sabres, throwingsphagnum bombs at the death star and finding Yoda hiding inthe bog!”

Lydia added, “We had a great time and got some amazingreviews from the families who came, roll on Easter for someHarry Potter fun on the moss! A huge thanks again to mywonderful volunteers; Ellie, Molly, Neil, Geoff, Jacob and Annaour volunteer driver!

If you'd like to get involved with our next wild families event or give us a helping hand just get in touch, Lydia([email protected]).”

Feel The Force At Woolden Moss

What are they? In thelast twenty years or

so they were world leaders, philanthropic charityendorsing radio DJ’s,winners of reality TVcontests and losers ofthese shows that went onto other bear baiting realityTV garbage to win becausethey managed to be nicefor a whole fortnight! The world has changedimmensely in the last year, somuch that out of the wreckageand sadness of our passing rocklegends such as David Bowie(pictured) and Lemmy, theatrocities in Paris and mostrecently the tragic deaths of thebright young band ‘Viola Beach’ (pictured), our perception ofwho we look up to has completely turned on its head.

Even though all of these terrible things have happened, itsunited us in sorrow and most importantly the want to change theway we focus our attention to what really matters and who wewill decide to invest our hard earned money in. Tragic indie bandViola Beach have reached No.1 in the iTunes chart after a tributecampaign backed by rockers Liam Gallagher and Tim Burgess.

Kris Leonard 20, River Reeves 19, Jack Dakin, 19, TomasLow, 27, and their managerCraig Tarry 33, all died after theircar plummeted 80ft off ahighway bridge in the earlyhours of Saturday in Sodertaljenear Stockholm, Sweden.

Their deaths have rocked theindie scene in Britain with tributes from celebrities, musiciansand even football clubs pouring out on social media. Fans of theyoung musicians launched a campaign to get them to no.1 and

in a moving testament to thegroup they have managed just that.

The late great David Bowiebasically invented pop music in anage before we had access to thewww. His style and expression thatit’s ok to be different transcendedthrough five decades, forging andgiving birth to most modern popidols of the modern world. Not asingle person had to vote for him!can you imagine Lady Gagarocking out in the cavern back inthe sixties she’d be out on thecobbles before the first eight bars.It must have been like running agauntlet of abuse every night forthe first ten years of his career. Buthe pushed through it and becamea hero to the world.

Heroes are now being restored to their righteous place, theyare not 1980’s record company born has beens that won somecamping trip in Australia. They are all around us struggling tomake a difference in the world like “The Eagles of Death Metal”going back to finish their gig at the Bataclan in Paris, SarahMurray from Irlam who is tirelessly trying to rebuild the£150,000 Skatepark on Princes Park and Jess Kemp who is inmy belief one of the best modern day recording artists on theplanet. These are the people who we support and it's becominga reality we are building a brighter future by supporting thegenuine people who have the skills to do it.

In Boatfest news Kay and I will be running the ManchesterMarathon (26.27 miles) this year, on April 10th to raise muchneeded funds for our charity “The Young People Project” andBoatfest if anyone would like to sponsor us please get in touchwe’re both on Fb or can be found most days at Si.COBarbershop 189 Liverpool Road, M445XH. This year will be thebest festival yet and I will keep you all informed of any newdevelopments right here next month.

The Chat Moss Projecthas teamed up with First Trans-Pennine Expressand the Forestry Commission to help the plight ofthe willow tit, a Manchester specialty. The project will be planting new groves of willow to create newhabitat for this tiny bird, whilst also providing suitable nestinglogs for them to nest in on the Wildlife Trust for Lancashire,Manchester and North Merseyside’s new Little Woolden Mossreserve in, Irlam Salford.

However, many people don’t even know what a willow tit is,let alone how to save it – to give people the chance to get upclose to nature and see these little balls of fluff for themselves,we’ll also be creating living structures alongside our new groves– perfect for small birds and children alike – and we want localpeople to be involved.

The Chat Moss Project are running a series of eight freeworkshops between February and April, where participants willlearn how to prepare, weave and create living structures andfences using willow, plus using their new skills to create willowsculptures linked to the heritage of the area. Participants canalso gain AQA qualifications, in addition to helping us savenature on this fabulous nature reserve.

Booking is essential, so please contact Elspeth on 01204 663754 or [email protected] to get involved.

The Chat Moss Project was established by Lancashire WildlifeTrust, with funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, to rescue andrestore precious lowland raised bogs in Salford, and to encouragelocal people to connect back to their mossland heritage. POINTS OF VIEW…TRAFFIC LIGHTS AT CROSSFIELDLet’s be honest, getting out of Irlam on a weekday morning during rushhour can be nothing short of horrendous!Could re-installing traffic lights between 7am and 9am be the answer? We know the controls were trialled and then taken away after complaints butthere must be an easier solution than queuing up for a ridiculous amount oftime every morning to get onto the roundabout at Crossfield Estate. This can only get worse with the opening of the Port Salford Developmentand the proposed Petrol Station and takeaway near to Crossfield. What isthe answer? What are your thoughts. Please let us know your opinions [email protected] or [email protected]

POST OFFICE PARKINGHave you tried to use Irlam Main Post Office on Liverpool Road, only tofind the car-park permanently full?? Yet on going into the Post office findthat it is empty? Is the car park for the use of people wanting to use the Post Office or is itthere for the convenience of the shops and businesses in that area? What are your thoughts. Please let us know your opinions [email protected] or [email protected]

ONE WAY – NO WAY!Have twice in the last few weeks encountered cars going the wrong waydown the one-way road at the end of Boat Lane that leads to Ferry Road.Taking an illegal shortcut, not noticed the no entry signs or just too lazy toobey the rules, the road is one way and a no entry from the Boat Lanedirection. Should a camera or extra police patrols be installed to preventthis problem which is going to lead to ahead on crash in the not too distantfuture. Drivers be aware. What are your thoughts. Please let us know youropinions at [email protected] or [email protected]

EXPIRY DATEDespite the long-term benefits on offer, many savers willstill fail to make the most of this year’s ISA allowance.Although the Chancellor left the annual ISA allowance unchanged inhis Autumn Statement instead of applying an inflation-linkedincrease, the opportunity to shelter up to £15,240 with no further taxto pay on income, and growth free from Capital Gains Tax, is still avery attractive and valuable one. What also hasn’t changed is thatyour allowance will be lost forever unless you invest before the end of the tax year.Yet the majority of ISA savers still fail to make the most of the opportunity, with Interest rates being at an all time low.According to the Bank of England, savers are receiving an averageinterest rate of just 0.85% – lower than the 0.99% reported in December. Many banks are now paying higher rates of interest on current accountsthan savings accounts. The introduction of the Personal Savings Allowance from April makes thereal value of such tax savings even more questionable. The newallowance applies to standard current and savings accounts and willenable basic rate taxpayers to earn tax-free interest of up to £1,000.Therefore, if you can deposit cash in an instant access account earningtax-free interest, why would you need a Cash ISA?The reality is that the tax benefits of an ISA can only be maximised byinvesting for the long term in assets that offer the scope for attractivelevels of income and capital growth. There is still time for those looking totake advantage of the tax-saving and investment opportunities presentedby the end of the tax year. Making the best use of your ISA allowancebefore it’s too late would be a good start. For further information or advice on any of the above, please contactSteven Payne at Chris Wilkinson Estates on 0161 777 9988 or [email protected]

LANSTARWHERE HEALTH & SAFETY IS NO JOKE

Over-zealous ‘Health & Safety’ procedures often attract scorn and derisionfrom some sections of the popular press. But for a company like CSG Lanstar, which has its waste management facility in Liverpool Road, Cadishead, it isnever something to be taken lightly. No industry is risk-free and waste management is no exception. That’s why companies working in this sector are subject to astrict regime of legally enforceable health and safety measureslaid down and policed by the Environment Agency. At the same time, Lanstar employs its own team ofCompliance Managers whose job it is to ensure that allthe company’s working practices meet best practicestandards at all times and comply with regulationsdesigned to protect not only people but the environment. The company’s detailed H & S management system hasbeen drawn up to protect the interests of staff, customers andthe general public so is given the highest priority by the company’ssenior management which has committed all necessary resources to ensurea safe and healthy working environment at all times. But, of course, a company’s carefully thought out H & S programme canonly succeed if all members of staff also take personal responsibility fortheir own safety and follow the correct procedures designed to keepthem out of harm’s way.

That’s why Lanstar is redoubling its efforts this year to remind all of its employees to always follow four key rules – Always wear the personal protection gear provided by the company – items likeear protectors and industrial gloves.Take the time to ‘Stop and Think’ before carrying out a potentially hazardous task.If in doubt about the correct way to proceed, always ask for advice.Always report ‘near misses’ or incidents so that the company has the informationto make improvements where necessary.

No company manages to stay completely incident free, but with a proper H & S management plan, supported by a workforce kitted out with the

correct equipment and conscious of its personal responsibility, therisks of an accident can be minimised. But the company goes further than this by inviting in objectiveexperts who are able to make an impartial third partyassessment of Lanstar’s health and safety performance. Only when the inspectors are satisfied that the company ismeeting the very highest levels of safety will they grant Lanstaraccreditation to a formal quality standard.

One of the fastest-growing H & S assessment organisations in theUK is Safecontractor, and Lanstar has successfully renewed its

membership to this scheme.Businesses seeking Safecontractor approval undergo a vetting process whichexamines health and safety safeguards in place and a company’s track recordfor safe practice. It only awards membership to companies demonstrating realcommitment to achieving excellence in H & S. Lanstar is delighted that it qualifies for membership – but realises that nocompany can rest on its laurels in the quest for a 100 per cent safety record.

STEEL MARCH ON TO CUP FINALIrlam Steel progressed to the Final in theManchester County FA Challenge Trophy havingbeaten fellow Manchester Football League side,East Manchester on penalties. The two sidescouldn’t be separated during the 90 minutes with it finishing 2-2.It was a case of ‘Déjà vu’ for East Manchester as the Steelmen knockedthem out for the second year running.Irlam were by far the better team during the first period and shown a desireand fight for a place in the Final of what is a prestigious and historic cupcompetition. The work rate of the Steelmen was un-matched by theiropponents and prevented them from playing their usual slick football whichhas seen them top the league. The first real effort on goal came from nothing and it was from Irlam’s Liam May.The ball sat up nicely and he hit a looping effort which struck the cross bar. However just a few minutes later the Steelmen deservedly took thelead. The chance came about through sloppy defending and a stray passwent straight to Jordan Byrne whose left footed effort found its way into thefar corner. The visitors upped their work rate and on the stroke of half time DannyWilliams rounded Jack Sedgewick to put his team back on level terms. The visitors were quick out of the blocks for the second half and full of

confidence, a half in which they had the better of play and chances. Irlam had the post to thank when a free kick was deflected past the rootedSedgewick as it saved them from going behind. However, the visitors did take the lead just 5 minutes later. Again it wasDanny Williams who’s flick-on header could not be cleared off the line andnestled into the roof of the net.The joy of being in front was short-lived for East as the Steelmen quicklybrought it back to all-square with a superb effort from Liam May. His effortin the first half hit the bar and went over but this strike from 25 yards waseven better. Jamie Cross in the East goal could do nothing but watch it flypast him into the top corner. It was a goal out of nothing but it was worthy ofan effort.Tension was building amongst the players as the game crept towards fulltime and with 10 minutes to go the visitors were reduced to ten men. But despite having fewer men it was East who came closest to winning itin normal time. Matt Roberts, who was excellent throughout the game, saw his fierce effort from 20 yards crash off the post and he was denieda winner for East.Full Time Irlam Steel AFC 2 East Manchester FC 2.The tie went to penalties just like it did in last year’s tie and again theSteelmen came out on top with goals from Tom Richardson, Daniel May,Ryan Cuthbert and Mark Jones sealing a 4-2 win on penalties.Irlam Steel now face Cheshire League side Wythenshawe Town in theManchester County FA Challenge Trophy final representing the ManchesterFootball League.

Irlam Pupils Lead The Way

Irlam and Cadishead Leisure Centre was thevenue for this year’s Annual Sports Hall Athleticscompetition. The competition is a two-day eventwith over 20 primary schools from across Salfordtaking part. Our local school Irlam Endowed has had a long history ofparticipating in all sporting competitions across Salford but thisis one where the children take a rest from competing andswapped their trainers for clip boards and stop watches.

Leadership plays an important part in the curriculum at IrlamEndowed and all the children are taught leadership skills withintheir PE lessons. The Sports Hall Athletics competition is wherethese leadership skills are put to the test. All of the children fromYear 5 lead one full day of the competition. This meant they hadto facilitate a station at the tournament where they had todemonstrate, measure and record the jump, run or throwaccurately and fairly.

The children from Irlam Endowed, as always have donethemselves proud with many teachers and adults at the eventsaying that the children were a credit to their school. Tournamentorganiser, Dean Gilmore told the Times, “this is the third timechildren from Irlam Endowed have officiated this event. They dida great job as always and we will not hesitate to use childrenfrom Irlam Endowed again.”

Irlam player Matty Boland received the Leagueplayer of the month award for November after onlymaking his debut for the Silver Street men inOctober making his debut for Irlam in a 3-0 winaway at Stockport Town. With the game goalless at the break, Matty’s obvious qualityshone through as he struck his debut goal for the Club, a twenty-yard strike from the edge of the box to open the scoring anddrawing applause from all over the ground.

The breakthrough allowed Irlam to grab a second, but theafternoon belonged to Matty, a perfectly executed lob from theIrlam forward leaving the Stockport keeper stranded to make it 3-0 and earn him the man of the match award on the day.

Since that debut he has scored several important goals andmade some important assists to rightly win the nomination ofplayer of the month for November. Due to the weather andpostponement Matty did not receive his award (pictured) untilJanuary. Well done Matty.

Cadishead Girls

Seems a long time ago when I played forCadishead U12’s and now back at CadisheadJFC many years later coaching the local girls footballteam is something I have always wanted to do.Myself and Lee Hilton started the team ten weeks ago with someof the girls never playing football before and coming to gainsome football skills, make friends and have fun. 10 weeks later, too see all the girls playing a game of football with a smile ontheir face was a great achievement in itself.

A last minute arrangement of a friendly saw Cadishead Girlsplaying Eastleigh girls U12’s who sit top of the division B Leaguein the South Manchester Girls Football League (SMGFL), theleague where the girls are hoping to compete in starting nextseason. So this was a great experience for the girls.

All the girls arrived at Rowson Drive excited for the game withmany not really knowing what to expect. The game started withthe respect hand shake, something that the girls will have to doprior to kick off in every game in the SMGFL. Kick off came andthe amount of support from friends and family that the girls hadwas over whelming and reminded me that this is what footballwas all about!

Eight minutes into the game and Cadishead girls were 2-0 upwith goals from Rebecca Pike and Poppy Cooke, with somegreat team work. Poppy saw herself getting 3 more goals, withher goal tally now on 4 after the first game and Summer Hiltonscored a further two, one from the penalty spot. Eastleigh werealso on the score sheet with four goals. The final score ended 7-4 to the newly formed Cadishead girls U12’s. It was so nice tosee the smiles and enjoyment on all the girls faces as I can guessthey didn’t expect to play as well together as they did today.

Although all girls played amazingly, myself and Lee decidedthat Libby Sanderson won Player of the Match with anoutstanding performance.

All girls in school years 4-9 are welcome to come and trainand get involved in this new exciting team. For any information, please do not hesitate to contact Rebecca on 07463 747 404 orLee on 07982 239 607.

Quicksticks For Local Schools

IRLAM FCrecentlyhosted a Pumaadvertisingcampaign, featuringManchester Cityplayers SergioAguero andYaya Toure. The day cameabout at prettyshort notice, butwas well worthdoing as ClubSecretaryWarren Doddtold the Times.

“We got a call from a media company, The Production Office, based in Manchester who were looking for an appropriate venuefor filming some football related shots. No more information than

that. Like many Clubs, we are always a bit sceptical of calls outof the blue, but nonetheless agreed to meet the contact.

On arrival at the ground, it was clear that we were onto agood thing, the company informing us they were representingPuma and were filming for their new football boot range , to belaunched prior to Euro 2016.

Things moved pretty fast, and within days, we were hostingan event, with Puma representatives flying in from Europe andAmerica. The event was very much under wraps, with us signingconfidentiality agreements to ensure everything was keptconfidential. Once underway, our new Clubhouse became a realmedia hub, with every table covered with laptops, filmingequipment and kit and boots.”

The stars of the show, were Manchester City players, YayaToure and Sergio Aguero (pictured). Itwas great to see the players in actionat IRLAM FC as they went throughtheir paces at the ground, goingthrough action shoots with the newproducts. ANGLING NOTESBy SwingtipThe Old River was in dour moodwhen I ventured out for my firstsojourn since Christmas. Carrying afoot of extra freezing cold water,

conditions were verging on the impossible.Basically I went out to get some fresh air in my lungs and also to test out mynew thermal suit under somewhat extreme conditions. The air was like a vintage wine and the thermal suit absolutely spot on! As I sat there gazing at my motionless float, I drifted back to happy times ofyesteryear. My favourite place in the early days was the River Weaver. I could say it was where I learned to fish, really. We used to catch the ‘workman’s special’, a train from Manchester toChester, I think we used to alight at Hartford and Greenbank station andmake our way to the weaver at Vale Royal. In the summertime bats used to flutter about our heads as we walked under

railway viaduct. The fishing was very good in those days, Roach and Perchplenty of them, with the odd Tench and Bream thrown in for good measure. In the meantime when the weather was grim and the fishing likewise, weused to take it in turns to go to Alf Maddock’s cottage where you get a jug oftea and a warm in the kitchen for nine pence, no thermal suits in those days!I can remember one occasion when my brother Fred actually saved my life. The River had been dredged at Vale Royal and the resultant mud off thebottom had been deposited in a pit near the riverbank. The pit had frozenover during a severe overnight frost. I thought it was solid ground as I triedto walk across. I quickly sank up to my chest in the evil smelling mud. If ourkid hadn’t been able to drag me out I’m sure I’d have been a goner.I fished my first ever match on the weaver and it was the Juvenile CoronationCommemoration Contest (what a mouthful) in 1953. I finished second andwon a brass spill holder bearing the queen’s image. My mother avidly kept itpolished, proud as punch she were!On my way home from the Old River I passed a shop with a sign outsidewhich read, “Chicken dinner fifty pence” I thought “I’ll have some of that” soin I went, handed over my fifty pence and they gave me a handful of corn.Chicken Dinner – Corn ? Oh please yourself !!!

After last year’s very successful inaugural watersports festival for Salford Schools, students

once more flocked to Irlam Pool to enjoy threehours of fun, non-stop water polo competition.

Returning schools included ClarendonRoad with 2 teams, Holy Family with 2 teams, and IrlamEndowed with 3teams. Cathedralschool alsoattending thisyear’s competitionfor the first time.

The tournamentwas played in great

spirit and the level of play was fantastic. With all school bringing more than one

team, it was decided to have twoseparate leagues for A and Bteams.

In the B team league all thescores were very close withClarendon Road B Team justfinishing in first place. In the A

team league, scores were much closer and actuallyended up being won by the narrowest of margins on goaldifference. With Irlam Endowed (players pictured) winning thecompetition for the second year running.

Teacher Jude Scrutton told the Times, “Irlam Endowedhave been using the sport of water polo in curriculum time aswell as after school for four years now and the children allenjoy the sport very much.”

Great Britain has a greattradition in Water Polo havingbeen credited with inventing thegame and having won fourmedals in consecutiveOlympics however we have notbeen in a position to competeat Olympic level since 1956.

With UK Sport’s first ever injectionof money into Water Polo in 2006, thesport was given the opportunity torapidly develop an elite culture, cultivating not only a centralised, elitehigh performance centre for thesenior squads capable of competingon the world stage, but a platform forthe age group programmes todevelop through.

British Water Polo has excelled inraising the sport from an amateur level to a full-timeprofessional sport within the country in the high performancecentre at Manchester Aquatics Centre. A high performance environment has been created which haschanged the landscape of British Water Polo, so that otherEuropean and world countries now recognise us as a truecontender to achieve success.

The junior and senior squads have thrived in thiscentralised environment and excelled in their

Anyone owning a second property that isn’t their main residence and buyinganother, or replacing the one they don’t live in, is likely to get caught up in thechanges Proposed. The higher rates will only apply to additional propertiespurchased in England, Wales and Northern Ireland on or after April 1st 2016.

What are the new rates?

The Treasury has tried to close any loopholes Buyers could use to beatthe stamp duty squeeze, So can you get around it??

Buying a home and keeping your old one or flipping your main residence.‘Flipping’ a main residence was a popular activity exposed during the MPs’expenses scandal. Politicians would change where their main residence was sothat they could avoid capital gains tax incurred on second home sale profits. TheTreasury is being pretty strict on the definition of a main residence when it comesto the extra stamp duty charge. If you buy a second property you will alwayshave to pay the higher rate of stamp duty, even if you plan to live in it and rent outyour old one. If you keep your old home at the time of completion you will needto pay the extra stamp duty charges, even if you move into a new main residence. The only leeway is that you can get a refund of the stamp duty if you sell your oldproperty within 18 months. This aims to help those who may hit delays in theselling process. You will need to apply for the refund through HMRC.

Buying in your husband or wife’s name. The government will treat married couples and civil partners living together asone unit. This means any homes owned by either partner will be included whenthe stamp duty bill comes due on the purchase of another property. An individualbuying a property may be liable for the higher rates if his or her spouse or civilpartner has an existing residential property.

Purchasing a property for children to live in.Parents are often keen to help their children on to the property ladder, but couldbe hit with extra stamp duty under the proposals if they buy a home for them tolive in or buy in joint names. The only way round this would be to buy the homein the child's name outright.According to the consultation document, if a couple buy a separate property fortheir child and are named on the deeds then, if they already own a home, theywill be charged the higher rate. Even if a mother or father buys a property jointlywith their daughter, they will be charged extra the stamp duty if they alreadyowns a property.

Buying if you own a home abroad.Property owned globally will be relevant in determining whether a propertypurchased in England, Wales or Northern Ireland is an additional property. This means that if someone is purchasing their first or only property in England,Wales or Northern Ireland, and they already own a property outside these areas, they may have to pay the higher stamp duty rate. This would apply to a foreignhomeowner buying in Britain, a Briton with a holiday home, or someone whoowns a Scottish property.

The exemptions

Caravans and houseboats,

Property worth less than £40,000,

Social landlords,

Companies Owning 15 Properties or More.

So what does it mean for us?With an uncertainty whether the new legislation will come into play and adecision by the chancellor which will be concluded on the 16th March,Courtyard can confirm a substantial increase in the number of peoplewanting to purchase now and quickly to avoid any potentialCharges. No one can predict how the changes will affect themarket at this moment but keep your eyes peeled andwatch this space as the property market in thewhole UK could be heading for anabrupt change.
