    Irene: Building Back Branford

damage to homes along the shoreline after Irene. While two homes sustained

    Irene Anniversary: One Year Ago

    by Nicole Ball

When I first moved to Branford, everyone kept talking about the Hurricane of

    38. I would often roll my eyes when someone brought up this antique storm.

Then I lived through Irene. Even though Irene was not even a hurricane when

it hit our coast on Saturday, Aug. 27 and Sunday, Aug. 28, the storm surge

equaled or even rivaled that of the 38 hurricane as some locals account. This

is certainly an act of Mother Nature I wont soon forget. Like some of youwho live along the coast, my apartment was badly damaged during the

Irenes Price Tag: $600,000 and Climbing

    by Nicole Ball

Did you know it cost the town $4,377 to move a fire hydrant on Linden

Avenue after Irene so traffic could be re-directed away from the heavily

damaged road? Its also going to cost the town near $250,000 for expenses

incurred during and after Irene at the sewage treatment plant. Branfords

Finance Department Head Jim Finch, said, I cant tell you what I think its

going to be, of the final cost of the storm, but added, he's confident it will be

more than the approximate $600,000 he requested from the Board ofFinance at last weeks meeting. Its important to recognize, he said, that

Local Leaders Slam CL&P's Storm Response

    by Eileen McNamara

While utility officials lauded their response to Tropical Storm Irene during a

legislative hearing Monday, leaders of local towns castigated those efforts,

saying the storm response was in such disarray that some work crews sat for

hours doing nothing while residents struggled without power, and that even

company liaisons sent out to work with the towns had no way to get hold of

their supervisors for information. For nearly two hours Monday afternoon, the

town leaders detailed the problems they had with CL&P and other utilities,

I woke up on the Sunday of Irene and was a little excited to see the damage.

It almost felt like when you wake up on Christmas and look outside to see if it

snowed a foot and you can settle in to opening presents and eating

cinnabons with coffee at a leisurely pace, since you couldn't possibly go

anywhere. Leaves everywhere and a smell of fall were surprisingly pleasant

considering I was expecting the nightmare from above. I went outside, took

videos and pictures, had a branch fall on me while snapping shots and then

went inside to see if I could coax the last of the hot water for some

    Branford Hurricane: 1938 and Today

FEMA Offers Aid to Most in Need

    by Nicole Ball

Last night at 5 p.m., FEMA supplies like water, batteries and MRE (Meal

Ready to Eat) were delivered to Branford's most needy after more than 80

hours of being in the dark since Tropical Storm Irene wrecked havoc across

the East Coast. Walmart, which serves as a distribution point for the items

but not a dispensary, had volunteer employees deliver the aid items to

citizens that are home-bound or who could not travel to get items themselves

following the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene. Branford Fire Explorers alsoworked to deliver items. Captain Rick Hart of the Branford Fire Department

About 50 Percent of Branford Powered Up

    by Nicole Ball

It's felt like forever but Branford's Emergency Operation Center stated this

of customers were still without power; that's 9,141 to be exact. According to

CL&P's most up-to-date power restoration map, 40 other towns have a

higher percentage of power outages than Branford. Canterbury is still 100

    What's Open For Business?

    by Nicole Ball

It's been more than 80 hours for many of us without power. Some businesses

cranked up the generators and opened to the public right after tropical storm

Irene subsided. Pacileo's Pizza was one of the first to do this. The Parthenon

Diner was also running on a generator. Since then, power has been restored

to parts of East Main Street. Lynn's Deli, who first ran off a generator was up

and running with full "real" power as of yesterday. If you know of an open

place that weve missed, please add it to the comments section. Because

power restoration is happening as you read this, information is
