Killybegs has deep water all-weather harbour infrastructure along with hydraulic and mechanical services to play a pivotal role in the development of offshore energy.
The town of Killybegs has a proud maritime heritage. developed initially as a fishing port, it has since 1999, played an important role in facilitating offshore exploration and in particular the development of the Corrib field. It has also been the harbour of choice for wind farm developers, with turbines being delivered for wind farms throughout the north and west of Ireland. In a further development, Killybegs has become the port of call of many cruise ships who benefit from modern berthing and quayside facilities along with direct access to the Highlands of donegal. Killybegs in essence has evolved into a multifunctional port serving the fishing, energy and cruise sectors. Therefore the presence of this expertise, adaptability and flexibility ensures that Killybegs can meet any challenge. A “can do” attitude pervades.

Since exploration activity commenced off Ireland’s Western and Northwestern coasts over twelve years ago, Donegal airport has provided onshore airport facilities and personnel services to the air support contractors i.e., helicopter and fixed wing aircraft operators, appointed by the various exploration companies. Services provided include but are not limited to the following:

Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) is the first college in Ireland to have developed two programmes in Wind Energy Technology:
Higher Certificate in Wind Energy Technology
Minor Award in Wind Energy Technology
Both programmes have an element of practical and theoretical education and training. The courses will be delivered between the Killybegs campus and Letterkenny campus.LYIT has installed a 27m Turbine Training Tower on its Killybegs Campus.
It is the only such facility in Ireland. Wind Turbine Technicians are required to undergo Climbing and High Rescue training on a bi-annual basis. This tower will facilitate that training for both our students and industry. LYIT are also purchasing two 250kW Turbine Nacelles and Rotor Blades for two new training workshops. A rotor blade repair workshop and a turbine repair workshop totalling approximately 500m² is in place in Killybegs for use by our students and industry. These facilities are unique in Ireland. It is our vision to be the National Wind Academy (Ireland).
Having signed an education provider agreement with BZEE, the German Centre for Renewable Technology, LYIT is the only approved and accredited college to provide their Wind Energy Service Technician programmes in Ireland. BZEE’s programme has the endorsement and approval of most of the major European manufacturers that supply Ireland with wind Turbines for electricity generation. Furthermore it is the only education and training programme currently for wind service technicians with worldwide recognition.
The School of Tourism at LYIT, originally known as Tourism College Killybegs has over 40 years experience of producing talented and skilled graduates for the tourism industry both in Ireland and abroad. Courses on offer range from short certificate programmes to degree level offering qualifications in food production, leisure, heritage, hospitality and tourism.
