The Dublin International Piano Competition wasestablished in 1988. A triennial event, it wassponsored for the first three competitions by GPAGroup. In 1994, the sponsorship was taken overby Guardian Insurance and when AXA acquiredthe company in 1999 they also took over titlesponsorship which they sustained for 10 years.The Dublin International Piano Competition is nowsupported by private benefactors.

Since its foundation the Dublin Competition hasgrown in stature, and now ranks among the mostimportant piano competitions in the world. It offersa generous prize fund, but perhaps the mostimportant prize is the prestigious list ofengagements secured for the winner. Theseinclude début concerts in London and New Yorkas well as appearances at international festivalsand concertos with leading orchestras. Previouswinners have launched highly successfulinternational careers from this springboard.Chaired by John O’Conor, who is also the ArtisticDirector, and adjudicated by distinguishedmembers of the music profession from around theworld, the Competition attracts an enormousinternational entry.

The Dublin International Piano Competition is amember of the World Federation of InternationalMusic Competitions and a member of the AlinkArgerich Foundation. Previous winners currentlyengaged in successful careers include PhilippeCassard, France (1988); Pavel Nersessian, Russia(1991); Davide Franceschetti, Italy (1994); Max Levinson, USA (1997); Alexei Nabioulin,Russia (2000); Antti Siirala, Finland (2003); Romain Descharmes, France (2006); AlexejGorlatch, Ukraine (2009); Nikolay Khozyainov,Russia (2012) and 2015 winner, Nathalia Milstein(France) who became the first female winner ofthe Competition, joins this elite group who fly theflag for Ireland’s premier music competitionaround the world.

THE DuBlIn InTERnATIonAl PIAno CoMPETITIonwill take place in Dublin from 18 May to 29 May 2018

The Competition will be in four rounds.

The first two Preliminary Stages will be held in the Royal Dublin Society, from 18 to 24 May.

The Semi-Finals will be held on 26 & 27 May in the national Concert Hall, Dublin.

The Final – concerto performances with the RTÉ national Symphony orchestra of Ireland

conducted by Andrew Mogreliawill be held on 29 May.

The Semi-Finals & Final will be recorded by Radio Telefís Éireann.

Competition Rules

Twenty-four competitors will be admitted to the Second Round.

Twelve competitors will be admitted to the Semi-Finals.

Four competitors will be admitted to the Final.

The Jury reserves the right to alter these numbers at its discretion.

The Repertoire must have been written for solo piano and no alteration tothe piano may take place. Strict adherence to time limits must beobserved, and no piece may be played twice in the Competition.

up to five places will be reserved for Irish Competitors. Selection forthese places will be made by Competition which will be held inDecember 2017. Separate Application Forms for Irish Candidates will beavailable from the Competition office from September 2017.

1.The Competition is open toprofessional pianists of all nationalitieswho were born before 15 May 2000and after 15 May 1988.

2.Test pieces must be played frommemory, with the exception of thespecially commissioned compulsorypiece which is to be performed in thesemi-finals.

3.The order of the performances will bedetermined by ballot.

4.Competitors who are not available toperform when called upon to do so bythe Jury may be disqualified.

5.The decisions of the Jury will befinal and beyond appeal.

6.The Jury may award or withholdany prize as deemed fit.

7.The First Prize cannot be tied.

8.Rights to any Competitionperformance whether broadcast,televised, recorded or filmed belongto the Competition. No fee ispayable on account of theseperformances or any recordings,broadcasts or transmissions ofthem.

Applications may also be made online via thewebsite www.dipc.ie. There is an additionalnominal fee of €10.00 for this facility.

The following should be included with theApplication Form:

(a) Copy of Birth Certificate

(b) Reports or Certificates of Study. Theseshould include a letter from the candidate’smost recent teacher or mentor, specificallyrecommending them for this Competition.

(c) Curriculum Vitae to include documentationof performing experience, programmes ofrecent concerts/recitals and press cuttings.

(d) Two letters of recommendation frommusicians of standing (other than latestteacher or mentor), specifically recommendingthe candidate for this Competition.

(e) Three recent photographs (passportsize), lightly signed on the back. Photos may also be sent online.

(f) Entrance Fee (non-refundable) of €200 by Bank Draft payable to: Dublin International Piano Competition.

Payment may also be made using PayPalor by credit card: Visa, Mastercard andAmerican Express.

(g) Complete list of repertoire to beperformed in each round, with accurate timingsfor each piece. Competitors must also includeidentification numbers of each piece, e.g. Op.,K., Hob. etc. All Scarlatti sonatas must beidentified with Kirkpatrick and/or Longonumbers.

Please note: Competitors should note that thetime limits for each round must be strictlyadhered to and competitors who exceed thetime limits will have their performancesinterrupted. Repeats may be taken at theCompetitor’s discretion.

(h) An online unedited video recording of 20-30 minutes duration, including pieces from the submitted repertoire (no orchestralperformances) and certified by the candidate’slatest teacher, mentor or a musician ofstanding, verifying that the recording is by thecandidate and that no editing has taken place.The recording should be from a fixed cameraposition showing the full body, hands and legsof the candidate. This letter of verification mustinclude a telephone number and/or an emailaddress for confirmation, if necessary. Pleaseinclude a YouTube link if possible.

The Competition reserves the right to accept orreject any application.

Letters of acceptance or rejection will beposted no later than 19 January 2018.

Free accommodation in private houses will beoffered to all competitors for the duration oftheir participation in the Competition.

Eliminated competitors wishing to remain inDublin will be responsible for their ownaccommodation.

Practice pianos will be available in Dublinbefore and during the Competition.

In order that they can express theirindividuality in their approach to music,competitors in the DublinInternational Piano Competition mayperform programmes of their ownchoice. These programmes shoulddemonstrate an understanding ofprogramme building, an ability to playin a variety of musical styles and mostimportantly to show the depth of theirown musicianship, rather than meretechnical brilliance. The repertoire musthave been written for solo piano andno alteration to the piano may takeplace.

Time limits must be strictly adheredto and no piece may be performedmore than once.

In the Semi-Finals all competitors mustselect one of the four speciallycommissioned pieces by RTÉ lyric fm(duration of 5 minutes) by Irishcomposers: Ann Cleare, DeirdreGribbin, Brian Irvine and Conorlinehan.

This piece may be performed with a score and the music will besent to accepted candidates inFebruary 2018.
