Saturday 17th August

10:00 - 12:00 CHILDREN’S INDOOR NATURE ART A fun workshop using pressed and dried flowers, muslin and leather to make bookmarks that last. For 6 to 12-year-olds. Leader: Cara Tremayne

Venue: Forest & Flock, New Street, Bantry.

10:00 - 16:30 LICHEN CRAFTS Two workshops for adults: Lichen Lampshades (10:00-12:00) and Dyeing with Lichens (14:00-16:30). Organiser: Two Green Shoots

Venue: The Garden of Reimagination, Glengarriff.

14:00 - 15:00 ELLEN HUTCHINS: THE BOOK AND THE TRAIL Hear Madeline Hutchins talk about her recently published book on Ellen and listen to the Heritage Trail Audio Guide. Option to visit Garryvurcha graveyard afterwards.

Venue: Bantry Bookshop, William Street, Bantry.

Sunday 18th August

13:00 - 16:00 WHIDDY ISLAND - SEAWEED EVENT An exciting chance to discover the seaweeds along Whiddy Island’s shore with Dr Susan Steele (SFPA) and try identify & preserve seaweed specimens 1800s style.

Ferries leave Bantry’s Railway Pier at 1pm,

returning at 4:15pm.

Cost: €6.50 return. No dogs please.

Monday 19th August

14:00 - 16:00 LICHEN MICRO-TRAIL - DROP-IN SESSIONThe Ellen Hutchins team will be on hand with leaflets and hand lenses to help families find a fascinating array of different coloured and shaped lichens on the shore.

Venue: Snave Beach, Ballylickey. No dogs please.

16:00 - 17:00 NATURE ART DEMONSTRATIONA chance to get up close, watch and talk with artist Sue van Coppenhagen as she paints one of her beautiful nature art pictures, inspired by the wonderful County Cork.

Venue: Mannings Emporium, Ballylickey

Tuesday 20th August

10:00 - 12:00 WILDLIFE KAYAK TOURKayak around Adrigole Harbour with local marine expert, Niall McAllister (Wild Atlantic Wildlife). See seals, seaweeds and other marine life.

Venue: West Cork Sailing and Powerboating Centre, The Pier, Adrigole.

Cost: €15 per person.

14:00 - 17:00 SEAWEED TASTING & FORAGING

Explore the shore and find out which seaweeds are edible with aquatic biologist Frances Gallagher. Followed by a cooking demonstration & tasting session.

A range of activities including leaf painting & printing, flower pounding, flower bookmarks, woven willow mobiles and more. Suitable for 5 to 12-year-olds. Leaders: Cara Tremayne, Etaoin Melville, Ciara Strange & Sue van Coppenhagen

BOTANICAL ART DEMONSTRATION

Award-winning botanical artist, Shevaun Doherty, will be demonstrating her exquisite art skills live and talking about botanical art.

Thursday 22nd August 10:00 - 11:30 BANTRY BAY - BOAT TRIP & MARITIME HISTORY

An exclusive tour of inner Bantry Bay: join a small flotilla of motorboats and hear about the maritime history of the bay from local guide, Paul O’Donoghue.

12:00 - 15:00 GUIDED NATURE WALK ON WHIDDY ISLANDLearn about Whiddy Island’s wildflowers and follow in the footsteps of Ireland’s first female botanist 200 years ago. 3km loop walk, no dogs permitted. Leader: Clare Heardman (NPWS).

Ferries leave Bantry at 11:30am, returning at 15:45pm. Cost: €6.50 return.

Friday 23rd August

10:00 - 12:00 PLANT HUNTING IN BALLYLICKEY

Three parallel hunts to find Ellen’s garden plants, wildflowers and cryptogams around her former home in the company of experts. Join Howard Fox (National Botanic Gardens/OPW); Maria Cullen (Irish geomycologist); Astrid Wingler (Professor of Plant Biology/UCC); and Clare Heardman (NPWS).

12:00 - 14:00 SEAWEED TASTING EXPERIENCE

Wild Atlantic Seaweed Discovery & Tasting Experience with WASi Seaweeds, who will set up their stall at Mannings Emporium (Ballylickey) with free seaweed tasting samples.

LIVING HISTORY: LETTER WRITING 1809

Learn the letter writing practices of 1809, write with a quill pen and hear about Ellen’s correspondence; with Carrie O’Flynn (re-enactor) and Madeline Hutchins (researcher).

Venue: Seaview House, Ballylickey. Tea and scones can be ordered for 4pm.

Explore the wonderful world of woodland lichens with Paul Whelan (author Lichens of Ireland). Hand lenses will be available for participants to see lichens up close.

PUTTING PEN TO PAPERAn exhibition on letter writing materials and the postal system in the early-1800s. Learn about quill pens, oak gall ink, seals and stamps.

DRAWINGS AND LETTERS: sit and look through folders of Ellen’s drawings, specimens and extracts of her letters.

Open daily 9:30-17:30, except Sunday & Monday.
