Energy Sector in Iran

The Iranian Petroleum & Energy Club aims to promote efficiency and sustainable growth in Iranian energy sector by providing demand led policy advice based on professional experience and frontier research. As a professional and not-for-profit association, we facilitate knowledge transfer to hundreds of energy executives and young entrepreneurs which helps them better understand the financial and management issues that shape the current energy environment in Iran. In collaboration with our network of professional executives, leading academics and field experts, we provide impartial and evidence-based policy recommendations for decision-makers in the energy sector; recommendations which have been successful in addressing some of the most entrenched challenges of Iranian energy sector.

The term “energy” in Iran has evolved to involve range of activities from production to consumption and trading of energy and electricity. Possessing world’s largest reserves of natural gas and ranking fourth in oil reserves, Iran is considered to be an energy superpower, and is one of the leading members of OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) and the Organization of Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).Iran’s yearly oil revenues amounts to $47 billion, which accounts for about 50% of state revenues. Iran is also among the biggest subsidizer of energy in the world and natural gas and oil consumption account for about half of Iran’s domestic energy consumption. Therefore, increasing energy consumption efficiency by utilizing new technologies, is a top priority. Moreover, with the economy’s heavy dependence on oil and gas revenues, Iran continues to explore for new sources of natural gas and oil. Recently these activities have been focused on exploration of the South Pars offshore natural gas fields in the Persian Gulf.

Introducing the Iran Petroleum Contracts(IPC): Considering the increasing competition between different regional oil producers has led Iran to reconsider the structure of its oil and gas contracts. This revised and new model of contract will be presented.IPC As the world oil market and prices has been facing with dramatic changes since creation of the Buy- Back model in Iran and as the existence of the new regional competitor offering more attractive contractual models to international investors, and considering the positive developments happening in the country’s economical and political positions worldwide, reviewing and restructuring the country’s contractual model seems to be a firm necessity. For the first time, we will discuss about the proposed model which submitted to government which will compose that with the old Buy-Back contracts in different aspects.

Panel Discussions:The panel constitutes of government officials and industry leaders who will in depth discuss topics from the conference. Participants are free to select the panels they are interested to take part in, before the Congress begins.

According to FAO, Iran has been a top five producer of the following agricultural products in the world in 2012: apricots, cherries, sour cherries, cucumbers and gherkins, dates, eggplants, figs, pistachios, quinces, walnuts, and watermelonsIran is the second largest economy in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region after Saudi Arabia, with an estimated Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of US$D 406.3 billion in 2014. It also has the second largest population of the region after Egypt, with an estimated 80.8 million people as of individuals in July 2014. Iran’s economy is characterized by a large hydrocarbon sector, small scale agriculture and services sectors, and a noticeable state presence in manufacturing and financial services. Iran ranks second in the world in natural gas reserves and fourth in proven crude oil reserves. Aggregate GDP and government revenues still depend to a large extent on oil revenues and are therefore intrinsically volatile.Iran hosts Asia’s 4th-largest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is a founding member of the UN, ECO, NAM, OIC and OPEC.
