NEW YORK-Morris Levyhas announced the appoint-ment of Phil Picone as Direc-tor of Sales for Roulette Rec-ords and all its subsidiarylabels.

Picone is a youthful veteranwho has had vast experiencein different facets of the rec-ord business. He started outin retail, then joined Mercuryas a sales representative in1956. Eventually, he was pro-moted to the post of EasternSales Representative. He thenwent to Time Records as Na-tional Sales Manager in 1960,and was instrumental in thesuccess of Time's sound line.When Mainstream was formed,Picone took over the post asDirector of Sales and Promo-tion for both Mainstream andTime.

Picone will report directlyto Levy and Hugo & Luigi, whofeel that Picone will be a tre-mendous asset in both salesand the creative productplanned for the future. Piconewill go right to work on Rou-lette and Tico's new releases,concentrating heavily on thenew Pearl Bailey album "For

2 - Way English Traffic CurtailedLONDON - Two-way traffic

between the states and Englandfor musicians has been curtailedfor a bit, according to an agree-ment reached last week betweenthe British Musicians Unionand the American Federationof Musicians.

Existing contracts will not beaffected, however.

The AF of M requested thetemporary ban because they feelthat English groups of late(through their agents) havetaken advantage of the book-ings in the states by exceedingthe performing dates allowedthem on their union permits.

The announcement was madeby Harry Francis, assistant sec-retary of the British union, whoreported that the AF of M hadmade the request. He stated thatif the ban is lifted within a fewdays it will have little effect onthe exchange of talent, but as alonger ban will create financialhardship among the more pop-ular groups.

He also felt record saleswould be affected.

`Until Clearer Understanding'He said that the ban will re-

main in force until a "clearerunderstanding of the exchangeagreement" could be reachedwith the promoters.

TV from RecordNEW YORK- A new system

whereby television pictures plusmusic and voice can be playedby record has been perfectedby Westinghouse.

The corporation unveiled thenew process, called "Phonovid,"last week. Dr. William E.Shoupp, vice president for re-search at Westinghouse, saidthat up to 400 still picturesand 40 minutes of sound canbe recorded on two sides of a12 -inch record that the com-pany has tagged a "videodisc."

Right now the record -TVcombine is priced at $10,000.

Describing the operation ofthe new process, Dr. Shouppstressed, "The record is notjust an audio recording thattriggers pictures from a slideprojector. Both the audio sig-nal and the video signal arepresent in the grooves of therecord and both are pickedup by the phonograph needle."

The corporation foreseesPhonovid as a new audio-visualsystem for classroom instruc-tion, industrial and militarytraining, vocational educationand sales presentations.

The record, played on an ordi-nary turntable could be"shown," Dr. Shoupp mentioned,on any number of televisionreceivers in a classroom orthroughout an entire building.

In time, of course, althoughDr. Shoupp made no specula-tion, "Phonovid" would seem alikely prospect for the consumermarket on a wider scale. Whenthe price comes down therewould seem to be no stoppingthe possibilities of the processfor recording.

Lincoln Lincoln Bo Bincolnstands for Lincoln Chase whopenned "The Name Game" forShirley Ellis to sing on theCongress label and therebycarry the twosome (or three-some) to their second tremen-dous joint single success (thefirst, of course, was Congress'"Nitty Gritty").

Lincoln and Shirley '*-erejust about to join the pickClark Caravan for four Weeksof playing the name gamethroughout the mid -west whenRecord World spoke to themlast week. Both were excitedover the success of "The NameGame" and its follow-up "TheClap Pat Song" and were equal-ly enthusiastic about their nextsingle, which they refused todiscuss at any length. Shirleywould only say, "If you thinkyou were scratching your headover the last two . . ."

Chase said he was particu-larly pleased over the currentclicks far a couple of diversereasons. The first is that hefeels he is establishing his"new sound, my new beat" thatfirst got the public tapping itsfeet with "Nitty Gritty." Heexplained that the beat de-pended upon dividing eachmeasure of music into eighthsand then accentuating certaineighths in each successive bar.

Chase has been using hisbeat as "the solidifying factor"for each of Shirley's songs andwill continue to do so. He willalso continue to use the ideaof games for a while, becausehe feels the fun of playing agame attracts kids and the"nostalgia" connected withchildren's pastimes attractsadults.

Shirley certainly won't object."Lincoln has made my life soeasy," she says. "I hardly haveto work at all when I get infront of an audience. The audi-ence participation is built intothe songs and people love tosing them." (Lincoln and Shir-ley spend a lot of time clappatting each other on the back

Another reason Chase ishappy over the "Name Game"click is due to a reward thatcame totally unexpected. Itseems that various Boards ofEducation across the countryhave contacted him to say that,in classes where retarded chil-dren are taught, the "NameGame" has been used withgreat success to teach childrento follow directions-a normal-ly difficult process.

Chase suspects that the beathas a hypnotic effect of somesort under which the childrencan be guided more easily. Heplans to do some research onthe subject shortly in conjunc-tion with education organiza-tions.

A third reason Chase ispleased with current activityis that it means his name isbecoming more important, hiscredits are growing, his bankaccount is expanding and hecan now move on to workingwith new personalities underhis recently formed L. Chase,Inc. banner. Although Chaseplans to continue appearingwith Shirley and strengthen hisbilling in the act, he said thatShirley is sufficiently estab-lished so that he doesn't needto devote himself to her fulltime.

For a couple of years he'sbeen keeping his eye on someperformers in whom he sees agreat deal of potential and heexpects to sign them to exclu-sive L. Chase, Inc. contractssoon at which time he will be-gin building them from theground up as he did with Shir-ley over the past five years.

Chase also plans to continuehis association with Congressand Al Gallico's publishinghouse because he's been verypleased with the way thingshave worked out for all con-cerned. "The 'Name Game' sin-gle may have fallen off thecharts," he said, "but it's stillselling well and will probablydo so for a long time since itis like a game."

President of Web IV Publish-ing Corporation, announced theappointment of Julie Rifkindas General Manager of BangRecords, a subsidiary of thepublishing concern.

The new label, with offices at1650 Broadway, will record alltypes of music. Their first re-lease, out this week, is "Shakeand Jerk," by Billy Lamont.

Rifkind, an experienced rec-ord man, was an independentproducer of TV specials beforehis appointment as head ofBang. He formerly was withMGM -Verve for five years asNational Promotion Manager.Rifkind also ran their R&B.

following Barbra Streisand'shour-long CBS television net-work special, "My Name isBarbra," record retailersthroughout the country werebesieged with requests esti-mated at over 250,000 for arecording of the show.

The 23 -year -old vocalist'sfifth Columbia LP, "My Nameis Barbra," which includesfeatured songs from the pro-duction, is being rushed to thestores this week.

Umbrellas Aren't So BadHOLLYWOOD-Consider the particular problem of the little

station in an outlying area that is sitting under the umbrella ofa large city or metropolis.

In most cases these stations have a very difficult time becausethe big stations in the big cities have the money to buy the talentto make them sound better. Usually their signals are all -encom-passing, so when ratings are taken they are for the metropolitanarea. Since the little station's signal frequently reaches only theoutlying parts of the city in which he is located, his chance forshowing up on the metropolitan survey is slight.

With only a small chance for important ratings and with nomoney to buy big talent, the plight of the littlestation seems hopeless. But such is not alwaysthe case. Several stations actually have takenadvantage of their size, and have gone after theratings supposedly owned by the metropolitanstations. The fact is, most large stations areencumbered with large staffs, policies and pol-itics. That often makes them move more slowlyon important issues, and occasionally it makesthem a little less sincere or friendly with theiraudiences.

If the little station \ plays very carefully (andhonestly) to the local audience it knows it reaches, and offersthem a simply designed format that is not cluttered up with allkinds of gimmicks, he can acquire a loyal audience that can meanbig ratings for him in his own city. He can successfully competewith the big station, and win. He can also do very well with thelocal sponsors, the downtown merchants who are never called onby the big stations and who could not afford their rates if theywere.

As an example, KLIV in San Jose boosted its ratings from athree to a 17 simply by being well ahead of the San Franciscostations with their records. KWIZ is making strong strides inSanta Ana by claiming the world's record for playing re -boundsounds. The response has been so good for them they've ordereda rating taken (which will not include Los Angeles).

It's not easy to make money under an umbrella, but with alittle creativity and optimism it is possible.

It sure is pleasant whensome of your friends make itbig but still remain nice peo-ple. A good example is BobThompson, public relations di-rector for SESAC and ROSAorganizational public relationsconsultant (whatever all thatmeans) ; he has to be suc-cessful with those titles, but hehasn't changed a bit since hewas doing record promotion onthe West Coast three years ago.

While he was in town wecaught the Greenwood CountySingers doing a very excitingsession for Kapp. They won'tlet me tell you the title of therecord they cut, but it's goingto be a beauty.

More about the Byrds('cause they're comin' on).They'll appear on "Hullabaloo"for its final show of the sea-son, and naturally they'll do"Mr. Tambourine Man." Don'tmiss them; they're somethingto see . . . Guess who's at the

Ash Grove in Los Angeles?Only the oldest living bluessinger in the world, Son House,that's who. Though he dis-appeared from the musicalworld for a couple of years,he's back now, and he's draw-ing big crowds. Son's beensinging longer than most ofus have been alive . . . Thisone's not been around too long,but he's mighty popular, Rob-ert Goulet, and he'll be pleas-ing them at the CocoanutGrove until the 17th.

A couple more of our localfavorites are cutting a wideswath: Sonny & Cher will befeatured in the June 1 issueof Look Magazine, in a 7 -pagecolor article dealing with thepop record industry . . . John-ny Rivers' new Imperial single,"The Seventh Son" should bein your hands at any moment. . . To put the final touch onmy "nice people" story, GlennCampbell is receiving some ofthe acclaim his talent deserves.

Hanna - BarberaReleases May 10

HOLLYWOOD-Hanna- Bar-bera Records has targeted May10 as the date for its premiererelease of LPs and singles, VPand General Manager Don Bo-hanan announced.

Initial HBR plans call forthe release of 11 singles andsix long play albums, all ofwhich will feature the world-famous Hanna -Barbera cartooncharacters.

The six LP releases aretitled: "Monster Shindig,""Flintstones Flip Fables,""Huckleberry Hound Tells Stor-ies of Uncle Remus," "YogiBear And Boo Boo," "MagillaGorilla Tells Ogee The StoryOf Alice In Wonderland" and"Pixie & Dixie With Mr. JinksTells The Story of Cinderella."

The presold characters andthe entire production facilitiesof the Hanna -Barbera studioshave been integrated to providedistributors with a schedule ofunique record promotions.Some of the promo and mer-chandising plans are as fol-lows:

1) Telephone calls from art-ists (Huckeberry Hound, FredFlintstone, Yogi Bear, etc.) tokey radio stations, djs andtheir children, record colum-nists, newspaper editors, etc.

NEW YORK - If ColePorter's song has ended, itseems that new melodies lingeron.

Dr. Albert Sirmay, chief edi-tor of Chappell and Co., Por-ter's publishing affiliation, re-ported last week that 100 un-published Porter tunes havebeen found in his WaldorfTowers apartment since thecomposer's death last Oct.

The stockpile of songs, writ-ten for the most part forshows or musicals over theyears from 1924-55, shouldprovide enough material, Sir-may surmised, for a couple ofBroadway shows, although noplans have been made as yet."I would call the material arich musical heritage," Sirmaywent on. "There are dozens ofexcellent songs."

Sirmay refused to estimatethe value of the songs and in-deed, what with the royaltiesthat could accrue, the tunesmay be invaluable. Currentlythe Porter estate receivesabout $100,000 annually inroyalties.

The discovery of the Portersongs is reminiscent of the dis-covery a couple of years agoof a Jerome Kern cache thatincluded songs enough for atleast one full Broadway score.It was announced at that timethat lyricist Dorothy Fieldswas going to provide lyrics fora show. Nothing has happenedsince, however.

I see, you've gone about yourdaily stateside duties over thepast week, absolutely convincedthat on opening this edition ofRecord World you wouldn't haveto waste valuable time trying todecipher the complexities thatconfront you at this momentevery week. Well, you're in fora shock: it's me again, and . . .

yes, I DID survive that motorrally I told you about "the lasttime" (the Rolling Stones wouldapprove of my phraseology).

In fact, although I haven'tbeen notified of the final results,I can tell you that out of 42entries, only 10 of the cars fin -

Alan Freeman ished, and only two cars man-aged to negotiate the first intricate section as layed down by therules. This could only have been achieved through impeccablenavigation. I humbly add that my role in the rally was that of. . . navigator!

Mind you, I've always been of the opinion that the Britishwere ones for "fair play," but I must say that I thought it justa bit too much, when on dashing to read a sign post in thecourse of my navigational capacity, I found that it had eithergone on vacation for the week -end, had a date for the nightwith some other sign post or was perhaps driving another carin the rally itself. 'However, it wasn't there, and I'm of theopinion that a signpost minus the sign is somewhat comparableto Haydn's "Unfinished Symphony!"

Accolades for TonyNow, may I perhaps be the first to tell you that it's a case of

unfinished excitement here in Great Britain over Tony Bennett'srecent short concert tour in Manchester and London. Everyconcert was a sellout, and to give you some idea, even I (Mr.Navigation of 1965) had the greatest difficulty in getting onetiny seat. I've always thought that Frank Sinatra was the great-est recipient of applause from a splendid British audience, butI think even Frank would have been warmed by the tumul-tuous cheering that greeted Tony every time he threatened tostop for that vital facet to life called breath!

I'll tell you what, though, you'd better hold on to him whenhe gets back, because I've heard a nasty rumor that next timeTony comes over here, he's gonna be kidnapped, kept here andyou'll never see him again!

Meets KHJersI almost forgot to tell you of my meeting here with Mike

Rollins and Sam Riddle of KHJ-TV in Hollywood. They cameover to film people like the Rolling Stones, the Cannon Brothers,Marianne Faithful, Sandi Shaw, Adam Faith, the Zombies, Her-man's Hermits, the Kinks, Manfred Mann and Georgie Fame.I believe the show goes on May 14.

Sam told me he was off to film some special material inHawaii for his "9th Street West" and "Hollywood a Go Go"shows, and you'll be able to see it all sometime in July on KHJ.

Well, The Beatles are still No. 1 . . . Roger Miller's at No. 2with "King of the Road" . . . The Animals have gone to No. 5with "Bring It On Home to Me" . . . The Seekers have goneto No. 12 with "A World of Our Own" . . . Francoise Hardy getsnear that Top 20 with "All Over the World," and I wouldn't beat all surprised if your Shirley Ellis is on the way to a bigBritish smash with "The Clapping Song."

Well, I must go, I guess. Where you ask? How should I know?Incidentally, have you got any old signposts you don't want?

Wayne, Mindbenders Are Unique:Have Label's 1st No. 1 US Hit

NEW YORK-Wayne Fon-tana and the Mindbenders brokeit up in the states recently,although for a while it didn'tlook as if they were going toget out of Liverpool.

"The American Embassy inLiverpool didn't think we were`unique' enough," Wayne said,referring to a problem occas-ionally faced by the abundanceof British acts currently anx-ious to get into the U.S. Whatturned the trick? "A very nicelady at the Embassy. She wasin charge and liked us," the in-gratiating Wayne said with awink. "We got our visa."

So that's how it's done!And, actually, the boys do

have at least one unique accom-plishment of no mean importon the record industry scene:they have provided Fontana'sfirst No. 1 record in America,"The Game of Love," also thename of their LP.

The Manchester -raised boys'American trip was "mainly pro-motional," it was learned. "Ouragent, Danny Betesh, is alsohere negotiating for a motionpicture for us in which we'llnot only sing but act."

The ShutterbugsWayne and his 'benders had

also become shutterbugs uponarrival in America, causingMercury -Fontana Records offi-cials some consternation. Soonafter they had arrived, the boysleft their hotel suite for anostensibly brief browsing visitto a nearby camera shop andwere several hours getting back.

The diskery folk were in anuproar and were just about toring up the bobbies when thegroup showed, with several newcameras.

"Look," said one of the'benders to the Record Worldinterviewer. "Wayne's an expertat space photography."

What's that, was the naturalreply?

One of the lads grabbed upan example of Wayne's polaroidhandiwork and proffered it. Thephoto, if that's what it was,was all white. "We have themin black, too," said the 'bender,who was also a bit of a 'breaker.

had freddied his way through apile of exposed film to a cor-ner, re -loading his camera forsome more observations of spacewhich in consistency more thanmade up for what they lackedin variety.

And the cluster of teen-agegirls outside the group's roomswas more than thrilled to haveblack and whites of their idols.("I got Wayne! No it's Eric!Or is it Ric?" "I got Bob!"Etc.)

They were extremely amiablelads, although they did do aslight bit of grousing becausethe "Shindig" TVer had justshown a Fontana-Mindbendersperformance they felt had dated,since it had been taped manymonths before.

Wayne Fontana and theMindbenders will be back inthe states in July to take morepictures - and, they hope, tomake one, in which they'll domore than take up space.

Smoothly emceed by RecordWorld's Ed Hamilton and star-ring Hank Snow, Flatt andScruggs, Johnny Wright, KittyWells, Ruby Wright, Bill Phil-lips, Dave Dudley, Dick Curlessand Juanita Rose, the show fea-tured the fetching brand ofoften sentimental, often hard-bitten and cynical country mu-sic that is an integral expres-sion of American moods.

The performers all sang andpranced through their stints(usually about four or five newand old tunes) with easy humorand performed as if the theaterwas jampacked - which musthave been difficult for perform-ers who are used to havingthings just that way as a mat-ter of course.

A better planned promotioncampaign might have made thedifference between low grossesand more copious ones, and thatidea should probably be keptin mind for future Paramountshowcasings.

of 10 Starday country albumswill be offered to members ofthe Capitol Record Club duringMay, pursuant to a new agree-ment entered into between Star-day and the Capitol RecordClub.

Ed Nash and Glenn Caven-der of Capitol Record Club re-ported "phenomenal" interest incountry music, and when DonPierce visited in Los Angelesenroute to Tokyo, he made ar-rangements to make the Stardaycatalog available to the CapitolClub. First issues selected byCapitol from the Starday cata-log are albums by Cowboy Co-pas, George Jones, Roger Miller,Johnny Bond, the Willis Broth-ers and various combination al-bums, including several doublepocket sets in the Country Mu-sic Hall of Fame series.

Valentyne delivered a baby May6 in the front seat of a carmaking its way toward St.Claire's Hospital. The incidentoccurred when the young singerwas walking his wife aroundthe block for her morning exer-cise.

Suddenly she turned to Rudyand said, "Now!" Valentynewaved frantically for a taxi, apolice car, or any other vehiclethat would stop. Finally, a goodsamaritan in a truck stoppedand offered help. "If it wasn'ta delivery truck, it is now,"Valentyne said later.

Valentyne's wife, Mary, wasplaced on the front seat andthe driver started towards thehospital. But 'Mr. Stork wasn'twaiting for formalities. WithRudy in the role of Dr. Valen-tyne, a baby girl, Kelly Michelle,weighing five pounds and fourounces, arrived on the singer'slap. Minutes later they arrivedat St. Claire's Hospital, wherean intern came out and wrappedthings up. Mother, child andfather are doing well.

HOLLYWOOD-Capitol Rec-ords, Inc. (CRI) established itsown record company in MexicoCity on May 1 as the pivotalstep in an international mar-keting plan designed to in-crease the label's penetrationin all Latin Countries.

Announcement of this majorcorporate development wasmade by Alan W. Livingston,CRI President, who stated thatthe new firm will bear thename Discos Capital De Mex-ico, S.A. Capitol will own thecompany jointly with one ofMexico's leading industrialist,Emilio Azcarraga, head of Mex-ican TV (Telesistema Mexi-cano, S.A.)

In charge of the operationfor Capitol is Lloyd W. Dunn,Vice -President, Capitol Rec-ords, Inc., who in recentmonths has conducted an in-tensive study of Latin Amer-ican record markets. Andre Mi-d'ani, for nine years a topexecutive of Odeon in Brazil,has been named General Man-ager of Discos Capitol De Mex-ico. Organizationally, DiscosCapitol De Mexico is the Mex-ican counterpart of CapitolRecords of Canada (CRC), ofwhich Dunn is President.

According to Dunn, the newfirm will' market its first prod-ucts on July 1. The firm willhave exclusive sales and dis-tribution rights to the Capitol,Tower and Angel labels, aswell as for recordings origin-ating with Electric & MusicalIndustries, Ltd. (EMI), of Eng-land and its world wide sub-sidiary companies.

Dunn stated that, while thefirm has no plans to build itsown factories, it is now in theprocess of constructing record-ing studios and executive officesin Mexico City. Design workfor the new installations hasbeen undertaken by EdwardUecke, Capitol's Director of De-velopment Engineering, andKent Fursee, Manager of Elec-tronic Maintenance.
