Dear Colleague,

When you think of the Middle East, you think “a nucleus for architectural creativity;” “an exciting platform for the most original visions to become a reality.”

Yet whilst architectural firms continue to grow in the region to cater to the Middle East’s construction boom, architects face key challenges such as:

Licensing issues and authority approvals Finding the right staff and local expertise Working in harmony with clients to deliver fast-tracked designs without diluting design quality or impeding cash flow

So where can you find the pioneers in Middle Eastern architecture in one location to debate these hot-topics and to showcase their most ground-breaking design innovations? The answer: at the ARCHITECTS & DESIGN FORUM MIDDLE EAST.

From 30-31 March 2015, we’ll be uniting the leading designers, architects, and developers who are transforming Middle Eastern architecture.

There is no better place for you to: Pose your most hard-hitting questions to our speakers to discover how your peers are overcoming the obstacles which are keeping the industry awake See exclusive developments of landmark Middle Eastern projects to understand the design trends which will shape the region and influence your future designs Enjoy two afternoons filled with architectural inspiration and innovation whilst networking amongst pioneering design, developer, and technology gurus

Plus! There will be several opportunities to WIN BIG during our special prize giveaways during the forum! Keep an eye out for further updates which will be announced in the lead-up to the event.

But for now, I look forward to meeting you in March in Dubai.

Best regards, Lara Makanjuola

13:00 Chairperson’s Welcome Note Rasha Alkhatib, Assistant Manager Architecture, DUBAI PROPERTIES; Committee Member, RIBA GULF CHAPTER

THE UAE MASTER PLAN: DEVELOPING ARCHITECTURE WHICH RESONATES THROUGH THE AGES

13:05 What guidelines and ideas are determining the UAE Master Plan? How will the UAE create a uniformed language within each emirate? Do stringent municipality licensing policies need to be revised in order to cater to the UAE’s construction boom? Is there a need for more clarification on sustainable standards as per municipality regulations? How can you convince your client to embrace new technology which may have high upfront costs but can ultimately improve a building’s energy usage and “green” certification? What are the urban design strategies to promote less reliance on automobiles? Sherif Anis, AIA MENA Region Zone Director Gulf Related; AIA International Board Farid Esmaeil, Founding Partner, X-ARCHITECTS Ralf Steinhauer, Project Director, RSP Steven Velegrinis, Director of Urban Design, PERKINS+WILL Ivar Krasinski, Design Director, L+B DESIGN GROUP

13:50 The city as a hyper-complex problem: Computational design and ecological urbanism in the UAE Understanding that cities are immensely complex metabolic systems and those systems are embedded in their ecological setting Recognising how we should see the city as an opportunity to design synthetic ecologies that structure and serve urban development Given the complexity of the problem, how do we achieve the above? How should master planning make use of computational design? Using a number of case studies in the UAE and the region, we will try to outline how we can achieve more holistic sustainable solutions Steven Velegrinis, Director of Urban Design, PERKINS+WILL

14:10 Speed Networking Break & Refreshments Our popular ice-breaking session will give you the opportunity to interact with a maximum number of attendees within a fixed period of time. When the bell rings, this means it’s time to move on to your next networking match, so ensure you have plenty of business cards at the ready!

The published programme is correct at time of printing. However, given the seniority of our speakers and the nature of their roles, speakers may

subsequently substitute or remove themselves from the programme. This is always regrettable, and we will always try to replace the speaker with a speaker with equivalent insight. For the most up-to-date programme,

please visit the event website.

THE PROJECT DELIVERY CHALLENGE: OVERCOMING THE OBSTACLES WHICH CAN IMPEDE YOUR PROJECT GOALS

15:10 Building Up: Creating skyscrapers within tight deadlines whilst ensuring a vision of grandeur is accomplished Establishing ways to innovate the typical tower format whilst breathing new life into a region Debating the human scale versus high rise architecture in urban design and the extent to which this impacts citizens’ unification with a region and its architecture Creating designs which combine opulence and practicality to ensure a design can be constructed within the time frames set by clients Ralf Steinhauer, Project Director, RSP

15:30 How can architects overcome time, cost, and approval obstacles? What regulations need to be put in place to protect architects in the GCC from tender stage to project payment and beyond? Why are architects’ fees not increasing whilst project costs continue to inflate? Can fast-tracked projects with moving goalposts realistically still fulfil the initial design brief with maximum design and building quality? Is BIM the way forward for preventing structural and MEP clashes, streamlining the design process, and reducing onsite costs? THE ARCHITECTURAL LOCALISATION: ENSURING MIDDLE EASTERN ARCHITECTURE IS BOTH ICONIC

AND CULTURALLY RELEVANT

13:05 Are Middle Eastern countries losing their localised identity? Do we need more fresh design ideas from international architects or should we be focused on sourcing staff from within the region? Are Middle Eastern countries too reliant on design ideas from international countries which do not face the same environmental and supplier challenges? How can the Middle East find the right, local expertise to ensure individual cultural identities are not lost? What can authorities do to support boutique architecture firms who are committed to maintaining cultural integrity in regional architecture? Do we need to establish more localised research and development facilities to ensure design and building technology are specific to the region? The Material Shift: Which materials are on the rise and which are on the decline in Middle Eastern architecture?
