PROGNOSIS VoIP Monitor is a purpose-built solution for monitoring voice quality in Avaya IP telephony environments.

Performance monitoring software for business-critical systems

The role of PROGNOSIS

PROGNOSIS monitors IP telephony voice quality, availability and performance. Deep drill-down views provide the information you need to investigate problems so you can resolve issues before they impact your business or customers.

Real insight – in real time

PROGNOSIS VoIP Monitor’s easy-to-use displays are supported in Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Safari browsers. The displays provide choices of ‘at-a-glance’ and in-depth information about your Avaya IP telephony environment, including:

> Real time and historical voice quality

> PBX configuration and status

> Metrics to measure service-level attainment

> IP telephony availability and performance

> Device and gateway status

> Phone registration

> Call attempts and completions

Empower staff

As PROGNOSIS has been monitoring IP telephony for over ten years, the most common problems are already identified. When any components breach defined operating conditions, support staff are notified by on-screen, email and SNMP alerts.

There is no need to set up the conditions that trigger alerts, they’re all provided out of the box. This empowers staff to prioritize and assign tasks, streamlining investigation and reducing mean time to repair.

Receive alerts

PROGNOSIS ensures that you know when things change so that you can manage your environment proactively, and anticipate and prevent problems.

You’ll receive PBX alarm notifications, changes in board, device and media gateway status, SAT connectivity and voice quality exceptions. You’ll also be alerted if there are changes in phone registrations or if the performance or availability of network regions, port networks, processors, route patterns and trunk groups change.

Measure voice quality

To help establish voice quality trends, reports are generated every day – providing voice quality information for the previous day and preceding seven days. Reports remain online for up to 12 months so you can compare voice quality with previous periods.

Optimize resources

PROGNOSIS monitors the performance and availability of media gateways, media servers, IP network regions, port networks, route patterns and trunk groups. Deep drill-down information allows you to view an individual device’s usage in real time and over the previous 30 days.

In this way you can identify usage patterns of individual boards and optimize, reduce or increase capacity.

Manage maintenance

PROGNOSIS provides maintenance worksheets that display details of components such as boards’ vintage and devices’ firmware versions. This helps you plan upgrades, reconfigurations, repairs, and schedule maintenance.

What does PROGNOSIS monitor?PROGNOSIS provides real-time monitoring of voice quality, device status, performance, and fault notification.

Through easy to understand displays, PROGNOSIS gives you a consolidated view of your entire IP telephony environment.

The following displays show how you can instantly view key infor-mation about telephony devices and voice quality.

Avaya PBX overview

This display provides a summary of PBX availability and alerts, attached device status, IP voice quality and network hops. To drill down into more detail, simply click the hyperlinks.

Device details

For all PBX attached devices, PROGNOSIS provides detailed screens of status, performance and configuration information. These displays update in real time, enabling rapid troubleshooting and visual confirmation of any system changes.

Maintenance worksheets

PROGNOSIS provides worksheets to assist in performing administrative maintenance and auditing tasks. These worksheets automatically populate and sort data from your environment as needed for a range of maintenance tasks, such as upgrading firmware of phones and boards, and identifying devices taken down for maintenance.

PBX reports

PROGNOSIS downloads reports from the PBX and displays them in both tabular and graphical formats. These displays allow you to instantly see both the detail and the trends for key telephony measurements such as call completions, error seconds and processor occupancy.

Voice quality - live and replay

PROGNOSIS processes and calculates voice Quality of Service (QoS) in real time for live display and

subsequent replay of any given moment of any given call. Real time codec, latency, jitter and packet loss data are used to calculate a Mean Opinion Score (MOS) every 10 seconds. All QoS data are then mapped to configured

service levels, enabling measurement of service level compliance or breaches as they occur.

Voice quality reports

Automatically generated daily and weekly voice quality reports provide at-a-glance information. This example

shows the degraded and poor quality calls compared to the total calls for the same period. Reports are generated

in voice streams as well as Erlangs.

Network impact - MOS cost

While PROGNOSIS monitors voice quality it determines what impact impairment factors and individual network

hops have on each voice stream – the MOS cost. This information helps you pinpoint which parts of the

network and which impairment factors are having the most impact on voice quality.

How PROGNOSIS works

PROGNOSIS VoIP Monitor installs on a Windows server and gathers data from three sources – RTCP, CDRs and secure SAT connections. To enable this, PROGNOSIS is added as an RTCP monitor server and CDR destination so it can receive data from endpoints such as Avaya phones, softphones, gateways, and CDRs from the PBX.

PROGNOSIS also supports RTCP only monitoring for Communication Manager, Avaya Aura Communication Manager and Integral Enterprise I-55.

Complementing other management tools

PROGNOSIS VoIP Monitor complements Avaya’s bundled administration tool, AIMS. PROGNOSIS monitors, alerts and reports on voice quality while AIMS is designed for performing administrative and maintenance tasks on a PBX by PBX basis.

Next generation voice quality monitoring

Since May 2009 PROGNOSIS VoIP Monitor has shipped with every Avaya PBX providing a migration path for Avaya’s discontinued Integrated Management VoIP Monitoring Manager (VMM).

Once a license key is obtained this out-of -the box version provides free monitoring for up to 250 phones on a single PBX.

Alternatively if you need to monitor more phones and PBXs you can obtain a 30-day unleashed trial. Visit www.voicequality.com to register for a license key, install the product, participate in user forums and access e-learning.

For additional monitoring capability including support for multi-vendor and multiple PBX environments for large enterprises and service providers visit www.prognosis.com/voip
