Two of Ipswich’s oldest residents are getting the recognition they so richly deserve with the inclusion of historic trees in Goodna and Calvert in the Ipswich Planning Scheme and on the National Register of Big Trees Australia.

Councillors Paul Tully and David Morrison praised the decision.

“Protecting our heritage is a huge responsibility, and it is not just building and landmarks we seek to preserve,” Cr Morrison said. “By ensuring that development in Goodna and Calvert protects these trees we preserve an important part of our local history.

“The historic gum-topped box tree in Goodna is 385 years old, predates Ipswich and is one of the oldest in the city.

“To put this in perspective, when Captain Cook sailed up the east coast of Australia in 1770 this tree, 40 km inland from Moreton Bay, was already 142 years old.

“It’s incredible that a tree which pre-dates the American and French revolutions by 150 years is still part of Goodna’s history.

“It has survived the known floods of 1893, 1974 and 2011 and testing shows it is still strong and healthy.”

Cr Morrison said the decision to nominate these trees for the National Register of Big Trees Australia was in made in recognition of their significance to the city.

“The National Register of Big Trees Australia is an evolving, recorded and registered list of Australia’s largest trees in each species,” Cr Morrison said.

“The Register lists Australian native trees and naturalised exotic trees, and these two fine specimens will be joining these ranks.

Cr Pahlke said the protection of the historic forest red gum in Calvert was particularly well deserved.

“This mighty tree has been providing shade to this spot since 1550,” Cr Pahlke said.

“At 463 years old this tree truly is ancient. This tree predates the birth of Galileo and William Shakespeare. This tree was already 37 years old when Queen Elizabeth ordered the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots.

“It predates the European settlement of Australia and has borne silent witness to the growth of a nation and the city of Ipswich.

“The forest red gum is the oldest known tree in Ipswich and is the second largest known forest red gum in Australia. This makes it exceptionally rare, uncommon and historically significant both locally and nationally.

“I’m delighted council have taken such strong measures to protect its future. The hunt will continue however.

“I have a feeling that somewhere out there is a tree more than 500 years old.”

Trees playing a part in history

That’s just what happened and today he is a member of the ground staff at Springfield’s Brookwater Golf Club while at the same time studying a Certificate III in Sports Turf Management at The Bremer Institute of TAFE.

Liam was still at primary school when he started working for his Dad mowing lawns (he stills helps out in the business when he can) but it fired and enthusiasm for working in the industry and the 19 year old some set himself some big goals for his future.

“Brookwater Golf Club is managed by Troon which is a huge international company that manages course all over the world,” he said.

“Working for a company like this can open doors for you and I’m planning to work on courses in the United States in future to build my knowledge and experience”.

Liam’s long term goal is to be a course superintendent or even to travel and mentor superintendents at courses around the world.

“I’ve heard Ohio State University run a Professional Golf Management Program. You have to be 21 to eligible so this is certainly something I’m looking to do in future”.

Liam is one of two Bremer Turf Management students at Brookwater Golf Club while there is a third Bremer student completing a Certificate III in Parks and Gardens.

Bremer TAFE Horticulture teacher, Darren Davidson, said that working in either of these streams of the Horticulture industry offered a wide variety of opportunities for dedicated and committed tradespeople.

“Turf and Parks and Gardens is a growing industry,” he said

“Golf courses are a major driver for the industry but we have some massive sporting stadia in Australia and they all require highly skilled staff. If you consider the Commonwealth Games will be on the Gold Coast in 2018, there will be huge demand for qualified staff to maintaining those grounds in the lead up to, during and after that event.”

Darren also said that this technology, as in many industries, is playing an increasing important role in the maintenance of sporting facilities and young professionals need knowledge of this equipment and practices.

“Soil probes are being used to determine temperature and optimum growing conditions and moisture levels are measured to reset irrigation levels,” he said.

Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said the Ipswich Digital Hub which operated out of the Redbank Plains Library annex, would offer a range of new training programs.

“The hub offers digital skills training for residents and community groups as well as demonstration of NBN-enabled applications,” Cr Pahlke said.

“Established in January this year, the hub has proved popular with the community, attracting more than 1500 visitors and more than 1000 participants up to September 30.

“This group training facility has been well embraced by the community who have appreciated the range of free courses on offer.”

The hub is an initiative of the Ipswich City Council Library Service and the Australian Government Department of Communications.

Courses on offer through the Ipswich Digital Hub in 2014 include:

• Basic computer use, getting connected to the internet, searching the internet, using email;

Recently Ipswich Life ran a story that the club was in the hands of volunteers and was open on a limited basis until a buyer could be found, and Mayor Paul Pisasale said the sale represented tremendous news for the Ipswich community and golfers, particularly given the new owner’s successful track record in hospitality and events.

“I want to congratulate all parties involved in guiding the club through some difficult times since June.

“Soon after the club went in liquidation I called in the services of Ipswich Sports House to work in partnership with BOQ, BDO the Receivers and Mangers, and the community to help get the club back on its feet.

“This has allowed the course to be maintained with the greens improving.

“More importantly, the continued operation of the club has contributed to the sale of the property as a golf course for the benefit of locals and the wider golfing community.”

Gold Coast businessman Dean Merrell said the purchase of the club had a family significance for him.

“My cousin was the greenkeeper here for

many years and he’s travelled the world with work. He sent me a message on facebook telling me about the club. I’ve lost count the number of 21st’s I’ve been to here, and we started investigating.

“My family origainlly are all from Ipswich, my father had a business here and my uncle worked for council for many years.

“We’ve been looking around in our hotel business for a spread of hotels, and we see Ipswich as a big part of our footprint for Sirromet.” Mr Merrell said. “We are in the process of working out the details of forming a club to take over the running of the golf club. It’s not going to happen overnight, it can often take 12-18 months to get people’s confidence back, but we’ll chip away at it and get the community support.”

Recent rain has been a big help for the greens at the club, and Cr Pisasale said the new owners would take over the club as soon as liquor and gaming licences were transferred from the Receivers and Managers.

“All stakeholders are working for this to happen as soon as possible, although the process has taken up to six months in other instances.

“The clubhouse has reopened; the course has reopened, so the future for Ipswich Golf Club is very bright.”

All previous members and new members are now encouraged to re-join the club for a monthly social membership of only $40 per month to support the current trade and improvement of the facilities.

Ipswich Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said council had been working with local graphic design and textile design company Tandem E. Tandem to come up with some t-shirts which captured the essence of the city.

“Tandem E. Tandem approached council with some great designs that really capture three things that Ipswich is famous for — planes, trains and automobiles,” Cr Pahlke said.

“There are two designs of shirts and I’m sure both are going to become popular.

“One design features planes, trains and automobiles while the other is an old-fashioned train ticket and features the history of the railway in Ipswich.

“The shirts will be on sale in a range of sizes for $24.95 each at the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre (VIC) in Queens Park and would make a great Christmas present.

“If this is well received and sales are good, this will just be the start of a range of unique to Ipswich range of shirts.”

Division 4 Councillor Bruce Casos said he was thrilled to see the inclusion of these t-shirts at the VIC.

“It’s good having dad for a boss,” Danielle said. “I’m keen to learn everything about the business, and he’s pretty good at teaching me the ropes!”

How good is it to see the Limelight Cinemas finally open in Ipswich? It’s been a long time coming and everyone seems to be talking about the cinema, eager to try it.

Which brings me to this issue’s subject and that’s Movie Manners. “What’s that?” you ask. Here goes. Movie Manners are something that have disappeared over the years, so here’s something for you to cut out and keep as an easy reference guide. If you know someone that meets any of these criteria, feel free to share this with them.

1) This may come as a shock, but the world won’t end if you turn your phone off. You’re at the movies. Surely you can go 90 minutes without checking Facebook all the time. You. Will. Survive. This.

2) If you’ve seen the movie before and seeing it with friends, saying things like “Watch this bit” doesn’t make people want to watch, it makes them want to punch you on the nose… along with everyone else in the cinema. And they will. Its a huge screen and you’re in the dark. Why wouldn’t they be ‘watching’ you doofus? *slaps head*

3) 3D isn’t new. Yes, it really does look like a dinosaur is floating in mid air in front of you. Which is why standing up and trying to

touch it while giggling like a three year old only makes one person look like a goose… you. And a 3D one to boot.

4) If you have to open packets of chips (which is often so loud it makes your ears bleed), do it in the ads, not halfway through the film in a suspenseful bit. Duh.

5) When you’re at the movies, this might, just MIGHT be a good time to NOT choose a new ringtone for your phone. It will end in tears… trust me. And a phone up your…

6) If you’re watching a movie with a twist, yelling out “I knew it!” actually means “I didn’t figure that out at all.” Busted!

7) Frozen drinks should be for adults only. All parents knows this, because kids guzzle them for five minutes, then slurp noisely at the rest of it for the next hour. JUST FINISH IT ALREADY!

8) Blowing raspberries at the screen for trailers involving Julia Roberts, Jennifer Anniston, Rob Schneider and anything to do with anyone in Twilight… is compulsory.

9) Just in case you missed it…TURN YOUR PHONE OFF!

10) If you ARE watching a Julia Roberts movie, try not to snore too loudly.

Last Monday, 25th November, was International White Ribbon Day. White Ribbon Day is a day when we recognise the positive role that men can play in preventing violence against women. It encourages men in leadership to work together to prevent violence against women from the understanding that most men are not violent.

I spoke in Parliament recently about the issue of domestic violence and as a White Ribbon Ambassador I believe first and foremost I have to be a man who embodies the values, ethics and morals expressed in the White Ribbon campaign in my everyday life at home, at work and in my community.

According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, 36 per cent of all homicides take place in a domestic setting and 73 per cent of those involve a woman being killed by their male partner.

This is a very serious problem in Australia, where at least one woman is killed every week by a current or former partner.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data indicates that that one in three Australian women over the age of 15 reports having experienced physical or sexual violence at some time in their lives.

The violence perpetrated by men against women must stop and it is up to men to stop it. Domestic violence is a bloke’s issue and I believe in the capacity of people to change or encourage change in others.

By preventing violence against women, society will change for the better. I encourage all men to take the White Ribbon Day Oath:

I swear never to commit, excuse or remain silent about violence against women.

Hopefully, the sight of old TVs and computers on Ipswich streets will become a thing of the past, with drop off points now open for such items, enabling residents to recycle these items, and at no charge.

Ipswich City Council has partnered with the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme with free drop-off sites now available for used televisions and computers.

Councillor Cheryl Bromage said the scheme involved government regulation and industry action to reduce the amount of television and computer waste going to landfill and increase the recovery of resources.

“The scheme aims to boost the recycling rate of these products from 17 per cent in

2010 to 80 per cent by 2021 to 2022,” Cr Bromage said.

Cr Bromage said to help Ipswich residents support the scheme a number of drop-off locations had been established for e-waste.

“Drop Zone provides householders and small business with access to free recycling services to dispose of unwanted televisions, computers and computer products (such as printers, keyboards and mice) under the provisions of the scheme.”

The following free drop-off sites have been set up by Drop Zone in Ipswich:

Cr Bromage urges redidents to take their unwanted e-waste to one of the local drop zones.

“This will ensure that these waste products are properly disposed of and will not end up in landfill.”

Recycle your old TVs and PCs - and get junk off the streets

It has been made possible by a $5,000 Safer Queensland Community Grant thanks to Suncorp Insurance and the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit, working in partnership with Apprenticeships Queensland, Datadot Technology and Lockwood ASSA will run the Toolbox Secure; ‘Lose your Tools, lose your Car = lose your Job’ project.

It is a series of education sessions, highlighting the value of locking and securing property, crime trends, property identification methods, along with security strategies and initiatives to safeguard their property, across the Southern Police Region.

Senior Constable Kerrin Sheedy from the Ipswich Crime Prevention Unit said, “It’s important for everyone to protect and secure their property, remove their valuables out of sight and adopt strong security habits. However it’s been made aware that apprentices, especially those in the building trade are experiencing high theft and loss across the Southern Police Region.

“By engaging in partnership and working collaboratively with fellow police from other districts, we are ready to combat this increase

by providing education at the root of the problem” she said.

Presentations will be delivered across the region at Apprenticeships Queensland and the Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE, with information being provided to Host Employers, and Trade Suppliers.

at all times• Secure the toolbox to the tray of your

A local access point in Rosewood has been officially named by Ipswich City Council.

Division 10 Councillor David Pahlke said the footbridge in Johnston Park at 61 John St, Rosewood would now be known as ‘Cabanda Crossing’.

“We have now added an interpretive sign to the bridge which carries the history of this link as well as that of its namesake the nearby Cabanda Aged Care facility.”

Cr Pahlke said the previously unnamed footbridge provided a vital link across Mason’s Gully from Cabanda Aged Care facility and was a popular addition to Johnston Park.

He said the name of new bridge has been chosen to reflect the community’s close association with Cabanda.

“After identifying the need for a nursing home in Rosewood in the late 1970s, the community banded together to raise the funding needed for such a facility through raffles, street stalls and bingo.

“A group of retired men also collected bottles, cardboard and scrap metal and ended up running an organised salvage team which raised $125,000 over 11 years.

“Funding was also received from the Federal Government for the construction of Cabanda which was supplemented by continued fundraising such as annual door knock appeals throughout the area.”

Cabanda was finally established in 1987 with an initial intake of 26 people.

Today, the facility has 44 independent living units and operates a day respite

centre for around 20 clients each weekday.Cr Pahlke said he was thrilled to be able to

officially name the footbridge in honour of Cabanda and its residents.

“This facility is an important part of Rosewood and is wonderful to be able to recognise it in this way. As we officially launch this new crossing I would also like to pay tribute to former Moreton Shire Councillor John Turner who had pushed for the original bridge structure to be put in place.

“The original bridge was put in place about 20 years ago with council supplying the materials while members of the local Apex and Lions Clubs built it.

“It was replaced by a new steel structure about three years ago.”

have tried every diet known to man without any great success. My mum says I am yo-yo dieting. Is that true?

It does sound like you’re yo-yo dieting, and let me assure you: You’re not alone. The medical evidence that diets don’t work for long term weight loss is overwhelming yet we remain willfully blind to this fact because we are constantly bombarded with misinformation disguised as marketing messages. A typical weight loss person has been a yo-yo dieter for years and has tried everything from shakes to personal trainers without success. By the time they come to me, they are wary about wasting more money on weight loss; however, once they learn how to love their weight loss, they never regret taking the plunge with me.

The reason why they don’t regret taking the plunge is because my methods are completely different. After all, the fastest way to lose weight is to do it once – so you never have to do it again. Most diet and exercise programs are all about “100% effort”, but consider this:

If you begin a weight loss program with 100% effort, you might be able to last maybe three weeks—if you’re lucky! So, your total effort for that time period would equate to 300%. But, give just 80% effort over five weeks and you’ll get 400% in results. Even more startling: a mere 25% effort over 25 weeks is going to give you 625% in results. Do something for 25 weeks (that’s five months of the year) and you’re much more likely to want to keep doing it forever.

A group of Bundamba servicemen have been recognised at a special ceremony.

Ipswich City Council Division 4 Councillor Bruce Casos said the four men from the Bundamba area had paid the ultimate sacrifice during World War II but their service had remained unrecognised in Ipswich.

“Until now the names of these World War II soldiers – Clement Ralph Buckeridge, David Arthur Millar, Michael James Kelleher and Alexander Carrington Titmarsh - had not be included on the Bundamba Memorial.

“Bundamba ANZAC Observance Committee and Council have been working together to ensure that these local men are officially recognised as Fallen World War II veterans.”

The Bundamba ANZAC Observance Committee and council unveiled the plaque at the Bundamba Memorial recently.

The service involved the dedication of an additional tablet on the Bundamba honour stone acknowledging the men’s service.

“The plaque has been an initiative of the Bundamba ANZAC Observance Committee and has been arranged and funded by council.

Cr Casos said council was pleased to be able to support the committee on this project which will ensure that the names live on into the future.

He said the Bundamba ANZAC Observance

Committee have been attempting to contact the families of the four servicemen.

Bundamba ANZAC Observance Committee patron Keith Pennell said a thorough search of the National Archive and Australian War Memorial records had revealed those whose names should be on the memorial.

“Local researcher Eddie Habben has carried out this research and obtained the necessary documentation,” Mr Pennell said.

“We thank Mr Habben for the painstaking research he undertook to ensure that these soldiers are acknowledged and remembered by the community.

“This will ensure that their names live on for the future and that their service to their country is properly recognised.”

Queen’s Park, IpswichThe genesis of the present day Queen’s Park can be traced back to the early 1840s, but not at the same location. In 1842, a reserve was set aside for the purposes of a botanical and agricultural reserve at Woodend. In 1855, Mr. Walter Hill was appointed the Director of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens as well as being given responsibility for the reserves at Ipswich, Toowoomba and Warwick. Ipswich residents were however, not in favour of the Woodend site and at a public meeting held in 1856 they decided for a change of site to the current Queen’s park location.

During the 1860s plans were drawn and development progressed with various plantings as well as facilities being constructed. By 1875, a house had been built for the superintendent, a bush house in 1890 and a band rotunda in 1891. The original area of the reserve or gardens progressively reduced over the years, with resumptions of land for various public purposes. At the same time, development and improvement of the gardens and facilities has continued, for instance, substantial improvements were undertaken

during the 1930s through relief labour provided during the Great Depression.

Queen’s Park has continued to develop with recent work including the redesign of the menagerie as a nature garden. Also, in 2001, the Nerima Japanese Garden was created in an area formerly occupied by steel framed glasshouses. A lookout, with views over the city of Ipswich has long been a feature of the park.

Free Wi-Fi now in Ipswich MallFree Wi-Fi is now available in the Ipswich Mall and ICON Ipswich Tower provided by a new network provided as a community service by ICON Ipswich in partnership with Ipswich City Council. Access is enabled for all Wi-Fi devices including smartphones, tablets and laptop computers.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the new service would help encourage shoppers and visitors to stay and shop longer in the city centre.

“Ipswich Central is being redeveloped and already functions as the key commercial centre to service the western corridor.

“If we are to continue to attract new businesses then we must also provide services such as free internet connection for shoppers and workers.

“The new system currently covers the Ipswich Mall and ICON Ipswich Tower 1, but has provision in the design to be expanded at some point in the future,” Cr Pisasale said. “Young people love their computers and smart phones, and we need to be a smart city.

“In 1994 we became the first city to have its own ISP with ‘GIL’, and this is another chapter in that story. ICP is a company set up by council, and that means it is owned by the people of Ipswich. It’s like a library. You never recoup the cost of a library, but it gives knowledge to a community, this is like a global library.”

Ipswich City Properties Pty Ltd (ICP) and Leighton Properties Pty Limited, developers of ICON Ipswich, provided funding for installation of the free Wi-Fi network.

To get the Wifi to work on a device simply turn on the wi-fi on your device and logon to the connection titled ‘ICP_Mall” Open your browser, accept the terms and conditions and you’re right to go!

Cr Paul Tully said the system would provide fair access for all users with an initial 10MB download limit in a 24 hour period.

“This download allowance will be adequate to check emails, catch up with friends on social media or surf the web.

“The city made history in 2011 when the joint development partners officially commenced construction of ICON Ipswich.

“I’d like to encourage other shopping centres around Ipswich to follow our lead. With all the public servants coming to the CBD, people now expect wifi access. “

Riverside Park work begins at KaraleeWork has begun to restore Riverside Park at Karalee following a design phase, public consultation and awarding of the tender.This popular Brisbane River park was severely damaged in the 2011 flood. Ipswich City Council was left with the task of restoring the riverbank, boat ramp and other facilities washed away by floodwaters.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the complex nature of the site required detailed engineering surveys to be undertaken and negotiations with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) to fund ‘like for like’ replacement of flood damaged infrastructure.

“A number of draft plans were drawn up and we also made a commitment to involve the community with information sessions which were conducted at the beginning of the year.

“There were several hurdles placed in our way before coming up with a concept design that met with approval from state government agencies and users of the park.

“It is tremendous to finally see work underway. When Riverside Park is completed, along with current work on Richardson Park and River Heart Parklands, it will officially mark the end of repairs and restoration of council-owned infrastructure damaged in the major flood of 2011,” Cr Pisasale said.

The community consultation phase of the project drew more than 80 people to sessions at Karalee State School and the local shopping centre.

Division 5 councillor Heather Morrow said it was important that a diverse range of views were canvassed.

“These sessions gave meaningful feedback to

the design team and I’m thrilled we now have a way forward to rebuild this important park for the local community.

“Now that a concept design has been finalised and work has commenced, we can look forward to once again enjoying this popular parkland overlooking the Brisbane River at Karalee.

Ipswich Little Theatre is finishing off the year at the Incinerator Theatre with a guaranteed audience pleaser, the heart-warming comedy “Butterflies are Free”. The film version of this play is best remembered for starring Goldie Hawn in her first major role fresh from the iconic T.V. series, ‘Laugh-in’.

Don Baker (played by Ben Cumpstay) has lived all of his life being protected and smothered by his mother. He now feels the need to move into an apartment of his own – to be free. He makes a contract with his mother that she will not come to see him for at least two months. After one month beautiful, kooky Jill (Didi Leslie) moves into the apartment next door and his new life really begins. Then the unexpected arrival of Don’s mother (Linda Shapcott) threatens his

new found freedom and a boyfriend of Jill’s (Florian Coste) adds a further complication.

Directed by accomplished actor/director, Les Chappell the play is already attracting the good audience numbers enjoyed by each Incinerator Theatre production this year.

Heritage Marker shows original site of St Joseph’s Primary SchoolA new brass heritage marker to mark the original site of St Joseph’s Primary School in North Ipswich was unveiled today.Division 6 councillor Cheryl Bromage said it was fitting in the centenary year of the school that the original site of learning now had a permanent reminder on display.

“St Joseph’s school was established in 1913 in a small combined church and school room at 34A Albert Street North Ipswich.

“Classes were taught by the Sisters of Mercy who travelled from St Mary’s Convent each day. The school was relocated to the former Tarampa Hall on Pine Mountain Road during World War II.

“The original school building was moved to the school’s present Pine Mountain Road site in 1948. This new marker is one of several school centenary year highlights in a year-long celebration which included a school dinner dance, fete, and a past and present staff dinner.”

Cr Bromage also thanked the current owners of 34A Albert Street for their support of the heritage marker and having it erected in front of their property.

“Ipswich City Council’s Heritage Marker Program began in 1990 to identify place of cultural significance and is regarded as one of the most ambitious heritage programs undertaken anywhere in Australia.

“It is important we capture and record sites of historical interest for the benefit of future generations.”

Cr Bromage said the program to highlight historic sites in Ipswich has been a great success.

“The program has been running a number of years and we already have several plagues that sit outside historic houses, and we wanted to celebrate the role St. Josephs has played in the history of North Ipswich.

“It took a while for the site to be found,

and had to call on older members of the community to get help.”

St. Josephs Principal Martin Lewis said that help from the community has assisted the school in finding out some of the history of the school in its Centenary year.

“We’ve got a lot of photos that have come through, especially about the movement of the church to the top of the hill, and although there are no pics of the actual site here, we did find out about students that attended. We put the call out to the community, and one man John Rossitor who lives across from the school, had some contacts that we used to find out some of the history.

“My mother actually attended the school, and we also found out about the first student to be enrolled. While we’re talking of all things weird… Lady Gaga called her boyfriend Taylor Kinney (above) a ‘secret weirdo’. They’ve been dating since 2011, so I guess she doesn’t really mind a bit of weirdness. Gaga told Ellen: “He is extremely strange actually and we complement each other’s weirdness. That’s actually one of the first things he ever said to me. It’s a Dr Seuss quote that you find in someone else a compatible weirdness. And it was one of the first things he’s said to me.”

Kelly Clarkson announced she’s expecting her first child with hubby Brandon Blackstock. They tied the knot earlier this year, and Clarkson made no secret of how much and how quickly she wanted to get pregnant after getting married.

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine (above) has been crowned the “Sexiest Man Alive” by People magazine. It’s a big call, but Adam’s got the goods — not only is he a looker with a smooth voice and an awesome “The Voice” coach, but he’s recently branched out into acting in the 2013 flick Can A Song Save Your Life? Starring oppostire Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo. He’s also released his own range of men’s clothing and started a men’s fragrance line.

Imagine how differently the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey movie would look with Mark Wahlberg as Christian Grey. He revealed he fought for the film rights to EL James’ erotic fiction, and was close to securing the deal, but lost in a bidding war. Pity, he would’ve made a perfect Christian Grey… Michael De Luca (who now has the role after Charlie Hunnam dropped out) agreed. He said “Grey looks a lot like Mark Wahlberg. I mean, the woman wrote a fantasy: a square-jawed, tall, broad-shouldered, genius, billionaire Adonis…”

The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire is on its way to being movie of the year at the Aussie box office. It took in $12m down under in the opening weekend. It’s the second biggest debut of the year, behind Iron Man 3 in May, and believe it or not, it’s an even better movie than the first…in my humble opinion.

Bless you Rebel Wilson (above), for even though you are now a Hollywood megastar, you still admit to stealing food ‘for later’ from the all-you-can-eat buffets, just like the rest of us. Rebel spilled the beans on Ellen, saying she was caught stealing desserts from an exclusive Disneyland club: “The way I was brought up, if you see a buffet, you take some home for later. They had all these fancy cookies, with Club 33 written in gold... So I just got my bag, no one’s looking, wrapped up stuff in a napkin and put it all in the bag. The waiter saw me doing it and we totally got busted. He goes, ‘Madam, if you’d like to take some home, perhaps you’d like to use this container’”.

And more baby news! Aussie ‘Thor’ star Chris Hemsworth is set to become a dad for the second time. Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky (above) welcomed their first daughter India Rose in 2012, and just announced they’re expecting their second bub in 2014.

Super Hornet aircrews deploy weapons on ‘Top End’ ranges

Faru Sumu is a three week biannual exercise involved up to 18 Super Hornets and 250 personnel from the two Super Hornet squadrons at RAAF Amberley.

Commanding Officer No 6 Squadron, Wing Commander Robert Denney, said that the exercise involved a series of air-to-ground and air-to-air scenarios that tested students undergoing the Super Hornet Operational Conversation course to the highest level.

“For the first time, 6 Squadron was also

joined in Exercise Faru Sumu No 1 Squadron, enabling aircrews and support personnel from both squadrons the opportunity to work together and maintain a high level of weapon deployment proficiency.

“Faru Sumu also provides invaluable training for our logistics, support and maintenance personnel as they practise deploying to other bases and work together with different squadrons.

“Deploying up to 18 jets and 250 personnel is a massive effort for the planning team.

For the first two weeks the Super Hornets operated in the Delamere and Bradshaw Range Complex, which offers adequate space and ranges for crews to simulate full-scale ground attacks.

“Flying was conducted

in the morning/afternoon for the first week and afternoon/nights during the second week.

In the third week aircrews flew air-to-air gunnery sorties with the support of a Pel Air aircraft towing gunnery targets.

The air and maritime exercise involving Australia and its regional security partners is a major regional exercise that confirms interoperability and enables joint and single-Service training on a range of combat related air defence and attack tasks.Commander Australian Contingent, Wing Commander Louis Nuttycombe, said the exercise enabled sharing operational methods between the FPDA military elements and provides an opportunity to enhance relationships and interoperability with Australia’s security partners.

“Exercise Bersama Lima 2013 involved planning and rehearsing air and maritime operations in the South China Sea, Malaysia and Singapore,” he said.

“The exercise involved about 300 Australian Defence Force personnel alongside those from the other member nations.

“RAAF aircraft participating in the exercise included F/A-18 Hornet, AP-3C Orion, E-7A Wedgetail and KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft.

“Royal Australian Navy ship HMAS Sirius

also provided a replenishment capability in support of the Maritime Component Commander.

Many of the Australian participants operated from Headquarters – Integrated Area Defence Systems at Royal Malaysian Air Force Base Butterworth.

The FPDA is the longest standing multilateral arrangement in South East Asia and has maintained relevance in the contemporary security environment.

The exercise series promotes a shared understanding of procedures for air and

maritime operations, protection of the marine environment and disaster relief management. It is also important training for ADF personnel to hone key skills, working as a combined force, building regional relationships with FPDA nations.

The ABC News Ipswich team of Eric Tiozek and Courtney Wilson have found out firsthand why would-be intruders onto Defence Force property face dangerous confrontation with military working dogs – and what happens to these highly trained animals when they too need to retire from work.

Eric and Courtney found out that man’s best friend is being given a new lease of life under, a new program that allows Military Working Dogs to be considered for retirement with their handlers.

Previously, MWDs have had to be put down at the end of their service as they were considered too dangerous to go back into the community, but as Sergeant Russ Durre, who heads the Military Working Dog Unit at RAAF Amberley put it, “we can now release some of the dogs from military service into their handlers’ care, and they can spend the rest of their years in a home environment rather than the Service environment.”

‘Turk’ is the first MWD from Amberley to successfully complete the assessment, switching home from the Base to the suburban backyard, cared for by former

handler, Corporal Bruce Ross.“To have him home is extremely important

not only for me but for every other handler in the Defence Force,” Corporal Ross said.

During the assessment process it’s evident whether a dog has the right temperament, and after eight years of service, Turk’s gentle nature made him a prime candidate for retirement.However, the highly-trained German Shepherd still had to pass a rigorous assessment process to prove he was suitable for civilian life.

Turk underwent testing on his reaction to stress, and was assessed both in public to see how he handled attention and at the RSPCA to gauge his interaction with other dogs.

But it’s not all good news for some dogs, as they are bred and specially trained to detect and detain intruders, some dogs just can’t be let out into public.

One approach to building wealth is to have a financial planner: they set an investment plan, organise estate planning, superannuation and life insurances. And they measure your advancement against your goals. But how do you find a planner? Where do you start? Here are a few ideas:

Know what you need: having a clear idea of your needs is a good starting point. If you’re an employee needing retirement advice you’ll have different needs to a business owner who wants a self-managed super fund.

Understand credentials: a planner should be a representative of an Australian Financial Services License (AFSL), which means the adviser operates under legislated standards. There are also two main professional bodies for financial planners: the Financial Planning Association (FPA) and the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA). Both have codes of conduct and dispute resolution.

What’s important to you? Think about who you want to deal with: it might be a person of the same age, the same gender or someone

with a similar professional background to you. Know this before you search. Look at the FSG: financial

planners need a Financial Services Guide which tells

you the firm’s specialties, and a profile of individual

advisers.

Call and meet: get a short list and make some phone calls. Ask what they offer, what kind of client they usually deal with and what extra specialties exist in their practice. Then go and meet the ones you like.

Getting to know: advisers know there should be a rapport between them and their clients, so most give you an hour free of charge. Use this to get an idea of fees, processes and strengths.

Be prepared to pay: the old system of planning looked ‘free’ but the planner may have been taking commissions. Planners and advisers now mostly charge a fee for service, which includes a Statement of Advice which could cost somewhere between $800 and $3000. And most adviser firms charge between $1000 and $3000 annually to manage your plan.

Decide on contact: some investors want constant communication via emails and newsletters; others want one intense meeting each year. Be clear on how you want your adviser to communicate with you. Once you’ve selected a financial planner/adviser, your selection of them becomes an ongoing process which involves as much your input as theirs.

Finally, any approach to a financial adviser should emphasise your needs and situation. Make sure that every conversation is centered around you and what you’re looking to achieve. It’s personal, it’s your future. For any further information call Mike 0434968862.

BMW double winner in Best Cars of 2013BMW’s 320i and BMW M135i have both taken out the top awards in their respective classes at the 2013 ‘Australia’s Best Cars’ awards ceremony held at Albert Park recently.

Following the massive success of Subaru’s BRZ online ordering program launched last year, the new initiative for WRX adds to the brand’s online ability — but only until the first 100 have been pre-ordered.

From November 26th, customers can visit a secure payment portal on subaru.com.au to nominate their vehicle colour, transmission and authorised Subaru retailer with whom they want to complete their contract.

Subaru Australia will take a fully refundable $2500 deposit, which guarantees customers their new pre-ordered WRX is in the first Australian batch, due to land in March or April 2014.

Customers will then need to complete the transaction and finalise paperwork with their Subaru retailer within 14 days of the vehicle landing.

Online pre-orders will close at 11:59pm on December 13, or as soon as the 100 WRXs are pre-ordered — whichever occurs first.

Subaru Managing Director, Nick Senior, said: “We’ve already had a huge spike of interest in WRX on our own website and are aware of significant pent-up demand.

Toyota sold 72 per cent more vehicles than any other carmaker in Australia last month as Corolla strengthened its lead as the country’s best-selling car. Dealers representing the market-leading Toyota brand delivered in excess of 18,100 vehicles to customers in October compared with just over 10,500 for its nearest rival. Toyota’s result was led by the evergreen Corolla, which has topped the national sales chart since May. Corolla has exceeded 3,000 sales for each of the past nine months, stretching its lead as Australia’s best-selling car this year to more than 1,500 registrations. Toyota had three of the top six best-selling vehicles in October with strong performances from HiLux (3,172 sales) and the locally built Camry (2,251). Other Toyota vehicles to lead their segments for the month were the 86 sports car, LandCruiser 200 series SUV, HiAce van and HiAce bus. RAV4 had its best October on record. Last month’s results lifted Toyota’s overall tally so far this year beyond 176,900 deliveries. No other company has reached 100,000 sales in 2013. Toyota also widened the gap over the second-placed brand to a remarkable 84,500 deliveries compared with a margin of 82,111 at the same stage last year. The company’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said Toyota was set to record its 11th consecutive year of market leadership - a winning streak that has not been achieved by any carmaker in more than 30 years.  “Toyota has embarked on a strong push to the end of the year with our sights set on achieving well in excess of 210,000 sales from an unrivalled range of locally built and imported vehicles,” Mr Cramb said. “We are particularly focused on our locally built Camry and Aurion sedans as well as newly revised versions of Prado and

HiLux,” he said. “In addition, we are entering the run-out phase for Corolla sedan and Kluger SUV ahead of next-generation models that are coming in the first half of 2014.”
