PJ Tierney: a real life Karate Kid

For Paula (PJ) Tierney, it was all part of career that has now taken a turn to literature, as the forty-something author releases the first in a five-part series of books for young readers in the shape of ‘Jamie Reign’.

PJ says herself her life was ‘uneventful’ until she got to university and studied Creative Arts. With a degree under her arm, she set off on an incredible career with some of the world’s biggest artists.

She has sat in a truss beside Madonna descending on a mirror ball, and has worked with the likes of U2, Elton John and BB King to name a few.

“It all happened very quickly,” PJ said from her Sydney office. “I was a little bit lucky being a girl in a predominantly male industry. If you are half decent, and I was good at my job… its can be possible to get recognised.

“Conversely, if you do make a mistake, you can’t slip into the background either. Getting from university to being on stage with Madonna, it’s a matter of just introducing

yourself to the right people and being able to do the work when the jobs come up.

“It was still in the back of my mind that I wanted to write books. Even from school I wanted to write. I had a pretty sheltered life… leading a middle class existence, nice school and not too much stress then straight into uni, there wasn’t much from my life I could draw from.

“I think the excitement of being involved in these concerts was what enticed me to it. The excitement of just being there is enough, and who doesn’t want to hang out backstage with rock stars at age 22?

“But I can’t tell you how exhausting it was. It’s a busy life. Trucks arrive at 8am at an empty venue and the show begins at 8 pm no matter what. You have all those people working to a tight deadline and its like doing three days work in one day. The audiences are unforgiving. The show has to go on.”

It was working on the handover of Hong Kong to China where the author’s creation

started to form, as PJ soaked up life in the busy city.

“I spent a lot of time working on barges in Hong Kong for the handover, and we spent weeks on boats, and tugs just getting everything ready for this huge show that the world was going to witness. There was about 80 craft we were managing and I found the place fascinating.

“I think that’s where the bulk of the Jamie Reign story came from. I loved the language, and the customs. For example there was a large barge which was dressed up like a dragon. According to local custom we had to get a monk to paint the eyes on the dragon. There we are bowing three times while this monk paints the dragon’s eye…things like that are so foreign to most of us in Australia, I find it fascinating.

“That’s the important thing, I had to write this book as an outsider. My husband’s life is represented in the first few chapters of this book, if you do read it, it’s a homage to him.

There can’t be too many people who can claim to have toured the world with Madonna, U2 and Elton John. Nor being off to the side when filming of The Matrix is happening before your eyes. Not a bad day job.

COMMUNITYA WORD FROM THE

EDITOR

It was really exciting to see all the goings on in the CBD recently as the ABC filmed their telemovie ‘Parer’s War’ over several days and nights. So many people in Ipswich have been captivated by seeing people in their 1940’s costume and the cars spotted around town from that era are just amazing. Plus with the Ipswich 360 just around the corner, its a different kind of car on the racetrack we see today than those from the forties!

Ipswich loves the V8’s. We all know that this is a car loving town, and the V8’s draw people from all over the area ready to soak up the atmosphere along with the exhaust fumes.

Along with all the info on the big weekend, this issue of Ipswich Life is full of local news including the lowdown on the Council’s budget, plus entertainment news, giveaways, views, puzzles and heaps more.

Its also a good time to check out schools as its a good time of year to consider where to send your children for their education, and our school feature should be able to help.

Till next time, drive safe Ipswich!E: [email protected]

His story is so amazing that I couldn’t help but write it. Growing up on the harbours of Hong Kong, it’s a fascinating and also heartbreaking story.

“For a while I wasn’t sure if it was a biography I was writing, but then in came Kung Fu (and I always wanted to be the Karate Kid), plus add in some Eastern mysticism, it all came together. I’m very proud of it.

“I wrote about Jamie as a story I’d like to read as a ten year old. In the editing all the language is refined for the younger reader.

“I think its formed part of the mythology of childhood these days that they live in the worlds of ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Percy Jackson’. I love the ‘Rangers Apprentice’ books too, I take inspiration from those books that kids want to read stuff like this, and its nice to know that I’m having a part in their childhood.”

The first book, ‘The Last Spirit Warrior’ has just been released, and already a sequel will be out in time for Christmas. It’s a story that PJ always planned to spread over several books.

“It was always intended to be a series, there are five all up, and part two will be out in December. It’s what I always proposed to the publishers, maybe its unique to this (younger reader) market, because the characters have so much growth to do. I know I enjoy watching characters grow over a series, maybe that’s the reason why people love stories spread over time.”

Jamie Reign: The Last Spirit Warrior is out now

WIN A COPY OF ‘Jamie Reign: The Last Spirit Warrior’Thanks to Harper Collins, we have 3 copies of ‘Jamie Reign: The Last Spirit Warrior’ to give away to our younger readers. Winter is here. I am now regularly smelling burning wood fires, watching the leaves of liquid ambers turn to auburn and begin to fall, and here at home it’s knitted jumpers and warm socks to the hilt until I’m sure we’ve put on another 10kg alone in layering. It’s also this time of year that I particularly yearn for the comfort of warm puddings.

Before we left South Australia a couple of weeks ago, we were loaded with jars of homemade Apricot Jam which began me on cravings for some home-baked Bread Pudding drizzled with cream.

My Bread Pudding is one of those kind of desserts that each mouthful reminds me of being tucked up in bed, snug as a bug and reading the best of books.

$10 million facelift for Springfield greenspace corridor

Already host to education, technology, health and business precincts within this master planned community, Springfield’s current population of 23,000 is expected to grow eventually to 85,000. Construction on Phase Two will commence by year’s end, and on completion the Parkland will include a new entry plaza, water plaza, waterfall, lake, picnic areas, pathways, floral terraces and a lookout.

“Stage one of Robelle Domain has been enthusiastically embraced by residents where you can always find families out enjoying the recreational and play areas,” said Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale.

“With Ipswich’s population now at 180,000, we are ensuring that we have the leisure facilities people value. It is the final chapter of what we are endeavouring to achieve in Springfield. Jobs and education are all important, but we are also creating a great lifestyle in a family friendly city of Ipswich, and this is part of it.

“We need to continually show the people of Queensland that we are a world class city. My attitude is ‘no more second-class for Ipswich’; anything we do will continue to be world class.”

The project is jointly funded by Ipswich City Council and the Australian Government.

Local Councillor David Morrison said Stage 2 would deliver a welcome expansion of the

domain with more space and beautiful floral landscaping. Also proposed is a second zero depth water play area, which are so popular with local families and kids.

“We now have the distinction of having Queensland’s oldest part in Queens Park, which is 150 years old this month, and its newest park in Robelle.”

Robelle is part of the Springfield Central Parklands which is 487 hectares of open space that extends 13 km along Woogaroo and Opossum Creeks, making it one of the most extensive urban parkland corridors in Australia.

Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann said the Government had invested $15 million into Robelle Domain, as it creates social and economic benefits.

“Stage 2 of this project will employ around 84 people, attract up to 500,000 visitations, with a total economic impact of approximately $7.7 million on the South East Queensland economy,” he said.

“It’s focussed on jobs and growth in the Western Corridor.

Co-accomplice at the Federal Government level, Bernie Ripoll MP, said that the government’s attitude is about building community infrastructure and facilities, and that Robelle was just one example of this enterprise.

“Springfield is about building a community,

a great community, building something that has a heart and a soul, and that’s right here in the heart of Springfield...come and see it, and enjoy it,” he said.

Commitment to expansion has also been welcomed by the University of Southern Queensland in the adjacent Education City. USQ has a rapidly growing campus with over 1700 students and 100 staff, who are potentially major users of the parkland. There are also nine public and private schools across Greater Springfield’s six local suburbs.

“This development also sends an impressive marketing message to potential international students about what South East Queensland has to offer,” said Campus Executive Manager, Doug Fraser, who has been at the campus from the outset when it was surrounded by bushland.

Greater Springfield’s visionary founder Maha Sinnathamby said this announcement heralded the making of an intergenerational tourist hub for the whole region and with it countless opportunities to deliver a vast range of social and economic benefits to many people.

“Greater Springfield has approval for more than 1.4 million square metres of retail, office, health, education and residential development equivalent to the size of North Sydney,” he said.

Robelle Domain Parkland is fast becoming the community recreational hub of Springfield, a green space link between Orion Shopping Centre, residential areas and Springfield Central — and it is set to expand further funding for an additional 10 hectares of walking tracks, grassed areas and gardens.

OUT AND ABOUT IN BLAIR

A new financial year brings good things for local workers and families.

Over the past few weeks families would have begun receiving the second installment of the SchoolKids bonus.

I know this is a welcome relief for thousands of local families faced with back-to-school costs.

Eligible families receive $205 for each child in primary school, and $410 for each child in high school.

There is good news for workers this financial year, with the increase of the Superannuation Guarantee to 9.25 per cent. This will rise gradually to 12 per cent on 1 July 2019.

This reform means a 30 year old on average full-time wages who retires at age 67 will retire with an extra $127,000 in superannuation savings.

The Federal Government has abolished the superannuation guarantee age limit, so workers aged over 70 will receive the same universal superannuation.

There are now even more ways to lodge a tax return. The Federal Government raised the tax-free threshold to $18,200, effectively freeing up a million people from having to lodge a tax return.

A new app, ATO Tax 2013, is available free from the Apple AppStore and Google Play.

People can lodge their returns electronically using e-tax, or for those who prefer paper forms you can still order them.

I encourage you to keep up with any news via my website: www.ShayneNeumann.com.au.

Feel free to ask me a question or post a comment on my Facebook or Twitter sites. Or call my office on 3201 5300 to find out my mobile office locations.

Warm regards,Shayne NeumannMember for Blair

Be friendly to your environment

Utilise your yellow binDid you know if you don’t recycle household items properly, they cannot

be properly recycled? Your yellow-lidded bin can take paper, newspaper, magazines, and cardboard, milk and juice cartons, pizza boxes, glass jars, aluminium drink cans, steel food cans, aerosol cans and plastic bottles and containers.

Start compostingComposting is the natural breakdown of organic material into

a loose earth-like substance that can be used as a natural fertiliser for our gardens. Approximately half of our domestic rubbish consists of kitchen and garden waste, which makes excellent compost and to put this back into the earth, rather than landfill is a great way to help the environment.

Worm farmingWorm farming is another great form of composting. A worm farm can turn

all your kitchen scraps into an excellent solid fertiliser and a liquid that will help give your garden a boost.

Recycle plastic bagsDid you know a single-use plastic bag is used on average for 12

minutes and can take up to 1000 years to decompose? You can help the environment by giving them a second use (rubbish bag) or you can return them to your local supermarket for recycling.

Get involvedYou can help the environment by getting involved in programs and

events that support our region. Visit the Queens Park Environmental Education Centre and discover ways you can be more environmentally friendly.

Norton Internet Security are bringing the Norton Racing car to the Ipswich Mall outside Harvey Norman from July 19 to July 25 ahead of the Ipswich 360 Supercar Weekend to give customers and fans the opportunity to see up close a real V8 supercar.

It will also promote the importance of online security and the real risk of cybercrime as 2 out of 3 Australians have been affected by cybercrime.

James Moffat & Michael Caruso head the Nissan team and the new Nissan Altimas were quickly dubbed the ’Hornets’ by race fans.

These new cars pack a punch with a 5.6 litre 668 Horsepower V8 speeding to a Top speed of 298 Km/h and an acceleration of 0–100 km in just over 3 seconds.

Also on the 20th and 21st July will

be the Fujitsu Supercar to please Holden Motorsport fans.

“We are really excited to have these cars on display for fans of the V8’s,” said Daniel Heydon from Harvey Norman. “It’s nice to have such a good relationship with brands like Norton and Fujitsu that allows us to bring events like this to Ipswich.

“The Coates Hire Ipswich 360 is one of the highlights of the year for local sports fans and we know how much people in Ipswich love their motorsport!”

The Ipswich Art Gallery will extend its new Children’s Exhibition ‘Light Play’ due to its popularity with children.

Councillor Charlie Pisasale said ‘Light Play’, which opened on July 15, will be extended one week to accommodate the high number of groups keen to experience the exhibition.

“What a fantastic achievement for the Gallery,” Cr Pisasale said.

“Light Play will give children the opportunity to explore the different properties of light using overhead projectors and light boxes to create a unique, interactive light-filled space. It’s all about experimentation, discovery, learning and play.”

Cr Pisasale said interest from school and kindergarten groups in the Gallery’s education program was increasing.

“More than 6000 students visited the Gallery in the past year to take part in interactive art activities, with schools now coming from Ipswich, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

“I encourage all teachers to subscribe to

the Gallery’s school tours and workshops e-newsletter via its website for information about upcoming exhibitions and events.”

Light Play opened in the Children’s Gallery recently and will now finish on August 25. The free exhibition is recommended for children aged three to 12 years but all ages are welcome.

Teachers wishing to book a workshop for their students can phone the Ipswich Art Gallery on 3810 7222. Bookings are essential.

Light Play will open to the public from 2.30pm until 5pm Monday to Friday following school and kindergarten workshops, and 10am to 5pm on weekends.

The Ipswich Art Gallery is open from 10am to 5pm daily and entry is free.

Preparations for the next phase of the College’s development are well underway with the building of a new senior primary section on the college’s second campus.

The Westside Christian College pathway of learning starts at Pre-Prep where getting ready for school begins. The early years (Prep- Year 3) are when the foundations for learning are laid. Senior Primary (Years 4-7) builds on those foundations. Junior High School (Years 8–10) consolidates the essential learning areas, while introducing some choice. The Senior Years (11–12) complete the school curriculum by preparing for future learning and work after graduation.

At Westside Christian College we have been very pleased with the academic achievements of our students over a number of years. The NAPLAN results of our students have been consistently above national benchmarks. Our students typically achieve well above State averages in OP’s and end of Year 12 results. The development of students’ sporting and creative gifts is seen as an integral part of the College’s program. Our students’ achievements in athletics, team sports, art, drama, public speaking, dance, swimming and music are impressive.

At Westside students may achieve above average results in many areas.

We understand that parents want their children to have the best possible opportunities to develop academically, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Research also tells us that parents look for a school, where their children will be secure and feel loved and cared for. Choosing the right school for your family is one of the most important decisions you make.

So why might Westside Christian College meet your family’s needs?

Firstly, because the success of a school in the care and nurture of its students ultimately depends upon the quality of the teachers

Westside Christian College has had a proven, consistent record of providing quality education for its students, since it first opened its doors 36 years ago in the suburb of Goodna. Much has changed since the foundation of the College, but the Westside culture of achievement, belonging and care remains strong.

COMMUNITY

College for Achievement, Belonging, and Care

and other staff at the school. The teachers at Westside are an experienced group of professionals, who care about the wellbeing of each student.

Experience and continuity of staff are crucial to building the culture of any organization, but especially a school. Westside is blessed to have many teachers and other staff, who have served here for many years. This has enabled us to build our College’s culture, year upon year, while continuing to improve so as to provide a sound platform to support all of our students in their learning and development.

In addition a number of our staff are past Westside students. They bring with them the values they learned here.

Secondly, because Westside is a school which creates a sense of belonging for its students. Perhaps one of the best indicators of this is that so many past students now send their own children to Westside.

For those parents, the memory of belonging at Westside still lingers. That is what they want now for their children. They want them to belong at Westside.

Lastly, because a key focus at Westside has always been on our student’s achievements. Those achievements are made in a Christian environment where each students gifts, skills, talents and creativity are nurtured so they can one day take their places in God’s world.

The foundation of Westside Christian College

rests on its Christian values and beliefs. This foundation may help students receive the care they need, feel a sense of belonging and experience a range of achievements.

The school size and family friendly atmosphere provide a great environment in which students can learn and grow. The College aims to assist students to develop their competance in a range of areas, while providing opportunities to learn through serving others so as to develop Christian character, care and compassion. Many students go on to tertiary study, while others pursue vocational educational pathways.

Prospective students and parents are invited to discover the benefits of a co-educational Pre-Prep to Year 12 school at the Westside Christian College’s Open Night at 5.00 –8.30 PM on Friday August 2 at its 65 Stuart Street, Goodna campus where Years 5–12 will be on display.

The Open Night will also provide information on Pre-Prep, and Junior Primary (Years P–4) programs, present the opportunity to see inside learning areas (for Years 4–12) and include student displays and demonstrations.

Handmade Expo Market is five years oldMikkie Finn’s was born from the desire to help locals buy affordable quality clothing. Back in 2009 my daughter was looking for a formal gown. Being the second eldest of five, money was tight and finding a dress within our budget (in Ipswich) was very difficult.

With the population of Ipswich and the amount of High Schools I thought it warranted a try for a Formal Shop in the area. So 12 months after the water climbed to four metres at my husband’s business at Bundamba, we decided to convert the office there into a shop and see how we went… and only four months after opening the doors in February 2012, my husband moved his business next door and I extended the shop to the full length of the industrial shed. The clothes had taken over!

I have over 100 Bridal Gowns in stock. Ranging from size 4 to 22. Some are brand new (ex shop stock), others have only been worn once. Then there’s the ex-hire gowns that sell pretty well because they are still in great shape and only cost from $80!

Thats my favourite part — selling a bride a beautiful gown that is within her budget. I also stock formal gowns, evening wear, and casual wear, for ladies or gents.

Opening Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 9am–4pm and 9am–1pm Saturdays.

Any consignment or queries please pop in or give me a call on 0400 691 592 or email [email protected]. We hope to see you soon at Mikkie Finn’s.

Furnishing your home

For the millions suffering from back pain at any given time, doctors have a surprising new suggestion for relief — your recliner. Seven out of 10 primary care physicians agree that sitting in a reclined position at home can help decrease back pain. The key to getting relief is elevating your legs. Eighty percent of doctors prefer for patients to sit with legs elevated up high and the back either partially or fully reclined.

So for those with back pain, reclining now means more than just comfort - reclining can also mean relief.

Since 1929, when the first La-Z-Boy recliner was patented, La-Z-Boy have been perfecting reclining comfort and are one of the most recognised names in furniture. You can rest assured that La-Z-Boy will be around for another 85 years and beyond.

2. Independent Reclining Action so you can recline without opening the footrest.

3. Adjustable Reclining Tension so you can customise the amount of effort it takes to recline the back of the chair.

4. Locking footrest which means your legs are fully supported at all times and the footrest does not sag when used.

5. Seat Tilt Ratchet Mechanism which means that you can adjust the seat and footrest pitch to 18 unique angles which means you can raise the front of the seat to elevate their feet more and create a customised comfort position

3 Minute Business & Money Tips

Business Succession. Many business owners who are looking

towards retirement are now asking us for advice on their future succession plans.  This can include having a staff buyout, passing your business to the next generation, or a sale. Talk to us about how your business can ready itself for sale, valuations, and the very beneficial capital gains tax concessions available.

Borrowing in your Super Fund.Changes to rules in recent years mean

people can now again borrow for real estate or shares in a self-managed super funds, and a few promoters are spruiking these structures. Be warned though - these structures do not suit everyone! However, in certain situations they can be useful. Seek advice before you enter such arrangements.

Family Trusts - Why?We get a lot of questions about family trusts.

They are useful in certain circumstances

because of the following factors:n Income flexibility: Discretionary trusts allow

income to be distributed differently between beneficiaries. This can minimise overall tax liabilities.

n Capital Gains Tax (CGT): Unlike a company, trusts can obtain the same CGT discounts and concessions as individuals

n Asset protection: If an asset, say the family farm, is held within a trust structure, it can be protected from marriage breakdowns or bankruptcy of individual family members, without affecting the family’s main asset.

However, there are time when a trust is not advisable and another structure is best for your circumstances.

Remember to always seek advice before leaping into a decision – it can save you a lot of money! Call us now on 07 3202 1222 if you wish to discuss these or any other tax topic.

Offer applies to Salary and Wages only. Valid until 31st October 2013.

Tax Time at G.J. Walsh & Co

We have a dedicated team who are committed to remaining up to date with all legislative changes and are ready to provide a professional and friendly service again this tax season.

With the end of financial year here, there are a few changes individuals should consider when preparing their income tax returns for the year ended 30 June 2013.

Firstly, the Personal Tax Rates have changed this year, with the tax free threshold increasing from $6,000 to $18,200, which means that taxpayers do not have to pay tax on the first $18,200 of their taxable income. However, the tax on taxable income between $37,001 - $80,000 has increased from 30c to 32.5c.

Small businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $2 million may be entitled to the new small business concession rules which include the instant asset write-off threshold which has increased from $1,000 to $6,500. Small businesses can claim an accelerated initial deduction for motor vehicles acquired in 2012-13 and subsequent years. For vehicles purchased for a cost of more than

$6,500, small businesses may be entitled to claim an initial deduction of $5,000 plus 15% of the balance purchase price.

Our purpose is to create total client satisfaction through our talented people, specialised expertise, and a personal approach that delivers results.

Their commitment has always been to offer the best solutions for our clients long term financial objectives and goals. To achieve that we have focused on solutions using quality comprehensive planning and thinking, including structures and strategies that we firmly believe set the right course for our clients and add true value into the future.

It is our aim to establish strong relationships with our clients, becoming an integral part of their business structure, adding value every step of the way through our proactive approach and driving their success.

Visit GJ Walsh and Co at the top of town at 213 Brisbane Street, Ipswich, phone 3812 3838 or visit our website www.gjwalsh.com.au

Tax time is upon us again and the team at G J Walsh & Co is ready to help clients take the pain out of managing their income tax requirements.

The end of the financial year is almost upon us again and in these tough economic conditions, it is time to start thinking about how to get the maximum refund from your tax return this year.

There have been a few important changes to the tax landscape this year. Firstly the tax free threshold has increased to $18,200. When you add in the low income tax offset this means you won’t pay any tax if your income is below $20,542. You may still have to lodge a tax return (if your income is below that level) if you have had tax withheld from your wage or salary – it is the only way you will get your money back.

Another important change this year is that the ATO will be paying all individual refunds electronically. So you will need to advise your bank account details to your tax agent or in your own return if you prepare it yourself.

For those people with private health insurance, the rebate is now subject to an income test so you need to be careful with those details. There is also an income test applied for the medical expenses offset.

Unless your spouse is an invalid or a carer (or you live in a remote area of Australia) you can no longer claim the spouse offset if your spouse was born after 1 July 1952.

If you are running a small business there may be a significant increase in the value of the assets you can write-off.

With all these changes why take

unnecessary risks in preparing your own return. See the friendly, trained staff at the Income Tax Professionals for a worry-free tax return with the best possible refund.

Simply bring in all your tax information: - Payment summaries from your employer(s), Government payments (incl Newstart – yes, it is taxable) and any pensions;- Any interest or other investment income; don’t forget those all-important receipts for your deductible expenses: uniforms, tools, work related vehicle usage etc. - Your bank details and, if applicable, your private health insurance statement

Your ITP tax consultant will sort it all out for you and take the hassle out of tax time for a very reasonable, tax-deductible fee. To make it completely painless, you can even pay nothing up-front and have the fee deducted from your refund.

ITP have a number of locations in the western suburbs including a new office at Redbank Plains shopping centre.

Call in to any of the offices for free advice about your tax affairs.

Locations are: Ipswich, 48A Nicholas St 3281 9360; Redbank Plains, Shop 3313B Level 3 Redbank Plains Shopping Centre 3818 7860; Goodna, Shop 6A St Ives Professional Centre Smith Rd 3818 0951.

From 1st July there will also be additional locations in Riverlink Shopping Centre and a second booth at Redbank Plains Shopping Centre near Coles.

V8 Supercar Driver Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom will host a Cars 2 movie screening at the Ipswich Tivoli Drive-In this Thursday 18 July ahead of the Coates Hire Ipswich 360. In the Cars 2 movie, the shiny red racer Lightning McQueen and his trusty sidekick Mater head off to compete in the World Grand Prix. Along the way they meet some interesting characters – including an Australian race car called Frosty – voiced by real life V8 Supercars Driver Mark ‘Frosty’ Winterbottom.

There is limited space available at the Tivoli, so arrive early to avoid disappointment.

Gates open from 4.00 pm, for a movie start time of 6.30 pm. Put the kids in the car and head on down, grab your snacks at the café and hear an interview with Mark Winterbottom before the movie.

This free evening of fun is brought to you by the Tivoli Drive-In and supported by the Ipswich City Council and V8 Supercars.

Queensland Raceway is paving the way for an exciting weekend of action-packed racing as we again play host to the V8 Supercars for the 2013 Coates Hire Ipswich 360.

The V8 Supercar Championships first raced into town more than a decade ago thanks to a partnership between Ipswich City Council, Events Queensland, Queensland Raceway and the V8 Supercars and it is one of the city’s biggest events of the year.

As well as welcoming thousands of spectators from across the south-east, it is a great opportunity for the Ipswich community to witness a slice of Queensland motorsport action and I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the drivers, teams and fans that have come to be part of the Ipswich 360.

This year is particularly exciting as the battle between team Holden and Ford has been expanded to also include Mercedes and Nissan but no matter whom you back, the Ipswich 360 is sure to be a great weekend for families, with plenty of entertainment on and off the track.

Congratulations to the organisers and sponsors for bringing the adrenalin-fuelled sport back to Queensland Raceway for another year.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK - 21-27 July

2013 marks 150 years since the Sisters of Mercy arrived by boat, sailing up the Bremer River, to establish the school. St Mary’s College has continued to provide a quality, holistic education to young women in the Mercy Tradition over the past 150 years. The College prides itself on providing a platform for girls to be active contributors to the world in which they live and work.

Our priority is to offer a holistic education that is values based and life-giving, to ensure that each student has the opportunity to achieve to her potential and be a woman of integrity. An education at St Mary’s College prepares young women to be active global citizens with the skills, confidence and resilience to live life to the full and make a difference in an ever

changing world. St Mary’s College provides a curriculum

that caters for all pathways from strongly academic to vocational education studies. An extensive co-curricular program enables the girls to actively participate in cultural and sporting activities.

St Mary’s College is well regarded for its unique caring and supporting environment. Our community focus and size, coupled with our Pastoral Care Program, provides greater opportunity to respond to the needs of each individual.

St Mary’s College is proud of its rich history and strong traditions. In Catholic Education Week we celebrate 150 years of Mercy Education and the contribution of St Mary’s College to education in the Ipswich area.

St Mary’s College - Celebrating 150 yearsSt Mary’s College celebrates 150 years of Catholic Education in Ipswich this year. As part of the celebrations, the College will host the launch of Catholic Education Week next week.

Catholic education – Making a difference

Queensland Governor Penelope Wensley will launch the week, and present awards to Catholic educators at a ceremony at St Mary’s College on 24 July. Catholic Education Week takes place from 21 to 27 July 2013, featuring a wide range of activities across the state.

This year’s theme ‘Making a Difference’ inspired by Jesus – reflects a key element of the philosophy behind Catholic education.

“We strive to make a difference in the lives of individuals and in the wider community,” said Pam Betts, Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education.

“We do this by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.

“That’s reflected by a range of activities in our schools during Catholic Education Week, in which we remind our students that we all have a responsibility to be active and useful citizens,” she said.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK

There is a strong emphasis on justice and service, especially towards the more marginalised groups in the Ipswich community. This Catholic understanding draws on its Marist and Jesuit charisms.

The College has a rich cultural setting as it draws its students from a variety of backgrounds including a significant number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Pasifika students. A carefully considered Master Plan has resulted in the construction of excellent learning facilities for a growing College community. In 2013 the College will construct a Trade Training Centre and a new Visual Arts Centre.

There is a vibrant learning culture evident at the College. This culture is led by a committed and creative College Leadership Team and is supported by a stable, hard-working and caring staff. There has been significant

thought given to the nature of the College’s middle management team so that the most positive academic and pastoral outcomes are sought for all students. The existence of such a professional staff has enabled the College to respond to the needs of students, with customised pathways and ‘niche’ curriculum offerings amongst other initiatives.

As part of its response to the needs of students, the College has adopted a whole school approach, stretching from the vision and mission of the College to the student behaviour support practices underpinned by the Responsible Thinking Process. This aim means to engage all members of the College community.

St Peter Claver College is an authentic Catholic school dedicated to working in partnership with families to enable all students to experience success in their learning.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK

Queensland’s newest Catholic primary school, at Springfield Lakes, is now enrolling for 2014.

Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School opened at the beginning of this year, with 68 students. It will grow over the coming years, eventually catering for more than 600 students from Prep to Year 6.

The four hectare site has been master-planned to provide high-quality, technologically-rich flexible learning facilities which provides a welcoming, safe and developmentally-appropriate environment for students. It is designed to serve the rapidly-growing areas of Springfield Lakes, New Beith and Greenbank.

Principal, Judith Seery, said Good Shepherd’s academic focus was personalised learning for each individual, to help children develop as confident, enthusiastic and effective learners.

“It is our vision to provide opportunities for all our children to fulfil their potential through a commitment to high standards and excellence within an engaging, broad and rich curriculum,” Ms Seery said.

“Our students are engaged by learning that develops and challenges them and excites their imagination.

“A walk through our classrooms shows children engaged in their learning through many and varied activities,” she said.

Ms Seery said that a 21st century education meant emphasis was still placed on the vital skills of literacy and numeracy, but with the

addition of a broader range of other skills. These are often referred to as life skills:

children growing up now need a variety of skills to be successful learners today.

“Learning environments in schools now provide a balance between the formal instruction of key curriculum areas (including sciences, history, the arts, physical education, literacy, numeracy) balanced with active engagement where children working alongside others, work collaboratively, problem solve and create,” Ms Seery said.

“In personalised learning, we don’t stop teaching the fundamentals – the foundations of literacy and numeracy; we also add more of the essential skills of life that all of us need as we live and grow and work in today’s society.

Parents wanting to secure a place for Prep in 2014 should be quick to lodge an application. Some vacancies also exist in other year levels.

Application information and materials can be accessed on the school’s website   www.goodshepherd.qld.edu.au

“This is an example of the way Council is working from Grandchester to Camira to engage Ipswich’s young people,” she said.

“We are open to suggestions from local young people for any activities they would like to see held within Ipswich.”

Cr Ireland said council already operated the Ipswich Youth Advisory Council and the Ipswich Indigenous Youth Advisory Councils (IIYAC) which had 28 members ranging in age from 12 to 17-years-old.

She said the Ipswich Youth Advisory Council had been founded in 2007 to give Ipswich youth a special forum in which they could express a wide variety of views and ideas about issues affecting them.

In 2012 the Ipswich Indigenous Youth Advisory Council was established to increase and better engage our Indigenous young people.

Division 10 Councillor David Pahlke said the Rosewood Youth Festival was specifically designed to reach out to young people in the Rosewood corridor.

“We hope this festival during the school holidays provided some fun for local young people in their own backyard.”

Cr Pahlke said the festival had given Ipswich’s young people the chance to enjoy live music and show off their dance, skate and music skills.

“It was a great day with participants enjoying the music, skating, activities, food and fun on offer. Young Life Australia partnered with council for the festival and we thank them for their contribution towards this event.”

Young Life Australia is a non-aligned Christian charity focussed on role modelling and mentoring young people of high school age, to build confidence, values and resilience.

Cr Pahlke said council was excited to be able to support local young people and services to develop and plan for the 2014 Rosewood Youth Festival.

“One of the exciting outcomes from this year’s festival was that several local young people came forward who wish to participate in planning the 2014 festival and make it bigger, better and more relevant for Ipswich’s young people.”Below: Councillors Sheila Ireland and David Pahlke try out the jumping castle with local youths.

Youth festival set to continue in RosewoodIpswich City Council Youth and Seniors Committee Chairperson Councillor Sheila Ireland said this was the second year of the festival in Rosewood and Council planned to continue with the event each year.

My ‘Eat Myself to Death’ Dishes

When Ipswich Life spoke to Masterchef’s Gary Mehigan recently, we couldn’t resist asking him if he HAD to eat himself to death with

food, what five dishes would he choose? Want to be a Top Fiver? Keep watching our

Facebook page for the callout and YOU could be in the next issue.

1. TrufflesI’m obsessed with truffles. Anything with truffle in it, I could eat myself to death with easily, it’s a no brainer.2. Roast Chicken dinner All good meals start with chicken. Call me old fashioned, but you can’t beat that as a meal. Crispy skin, parson’s nose… love it.3. Rottnest Island ScallopsThe best scallops on the planet. They are like plump marshmallows. Heavenly.4. Salted CaramelI can’t resist anything with salted caramel in it. Since I was a kid, I could eat it until I was physically sick. 5. TomatoesI know it sounds ridiculous, and way too healthy. Vine ripened tomatoes baked with olive oil, flaked salt and cracked pepper…heaven, just heaven.

Time to get out our pocket money… the rumours were true – Beyonce has announced a series of dates for Australia on her Mrs Carter World Tour. All the single ladies can put their hands up and sing at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre October 28 2013.

We know Johnny Depp (above) is a fabulous actor, but what’s he like when it comes to song writing? We’re about to find out. Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is recording an album of songs he wrote with Depp. Tyler hopes to release the album in 2014.

A lock of Mick Jagger’s hair (above) has sold at auction for a staggering $6000. It was sold by a former girlfriend of his, who met Jagger when he was still an unknown student at the London School of Economics. I’m not sure what the more curious question is here – why pay $6000 for a snip of hair? Or how did she have the hair in the first place?

Australian Icon Jimmy Barnes (below) is heading back on the road on his “Welcome to The Pleasure House” tour. He’ll be joined by daughters Mahalia and Eliza Jane. Barnes performs at the Ipswich civic centre August 7.

Singer and reality tv star, Jessica Simpson has given birth to her second son, Ace Knute (Ka-Nute) in early July. Her first son Maxwell was born in 2011.

Oprah’s reclaimed her throne as Forbe’s most ‘Powerful’ celebrity for 2012/13. Women faired very well on the list, taking up 6 of the top ten positions. Lady Gaga was named second most influential celebrity. Rounding out the top ten are: Steven Spielberg, Beyonce, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, Roger Federer, Justin Bieber and Ellen DeGeneres.

Canadians Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroger (Nickelback) have tied the knot earlier this month in France. Lavigne chose a black tulle gown for her goth-themed castle wedding.

The story of INXS is coming to our small screens as a mini series: “Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS”. The two part Channel 7 drama is expected to portray their rise to the top of the international charts. 2012 X factor winner Samantha Jade (below) has been cast as Kylie Minogue, Georgina Haig (Fringe, The Elephant Princess) as Paula Yates and Mallory Jansen (Howzat! Kerry Packer’s War) as Helena Christensen.

And after a couple of setbacks, it’s now full-steam ahead for Jurrasic Park 4 (in 3D). The original Jurrasic Park hit the big screen in 1993 and was followed by two sequels (1997 and 2002), so this upcoming sequel has been a long time coming. Director Colin Trevorrow has promised fans this next sequel will be better than the previous two: . “We are very aware of how much a certain generation especially cares about this movie and we talk about it all the time and really the conversation is: It’s not about us, it’s not about our careers, it’s how do we make something that can stand with the first one.” Fingers crossed it does. Jurrasic Park 4 is expected in cinemas in 2015.

In times of crisis when medical treatment is vital and evacuation may be needed the RAAF Health Services Wing can expect the call to pack up and go wherever medical specialists can provide the humanitarian assistance that saves lives.

Through its headquarters at RAAF Base Amberley, HSW provides expeditionary health support, aeromedical evacuation and aerospace medicine support. When not deployed, HSW units provide health support at their home bases.

While providing health services at home base is important it is the aeromedical evacuation (AME) role that is HSW’s forte, delivering the right health capability at the right place and at the right time – hence the Wing’s motto of Compassion, Skill and Courage.

With aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules and C-17A Globemaster III now certified for aeromedical evacuation, HSW medical staff can and do respond to emergency situations worldwide.

With the reorganisation of Combat Support Group, focused mainly on it expeditionary role, Health Services Wing takes on an enhanced responsibility for the aviation health component of the CSG mission. This includes training its medical and support staff and enabling effective deployments on humanitarian and other support missions

requiring expert medical assistance.Three squadrons and one training unit

make up the Wing: 3 Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, Nos 1 and 2 Expeditionary Health Squadrons, and Health Operational Conversion Unit. Although military in nature, HSW calls on Specialist Reserve doctors and medical professionals to augment its Base Medical Services, with some reservists deploying on exercises and operations.

No 23 Squadron, commanded by Wing Commander Simon Nickson, has just taken over the Base Firefighting assets as the first part of a major Air Force wide reorganisation and transformation aimed at improving combat support provided to flying squadrons. At the local level, more than 300 personnel along with base assets will be transferred to 23 Squadron’s in the coming months, as other sections such as mechanics, aircraft refuellers

and various support trades join the squadron. By 1 January 2014 this transition will be complete.

As an example, a number of the now 23 Squadron firefighters will soon deploy to the Shoalwater Bay Training Area near Rockhampton for the multinational exercise Talisman Saber. They have been seconded to No 382 Expeditionary Combat Support Squadron for the duration of the exercise.

WGCDR Nickson said that this dual role of 23 Squadron in maintaining base services at Amberley while providing people and assets to the expeditionary squadron for deployed operations is how the squadron will operate in future years.

“We see this as the most effective way to support Combat Support Group in its mission,” he said.

23 Squadron celebrated its 75th Anniversary last year, with remembrance ceremonies for squadron aircrews who flew during World War II, and is now looking forward to having increased influence on supporting air power in Australia and as part of deployed operations.

Wartime squadron to ‘run’ RAAF AmberleyA RAAF squadron that flew combat missions during World War II and later became a non-flying Air Force Reserve squadron will now be responsible for many of the base support functions that keep the Amberley air base up and running.

Air Force integrates its security assets

These new Air Force Security and Air Force Police musterings recognise the need for an updated approach to security operations at home and on deployed operations.

The changes also represent a significant change to Air Force security, establishing three new Security Force Squadrons based at RAAF Bases Amberley, Williamtown and Edinburgh. The ultimate aim is to achieve a highly enhanced capability across the whole spectrum of security.

In the first round of changes from July 4, airfield defence guards, military working dog handlers and security police will form the new squadrons, ultimately under a newly formed 95 Wing (from January 2014).Below Left: Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Geoff Brown (centre) with Commanding Officers of the new Security Force Squadrons.Below: Airfield Defence Guards, MWD Handlers and Air Force Police on parade.(Air Force Images)

The evolution of Air Force security forces in past years, with increased emphasis on air base and air power asset security, has led to the recent integration of security musterings

The engineers from the 7th Battalion Royal Australian Regiment Task Group have reduced the tactical infrastructure of FOB Hadrian. This included the removal of two M777A2 Howitzers airlifted to Kandahar Airfield by US Army CH-47 Chinooks along with containers of stores and equipment.

FOB Hadrian, which is 60km west of Tarin Kot, was ‘deconstructed’ in line with the Afghan National Security Force (ANSF) enduring plan for the province.

The ANSF operates independently in the area and now has the lead for security across the province.

Initially a Dutch base until their withdrawal in 2010, Australian Mentoring Teams worked out of FOB Hadrian training and patrolling with the 1st Kandak of the 4th Brigade, until it achieved operational independence in November 2012.

The base has been handed over in clean and sustainable condition, with only the base’s perimeter walls left to be deconstructed by contracted support.

Coalition forces are confident that the Afghan National Police are capable of conducting independent operations.

Recent insurgent attacks on Afghan Police checkpoints in the Deh Rawud and Shahid-e Hassas districts have been repelled by Afghan soldiers who are now employing complex

tactical manoeuvres such as clearing air space for artillery and mortar fire.Below: A US Army CH-24 Chinook helicopter prepares to lift a M777A2 Howitzer from its location at Forward Operating Base Hadrian.

One of The Beatles, John Lennon, reckoned that life was what happened when we’re busy making other plans. But sometimes it’s living that puts major plans on the backburner. Take retirement saving. Most people understand that they’ll need to replace around 70 per cent of their average earnings in retirement. An average couple needs in the order of $1 million to live comfortably for more than twenty years of not working. Given the size of this goal, you’d expect a certain focus on retirement savings among working people. But in a survey we did at Yellow Brick Road during June, we found that saving for retirement ranked 12th in priorities out of 16 financial issues.

The most important issue for 25-49 year olds was general cost of living, followed (in order) by utility bills, mortgage repayments, credit cards and the cost of raising children. Other issues greater than saving for

retirement were medical bills, saving for a

holiday, personal loans, rent/board,

vehicle finance, insurance costs

and paying for renovations.

So, retirement savings isn’t really ignored, it’s

just that ‘life’ gets in the way.

If you’re employed, your employer must put aside 9.25 per cent of your wages into a superannuation fund. So you’re already saving. But it’s what you do with this superannuation that makes the difference.

Start by focusing. Tell yourself: “it’s my money.” Secondly, ensure your fund is not charging too much in fees. You shouldn’t pay more than 1 per cent per annum to have your savings managed (yet many do). The difference between 1 per cent and 2 per cent of a $100,000 nest egg is $1000. This is money you should keep in your own savings where it can compound.

Thirdly, avoid trading-off potential returns in order to have ‘risk free’ savings. The difference between a ‘conservative’ option in a super fund and a ‘growth’ option can be the difference between earning 4 per cent and 9 per cent. On a $100,000 nest egg, that’s a difference of $5000 each year. Young people especially should not be too conservative in their investment choices.

As with all important investments, there are no magic solutions with superannuation. The point I make is that your goals come closer to reality when you start to focus and to pay attention. Not everyone can throw more money into their super when life is getting in the way. But anyone can take an interest, compare funds and make good decisions.

Persia RisingBy Mark Langford

Since September 11, 2001 there has been blood in the water. The ensuing decade has brought little solace or healing to our wounds. Now, Persia Rising brings you an unflinching plunge into the next major attack upon the United States of America, our allies, and our way of life, set to occur on the anniversary of 9/11. A psychopath, Ajay Majumbar, born to a moderate Muslim family in rural Texas, walks a terrible path toward murder and destruction as he facilitates the most horrendous terror attacks. The American and NATO enemies in Iran, China, and Russia conspire to eradicate the Western powers by seizing the opportunity granted by Ajay’s hatred and sadistic desires.

DEFENC EGIVEAWAYS

Lancaster Men By Peter Rees

More than 10,000 Australians served with Bomber Command, a band of elite flyers who undertook some of the most dangerous operations of World War II. They flew raid after raid over France and Germany knowing that the odds were against them. Nearly 3500 died in the air. Their bravery in extreme circumstances has barely been recognised.Peter Rees traces the achievements of these young aviators. He tells their hair-raising stories of battle action and life on the ground. And he recounts how, when they returned to Australia, they were greeted as Jap dodgers and accused of ‘hiding in England while we were doing it tough’.(Allen & Unwin)

Up 7.6 per cent compared to the previous financial year, Mazda also posted record sales in the six months to 30 June, 2013, with 52,287 new vehicles finding homes.

With a healthy 9.1 per cent share, Mazda remains second in the market Year-To-Date (YTD) and holds its place as the leading full-line importer.

Mazda recorded 9,567 new vehicles sales in June, with CX-5 and Mazda3 leading the way.

CX-5 set a new benchmark in June with 2,036 sales to record a best-ever SUV result and consolidate its position as the country’s number one SUV.

Not only was this a record for CX-5 but it was the first time that it exceeded 2,000 sales in a calendar month. With over 10,000 sales YTD, Mazda CX-5 is now over 2000 units ahead of its closest rival.

Mazda3 had one of its best months of the year selling 3,672 cars in June, maintaining its place as one of Australia’s most popular cars.

BT-50 enjoyed 1,332 sales for a record June tally and its second-best ever monthly result while the ever-popular Mazda2 sold 1,371 to

continue leading the small car segment. In support was the stylish All-New Mazda6

with 796 June sales, contributing to Mazda’s YTD passenger car sales tally of 32,866.

Mazda Australia’s managing director, Martin Benders said: “Although very pleased with the records set in the first half of 2013, we believe further opportunities lie ahead for Mazda. A fantastic new Mazda3 driveaway price from $19,990 was launched from 1 July and momentum continues to build on Mazda6, CX-5 and BT-50. Our professional Dealer network is well geared to capitalise on these opportunities in the second half of the year as we prepare for arguably our most important launch ever, the All-New Mazda3 in early 2014.”

The BMW Group is set to play a ground-breaking role in shaping personal mobility at premium level in the future.

This vision is about to become reality: the BMW i3, the first series-produced model from the new brand, offers customers zero-emission mobility in a premium car package.

The BMW i3 is the world’s first premium car designed from the ground up to be powered by an electric drive system. The result is hallmark BMW driving pleasure in undiluted form, delivered with zero emissions and an engaging intensity unmatched by any electrically powered vehicle. Like the car’s unique vehicle architecture – based around the LifeDrive structure and its carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell – the electric motor, power electronics and high-voltage lithium-ion battery have been developed and manufactured independently by the BMW Group under its BMW eDrive programme. This ensures that BMW’s time-honoured Sheer Driving Pleasure is also a central feature of the BMW i brand’s first

electrically powered car. Also playing their part here are the driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW Connected Drive and 360° ELECTRIC designed specifically for the BMW i3. Intelligent integration of these features allows them to accentuate the premium experience of all-electric mobility in urban environments.

Toyota named ‘Best Global Green Brand’More than 10,000 consumers surveyed around the world recognised Toyota for committing to sustainable environmental leadership and having invested in innovative vehicles such as the pioneering Toyota Prius. They also appreciated the company’s various programs designed to reduce greenhouse emissions, water and energy consumption throughout its operations. The 2013 Best Global Green Brands report, compiled by international brand consultancy Interbrand, determines the gap between a company’s environmental performances and its actual environmental practices. Sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrid vehicles worldwide now stand at 5.22 million, resulting in an estimated reduction of some 35 million tonnes of CO2.

Globally, Toyota is currently in the process of a product launch cycle that will introduce new or updated hybrid models. Australian customers can choose from eight Toyota and Lexus hybrid models: the locally built Camry Hybrid and the fully imported Prius, Prius c, Prius v and Lexus CT 200h, GS 450h, RX 450h and LS 600h.

In 2015 Toyota plans to commercialise its hydrogen fuel-cell hybrid vehicle, featuring next-generation powertrain technology and approaching what the company considers the ultimate eco-car. The company’s commitment towards

sustainable operations and environmental leadership also permeates throughout the entire product life cycle. Last month, Toyota was named the world’s most valuable automotive brand in the BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands 2013 report.

The cutting edge capabilities of Auto Park Assist make it one of the most advanced systems in VF Commodore’s formidable new armoury.

Like Holden’s new MyLink infotainment system, Auto Park Assist is included as standard  across the VF range so every buyer can appreciate the benefits of this efficient parking assistant.

Auto Park Assist takes the guesswork out of reversing into tight spots.  It’s a great tool for drivers who may be hesitant about trying to squeeze into a narrow slot or who are reluctant to attempt challenging parking manoeuvres.

Using ultrasonic sensors, Auto Park Assist accurately detects viable parking spaces, determines approach angles and neatly parks the vehicle by taking over the steering.

The driver manages throttle, braking and transmission but effectively the vehicle steers itself into any suitable reverse parallel or reverse right angle (90-degree, or perpendicular) parking space.

The colour Head-Up Display projects important cluster information on the windscreen, allowing the driver to view it without looking away from the road. The transparent, coloured display (Calais V and SS V Redline) features four screens, selectable by the driver, which show information including digital speedometer, tachometer, infotainment

and turn by turn navigation. The HUD system uses a series of mirrors to

display the information on a specific high-technology windscreen. The HUD-enabled windscreen incorporates wedge lamination to provide excellent optic focus for the delivery of clear, sharp images.

Drivers can adjust the brightness and location of the image, or turn it off via a switch located next to the headlamp control.

This super-convenient ‘keyless’ feature allows drivers to unlock, start and lock the car simply by carrying the sensor key with them.

On approach, integrated antennas in the vehicle body identify a radio pulse generated by the key fob.  When the button on the door handle is pressed, the door will automatically unlock to allow access.

When the ignition button (located to the left of the instrument cluster) is pushed, the driver’s key is authenticated. The vehicle immobiliser and electronic steering column lock are automatically released so that the engine can start.

VF Commodore sedans and Sportwagons are equipped with a rear seat belt indicator feature that notifies the driver, via the Driver Information Display in the instrument cluster, about the status of the rear seat belts.
