IPC training

As part of training sessions targeting health workers in isolation and triage centres in Aswani, UNICEF Libya organised an Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) training session to build the health care’s capacity.

SSome of the topics covered at the training session held on 13 June 2021 included principles and practices of hand hygiene in community and health care settings with a mini work shop on the same, social distancing and sneezing and coughing etiquette, PPEs and detailed discussion and training on masks, and discussions on IPC in the Covid-19 context.

• Ajdabiya IDP CAMP

2210 internally displaced families 991 persons, (322 women and 205 men) among them 464 children (243 female, and 221 male) benefitted from accessibility to adequate water in Ajdabiya IDP camp. Ajdabiya IDP camp.

The sessions been attended by health workers from four centres - Aswani medical services, Al Maya Covid-19 triage Centre, Aswani Covid-19 isolation centre, and Al Azizya CAzizya Covid-19 triage centre. 18 care givers (12 male and six female), participated in and benefitted from the interactive lectures and workshops.

The action came thorough UNICEFs response to the urgent need of safe and adequate water supply and was done through the installation of a collapsible water tank by Implementing Partner Libyan Society for National Reconciliation and Charity Works (LSO) to ensure accessibility to adequate safe water for the internally displaced families in the camp.

• Al Helal (Arryaidhia) IDP CAMP - Benghazi

235 interna235 internally displaced families 1115 persons, (322 women, 205 men and 569 children) benefitted from installation of Tarpaulin to reinforce the roof of toilets. This intervention aims to improve access to safe WASH facilities and living conditions in the camp the installation of a tarpaulin by Implementing Partner Libyan Society for National Reconciliation and Charity Works (LSO).

• Distribution Hand Sanitizers Stands to water institutions and health centres

324 hand sanitizers dispensers were distributed and being used by staff and visitors to water institutions including Ministry of Water Resources-MoWR, Mane Made River Project MMRP, General Company for Water and Wastewater-GCWW and, General Desalination Company -GDC.AdAdditionally, 324 sanitizers were distributed to the health and vaccination centers to ensure safety of staff and people at the east, west and south of the country.

Thanks to the support provided by the European Union in Libya, in cooperation with the National Center for Disease Control, the World Health Organization/Libya office started on 13 June a five-day online training program.

The program aims to build capacity and raise aThe program aims to build capacity and raise awareness for health care workers, especially health workers in the field of infection control and prevention in Triage and isolation centers for COVID_19, within the framework of efforts to prevent and control the transmission of infection with Covid_19.

More More than 34 medical staff involved in infection control and control in isolation and Triage centers for Covid_19 patients in a number of health institutions in eastern, western and southern Libya are participating in this training.

In May, World Health Organization recruited 9 Infection prevention and control officers across the country, to implement appropriate IPC measures at healthcare facilities designated for either treat confirmed COVID-19 cases and quarantine facilities hosting suspect COVID-19, and in order to address lack or limited IPC knowledge and implementation gaps WHO conducted Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Assessment Framework tool (IPCAF) to 28 governmental and 1 private COVID-19 isolaisolation and Triage centers. The targeted Isolation and triage centers across the country are recognized as the main health facilities serving suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases, This result will be used as baseline data to measure progress in the coming months.

The training program focuses on infection control measures and control of COVID-19 cases, and experts from the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office participate in its implementation. World Health Organization (Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office)DDr. Asma Al-Mahdi, a pediatrician in the isolation department of Traghen Teaching Hospital: “I was amazed at the effectiveness of this workshop, we were able to obtain advanced skills on how to build the basics of infection control for Covid_19 in every hospital and isolation unit, and how to communicate between unit, and how to communicate between teams specialized in infection control and follow Guidelines approved by the World Health Organization.

The World Health Organization in Libya continues to support the health services system in system in western, eastern and southeastern Libya. During During the past two months, WHO received a batch of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which included 45,302 items of various types of equipment and suppsupplies, and in coordination with the ministry of health, these supplies were delivered to Tripoli, AL Jamail, Zawara, Benghazi Medical Center, National Center for Disease control central public laboratory, Al Shwairif rural hospital, and Emergency center and other 6 districts across the country to support Healthcare workers, Vaccination center and laboratory technicians to respond to the COVID19 pandemic.

Al-Kufra

• As end-of-project activity under ECHO funding, PPE and medical equipment are donated to the Department of Health Services

•• PUI will support the vaccination campaign starting from July, an initial workshop will take place to train the support team with the participation of DHS on vaccine management and cold chain, vaccine sessions, organization, IPC, AEFI, HIS, communication)

In the districts of Al Bayda, Al-Kufra and Benghazi will be implemented cascade training on IPC in the coming months.

During the past two months; May and June 2021, UNHCR distributed UNHCR distributed Hygiene Kits (HKs) and PPEs for asylum seekers, refugees and IDPs in response to COVID-19. UNHCR distribute in its Community-Day Centre (CDC) in Tripoli, in various detention centers in Libya, for IDPs living in camps and urban. During May, UNHCR distributed the total of 14,600 face masks, 502 male HKs, 269 female HKs, and 626 hand soap bars.

In June, UNHCR distributed the total of 1,827 male HKs, 1,271 female HKs and 10,265 hand soap bars. UNHCR have also distributed 4000 face masks for its persons of concern. UNHCR also supported the Libyan authorities with PPEs, 500 face masks were made available for the Libyan Coast Guard to be distributed for survivors from sea rescue/returns operations. Another 500 face masks were provided to the GACS-Moil (General Department for Coastal Security).

In In total: 19,600 face masks; 2,329 Male HKs, 1,340 Female HKs, hand soap bars 10,891.

IPC Training, Nalut

InfecInfection Prevention and Control training provided as part of the COVID-19 testing and capacity building project funded by GIZ. The training included the infection transmission, common clinical presentation of patients with the disease and standard and enhanced safety measures to reduce the risk of transmission. The training targeted 13 nurses (10 females and 3 males) from Nalut, Tiji and Kabaw isolation centers.

Printing of IPC guidelines, Tripoli

IMC printed 75 copies of the IPC guidelines produced by the Scientific Consultancy Committee for Coronavirus Pandemic. The design of the guideline was improved by IMC, and it will be distributed to three supported facilities in July, including Nalut Hospital, Garaboulli Hospital and Zliten Hospital.

As paAs part of GIZ’s support for COVID-19 testing and treatment, and through the Municipality Emergency Committees in the respective municipalities, a total of 3,240 COVID-19 Infection Prevention and Control Guidelines were distributed in 18 municipalities.

Hygiene promotion and Covid-19 awareness campaign

TTo strengthen the response for COVID-19 pandemic and other contagious diseases, IOM Libya in coordination with relevant national entities, facilitated five hygiene promotion and COVID-19 awareness-raising sessions in three (3) detention centres (Batin Aljabel/Tiji, Abusalim and Ain Zara) and two (2) shelters (Surbana 1 and 2 and Al Krimya 1 and 2) for 1,120 migrants (990 male, 86 female, 35 minor male, 16 minor female, 24 children) and 57 adult male DC staff. The campaign conducted by a local NGlocal NGO, Kafaa Development Foundation. During the awareness sessions, PPE kits were distributed to all the migrants and detention centre staff, wall posters fixed at a strategic location inside the detention centres, and COVID-19 wareness leaflets distributed to the participants.

Routine fumigations, cleaning, sterilisation and disinfection activities

IOM Libya also suppoIOM Libya also supported the national authorities to implement preventive measures and to improve minimum living standards for vulnerable migrants through facilitating routine fumigations, cleaning, sterilisation and disinfection activities in facilities where migrants are present which includes disembarkation points, ships/boats used for search and rescue, health facilities and detention centres. During the reporting period IOM facilitated 115 such activities.

Provision and distribution of PPEs

In May, IOM distributed 1,068 lifesaving equipment and materials at disembarkation points. Those properties for the utilisation of GACS and LCG.In mid-June, IOM In mid-June, IOM distributed PPE materials, i.e. 10,000 Surgical face masks, 2,412 Surgical hand gloves, 2700 Hand sanitiser gel, 150 protective suits, 120 pcs of disinfectant, and 150 pcs of eye goggles. The donees were the DCIM and the sea rescue department of the safety authority.

WASH improvement, rehabilitation /services at DCs

IOM iniIOM initiated the implementation of a set of rehabilitation works at Tarik Al-sika DC in May. IOM handed over the facility to the contractor who began the WASH rehabilitation work. The rehabilitation is estimated to take 14 weeks.Installation of 1.5HP submersible water pump at Abu Issa DC.

Installation of isolation units in detention centres

In its suppoIn its support to Libyan authorities to respond and prevent the spread of COVID-19 in detention centers, IOM is supporting the Libyan government to install six (6) isolation units at Ganfouda DC (2), Mabani (2 units) and Ain Zara DC (2). In each location, the isolation units will be provided separated spaces for women and men. By the end of the reporting period, the Installation work at Mabini and Ganfouda DCs were near completion, while at Ain Zara DC this will start and end in the next reporeporting period. IOM also rehabilitated a medical clinic at Ganfouda DC. The scope of the work also included WASH rehabilitation of the facility.

IPC training

IOM Libya prIOM Libya provided a total of 21 IPC training and trained 339 health professionals working at DCs, DPs and public health facilities in 2020. This year, in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Department for Combating Illegal Immigration (DCIM), IOM has revised and scaled up the training packages to further address the training needs gap in different settings.On 6-On 6-10 June, IOM conducted a capaticy building training in Benghazhi for 14 laboratory technicians on PCR testing and IPC in laboratory settings.On 12-17 June and 19-24 June, IOM conducted two rounds of six-day intensive course in Tripoli for a total of 28 healthcare workers on IPC and ICU management of COVID-19 cases.

Southern Libya

1188 (172 female and 16 male) education staff were reached with information campaigns on basic IPC protocols to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection and to promote correct behaviours, especially hand washing, as well as on protocols for safe re-opening of schools in June. In addition, seven-targeted schools received the necessary materials (thermometers, "stand here" signs, cleaning materials, etc.) to ensure the implementation of these safe re-opening protocols. In addition, graffiti wiwith key messages on hygiene and infection prevention and control were painted in these seven-targeted schools.

18 (9 male and 9 female) health staff were sensitized through information campaigns on the correct use of personal protective equipment during the fourth and final round of distribution of PPE kits in the seven targeted health facilities. A total of 3,332 PPE kits were distributed, 833 per round, each containing 50 masks, 50 gloves, and 1 bottle of 100ml hand sanitizer.

112 handwashing stations were installed around Sebha, in 12 different Muhallas, in order to reach the largest part of the population, i.e., 60,000 people, at different locations (near schools, social event halls, sports clubs, parks, mosques, etc.). Each handwashing station is equipped with IEC material containing interpersonal communication messages, 4 taps, a 5000 litre tank, 4 soap dispensers, connected to the Libyan water and wastewater network and supported by a pump and a solar installation wiwith solar panels, batteries, inverters, water sensors, etc. to ensure the recharging and sustainability of the station. 5,039 people received 990 hygiene kits under the CERF grant. These family hygiene kits were designed according to the WASH cluster guidelines. Each family kit is designed to last at least one month for a family of five members and contains 18 items (such as female sanitary towels, toosanitary towels, toothpaste, shampoo, washing powder, soap, etc.). Similarly, under the SDC grant, 275 family hygiene kits were distributed to the neediest families, following analysis based on the individual protection approach with each of them. In addition, 159 COVID-19 kits and 50 fikits and 50 first aid kits were distributed using the same approach. Similarly, the COVID-19 kits were designed according to the WASH cluster guidelines. Each COVID-19 kit is designed to last at least one month for a family of five and consists of 4 items (including disinfectant bleach, medical masks, gloves, hand sanitizer). The first aid kit consists of 10 items (plasters, surgical tape, all-purpose gauze, scissors, thermometer, antibacterial wipes, etc.).
