Geographic Area Served:

Northern and North Central Alberta from the NWT border to Red Deer.

Meetings:

Five meetings were held on the second Wednesday of roughly every second month, excluding

July and August. November scheduled meeting was canceled due to unexpected issues,

unfortunately delaying selection of the new Executive for 2018. Each meeting included an

educational hour followed by the business meeting.

Education topics and presenters:

IPAC NA continues to support the strategic goal for education with an emphasis on dynamic

education topics impacting our practice across the continuum of care.

IPAC-NA Infection Prevention and Control Northern Alberta A Chapter of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) - Canada

Prepared by Tiffany Herrick, President IPAC NA. Dec 2017 & updated Jan 2018

January 11, 2017: Public Health inspection of Personal Services. Presented by

Thomas Cheung, EPH.

March 8, 2017: EMS – New Recruits and IPC Orientation (Pre-hospital care).

Presented by Justyna Augustyn, ICP.

May 11, 2017: Fire Code – an IPC response to the Ft. McMurray Fire. Presented

by Kimberly A. Miller, ICP.

June 14, 2017: IPAC NA members networking September 13, 2017 Highlights of IPAC National Conference – panel presentations by members who attended national conference. November 8, 2017: meeting cancelled.

Highlights:

Our chapter continues to use Microsoft Lync for meetings to allow for greater

participation of our membership from both local and broader geographical areas.

Meeting attendance has remained steady at ~ 25-30% of our membership.

Although IPAC NA continues to promote the strategic goal of continued membership

and engagement at our chapter meetings, the chapter continues to be challenged by a

decrease in membership; with a drop of ~ 10% this year.

Seven members attended the IPAC National conference in PEI. Funding enabled the

IPAC NA President and several members to attend and participate!

IPAC NA continues to promote Certification and financially reimbursed one member

upon successful completion of their CIC exam.

Three Executive team meetings were held this year in addition to regular member

meetings. Despite some unexpected events (our secretary moved out of IPAC in June;

our President had a medical leave; our Treasurer had a 3 month education leave) our

small Executive core remains committed and works hard to support IPAC and IPAC NA).

Extensive discussion on hosting a full-day IPAC education day next fall has occurred

several times. This would be an opportunity to offer continuing education and a fund-

raiser. A call-out for member volunteers to organize an education day had delayed

response (Jan. 2018 saw 7 members volunteer). IPAC NA members have offered our

sister chapter IPAC SA any assistance they might need as they host the 2018 National

Conference.

Our fiscal position is such that without a fundraising event, our chapter will not be able

to offer financial support for continuing education in the near future, in the same

manner as we have been.

Highlights The chapter hosted another successful annual education conference attended by healthcare providers and support staff from across the province with representation in each sector. The chapter also provided a member education day coupled with the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The chapter has continued to focus its efforts to retain, diversify, and increase membership. To this end, the chapter has reminded existing members of the available funds for education, advertised the available funding to potential members, funded six members to attend a two-day CSA Infection Control and Construction course, and renewed our online APIC Manual access for members. We also plan to have a ‘Bring a New Member’ contest in 2018, where existing members will recruit new members – the new members will be entered in a draw to win a free membership in the following year and the recruiting member will receive a gift card. Several of the objectives to meet the chapter’s strategic goals/objectives are no longer attainable due to lack of human resources. Jennifer Regier MSN RN CIC Chapter President

IPAC Simcoe Muskoka (SM) had 36 members during the 2017 year. Due to the wide area covered by Simcoe Muskoka, we hosted four chapter meetings and five executive meetings which were all available by teleconference, in-person and webinar. Each chapter meeting involved an education session. The education sessions included topics:

1 – Feb 10, 2017 - Critically Appraising Research Literature – Heather Candon

2 – May12, 2017 – CPE - Kim Baker from William Osler Health System 3 – August 18, 2017 – Teacher, Teacher, Can you Teach Me? Becoming better Educators – Presented

4 – Nov17, 2017 – Public Health IPAC Inspections – Jenee Wallace

IPAC SM members are primarily from the acute care and public health sector with representation from Prehospital care, community, long-term care and industry.

IPAC SM continues to focus on the strategic plan of the chapter that was developed in 2015 and last reviewed November 2017. One of the major focuses is increasing membership. During the year, the Terms of Reference were reviewed, updated and approved at the IPAC Canada board meeting in June 2017.

. We participated as a host site with IPAC GTA in the CIC prep sessions during the fall of 2017. Six members participated in the session with positive feedback.

IPAC SM received the 2nd place award at the National Conference (2017) for increase in membership. The chapter was provided 1 free membership for the 2018 year to iPAC Canada. This award was won by Lana Whittaker.

Initial discussions are underway for the next education session to be hosted in 2018. Different strategies have been investigated to increase membership, attendance and participation at the chapter level – Chapter and Executive members. IPAC-SM has created an information package for new members with passwords and chapter information encouraging use of the multiple resources that are available. Plans are also underway to enhance the social media presence of the chapter

Our members are primarily nurses, medical laboratory technologists, public health nurse/inspectors, epidemiologists and dental workers working in a wide array of settings from emergency services, long term care, acute care, dental, community and public health. Meetings Our chapter met four times this year. Our meetings focused on education and condensed business portion. Meeting times changed based on member survey feedback which has improved meeting attendance. Educational topics included reprocessing, AROs, communication strategies, and, influenza planning. Highlights 2017 was a great year for IPAC PANA as our little chapter was busy with many activities and the main highlight was receiving the 3M Chapter Achievement Award for the second time. We are so happy that our small but mighty chapter could achieve this coveted chapter award. The 3M award was used in multiple ways: (1) speaker sponsorship of Nancy Mulroney facilitating a session on Communication Diversity at our Chapter Summer Social (2) subsidizing our November Evening Educational event on Antimicrobial Awareness and (3) CIC support of our fall study group. Two additional highlights were our educational events collaborating with local stakeholders and industry. On May 4, 2017 we held “Invictus: Learn from the IPAC Vets”, a collaborative endeavor by IPAC PANA and Peel Public Health. Our keynote speaker was Michael Burns Chief Executive Officer, 2017 Invictus Games and expert Dr. Jennie Johnstone, Public Health Ontario (PHO) who built on the IPAC theme in the military setting, one that normally is not considered but has similar IPAC challenges and outbreaks with its own specificities. Additional IPAC education was provided for Emergency services, public health, acute and LTC settings. It was well attended, highly successful with 110 attendees, 14 vendor sponsorships and positive participant feedback. This event also provided opportunity to increase industry sponsorship (Strategic plan 3.4.2) which led to a collaboration with industry (Clorox) for our second educational event on November 14th, 2017 “Building Awareness in Antimicrobial Stewardship”. It coincided with National Antimicrobial Stewardship week. Bradley Langford (PHO) and Dr. Nick Daneman (Sunnybrook Hospital) educated our members and other local stakeholders on the status and value of antimicrobial stewardship in acute. LTC and community settings. Our members are active in many ways. We have a strong engaged executive team. Anne Augustin is our regional council representative and is on the education committee planning the 2018 IPAC Canada conference. Our member engagement initiative to grow our chapter (Strategic plan 3.1.2) includes reaching out to new members to inform of chapter activities. The chapter supports and mentors our members to obtain their CIC designation. In the fall 2017,

IPAC GTA CHAT sessions continue to be well attended. Many sessions are now including an educational presentation from a local stakeholder regarding an IPAC issue or topic. IPAC Chat sessions continue to provide networking opportunities and often include participation from those who might not always be able to participate in face-to-face full day chapter activities. IPAC Chat Sessions were held (1 hour facilitated teleconference/online networking sessions): February 3, 2017 March 15, 2017 May 17, 2017 Sept 13, 2017 Nov 15, 2017 The two IPAC GTA CHAT sessions that were most successful and well attended included a presentation from Brad Langford and Valerie Leung reviewed Ontario’s Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) Landscape Survey on May 17th; and the session on November 15th received excellent feedback with members wanting a similar session to review “Hot Topics in IPAC Literature” on an annual basis moving forward, presented by Barley Chironda. Networking committee has worked hard to collaborate and offer two IPAC GTA Buzz Newsletters this fiscal year. The sections include a hot topic, CIC study questions, job posts, meet the local IPAC team etc. This is now being tracked using Mail Chimp to review clicks and access. Social events have been organized after face to face Chapter meetings, great opportunity to network. Highlights IPAC GTA has new funding available for members who have passed their first CIC exam! (2017 IPAC CANADA CIC Award) A strategic planning session was held in January of 2017 and 2018 and all chapter members were invited to participate and contribute to the discussions, with focus on alignment with IPAC-Canada’s strategic plan. IPAC Ottawa Region (IPAC OR) has a membership base of approximately 90 members, with representation from hospitals, long-term care, community, government (provincial and federal), military, pre-hospital, midwives and public health units.

Meetings

The membership meets five times a year, and IPAC OR uses a blended approach: Adobe Connect platform, and face to face for meetings. The IPAC OR executive committed to extending the invitation for chapter meeting education sessions to chapters across Ontario, assuming the topic would be of provincial interest. IPAC OR held a fall education evening, which brought together stakeholders interested in hearing about Clostridium difficile. Dr. Longtin and Dr. Johnstone spoke about their research into C diff carriers with discussions and dialogue continuing well after the sessions was over.

Highlights

In the fall of 2017, IPAC OR started their second CIC study group, which consists of eight sessions addressing the CBIC outline and additional topics that members have identified as requiring support. At the December meeting, IPAC OR held a pinning ceremony, recognizing six members who successfully obtained their Certified in Infection Control (CIC) designation.

IPAC OR continues to support members with financial assistance for conferences or successfully challenging the CIC or Self- Achievement Recertification Examination (SARE). The chapter supported three members and the president to attend the IPAC Canada conference and reimbursed three members who successfully challenged their CIC.

The success of the chapter is directly related to the enthusiasm and active participation from the membership, which often continues outside of the designated chapter meetings.

It spans 44% of the province's total geography, yet comprises only 4% of its population. The region is home to four cities where population exceeds 40,000: Greater Sudbury, Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay. However, more than half of Northeastern Ontario residents live in smaller centers. Membership IPAC NEO members represent a variety of practice settings: acute and long term care, community and public health, first response, government and industry. The chapter continues to struggle with declining membership. Meetings In 2017, IPAC NEO held two chapter meetings and a 1 ½ day conference. Chapter meetings are hosted in-person at four major centres while simultaneously offering a webinar session for those who are unable to attend in person. The in-person component facilitates networking among members. An educational component was included in both 2017 chapter meetings:

• April meeting: Ontario Antimicrobial Stewardship Landscape Survey. Presented by Valerie Leung, Bradley Langford and Julie HC Wu, Public Health Ontario. A total of 28 persons attended.

• December meeting: New Technologies in Environmental Cleaning: A Review of No-touch Disinfection, New Surface Components and Coatings on Surfaces. Presented by Jim Gauthier, MLT, CIC, Senior Clinical Advisor, Infection Prevention for Diversey Inc. A total of 22 persons attended.

Highlights A chapter education conference was held September 27-28 in Greater Sudbury. The event, titled “If I had a Nickel…preparing for and responding to existing and emerging threats” attracted approximately 70 local and regional participants. Guest speakers representing IPAC Canada, Public Health Ontario (PHO), Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Public Services Health and Safety Association (PSHSA) delivered sessions on the following topics: IPAC lapses in community settings; organization risk assessments; occupational dermatitis; legionella; CPE and patient engagement. In developing the conference agenda, the planning committee gave consideration to the fact that most ICPs in Northeastern Ontario have multiple roles and responsibilities. IPAC NEO continues to focus on its strategic plan. Several chapter members are active participants in broader IPAC Canada activities such as the Mentorship Program and Audit Toolkit project. Our chapter will be the host of the 2019 Ecolab Poster Contest. Financially, the chapter remains healthy.

Geographic Area Served: The chapter represent the Province of Québec but most of the members are in the Montreal region , Montérégie and Laval. Membership: Most of the members come from Infection Prevention and Control domain, nurses or physicians and work in hospitals, rehabilitation and Long term care facilities. Most of the institutions have been merged into integrated centers, CIUSSS (Centre intégré universitaire de santé et services sociaux) and CISSS (Centre intégré de santé et services sociaux). Most of the members work in English-speaking institutions. Meetings: The executive had three teleconferences to try to revitalize the chapter. Due to the reorganization of the health care system, many challenges and barriers prevented the executive to achieve all objectives for the year. Highlights: Members of PCI Montreal are still on provincial committees like la Table Nationale de PCI, the CINQ committee. The chapter met once in December for the General Assembly. The name of the chapter was changed to PCI Qc and a new executive was formed. We elected a president-elect, treasurer/membership, secretary, education, webmaster, and Standards and Guidelines representative. We also had two presentations that day. One on the new Health ministry‘s “cadre de référence en PCI” by Madeleine Tremblay who just retired from her ministry position in IPAC and one on the” Hybrid room : challenges in IPAC” from our McGill University Health Center colleague, Ramona Rodrigues. The challenges remain: the language barrier; the increase of membership fees not supported anymore by most of the institutions; and the accredited webinars already offered online by our local Public Health and other public agencies.
