r~ I 01
Ola e Valle HISTORY Craig, Lisa, Lauren and Sarah are the family behind Stone Bridge Wines, a boutique South Australian winery currently cm~hing 100 tonnes of premium fruit from their own vineyards and select parcels from 30-to-60-year-old vines in Seveifhill , Watervale and Armagh. They produce award winning Clare Valley Shiraz and R iesling; while also trying their hands at different varieties including Mal bee, Pi not Gris, Sangiovcsc, spark Ii ng; wines in the traditional methode, as well as fort ified wines.
TASTING NOTES The Stone Bridge Pinot Gris 2015 presents pear, nectarine, red apple and orange zest aromas lea~ing to a palace feamring foll-on flavour intensity with a soft and velvety mouth feel and complementary acidity The finish is quite fleshy yet lifted and well balanced.
class WINEMAKING f ruit was harvested in the cool of the morning at optimum ripeness. A yeast was selected for fermentation to preserve the natural aromatics. Halfway through ferment 5% of the wine was transferred to new European oak and remained on lees for 10 weeks. This enhances the textural qualities for longer ageing.
GILLENTOWN ROAD, CLARE VALLEY, SA p 08 8843 4143 WWW.STONEBRIDGEWINES.COM.AU
+Try this Pinot Gris with creamy pasta and poultry,
complex seafood dishes, such as sqipked cod w ith
lemon and chilli, a~ell as washed rind cheeses. It ·
will also work wefi with mild spiced Asian dishes.
TIME TO SPEAK UP The hypocrisy of the state government
knows no bounds! Compare the taxpayer-funded page
four full -page advertisement in the Argus ol \larch 2.1 claiming 'we' re abolic;hing a r.inge of taxes for regional business' with the announcement by the local NRM board at the Clare and (,ilbert Valleys' Council meeting on Mnrch 21 that their charges to landowners were to increase by an average of 25 per cent!
I Jow arrnganl and out of touch can the NRM hoard/ management and DEWNR be that they can increase chargei:. by more than 10 times the rate ofinllation.
Especially gaJling when most residents would see the practical contribution to the communlt} by the \/RM Board (the fourth level of government!{} as ephemeral at best
TI1e muted response by the mayor and most councillors to this outrageous announcement was equally concerning.
'I he silent majority must begin to speak up· the c;tate Oppoc;ition and our council certainly do not seem to be able/ \\illing to hold the government to account. Joh• Besti1n, Auburn.
BACKPACKER TAX

The Clare Valley is gearing up for vintage and local wineries arc getting ready for a busy six weeks.
Clare grape grower and winemaker/owner of Stone Bridge Wines, Craig Thomson said following ·the decent soaking of rain during the final months of 2009, along with a small amount that fell during December, there was plenty of sub soil moisture.
"'A lot of vineyards we buy from have only just started watering," he said.
Craig is confident he will be picking_pinot gris in about the second weekofFebruarywithall other grape varieties to follow on during late February to early March.
"We would hope (this year's stand out would be) shiraz, it's something everyone drinks.
"My vineyard is the best it's ever looked ... 60 to 70 tonne will be. our crush this year," Craig said.
With vintage not too far away the worst that could happen to potentially ruin a vintage could either be large amounts of rain
" .. the early • • spr1ngra1n
gave good canopy
growth for the fruit to
ripen." during late February to early March.
"I can't see a lot of fruit getting cooked (if we had another hot spell), there's lots of canopy. It's an about managing them correctly.
"Shiraz and Riesling are filling out well," he said.
Clare Region Winegrape Growers Association vice chair Kate Strachan said although some people were talking of an early vintage she doesn't think it will be much earlier than normal.
"With the long dry spell we have had since December it will probably have a slight impact, but the early spring rain gave good canopy growth for the fruit to ripen," she said.
She believed the 2010 vintage would see less shiraz and chardonnay while riesling and cabernet would bring a rea$Ql'lable crop,
"I think riesling (will stand out this year ) in terms of tonnage, but riesling, cabemet and shiraz have had ideal growing conditions and will be high in quality," she said.
"It looks tQ be a good rock solid season."
Another outlet for Clare Valley growers BY KEIRA JAMES
Clare Valley grape growers without a winery contract now have anolher option for their fruit, which will help them obtain fairer prices for their efforts.
Stone Bridge Wines have entered into a joint venture with Riverland Vintners to conlract procc1:1s Clare Valley grapes, giving growers the option to on-sell their wine rather than sell grape1:1 to wineries for below cost or leave their unsold fruit on the vines.
B-double loads of grapes can be trucked to Riverland Vintners where the fruit will be made into wine at much lower prices than contract winemakers in Clare, with smaller parcels processed locally at Stone Bridge Wines. The wine making process will be overseen by winemakers Angela Ivl'eaney and Helen Foggo.
Riverland Vintners can collectively market finished bulk wine on behalf of growerl:> to major wineries and supermarkets in Asia, North America and Europe using their established pathways, or growers
can choose to sell their wine themselves.
Managing Director of Stone Bridge Wines, Craig Thomson, said the wine industry has changed, and wineries and growers.have to accept the fact that the supply chain is now dominated by large retailers in both domestic and international markets.
"If grape growers are prepared to accept these fundamental changes and look for other options there are a number of opportunities out there," he said.
By processing their grapes and selling the bulk wine, growers gain access to international markets and higher prices than if they sold tbeir fruit locally.
"Growers will again be able to make money from their fruit," Mr Thomson said.
Riverland Vintners owns three vineyard sites in the Clare Valley and grows 1700 tonnes of fruit locally.
Their Monash facility in the Riverland has on-site storage capacity of35 million litres of wine, greater than the entire Clare Valley crush.
A win for Stone Bridge · Wine judges and writers are catching on to
• what locals and visitors to Stone Bridge Wines already know about its rose, The Gardener.
Long-admired by tasters at Stone Bridge Wines' cellar door south of Clare, The Gardener earned industry recognition late last year and has recently received more acclaim.
Stone Bridge Wines first received praise from wine industry peers at last year's Clare Valley Regional Wine Show, winning Best Rose of Show. It was the winery's first trophy win at the tightly-contested local event.
"Trophies are ha rd to come by at the Clare Valley Regional Wine Show," said Stone Bridge owner and winemaker Craig Thomson. "It's recognition that you're making a true-to-style wine."
The rose, a wine style not usually synonymous with the Clare Valley, went on to receive further acclaim when it was awarded 4 11.i stars from Winestate, a national wine buying guide and magazine.
Winestate also named The Gardener in its Top 40 Best Buys in March.
"It's a credit to our wine-making team, led by Ange Meaney," said Mr. Thomson.
"Our 50-year-old Grenache vines, as well as select vineyards in Armagh and Leasingham, also have a lot to do with this success. The awards we've achieved reflect the high quality of Grenache fruit grown on these select parcels of land.'.'
Stone Bridge's 2012 Grenachc Mataro has also featured on the winner's podium recently, earning a silver medal at both the Clare Valley Regional Wine Show and the Austr alian Small Winemakers Show in Stanthorpe, Queensland.
Mr Thomson said its successor - the 2013 Grenache Mataro - also has great potential.
"We've just bottled our next Grenache Ma taro and I think it is better again."
Just as well-known for its wood-oven pizzas as its wines, Stone Bridge Wines' cellar door has become a popular Clare Valley venue, where locals and tourists can sample wines, enjoy gourmet food and mingle with friends.
A former baker, Mr Thomson uses his culinary skills to prepare the dough and take care of cooking, while his wife Lisa and daughters Lauren

and Sarah are in charge of ingredients and serving.
Stone Bridge Wines is open every day from 10 am to 4pm during the four-day Easter break. The winery will also be part of the Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend on May 17and18, participating for its fifth time.

Cellar· door to offer wood-oven pizzas each Sunday Stone Bridge wines popular with tourists and winning awards
If you are looking to take a drive on a Sunday afternoon, sit and relax to a nice glass of wine but are also looking for a gourmet bite to eat, why not try Stone Bridge Wines.
Set in the heart of the Clare Valley, the family winery is run by Craig and Lisa Thomson and their children Lauren and Sarah.
The winery opened on a warm Australia Day this year and since then it has slowly become more and more popular.
But Stone Bridge Wines is more than a winery, they are a family business and, with their wood fired pizzas set to fire up on October 11, they will become a popular spot to stop and unwind on a Sunday afternoon.
"We just wanted to do something different, people will be able to sit down and
enjoy their pizta with a glass of wine and each pizza is matched with t he wine," Cr aig a nd Lisa said. · Craig and his father Bob made the pizza oven by hand .out of recycled mater ials. With that handmade touch and homemade pizza bases topped with local produce, the gourmet food will hit the spot with each visitor.
"We will have four or five differeJJt pizzas to choose from," Craig said.
Their wines have become popular with tourists and the small winery is continually winning awards.
Recently the winery was awarded r unner-up in the World's Greatest Shiraz Challenge in the $20 to $25 bracket.
And James· Halliday has awarded the wines with a four-and-a-half ~tar r ating, with four wines rated 91 or above out of a
score of 100, for their reds and whites. In amongst the award-winning wines,
Stone Bridge Wines also sells a 25-yearold port in bulk which has been very popular.
"We are really waiting fOT the warmer weather for the pizzas and will probably look at doing pizzas for two to three months up until Christmas," Craig said.
«There are plenty of games for the children, while parents enjoy a reasonably priced Sunday lunch."
Stone Bridge Wines is on Gillent.own Rd, Clare. Follow the signs from the Clare Valley Visitor and Tourist Information Centre on Main North Road.
The business is ·open each week from Thursday until Monday from lOam until 4.pm and pizzas will be available from 1 lam until 3pm.

Stone Bridge Wines officially opened
Another small cellar door has opened in the Clare Valley, giving tourists more variety and even more to talk about.
Stone Bridge Wines held their opening on Australia Day at the cellar door on Gillcntown Road on the outskirts of Clare.
The family businesl', including Craig and Lisa ThomROn and their two children Lauren and Sarah . .is run from their property.
Danny llnydon waa MC for the afternoon, while guest speaker Phil Hoffman from Phil Hoffman Travel officially opened the cellar door.
Craig's experience within the wine industry stems from working at Jeanneret and Kirrihill wineries.
Craig then began winemaking with neighbour Ashleigh Ratcliffe
in 2000, which progrctt:-ied into a new bueincsH venture, now known as Stono Bridgo WinoH.
Only made from locally grown and low yielding vineyards, Stone BridgP Wines won seven bronze and two i;i!ver at Ute Clare Wine Show Jnsty~'ar.
"Thank you everyone for gfviftg U8 a hand. It roally is a unique experience here, we ore a small family company and w rare a family practice here with plenty of children's activities," Crnig said.
And in the cooler months, J;he family hopes to get the outside cooking oven fired up for Sunday family piz1as.
