ON THE MATThe second-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team wrestles at No. 11 Iowa State on Sunday in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The dual begins inside Hilton Coliseum. Admission is $25 for adults and $15 for youth.

DAN GABLE TRAVELING TROPHYThe Iowa-Iowa State wrestling rivalry intro-duced the Dan Gable Traveling Trophy in 2010. In a joint collabora on, the schools an-nounced the winner of the annual dual would take possession of a trophy represen ng Iowa State’s former two- me NCAA Champion and Iowa’s 15- me NCAA championship coach. Iowa has won every mee ng since the tro-phy’s incep on (9-0).

IOWA CORN CY-HAWK SERIESThe Cy-Hawk Series is in its 16th season in 2019-20, and is sponsored for the ninth me by Iowa Corn. Iowa won last year’s Cy-Hawk Series to even the all- me series, 7-7-1. Iowa State leads the 2019-20 season series, 6-5, hav-ing secured wins in volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country. Iowa has wins in foot-ball and soccer. Iowa wrestling owns a 14-1 lead in the Cy-Hawk Series duals. The Cyclones won the fi rst mee ng in 2004. Iowa has won the last 14. (Iowa has won 15 straight overall, including a mee ng at the Na onal Duals.)

CY-HAWK EXPERIENCESpencer Lee, Michael Kemerer, Alex Marinelli, and Cash Wilcke are each making their third appearance in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Lee and Marinelli are each 2-0 with a combined three pins and one major decision. Lee pinned Sinjin Briggs in 40 seconds, and Marinelli pinned Skyler St. John in 52 seconds the last me Iowa visited Hilton. Lee won by major decision, 13-4, against Alex Mackall last season at Carver, and Marinelli won by fall in 4:45 against Brady Jen-nings. Kemerer is 2-0, winning by an 8-7 decision in 2016 and an 11-5 decision in 2018. Wilcke is 0-2 in two previous appearances, dropping a 4-3 decision in 2016 and a 7-6 deci-sion in 2018. Aus n DeSanto (0-1), Paul Glynn (1-0), Pat Lugo (0-1), Max Murin (0-1), Kaleb Young (1-0), and Jacob Warner (1-0) are all making their sec-ond appearances in the series.

BRANDS 14, IOWA STATE 0University of Iowa head coach Tom Brands is 14-0 all- me against Iowa State. During that stretch, the Hawkeyes have won by an average of 13.9 points per dual, outscoring Iowa State, 366-158. The slimmest margin of victory over the last 11 mee ngs was an 19-18 win Iowa City in 2018. The largest margin of victory was 29 points, fi rst a 32-3 win in Iowa City in 2012, and then a 35-6 win in Ames in 2018.

WARNER’S BIG DEBUT Jacob Warner made his college debut on Dec. 1, 2018, in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Warner, then a redshirt freshman ranked No. 11 in the country, scored a reversal with fi ve seconds le in the match to defeat No. 5 Willie Miklus, 5-4.

UP AND AT ‘EMJunior Aus n DeSanto and senior Michael Ke-merer opened the 2019 season Nov. 17 in new weight classes. DeSanto, a 2019 All-American at 133, wrestled at 141 for the fi rst me in his ca-reer and won by 23-4 technical fall. Kemerer, a 2017 and 2018 All-American at 157, returned to the mat a er a 20-month absence and wrestled for the fi rst me in his career at 174. He won by 20-0 technical fall. Redshirt freshman Nelson Brands, who entered the season billed as a 165-pounder, opened his college career with an 8-4 decision at 184.

The Cy-Hawk Series is in its 16th season in 2019-20, being sponsored for the ninth me by Iowa Corn.

Iowa won last year’s Cy-Hawks Series 15-10 to even the all- me series to 7-7-1.

Iowa captured the inaugural Cy-Hawk Series in 2004-05 (13-8), and won again in 2006-07 (13-8), 2008-09 (21-4), 2010-11 (15-11), 2012-13 (17-9), 2016-17 (20-7), and 2018-19 (15-10).

Iowa State won the compe on in 2005-06 (13-8), 2007-08 (18-9), 2009-10 (16-11), 2011-12 (17-11), 2013-14 (14-11), 2014-15 (15-11), and in 2017-18 (14-13).

The series awards two points (except football, which is worth three) to the winning school in each head-to-head match-up between the two ins tu ons. Addi onally, one point is awarded to an ins tu on if the gradua on rate of its student-athletes is greater than the na onal average as reported each fall by the NCAA.

A commemora ve Cy-Hawk Series Cup, which stands 31 inches tall and weighs 19 pounds, is displayed on the winning team’s campus for an en re year a er a victory. Replica cups are also presented as “traveling trophies” for individual victorious teams in the head-to-head compe on.

Three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year Tom Brands is in his 13th season as head wres-tling coach at the University of Iowa in 2019. A 1996 Olympic gold medalist and member of wrestling’s Hall of Fame, Brands is only the eighth wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. The former Hawkeye wrestler was a four-time All-American and three-time na-

tional champion (1989-92) at Iowa. He has a 219-23-1 (.903) overall and 99-10 (.908) Big Ten coaching record at Iowa. He has a 236-43-1 (.844) career mark. In 13 complete seasons as Iowa’s head coach, Brands has led the Hawk-eyes to three NCAA and four Big Ten team titles, crowning 12 NCAA champi-ons, 16 Big Ten champions and 72 All-Americans. Iowa has had 112 Academic All-Big Ten recipients, including a school-record 13 in 2018-19. The Hawkeyes have qualifi ed 118 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in the last 13 years, sending the entire 10-man lineup in 2009, 2010, 2014, and 2015. Iowa has also won or shared nine of the last 12 Big Ten regular season titles. Iowa set the national collegiate dual meet attendance record of 42,287 when Iowa defeated top-ranked Oklahoma State, 18-16, on Nov. 14, 2015 at the Grapple on the Gridiron at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa has led the nation in at-tendance in each of Brands’ 13 seasons, setting an NCAA all-time attendance average of 12,166 in 2015-16. Brands was named 2008 NWCA Coach of the Year after leading the Hawk-eyes to their fi rst NCAA team title since 2000 and their fi rst Big Ten team title since 2004. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2010, becoming the fi rst coach in conference history to earn the honor in three consecutive seasons. Brands served as head coach at Virginia Tech University for two seasons (2005-06), recording a 17-20 dual mark. In his fi rst season with the Hokies,

Brands led the team to the 2005 regular season Atlantic Coast Conference title, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-record fi ve wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. During his tenure, Virginia Tech crowned fi ve ACC champions and had two All-Americans. Senior heavy-weight Mike Faust was named 2006 ACC Wrestler of the Year. Prior to taking the helm at Virginia Tech, Brands was an assistant coach at Iowa for 12 seasons (1993-2004). He helped the Hawkeyes to a 177-27 dual record, seven NCAA and eight Big Ten team titles, while crowning 23 NCAA champions, 73 All-Americans and 36 Big Ten champions. He was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000. In 2004, he was one of three coaches for the U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, participating in Athens, and in 2016 he was named a volunteer coach of the United States Olympic team in Rio. Brands also served as assistant coach for the U.S. Freestyle World Teams in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2013, 2014, and 2015. He was named Freestyle Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling in 2002 and 2003. He has coached a number of other U.S. teams in international competition. As a competitor, Brands won the 1996 Olympic freestyle gold medal at 136.5 pounds in Atlanta, Georgia. He also won a gold medal at the 1993 World Freestyle Championships in Toronto, two World Cup gold medals (1994, 1995) and was the 1995 Pan American Games champion. He won four U.S. National titles (1993-96) and made four straight U.S. World or Olympic teams (1993-96). Along with his twin brother, Terry, Tom was named 1993 USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year, the 1993 John Smith Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler, and 1993 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year. He was inducted into wres-tling’s Hall of Fame in 2001. Brands was a four-time All-American at Iowa (1989-92). During his Hawk-eye career, he won three NCAA titles and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the 1992 NCAA Championships. Also a three-time Big Ten champion, Brands won 95 percent of his matches at Iowa. His career mark of 158-7-2 includes an undefeated season in 1991 (45-0). The Sheldon, Iowa, native was born April 9, 1968. He earned his B.S. de-gree in physical education from Iowa in 1992. He and his wife, Jeni, have three adult children, Madigan, Kinsee and Tommy.
