NCAA TOURNAMENT WINSNo. 16 IOWA STATE 84, NEVADA 73A 53NCAA Midwest Regional First RoundBradley Center, Milwaukee, Wis.March 16, 2017Iowa State controlled much of the contest, shooting 55.6 percent from the floor, to defeat Nevada, 84-73, and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in its previous 12 appearances. Monté Morris was outstanding, leading the Cyclones in scoring (19), rebounds (8) and assists (8). Deonte Burton chipped in 14 points and eight boards. ISU’s bench outscored the Wolf Pack reserves 20-4, led by Donovan Jackson’s 12 points. The Cyclones held a 40-27 lead at the half but it was cut to just four points. ISU then went on a 9-0 run to extend the lead back to 13 points and held off Nevada the rest of the way to give Steve Prohm his third NCAA Tournament win in his first two seasons as head coach.

No. 22 IOWA STATE 78, LITTLE ROCK 61A 53NCAA Midwest Regional Second RoundPepsi Center, Denver, Colo.March 19, 2016The Cyclones used another great performance from Georges Niang and hot shooting from Matt Thomas to advance to their second Sweet 16 in three seasons with a 78-61 win over Little Rock. Niang tallied 28 points and Thomas hit 4-of-8 3-pointers to finish with 16 points against the Trojans. The Cyclones shot 56.6 percent from the field and hit 11-for-21 behind the arc. Defensively, ISU was equally as impressive in holding Little Rock to just 37 percent shooting. The Cyclones held a 40-28 edge at halftime and cruised to the victory by shooting 60 percent from the field in the second half.

No. 22 IOWA STATE 94, IONA 81A 53NCAA Midwest Regional First RoundPepsi Center, Denver, Colo.March 17, 2016In Iowa State’s first NCAA Tournament game under the direction of Steve Prohm the fourth-seeded Cyclones didn’t disappoint, rolling to an impressive 94-81 win against an Iona team that was a trendy upset pick. Georges Niang was dominant as five players reached double figures and the Cyclones scored the second-most points in their NCAA Tournament history. Niang led the way with 28 points and Monté Morris tallied 20 points. The Cyclones led by eight at the half and extended the lead to as many as 18 in the second half. The Cyclones hit 10-of-22 3-pointers and shot 50 percent from the field in the win. Abdel Nader (19), Matt Thomas (14) and Jameel McKay (11) were also in double figures in the game.

No. 9 IOWA STATE 85, No. 19 NORTH CAROLINA 83A 53NCAA East Regional Third RoundAT&T Center, San Antonio, TexasMarch 23, 2014The Cyclones overcame the loss of Georges Niang to defeat North Carolina 85-83 and advance to its first Sweet 16 since 2000. DeAndre Kane led the Cyclones with 24 points and 14 rebounds, including the game-winning basket with 1.6 seconds remaining. The Cyclones trailed by eight with 4:22 left, but a pair of huge threes from Naz Long kept the Cyclones within striking distance. Long burried three 3-pointers in final five minutes and finished with 12 points in the win. With the score tied with 15.7 seconds left, Kane brought the ball up the court. He attacked and made a layup against a pair of defenders to put ISU in front by the winning margin. North Carolina tried to get down the court and call a timeout but the clock expired and ISU celebrated its advancement to the Sweet 16.

No. 9 IOWA STATE 93, NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL 75A 53NCAA East Regional Second RoundAT&T Center, San Antonio, TexasMarch 21, 2014Iowa State beat North Carolina Central 93-75 to win its first NCAA Tournament game for the third straight season, but it came at a tremendous cost as the Cyclones lost Georges Niang for the re-mainder of the season with a broken bone in his foot. Niang scored 24 points before leaving the game. The Cyclones and Eagles traded leads eight times in the opening eight minutes but ISU was able to distance itself and take a 45-39 lead into the half. The second half was all Cyclones, with the No. 3 seed shooting 65 percent in the final 20 minutes. Niang led all scorers and was joined in double figures by Melvin Ejim (17), Dustin Hogue (15), Monté Morris (15) and DeAndre Kane (14). Ejim was Iowa State’s leading rebounder with eight boards while also dishing out a team-high five assists.

IOWA STATE 77, CONNECTICUT 64A 53NCAA South Regional Second RoundKFC Yum! Iowa State made 6-of-its-first-9 3-point shots while mounting its commanding lead. NCAA TOURNAMENT WINSwon their first NCAA Tournament game since 2000. ISU was led by Curtis Stinson and Jared Homan, who tallied 18 and 14 points, re-spectively. Homan was a monster in the middle, grabbing 13 boards and swatting seven shots to help him earn CBS Chevrolet Player of the Game honors. ISU held the Gophers to 33.3 percent from the field and a 5-for-23 (21.7 percent) clip from beyond the arc. Minnesota cut the lead to five points with 3:43 remaining, but a key Stinson tear drop and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch sealed the victory for the Cyclones. Rahshon Clark had 14 points and four steals.

Stevie Johnson dunks home two of his 16 points in Iowa State’s 80-56 win over UCLA in the 2000 NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals.

No. 6 IOWA STATE 80, UCLA 56NCAA Midwest Regional SemifinalsThe Palace at Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, Mich.March 23, 2000What was billed to be one of the best regional semifinal matchups of the tournament proved otherwise. The Cyclones wasted little time in showing their strength in an 80-56 rout of UCLA, their largest victory margin in an NCAA Tournament. Jamaal Tinsley was one rebound shy of his second career triple-double (14 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds), but the story of the game was defense. The Cyclones held the vaunted UCLA offense to a 33.9 shooting percentage from the floor. While the Bruins sputtered on offense, the Cyclones thrived, shooting over 50 percent for the 17th time during the season. Michael Nurse drilled four of his five 3-point attempts to aid the Cyclones to a 6-for-10 showing from behind the arc. Nurse, Stevie Johnson and Marcus Fizer all had 16 points to pace ISU.

No. 6 IOWA STATE 79, No. 24 AUBURN 60NCAA Midwest Regional Second RoundHubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, Minneapolis, Minn.March 18, 2000Jamaal Tinsley canned back-to-back 3-pointers to key a 14-2 Iowa State second-half run that propelled the Cyclones to a 79-60 victory over Auburn in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Up until that point, the game was a see-saw battle that featured 11 ties. The score was knotted at 43-43 with less than 12 minutes left before ISU’s run. The Cyclones trailed at halftime, 33-32 for only the seventh time that season. ISU’s Marcus Fizer led all players with 22 points while pulling down 12 boards. Stevie Johnson equaled his career-high with 21 points, going 6-of-8 from the floor and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe. The Cyclones outscored the Tigers 25-6 at the free-throw line, connecting on all nine attempts in the last 12 minutes of the contest.

Humphrey Metrodome, Minneapolis, Minn.March 16, 2000Second-seeded Iowa State held off a late comeback attempt by Central Connecticut State to preserve an 88-78 win over the Blue Devils in first-round NCAA action in the Metrodome. ISU’s Jamaal Tinsley busted out with a career-high 26 points (10-of-13 FG) and broke Jeff Hornacek’s single-season assist record in the win. The Cyclones held a 19-point lead in the first half, but a spirited rally by CCSU tied the game at 69-69 with 6:13 left to play. Blue Devil Rick Mickens scored eight consecutive points during the run. ISU quickly followed with a Tinsley lay-in and a 3-pointer from Michael Nurse to jumpstart a 9-0 run to put the game away. Marcus Fizer added 27 points and 11 boards, playing all 40 minutes.

No. 18 IOWA STATE 67, No. 10 CINCINNATI 66NCAA Midwest Regional Second RoundThe Palace at Auburn Hills, Auburn Hills, Mich.March 15, 1997Klay Edwards’ left-handed hook shot with 32.4 seconds remaining was the game-winner as the Cyclones defeated No. 10 Cincinnati to advance to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1986. Cincinnati’s Damon Flint missed a running jumper with six seconds left and a last-second half-court desperation shot, giving Iowa State a 67-66 victory in NCAA Midwest Regional second-round action. Kenny Pratt’s 3-pointer that was seconds away from a shot-clock violation gave ISU a 63-58 lead with 4:20 left in the game. Melvin Levett’s two free throws put UC ahead 66-65 with 1:05 left before Edwards hit his game-winner on an out-of-bounds play. ISU shot 61.1 percent (11-of-18) in the second half and 55 percent (22-of-40) for the game. Pratt led ISU with 21 points, while Dedric Willoughby added 19 points. The Cyclones took control of the game early in the second half, despite the fact that starters Gene Oulman and Ray Wehde fouled out. Pepperdine tied the game with about six minutes left, but baskets by Roy Wehde and Jim Meyers gave ISU the lead for good. Wehde and Meyers each had 12 points, while Price Brookfield added 10. Center Nick Buzolich led Pepperdine with 22 points.

ALL-CENTURY TEAM

ALL-CENTURY TEAM The Iowa State Athletics Department celebrated 100 years of men’s basketball during the 2007-08 season. Among the highlights of the year-long tribute was the announcement of an All-Century team for men’s basketball. A total of 15 former Cyclone greats made the All-Century Team. Eight Cyclone All-Americans were guaranteed slots and fans were given the opportunity to vote for seven additional honorees during a season-long vote at cyclones.com. Iowa State honored its All-Century Team throughout the entire 2007-08 season, culminating with a special letterwin-ners reunion and a celebration at halftime of the Iowa State-Nebraska game on Feb. 16, 2008.

Zaid Abdul-Aziz “Don Smith” (1966-68)Abdul-Aziz, who played at Iowa State as Don Smith, was one of the greatest players in Big Eight history. An AP All-American center in 1968, Abdul-Aziz was ISU’s first three-time first-team all-conference player (1966, 1967, 1968). Abdul-Aziz led the Big Eight in scoring twice (1967- 24.8 ppg, 1968- 24.2 ppg) and led the league in rebounding three times (1966- 13.0 rpg, 1967- 13.4 rpg, 1968- 14.6 rpg). He was named Big Eight Player of the Year in 1968.

Victor Alexander (1988-91)Alexander’s soft touch made him one of the best low-block scorers in Iowa State history. The burly center (6-9, 265 pounds) was honored as a first-team all-Big Eight choice in 1989 and 1991 and his 1,892 career points rank fifth all-time in school history. Alexander is the most accurate shooter in the history of the program, connecting on 61.1 percent of his career shots from the field. He led the Big Eight in field goal percentage in 1991 at 65.9 percent.

Kelvin Cato (1996-97)Cato is the greatest shotblocker in Iowa State history and his presence in the middle helped the Cyclones to unprecedented success in his two seasons. The center led the conference in blocked shots in 1996 (Big Eight, 2.6 bpg) and 1997 (Big 12, 4.2 bpg) en route to the second-most blocks in school history with 189. He still owns ISU’s single-game (11) and single-season (118) rejection marks. Cato led ISU to a pair of NCAA Tournaments (1996, 1997) and the 1996 Big Eight Tournament title.

Marcus Fizer (1998-2000)Fizer is arguably the most dominant big man in the history of ISU basketball. Fizer led ISU to a school-record 32 wins and their first league title in 54 years as a junior (1999-2000). Fizer was a consensus first-team All-American, Big 12 Player of the Year and runner-up AP National Player of the Year in 2000, as the Cyclones advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. ISU’s sixth all-time leading scorer (1,830 points), Fizer broke the single-season scoring mark in 2000 (844 points).

Jack Flemming (1935-37)Flemming, a high-scoring forward, was Iowa State’s second All-American, earning national honors from Converse in 1937. Flemming averaged 7.4 ppg on ISU’s first conference champi-onship team in 1935, as the Cyclones went 8-2 against league competition to claim the Big Six crown. Flemming capped off his career by earning first-team all-Big Six kudos as well as All-America honors in 1937.

Jeff Grayer (1985-88)Grayer is the most prolific scorer in school history, amassing a school-record 2,502 points in his four-year career. The forward was a three-time first-team all-Big Eight pick (1986, 1987, 1988), as ISU made three NCAA appearances in his tenure. Grayer earned AP All-America honors and led the Big Eight in scoring (25.3 ppg) in 1988. He was named to the Big Eight’s All-Decade team in the 1980s and became the first Cyclone hoopster to represent the United States on an Olympic team in 1988.

Fred Hoiberg (1992-95)Hoiberg’s outstanding basketball ability and popularity in his hometown of Ames earned him the nickname “The Mayor” in his four years with the Cyclones. The guard was a third-team Basketball Times All-American, a first-team all-Big Eight choice and a first-team Academic All-American in 1995. ISU’s fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,993 points, Hoiberg ranks in ISU’s career top-10 in five different categories.

Jeff Hornacek (1983-86)Hornacek’s rags to riches story is the stuff legends are made of. A sparsely recruited player out of high school, Hornacek walked-on at Iowa State and went on to become the Big Eight’s all-time leader in assists (665). The heady point guard left ISU as its career leader in assists (665) and steals (211), which now

rank second. His 1,313 points rank 20th all-time. A first-team all-Big Eight selection in 1986, Hornacek went on to become an NBA All-Star, playing 14 NBA seasons and scoring more points in the NBA than any other collegiate player from the state of Iowa (15,659).

Hercle Ivy (1973-76)Ivy was a high-scoring guard for the Cyclones in the mid-1970s, ending his career in 1976 as ISU’s all-time leading scorer (1,752 points). Ivy was named first-team all-Big Eight and led the league in scoring in 1975. His 28.3 ppg scoring average that season ranked fifth nationally and is still the best single-season scoring clip in school history.

Barry Stevens (1982-85)Stevens’ uncanny long-range shooting and outstanding athletic ability was a perfect fit in Johnny Orr’s up-tempo style that helped resurrect the ISU program in the 1980s. The smooth-shooting forward ended his career as ISU’s all-time leading scorer - he now ranks third - with 2,190 points. A two-time first-team all-Big Eight selection (1984, 1985), Stevens averaged 21.7 ppg as a senior in 1985 to pace ISU to its first NCAA appearance since 1944. He has the school’s third-best single game scoring mark with 47 points.

Jake Sullivan (2001-04)Sullivan is the most prolific long-range bomber in the history of Cyclone basketball. The dead-eye guard ended his career as ISU’s all-time leader in 3-pointers made with 270 and is the Cyclones’ eighth all-time leading scorer (1,810). He owns ISU’s and the Big 12’s career (89.6 percent) and single-season (93.3 percent) free throw percentage marks. His 89.6 career free throw percentage is the 14th-best clip in NCAA history. He was a third-team Academic All-American in 2003.

Gary Thompson (1955-57)Thompson helped put Iowa State on the basketball map in the 1950s, earning first-team AP All-America honors and Big Seven Player of the Year accolades in 1957. The “Roland Rocket” was ISU’s first 1,000-point scorer, accumulating 1,253 points to rank 23nd all-time in school history. The guard led ISU to the 1955 Big Seven Holiday Tournament title and paced ISU to its first win against a top-ranked opponent, knocking off No. 1 Kansas, 39-37, on Jan. 14, 1957.

Jamaal Tinsley (2000-01)Tinsley’s incredible ballhandling skills and outstanding floor leadership propelled the Cyclones during their most produc-tive period in school history. ISU won back-to-back Big 12 titles (2000, 2001) and never lost a game in Hilton Coliseum in his two seasons as point guard, going 34-0 at home. Tinsley earned AP All-America honors and was named Big 12 Player of the Year in 2001. He still owns ISU’s single-season assists (244) and steals (98) marks.

Waldo Wegner (1933-35)Wegner was ISU’s first All-American and a dominating force in the middle, leading ISU in scoring for three consecutive seasons (1933, 1934, 1935). The center was a two-time first-team all-Big Six selection, earning Converse All-America honors in 1935. Wegner led ISU to its first-ever conference title, playing every minute of every game while averaging 10.6 ppg in the 1935 championship season. The Cyclones finished 13-3 overall and 8-2 in loop play in 1935.

Dedric Willoughby (1996-97)Willoughby’s leadership and pinpoint accuracy from long distance paced the Cyclones to consecutive NCAA appearances in 1996 and 1997. A two-time first-team all-Big Eight choice, Willoughby was named MVP of the 1996 Big Eight Tourna-ment after leading ISU to its first-ever postseason conference tournament crown. Willoughby owns ISU’s school mark in 3-pointers made in a season (102) and ranks fifth in career 3-pointers with 190.
