Introduction in IoT/M2M Telemetry (1)• In a few years from now, wirelessly connected machines will form a

new web.

– Only be of value if torrent of data generated can be stored,

processed, analysed and interpreted

– Bio-based approach for data flow impact estimation

(genetic/epidemic algorithms)

• By 2020, the market for the IoT (Internet of Things) industry alone is

expected to rise to $7.1 trillion.

– By the year 2050, technology experts predict that there will be

50 billion devices that are connected to the Internet (Cisco) –

considered too conservative (other predict 100 billion)

• M2M (Machine 2 Machine) communication paradigm advances to

IoT and cloud/fog computing

– Done by developing highly innovative and scalable service

platforms

– Enable secure-, smart- and partly-virtualised-services

• Big Data processing can decentralize the concept of the current cloud operation for answering the demands of IoT applications thatare distributed in nature

G. Suciu (Triple-Helix Bio-economy, 2016) www.beiaro.eu @GeorgeSuciuG

• Sensors– extremely low power consumption– bio/physical principles (leaf simulation, etc.)

• Gateways– extremely easy to install (adaptive control);– fully remotely controlled (autonomous);– very long life time (self healing) = very low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership);– solar powered (green energy);– media independent radio communication (GSM, GPRS, 3G, UHF);

• Telemetry servers– based on a client/server architecture– collects data from one or several Telemetry Gateways (receivers)– makes it available for viewing or for specialized analysis (fully web-based)

G. Suciu (Triple-Helix Bio-economy, 2016) www.beiaro.eu @GeorgeSuciuG

• Use of GSM/GPRS data transmission is extended in areas where

no coverage by using a UHF bridge operating in fixed range of

430 – 440 MHz connected to gateway with access to the Internet.

• Drones and Robots – a Market to 2050 ($67 Billion)• Smart Dust, Elevator to the moon, etc. but the ancient art of origami is

more than just child’s play; its principles are being used to meet a wide range of modern engineering challenges – from how to fold up a tennis court-sized solar array for use in space to reducing the amount of waste in a tube of toothpaste

• Agriculture to feed 9 billion• Farmers and big data companies invest in precision agriculture, using

sensors, drones, satellites and GPS tracking systems• farmers using only one type of precision technologies increased their

yield by 16% and cut down water use by 50%.• rapid payback using these technologies

– a 15% savings on seed, fertilizer, and chemicals• 3D sensing /printing / vision

• Imagine touring a city like Rome and with a simple command touching / viewing it as if you were present when Julius Caesar became emperor

• use that same pair of glasses and Internet connection to look up information about someone standing near you

Bio-based challenges and opportunities (1)

G. Suciu (Triple-Helix Bio-economy, 2016) www.beiaro.eu @GeorgeSuciuG

• Biosensors

• Plants and animals as sensors (mussels, etc.), even humans (citizen scientists, etc.)

• Accelerators, Incubators, Fertilizators, Cloud/Fog computing

• Inspiration from Nature / SF

• Privacy

• It's possible that in this future, privacy becomes obsolete

• Singularity would arrive in 2045 (Kurzweil) as AI overpasses total human brain equivalent

JustifiedQuantified

SubstantialThe application can measure many pollutant levels simultaneously in real time.

Will reduce the soil pollutant with 35% per each season.

Will increase trust in usage of telemetry in Romania.

BEIA has implemented tele-monitoring applications(www.beia-telemetrie.ro)– in the field of agriculture (frost warnings, disease alert for

plants, evapo-transpiration calculations, soil moisture, remotecontrol of irrigation systems, measurement of cumulateddegree days),

– hydrology(water level and flow on Danube and tributary rivers)

– renewable energy (hydro, solar, eolian)

– environment (monitoring of water and air quality)

– heliports (measurement of meteorological parameters)

– e-health (tele-diagnosis of diabetes, emergencycommunication systems for patients, nurses and doctors)

– energy efficiency in buildings

The accumulated 1.600 - 1.700 degree-days, considered as necessary fore.g. Cabernet Sauvignon full maturation, were reached on 15.09.2014 and01.10.2015 respectively

a bit later than in other years

Beia Consult International installed and is further developing for the NationalAdministration “Romanian Waters” (ANAR) an automatic telemetry system

- continuously monitor the level and water temperature along the Danubeand some of its tributary rivers.

- virtually all communication within theDanube telemonitoring system isperformed via the Internet

- brings to the system importantadvantages in what concernsinvestment and operation.

- users can have access to the systemusing any device connected toInternet.

Conclusions and Discussions• IoT/M2M telemetry for agriculture, energy and water

– Bio-based opportunities / challenges in all major domains• Accelerated Development up to 2050

– Robots could be taking over our lives and jobs: by 2040, cabs will be driven by Google robots, shops will become showrooms for online outlets and call centres will be staffed by intelligent droids

• Singularity around 2050– our intelligence will become increasingly nonbiological

and trillions of times more powerful than it is today—the dawning of a new civilization that will enable us to transcend our biological limitations and amplify our creativity

• Hyper-Acceleration Beyond H2050• competition for work caused by a rise in the robots
