Digitizing things—from light bulbs to industrial manufacturing equipment to smart watches—is the next phase of the digital transformation.

The Internet of Things (IoT) empowers businesses with the intelligence needed to build new services and business models, improve products and services over time, and strengthen the customer experience. That’s because using IoT applications means you can understand business operations better, make intelligent decisions faster, and develop a data-driven approach to decision-making.

IoT is relevant across all industries, with strong growth in manufacturing, transportation and logistics, health care, retail, connected buildings and homes, and utilities.

For example, health-care providers are improving patient care, using IoT applications that enable remote monitoring of patient health. Manufacturers are improving processes, reducing costs, and increasing safety by analyzing data from equipment, creating predictive maintenance models, and keeping devices up to date with over-the-air updates.

As you can see, the explosive growth of IoT use cases and the sheer number and diversity of devices (or “things”) has been phenomenal.

These devices create a massive amount of data that businesses can use for decision-making. Learn how AWS IoT helps businesses connect and manage devices and gain intelligence from IoT data.

If you knew the state of every thing and could reason on top of that data, what problems would you solve?

While IoT promises many business benefits, businesses still struggle to build IoT applications. Connecting devices is difficult. Some devices—such as smart speakers—are built connected from the start. Others—such as pumps and valves—use operational technology to connect to on-premises applications. And still others—like electronic blood pressure monitors—don’t have connectivity at all. The diversity of IoT devices also adds complexity. Some devices have relatively little CPU and disk, which makes the cloud disproportionately important, while others can run full software programs. Businesses also struggle to manage devices and an expanding infrastructure. Today, there are billions of physical devices located in homes, factories, oil wells, agricultural fields, hospitals, cars, machinery, and thousands of other places. This means that businesses must manage infrastructure that is not located in a data center. In the future, servers will move to the cloud and connected devices will be on-premises—literally everywhere. Collecting and analyzing IoT data is also a challenge. Because devices are everywhere, including places with intermittent connectivity, it’s difficult for customers to collect and analyze data for their IoT applications in real time. Analyzing IoT data is also slow because it often contains significant gaps, corrupted messages, and false readings. In addition, IoT data often needs to be enriched with information, such as time and location, making it even harder to analyze quickly. It’s hard enough to build basic reporting, let alone more sophisticated IoT analytics, such as machine learning.

In order to build IoT applications, businesses have to do much of the heavy lifting to connect and manage devices, and even more heavy lifting to analyze IoT data. AWS IoT was built to overcome these challenges.

IoT Challenges

“We chose AWS IoT services to ensure we can meet our customers’ scale and reliability requirements. We have expanded these services to ensure that data from these devices is appropriately routed, devices are updated to the latest firmware, and are monitored to ensure they function properly in the field. Using AWS IoT Device Management, we were able to quickly develop the capabilities we need in the market.”

AWS IoT offers a set of managed services and software for organizations to easily create IoT solutions that increase operational efficiency and create net-new revenue streams. With AWS IoT, businesses can securely connect and manage millions of devices and gather device data.

Businesses can also perform sophisticated analytics, such as machine learning. AWS IoT gives you the flexibility to collect data and compute in the cloud or wherever data is generated in order to deploy smarter, faster responding, and more cost-effective IoT applications. The mission of AWS IoT is to make sure you can know the state of every thing and can reason on top of that data to solve business problems.

AWS IoT provides device software, connectivity and control services, and analytics services, so you can easily build IoT applications.

Device software, including Amazon FreeRTOS and AWS IoT Greengrass, enables you to securely connect devices, gather data, and take intelligent actions locally—even when Internet connectivity is down.

Connectivity and Control services, including AWS IoT Core, AWS IoT Device Management, and AWS IoT Device Defender, allow you to quickly onboard large and diverse fleets, maintain fleet health, and keep fleets secure.

Analytics services, including AWS IoT Analytics, AWS IoT SiteWise, AWS IoT Events, and AWS IoT Things Graph, allow you to easily analyze your IoT data. You can use AWS IoT Events to detect and respond to events from IoT sensors, and applications use AWS IoT SiteWise to collect, structure, and search industrial IoT data. Additionally, AWS IoT Things Graph allows you to visually connect different devices and web services to IoT applications.

AWS IoT has deep IoT edge software, a simple device programming model, machine learning capabilities, and pay-as-you-go pricing.

Deep IoT Edge software

AWS IoT helps you run applications seamlessly across AWS Cloud and edge devices. AWS IoT gives you the flexibility to collect data and compute in the cloud or wherever data is generated. With AWS IoT Greengrass, connected devices gather data, keep device data in sync, and communicate with other devices securely—even when not connected to the Internet. Devices can respond quickly to local events while still using the cloud for management, analytics, and durable storage.

AWS IoT Greengrass is a good fit for more powerful edge devices. However, billions of devices run on microcontrollers, which have limited compute power and memory capacity. Amazon FreeRTOS extends the edge to microcontroller-based devices, such as sensors. Amazon FreeRTOS securely connects your small, low-power devices to more powerful edge devices or to the cloud. By reducing the complexity, cost, and time to market for connecting microcontroller-based devices to the cloud, you can have an IoT solution very quickly.

Simplified device programming with AWS Lambda

AWS IoT Greengrass uses the same AWS Lambda programming model you use in the cloud, so you can develop code in the cloud and then deploy it seamlessly to your devices. AWS IoT Greengrass lets you execute Lambda functions locally, reducing the complexity of developing embedded software.

Why AWS IoT?

Easily add machine learning to your IoT applications

AWS IoT helps you add machine learning to your IoT applications. First, AWS IoT Analytics filters, transforms, and enriches IoT data before storing it in a time-series data store for querying and analysis. You can then use pre-built machine learning models for common IoT use cases. With AWS IoT Analytics, you can get business insights from machine learning without having to build your own IoT analytics platform.

Using AWS IoT Greengrass Machine Learning Inference, you can take machine learning models that were built and trained in the cloud and then deploy and run them locally on devices. Building and training machine learning models requires massive computing resources, so it is a natural fit for the cloud. But, inference takes a lot less compute power and is typically done in real time when new data is available, so getting inference results with very low latency allows your applications to respond quickly to local events.

Pay-as-you-go pricing

With AWS IoT, you only pay for what you use and when you use it. There are many IoT services that can be included in your IoT application, and you are charged only for the features you are using to satisfy your unique use case. Also, because AWS IoT is built on the serverless computing model, you only pay for cloud resources when you use them. Serverless computing allows you to build and run applications without thinking about servers.

“Leveraging managed, optimized services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, AWS IoT, Amazon API Gateway, AWS Lambda, Amazon Cloudfront, Amazon RDS, and Amazon Cognito allows our developers and engineers to focus on product delivery and its value to our customers. It abstracts away some of the common problems of operating system configuration and architecture design. It also makes it easier to maintain a good, common framework for product development across all our teams, internationally.”
