Capablanca in theUnited Kingdom

by Vlastimil Fiahpublished by Moravian Chess,

hc., 360 pages, @ 2m6. Retaal €32.95

T / last imi l Fiala, author of a two-volume\/ "warts-and-al l" biography of AlexanderY Alekhine. has turned his attention to Jose Raril

Capablanca, the third World Champion. According to theauthor, "so far nobody has been brave enough to write[Capablanca's] complete chess biography." Because "achronological biography" may "fail (especially due to thelimitation in size) to register each event from the chess lifeto the optimal degr@," Vala has chosen to write a series of"partial studies," Capblancab Chess Career, the first twoof which are geographically-based. [n so doing, he ex-pects to publish "several thousand pa,ges."

lf Capablanca in the United Kingdom (1911-1920) isany indicatioq he'll certainly succeed in his expectation. The presentation tends to be archival in nature, i.e., muchof the prose consists of articles culled from newspapers, magazines, etc. Thus there may be several accounts of aparticular event. In additiorL the author provides a sun-mary of the account(s).

Even for the reader vitally interested in the particularsof Capablanca's simuls, this repetition may be a bit toomuch. Nevertheless, there are plenty of games (123) to re-vive the spirit. For the two monographs devoted toCapablanca's sojourns in the British Isles fthe second,Capablanca in the United Kingdom (1922-1939), is dueout later this yearl, Mala has found over 100 games thathave not been published in other books. Annotations, ifany, are from contemporaneous sources only. And they, too, may be repetitious.

A curious thing is that it is in the annotations that themajority of 'tlpographical errors'are found. The gamesthsmselves are presented in figurine algebraic, but capturesare variously notated. sometimes with 'x' and sometimeswithout, often in the same game. A further irritation istlat, if one is the slightest bit inattentive in one's reading, one may not notice the passing from the author's words toa quoted article or from one quoted article to another. Suchextensive quotations should be highlighted by using indentedparagraphs to visually cue the reader.

All in all, it's a decent book, though not a great one. Ifyou'ro interested in Capablanca, contemporaneous writ-ings about him, and what he himself said, then by all meansinvestinthis series. I

Relentless Romanian Radu Roua Rompsin Oregon Championship

by Neil Dale

On the first day, it looked like the youngest players would take over, the two leadersafter day one were Blake Phillips and Raleigh Foster, who each won the first tu'ogames. But that was only the beginning, at the end it was Radu Rou4 the "RelentlesssRomanian," who finished a full two points ahead of the field with a final score of7Yz ponts. He drew his first game with Corey Russell, a former state champion, and then won six straight. Hc finished with draws in the last hvo games. Threeplayers tied for second through fourth: Phillips, Mike Morris. and Russell. Phillipsplayed real fighting chess, he only had one draw. After a great start, he lost the nextthree in a row. To his credit, he did not let it get him down, he scored 3% out of thelast four rounds. Morris had a good tournament, his only losses were to Phillipsand the champion. Russell also finished strong, after scoring only two points out ofthe first five games, his onl1, loss was to Raleigh Foster, who finishcd in sole pos-session of fifth place with five points. Eduardo Daroza scored 4% to finish in thesixth slot. Carl Haessler did not have a good tournament, I guess this was not theGresham Open. He ended up in the seventh spot with a score of four. Next, wehave "drawmeister" GrishaAlpernas, who lost two games and drew seven! GuntherJacobi and Mrke Janmro each scored two pornts.

It was the first state championship appearance for Alpernas, Daroza, Foster,Jacobi, and Phillips. It was statistically unlikely that all the rookies would do well, but the two youngcr ones (Fostcr and Phillips) did very well, in my opinion. Watchout for these guys in the future. The tournamcnt was held at the Portland ChessClub, over two successive weekends, starting on April I 3th. It originally rvas sched-uled for McMinnville, but the illness of Clark Harmon forced the movc. ClarkFlarmon died on April 12, so this year's toumament startcd on a somber note, rvitha moment of silence in remembrance of Clark Harmon. Wc all will miss him.

Black's point is that after 32.9.xb7Exm, White has no good discoveries withthe Bishop. ln fact, no matter whereWhite moves it, Black will just play...6ge6 and have a piece for a pawn, which is not enough compensation.

that leveled it out.26.Ef3 27.H8 h6 28.h4 Ah7 Prevents ...d6-d5

Westside Reigns in Inland Empireby Kevin Korsmo

aul Barton and Josh Sinanan won ttre 2007 Inland Em-pire Ope,n. Their 4.5 scores topped the 39 player field.Dan Ma$ews, the 2006 champion, finished third with

a 4.0 score. The toumey title went to the very end. Sinananstopped John Julian in one of the last contests of the day.Bartron then upended top seed Dave Sprenlle in the very lastgame of the toumey to share the title with Sinanan.

The Class A prizes were shared by Chris Kalina andMicbael Murray, each ofwhom scored 2.5 The Class B prizeswere split by Cynrs Desnarais and Jotrn Waltm, bcttr of whomalso scored 3.5. The Class C prizes were won by RyanAckerman and Travis Elisara. Ackerman also won the prizefor the second largest upset.

The Class D category was won by Taylor Coles. Thylor, the lowest rated player in the tourney, scored an impressive 3.0en route to claiming the section prize. The second place inClass D was split between Elliott Chow and Jim Waugh.Wargb the oldest player inthe event celebrated his 78th birth-day on the final day ofplay. Way to go, Jim! The largest upsetprize was secured by Scott Engelhard.

The Inland Empire Open, first played in 1954, is the old-est weekend tournament in Eastern Washington and one of thelongest runmng events in the state.

Julian Tops Montana Openby BiIl McBruom

I ;f issoula hosted the 72nd State Open the weekend ofl\/ I April 2l-22. Atotal of 35 players participated-

t V lthe largest turnout in a number of years. ArmanGoplen came all the way from Norttr Dakota and he brought afrien4 Steven Legenfelder. The Harmans brought their youngsons (Carl, 12, and Luke, 8) from Boise. Luke did well and gotthe respect of every player with whom he played. This wasvirtually a certainty after beating a strong "A" player in the firstround. And, of course, our friends from Spokane (and envi-rons) came out in force, contributing ten to the total.

John Julian ofSpokane started on board one and stayedtlrere for five rounds. In eaming his first place with 4 %poirts(and $175), he was obliged to take on a C playeE a strong Bplayer and three A players. There was a three-way tie for sec-ond-third involving Michael Murray (Seattle), Phil Weyland(Post Falls), and Zach Countryman (Spokane)-each had ascore of four points and shared $150. The best the C playerscould do was an even score, and this was accomplished by RonWeyland of Post Falls, ID, Missoula's Bob Rajala" and eight-yearold Luke Harman from Boise. [n contrast, one D player

(Ward Chow of Spokane) and a Missoula unrated (EricEklund) each earned a plus score of three points.

As usual, the annual business mesting was conducted be-tween rounds four and five. Dan McCourt, reelected as Sec-retary/Treasurer will soon have not€s available. The StateOpen concludes the 2006-2007 grand prix rycle and is the lastpart ofthe process of seeding six players ilno tbe Closed/Barto(June 9-10 in Butte). The qualifiers and alternates will be ideo-tified as soon as the Open's grand prix points are calculatodand their names will be posted on the MCA web site. Billingsis the site for the 2008 State Open and the new Exocutive B@rdwill soon select a date and secure a location.

As an aside-and a learning experience-there nas a dis-pute in a g:une during this year's Opeir. Two playen, each ofwhom commented a number of times over the board that theirgame w:ts "drawish" or "drawn," had a different understand-ing as to whether they had in fact agreed to a draw. Given theabsence of clear+ut evidence, the T.D. declared the gamedrawn and was upheld by an on-site appeals committee. Thclesson of this is to make sure you and your opponent have thesame understanding and promptly sign both score shoets withthe outcome indicated. Despite ternptation, leave the playinghall for any analysis or "what-ifs." Analysis in the playing ballis not only proscribed in most tournaments, but it also risks thesort of misunderstanding described here.

Spokane Out-of-Towners' GPIt will run at the same time as the ne,lrt Spokane Grand hix

from Aug. l, 2007 thru July 3lst 200t and follows the samescoring rules. The prize however is a bit different. The outof-town player with the most points will get free entry into euNWGP Spokane Chess Club Grand Prix events the followingyear: August l, 2008 through July 31,2009.

This is Nor a cash prize and ceN'r be used by anyone else.

Black innocently sets himself up fora deadly pin. Slower development andlack of space make the Black positontac-tically fragile in the early stages of manySicilian lines. Tactical vigilance is a must.S. . .Wa5 is the standard move, after whichBlack seems to have a reasonable posi-tion. A few examples:

he 2007 cdition of the grand prix has been named in honor of our recently passed friend" Clark llarmon. I do not havea full list of thc donors, but I thank them. Clark was a friend of mine for many yqrs, although the only time we got toplal'was in the opening round of the US Open in Reno a few years ago.

This year is offto a good sIart. 254 people have entered one or more GP erents, as of the end ofApril. Although notincluded in the statistics below, the Pierce County Open in Tacoma the fust weekend of May added ten new players to thattally. We are also getting good attendance from players who live outside ofthe region. Twenty-six players from ten states andCanada have added to our GP turnout. I expect a big jump in these numbers when the Washington Open results are added in.

One last thing- u'ill someone wake up the Masters and Experts in Oregon? There has got to be more than two each.
