Happiness is a voyage, not a destination. There is no better time to be happy than now. The voyage as Your District Governor over the past year has been great. The thanks are to you, the members of our District. You have made Yvonne and I feel welcome everywhere we have been and we will be forever grateful for your friendship and assistance. Fellow Lions:

I finally have a few moments to write this last message as your Vice District Governor. The great thing about Lions is that there’s always something to do – and believe me, Amy and I have been doing a lot of Lions “stuff.”. In the midst of the final weeks of the current Lions year, there still some “loose ends” that I could use some advice and more time – yes, some help – but I’ll survive. My mentorship under DG Emil has been both eye-opening and challenging. He is arguably one of the most knowledgeable Lions amongst us – thankfully, he will remain close by as the Multiple District’s Council Chair. Congratulations

to Council Chair Emil and Council “Babe” Yvonne. I will never forget my experience with DG Emil as both Lion and friend. The most gratifying part of the past month has been our officer training sessions. On May 30th a group of PDG’s and Past Presidents gathered at the Oyster Point Yacht Club with 30 incoming presi-dents for our first President Elect Training Seminar. The nearly all-day affair was a wonderful oppor-tunity to give our newest club leaders a head-start in a successful year. It was equally valuable for our past leaders and District officers to mentor and offer their advice. Many thanks for the continued hospitality of the Oyster Pt. VDG Message, continued from Page 1 The schooling of Lions continued on June 13 as nearly 100 club officers attended the annual Club Officer Training and Orientation at the Millbrae Rec. Center. Lion Paul Cademartori, the Leadership Development chairman, successfully packed a ton of valuable information into the morning session. Presidents and Tail Twisters alike left the training event eager and confident to lead their clubs. Thanks to all who helped make this event both successful and worthwhile. Yes, the past month has been a whirlwind of Lions activities and events. And geez, the next month will prove to be downright crazy. Amy and I thrive on the craziness and look forward to every moment. Each year I wonder how much more I can get from being a Lion, and each year I’m amazed out how much our great organization has given to me. I have a real good feeling that the coming year will be no different. Thank you DG Emil and Lion Yvonne. Thank you Amy. Thank you Lions of District 4-C4 - what can I bring you from Minneapolis? All you need is love… In Lionism, DGE Ken PS: Please plan on being a part of the installation celebration on August 9. (See article Pg 11)

Millbrae Lions Guest Speaker: On March 18th we enjoyed hearing from Captain Burt Newmark. He was a fighter pilot in the European Theater during WWII. He was shot down and imprisoned in Germany in the fall of 1944. His story is captivating because of what happened after the German officer who was interrogating him discovered that he was Jewish. He had a great PowerPoint presentation with pictures. We enjoyed hearing this history-making officer, particularly as there are fewer and fewer of them still alive today. If other clubs would like an inspiring story from a guest speaker they a re invited to contact him at [email protected]

Millbrae Lions Host May PCL with “Island Theme” May 18th the Millbrae Lions Club hosted the Peninsula Council of Lions meeting. Even though most Lions from our District were “filled to the brim” with Lionism after a fun filled weekend in Sacramento, there was still a good turnout for this second to the last PCL meeting of the 2008-2009 term. The theme was “Hawaiian” as most Lions participated by wearing their Island shirts and garb; and as Lions from all over 4-C4 arrived at Millbrae’s “Dave Chetcuti Room” Hawaiian music could be heard in the background.

A great group of Millbrae Lions, headed by Lion PP Don Beyer, made preparations all afternoon and put together a wonderful meal by cooking BBQ chicken, Ribs and side dishes with ice cream for dessert. PCL President Lion Rick Oshsenhirt began the meeting with Millbrae Lion & PCL Treasurer Mike Simonini leading the Pledge; Millbrae Lions Publicity Director Mary Griffin singing God Bless America; and Millbrae

Lions President Paul Larson offering the invocation. Lion PCL Secretary Connie Barba gave a Secretary’s Report, Lion PCL Treasurer Lion Mike Simonini gave a brief Treasurer’s report, and PCL Lion 1st VP Toni Nava invited each attending Club President to give a report on the current happenings in their clubs. After VDG and incoming Governor Ken Ibarra gave words of encouragement, PCL PP Paul Davis announced nominations for incoming 2009-2010 PCL Officers…which included SSF Host Lion Rick Ochsenhirt as Immediate Past President; Burlingame Lion Toni Nava as President; SSF GG Lion Rudy Pedagat as 1st VP; San Bruno Lion Mario Benavente as 2nd VP; San Mateo Lion Ray Mahaffay as Treasurer and Millbrae Lion Paul Larson as Secretary. In conclusion, after Lion President Rick recognized the attending PCL Past Presidents and PDG’s, incoming VDG Mike Simonini called out the raffle ticket numbers for the wonderful Hawaiian themed prizes. Thanks to all the Millbrae Lions who made this evening possible including those who helped cook, prepare and attend, and thanks to all the Lions from around District 4-C4 who attended this enjoyable evening. Together we all had a great time! Take care from Millbrae Lions Club President Paul Larson.

A Letter from Eric Brewster MD-4 Student Speaker Contest winner It’s been three days now since the State Final, and my mom and I keep looking at each other, taking turns declaring, “Are you kidding me?” Five months and six rounds ago, I did not consider this a possibility. To completely understate things, I’m pleasantly surprised. I can only guess at how much work went into orchestrating the Student Speakers Contest. While I simply performed a ten-minute speech, months of preparation in every corner of the state culminated in this weekend. At the beginning of this process, my schoolmate and I competed against each other at the Long Beach Petroleum Club—and another thousand students competed in another couple hundred locations elsewhere. While I moved from one round to the next, chairpersons lined up events, trustees raised scholarship money, judges sacrificed their weekends, and the Lions so faithfully cheered us students along. I need to thank so many of you I’m not sure where to start. I hope you enjoyed the contest as much as I have (highly unlikely), and feel you made a difference in the lives of the students who competed. Giving us the chance to speak, to communicate, lending us a willing ear—it is perhaps the greatest gift you can offer. The contest had already led me to endeavor further into the world of public speaking; to wind up the winner is more than I could have ever desired. I will never forget what the Lions have done for my family and me. The experience was nothing short of wonderful the entire way through, and I continue to be amazed by the sincerity and generosity of the Lions. I’m happy to say that as a scholarship recipient, the Lions won’t be able to get rid of me for a long, long time. Thank you for everything, Eric Brewster

LIONS CODE OF ETHICS •To Show my faith in the worthiness of my vocation by industrious application to the end that I may merit a reputation for quality of service. •To Seek success and to demand all fair remuneration or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self-respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of questionable acts on my part. •To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another's; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself. •Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my position or action towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself. •To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one another, but that true friendship demands nothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given. •Always to bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to my nation, my state, and my community, as to give them my unswerving loyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my time, labor and means. •To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy. •To Be Careful with my criticism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy.
