Saint Louis Section of IEEE

Chair’s Column, Summer 2016

Hello and happy summer! We’ve had quite a busy spring that included a number of first-time events for the St. Louis Section.

In March, IEEE STL sponsored a Second Friday profes-sional development seminar at the Engineering Cen-ter of St. Louis focused on topics related to energy efficiency. In May, we participated as co-sponsors of the SmartComp 2016 International Conference on Smart Computing in May and in June we hosted a visit by IEEE Legislative Representative Aline McNaull. Each of these programs was a first for our section and we are looking forward to continuing to expand our involvement in new and interesting programming for our membership.

Another exciting development was the inauguration of our Facebook page, IEEE St. Louis Section, that we hope will serve as a more real-time source of information about the sec-tion. If you have a Facebook, please take the time to follow IEEE STL so that you can stay up to date.

I’d also like to take a moment to congratulate the following section members on their R5 Conference awards:

Outstanding Engineering Educator Award 2015 - R. Joe Stanley

Outstanding Student Member Award 2015 - Leann Krieger

Circuit Design 2016 1st Place - Li Guan and Matthew Wedewer, Missouri University of Sci-ence and Technology

Standards 2016 1st Place - Jei’an Lou, Labbeb Quaisi, Mark Wisniewski; Saint Louis Univer-sity, A Guide Highlighting Improvement for Future Power Systems

Our summer lull will be followed by a very busy fall including a BBQ Social to be held at SIUE this year, the Senior Member drive, the Black Box Competition, and, of course, our Winter Social scheduled for Sat., Dec. 10, at the Engineers’ Club of St. Louis. Stayed tuned for details via e-notice and on Facebook.

One of the best parts of chairing the section is meeting our membership, and I look forward to meeting more of you in the coming weeks and months. Please don’t hesi-tate to contact me directly with your ideas, questions, or concerns.

And last but not least, a special thank you to our wonderful newsletter team for their invaluable assistance in publishing the ION Summer 2016 newsletter:
