Important Voter Information Top-Two Open Primary Under the Top-Two Candidates Open Primary Act, approved by the voters in 2010, only the two candidates who received the top number of votes in the primary election for 8th Congressional, 8th State Senate, 26th State Assembly districts and all state constitutional offices will appear on the General Election Ballot. Candidates for these offices may have the same political party preference. Additionally, write-in candidates are no longer allowed for these contests at the General Election. For more information you may contact the Inyo County Elections Department at (760) 878-0224. The political party preference of candidates will show on the ballot in the following ways:

Candidate has a political party preference: “Party Preference: (name of party)”

Candidate is registered with no political party preference: “Party Preference: None”

Abbreviations will be used to designate political party preference if the full name cannot fit on the ballot.

Party Endorsements Proposition 14, also authorizes qualified political parties to endorse candidates for voter-nominated offices in the Sample Ballot booklet. The following lists of candidates are the official endorsements that were received by the deadline. The endorsements listed may be from a different political party than the candidate prefers. Please refer to the official ballot to view the candidates’ political party preference.

STATEMENT OF CANDIDATE FORU.S. REPRESENTATIVE, 8TH DISTRICT

PAUL COOKOccupation: United States RepresentativeEducation and Qualifications: Two years ago, as a retired COLONELwith 26 years of service in the US Marine Corps, I asked for yourtrust to become your Congressman. Having been awarded the BronzeStar and two Purple Hearts for my time in Vietnam, I witnessed greatsacrifices by my fellow Americans and pledged to ensure their effortswould not be in vain.As your Congressman, I’ve honored that commitment by fighting fora balanced budget, for our veterans, to keep jobs in America, and todefend our way of life.I fought to pass a balanced budget plan to reduce the deficit by $4.6trillion over the next ten years, strengthen America’s economy, andprotect Medicare for seniors. I voted over ten times to defund, delay, and replace Obamacare.I fought to restore the Cost of Living Adjustment for ALL veteransand for the in-state college tuition rate they deserve. I supported theKeystone pipeline because it would put 20,000 Americans to work.In Inyo County, I’ve worked to ensure that public lands are used forthe public good. That means allowing use of places like Death ValleyNational Park for events and races which help our local economy.I’m honored my work has earned the endorsements of USRepresentative Tom McClintock, Inyo County Sheriff Bill Lutze, andInyo County Board of Supervisors Chairman Rick Pucci. We’ve accomplished a great deal, but we cannot stop here. With yourtrust and vote, I’ll keep fighting for you in CongressLearn more at www.joinpaulcook.com.

STATEMENT OF CANDIDATE FORSTATE SENATOR, 8TH DISTRICT

TOM BERRYHILL AGE: 60Occupation: Farmer/LegislatorEducation and Qualifications: As a fourth generation Central Valleyfarmer and independent businessman, I’m proud so many communityleaders and respected organizations want me re-elected to the StateSenate. A few examples: I’m endorsed by Fresno County Sheriff MargaretMims, the California Grape & Tree Fruit League President Barry Bidwelland CDF Firefighters, the largest fire department in the state.During my service, I wrote legislation that would end environmentalregulatory abuses and stop frivolous lawsuits that are costing our Valleyjobs. In fact, the (CSBA) California Small Business Association namedme the 2013 Senate Legislator of the Year. One important law I authored cracked down on metal theft, a seriousproblem that’s plaguing the Central Valley and costing farmers, businesses, local government and public schools millions of dollars peryear in property damage. I have fought to build more water storage facilities, stop the early releaseof dangerous convicts and opposed tax hikes. I was also appointedchairman of the bi-partisan Rural Caucus that’s worked to help ouragricultural economy. Additionally, I authored and co-sponsored billsto curtail out of control public pensions, provide more career and technicaleducation training programs, require a state budget spending cap andconserve prime farmland. In the past, I’ve received the California Rifle and Pistol AssociationLegislator of the Year award, the American Nurses Association CaliforniaLegislator of the Year award and the Friends of California CommunityColleges award. Most important, I’m happily married to my wife, Loretta, and I have twobeautiful daughters. Visit www.tomberryhill.com

SUSANNE M. RIZO, ESQ.Occupation: Director, Eastern Sierra Department of Child Support

ServicesEducation and Qualifications: As a former Bishop Union HighSchool graduate, I believe in preserving the quality of education inour rural schools. Ensuring that students have a solid education thatprepares them to engage in their community, trade, and/or chosenprofession is critical. As a working professional, wife, and mother oftwo children I want to work to ensure our local educational systemis the best it can be and offers students the educational skills neededto have a successful future. I have served as Director of Child SupportServices in Inyo and Mono Counties since January 2011. Prior tothat, I was employed as an attorney in the Inyo County Counsel’sOffice from 2005 to 2011. I believe in Access, Fairness, Responsibilityand Professionalism. KATHY ZACK AGE: 56Occupation: IncumbentEducation and Qualifications: I am a 1976 graduate of the Bishopschool system and received my undergraduate degree from StanfordUniversity in 1980. I received my Masters in Business Administrationfrom the University of Chicago in 1984, and spent nearly 20 yearsin a career in healthcare and hospital management. My husbandand I have three children; one is in high school and the other twoare recent BUHS graduates. I have valued education my entire life, and nothing is more important to me than the education of ourcommunity’s children. As our nation’s changing economy hasdemonstrated, without a strong education our children’s futures arelimited. I have served on the BUSD Board since 2006 and understand thechallenges and opportunities facing our schools. As a trustee, I keeplearning and achievement for all students as my primary focus. Duringmy time on the board student achievement has steadily risen, butthere is much more to be done. We have a talented leadership teamand a faculty that is committed to improving student achievement.I am excited about the future, and respectfully ask for your supportin this election.

TAYLOR LUDWICK AGE: 33Occupation: VeterinarianEducation and Qualifications: I was born and raised in SantaBarbara, CA and received my undergraduate degree from WestmontCollege in 2002. I completed a Master’s degree in Agricultural andEnvironmental Chemistry at the University of California, Davis in2006. I then received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from theUniversity of California, Davis in 2011. My wife is a fifth generationBishop native and graduate of the Bishop school system. We havefour young children, including a third grader, and a kindergartenerat Bishop Union Elementary School. A mentor once told me “Graduate from veterinary school, then learnhow to be a veterinarian.” I believe this wise statement has a broaderapplication to education in general. The role of a school is to equipan individual with foundational tools necessary to pursue their chosenpath. The onus is then on the individual to use these tools to completetheir journey. As a passionate lifelong learner who is still applyingthe tools I’ve acquired through extensive schooling, I believe I bringunique perspective and appreciation for quality education. It wouldbe a distinct privilege to serve on the BUSD Board and ensure thatBishop students leave fully equipped with tools for the journey.
