The first inauguration of the Department of Comparative Literature in Belgrade dates back to 1873, within the academic institution known as The High School, which was to become the University of Belgrade in 1905. Some of the most eminent intellectual figures of the Serbian culture as a whole − Đura Daničić, Bogdan Popović, Jovan Skerlić − were among the scholars who taught at the Department. During the World War II, the entire University of Belgrade was closed. The Department of Comparative Literature and Literary theory was re-established in 1954, at the initiative of Professor Vojislav Đurić, first as a seminar, and then as a department of its own standing, first at the Faculty of Philosophy, and then at the Faculty of Philology, where it belongs today.

Regarding the tradition of literary and theoretical research, as well as the tradition of teaching comparative literature at the University of Belgrade, we would like to celebrate the anniversary with academic discussions and presentations of papers dealing with the following topics:

1. Comparative Literature between Cultural Studies and Philology 2. Trans-cultural phenomena: National Traditions and Comparative Literature 3. Comparative Literature and the New Worlds (challenges of the new geography, new theories and

terminologies, gender theories, digital humanities, transmedia studies) 4. In Dialogue with Canonic Authors / Canonic Authors in Dialogue We kindly ask you to send your proposal and completed application form by e-mail (in rich text and pdf

format) until 1 June 2014 at the e-address: [email protected] The acceptance of your proposal will be confirmed by 1 July 2014. The final program of the conference will be posted at the Faculty of Philology website on 1 October 2014.

The publication of peer-reviewed Conference Proceedings will follow. The papers shouldn’t exceed 22000 characters with spaces. We kindly ask you to limit your conference communication to 15 minutes. The participation fee is 40 Euros and the payment instructions will be sent with the confirmation of acceptance.

Looking forward to your proposals,
