Chapter 4
• George Stratton – created special glasses, to show that one sees a world that closely related to ones body. • Wanted to be able to illustrate that the
togetherness that occurs in a more physical level, beyond just two flat objects coming together to form a physical object. • He came to the conclusion that once one enters
the virtual world, a sensation occurs that’s meaningful, correlative, liable and habitual.
Blending the Real and the Virtual
•Merleau-Ponty- To his observations, the body is a place that expresses movement and a medium for perception of the world. •When the body has an experience,
perception and meaning are put into play by thought • This idea gave insight to others as to
what kind of response entering the virtual world did and caused to people
Chapter 4
• The process of embodiment is essential for communicating in virtual environments and being able to interact. • The ability to touch, hear, and see are
probably the most important senses to lead to full submission into a virtual world.
Blending the Real and the Virtual
•An Australian Artist Stelarc, states that when in a virtual world one stops assuming their personal entity and takes on a new one once inside the virtual reality• This new entity is a fragment of the person
they wish to be or wish to be more alike • Example: That YouTube video we saw in
class with the couple that fell in love
Chapter 4
• Experiments where conducted to show what are the results and or the events that take place in the brain when being in a virtual world • Results: • The brain believes whatever is seen over
anything else. • The brain will feel fake limbs as if they
are part of the actual body
Blending the Real and the Virtual
•Media was discussed as another form of virtual reality in the form that when presented with a news cast you are being sucked into a “world” of information and are putting your surroundings on hold to pay attention to the news. Also in the form that T.V shows serve as a world where we get caught up in them, taking us into a different world per say.
