Each year the Rotman Investors’ Report pays special tribute to the alumniand friends who help the School succeed, in a fiercely competitive environ-ment, through their financial and volunteer support. In the past year, wehave actively recruited and retained talented professors who are growingour global reputation for outstanding teaching and research. Leading faculty, who provide an unparalleled educational experience, are keeping theRotman School at the head of the class in global thought leadership and wehave our donors and friends to thank for fueling our momentum.
On behalf of the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the Rotman School, I want to expresshow grateful we are for your unwavering support.Your backing is more important than everbefore as we revolutionize business education through Integrative ThinkingTM.
But the gains are not only being felt in teaching and research, but also in enrolment. This pastyear, we welcomed a two-year MBA class of 264 students: one of the largest in our history. Inthe coming years, graduate enrollment is expected to grow by 50 per cent and your supportwill become more important than ever before as we work to accommodate that growth andprovide an outstanding MBA experience.
Whether your contribution to the school was an annual or an endowed gift, or a gift of yourtime, your support had an immediate impact. The Rotman School is thriving as one of theworld’s leading business schools; its future becomes brighter each and every day with the sup-port of friends and alumni like you.
While the Rotman School is flourishing, our journey of innovation and excellence is not over. This fall we will launch an ambitious new fundraising campaign that will take the School tonew heights. An Investment in the FutureThe annual Vision Fund campaign is one of the key fundraisinginitiatives at the Rotman School. Annual gifts from our alumniand friends support the School’s top strategic prioritiesincluding faculty research and recruitment, student and alum-ni programs and curriculum development.
In 2007–2008 our goals were to not only increase donationsto the Vision Fund, but to also increase the number ofdonors. We are pleased to report that we surpassed our goalin both areas. We raised over $425,000 in unrestricted sup-port for the School, up 27 per cent from 2006–2007.Wealso increased our donors by 26 per cent, to nearly 1,000supporters who made an annual contribution.
All of this growth means even more success for the RotmanSchool. Support for the Vision Fund enables us to adapt quicklyand remain competitive by giving our leaders the flexibilitythey need to fund both growing and emerging initiatives. Someexamples of the impact the Vision Fund had include; increasingthe class size of our MBA program by five per cent, hiring 15new faculty members from around the world in 2007–2008(including renowned urban thinker Richard Florida) andintroducing the Design Study Tour which took Rotman stu-dents to the Stanford Institute of Design as well as a numberof design-friendly firms in Silicon Valley.
Additionally, the generosity our alumni and friends show insupporting the Vision Fund helps provide a base for futuregifts. Our donors feel that their gifts are a worthwhile invest-ment.Their continued support inspires others to want tostep up and be a part of something exciting, whether it is giv-ing $50 for the first time, increasing their annual support tothe leadership level, or remembering Rotman in their estateplanning. Gifts to the annual fund are a significant part ofhow we move forward and take Rotman to the next level.
Alumni SupportAlumni are key ambassadors for the Rotman School.Theysupport us in many ways, including making gifts to the annualRotman Vision Fund. In 2007–2008 we were pleased to seemore alumni than ever before making a smart investment bycontributing to the Rotman School. Here are just a few of theways our alumni help contribute to the growth of the annualfund:• In the area of leadership annual giving (gifts of $1,000
–$25,000), we saw giving increase by 26 per cent and thenumber of donors increase by 19 per cent. The majority ofthis growth is in alumni giving
• University of Toronto students, calling on behalf of theRotman School, raised nearly $45,000 from our alumni —
The Rotman Vision Fund
an increase of nearly 40 per cent over last year• Since the Vision Fund’s inception in 2002, alumni partici-
pation has grown by five per cent.
Student GivingFor a second year, the Graduate Student Giving Campaigngenerated gifts to continue improving interaction betweenstudents and alumni at Rotman. Thanks to the generosity ofso many students, the School can now build upon the successof recent events, enhancing both content and participationfor students and alumni alike. As well, the campaign revenuewill help facilitate the redesign of the My C.C.C. section ofthe Student Portal, providing quicker and easier access toalumni volunteer contacts.
Faculty/Staff CampaignAs it has in each of the past four years, this spring’sFaculty/Staff Campaign set a new fundraising record.Thisunique opportunity, which allows those who work at theSchool to support Rotman and its strategic goals, generatedjust under $95,000. 51 per cent of faculty and staff partici-pated in the campaign.
This year’s Faculty/Staff Campaign was made possible throughthe tremendous efforts of our six volunteer co-chairs.
Returning as the Senior Management Chair was RichardPowers, assistant dean and executive director, MBA programs.Faculty Co-Chairs were David Dunne, adjunct professor ofmarketing and co-director, Rotman Teaching EffectivenessCentre, and Eric Kirzner, professor of finance and John H.Watson Chair in Value Investing.
