The Investment Readiness Programme offers streamlined training aimed at helping you develop a strong business proposition that will attract the remaining funds to run your project and grow your business.

Investment Readiness Programme

What does the programme aim to achieve? • The fundamental business case is stable• The business has a robust and detailed

financial model• The business can present these in a way

that is likely to attract investment

What it entails? There is an initial assessment and follow-up meeting discussing your business proposition by an experienced investor and in financials by a chartered accountant and director. This acts as book ends to a core programme of workshops in investor readiness and presentation skills.

Who is eligible? All stage 2 applicants of the Harwell Space Launchpad II are eligible for this Investment Readiness Programme.

The programme is also free for you to attend.

Don’t have the time? Over a 6 week period there will be 5 day workshops and 3 x 1 hour mentoring sessions. These have been designed to deliver the essentials to help you raise funds.

Investment Readiness Programme

Investor Assessment Financial Workshop and Assessment

Location: Satellite Applications Catapult Workshop Time: 9:00 – 17:30

An Investor health check early on in the process so you can make any structural changes that are necessary. Delivered by experienced Investor, Howard Sarna.

An initial workshop followed up with a one to one mentoring session in assisting you in creating robust financial projections. Delivered by Chartered Director and Chartered Accountant, Guy Van Zwanenberg.

Presentation Skills Workshop

Location: Satellite Applications Catapult Time: 9:00 – 17:30

This two day workshop will increase your likelihood of success by giving you some of the most useful communication tools and feedback possible to really ‘sell’ your business to investors.

At this intensive workshop you will enhance the following skills:

• The secret of Great Entrepreneur Communicators• How to have greater Impact when meeting Investors• How to influence them to invest in your company• How to gain their trust rapidly

And get to practice your pitch to perfection.

Day 1 Morning: The Investor and Investment ProcessUnderstand what investors are, what they are looking for AND WHAT THEY ARE NOT LOOKING FOR. How to find them, research them and approach them.

The Elevator Pitch; develop it and how to use it. The full Pitch, develop it and how to use it. The Business Plan, Information Memorandum and Investment Flyer; what are they and how do we use them. The Investor’s perspective; an investor explains what they look for, what they see and the common mistakes that companies make.

Afternoon: The Pitch Practice and develop your investment pitch in front of other delegates and external contributors who have recent experience of successfully raising investment.

Example Pitch. A successful entrepreneur will make the pitch that won them the investment they were looking for.

Day 2 Morning: What Next? Having delivered the pitch to an investor, what are the next steps? Understand how to make an operational pitch or demonstration. The negotiation phase and how to reach a fair deal. What happens if the deal isn’t a good one? The Due Diligence process and how to make it as painless as possible. Preparing for Due Diligence. A practitioner explains how to create a Data Room to simplify the process and increase the chance of closing the investment.

Afternoon: Legal Matters and Pitching to the experts Gain an understanding of the legal process surrounding investment including the rules under Section 21 of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000.

Pitch to a panel of real investors and get their valuable feedback.

Meet the Cluster

Launchpad supports the strengthening of clusters of innovative companies in specific sectors and geographical locations. Due to the concentration of expertise within these clusters of businesses, there are often advantages of speed and knowledge transfer.

The Technology Entrepreneur Forum (TEF) is an invitation only forum aimed at board level members of High Tech SMEs. This is run every other month, alternating with the Harwell Oxford Business Breakfast (HOBB).

Harwell Oxford Business Breakfast (HOBB) aims to keep business incubation and entrepreneurship at the heart of the campus community. The event attracts representatives from both local and national business community, suppliers, academics and support functions.

SpaceTech SpaceTech is an annual event held at Harwell and is a collaboration between STFC, the European Space Agency and the Enterprise Europe Network. It is a space technology conference and business matchmaking event with the aim to create UK and European connections between space research and successful commercial business development.

Satuccino Satuccino is for all companies engaged with the Satellite Applications Catapult to find out what their neighbours are up to, share ideas and get an update on Catapult activities.

Space Cakes Space Cakes is a networking event held at Harwell on a monthly basis. The event usually attracts around 20 people including: ESA BIC tenants, ESA BIC alumni, I-TAC tenants located within the Space Cluster and STFC staff from Campus Development and RAL Space. Attendees are provided with cake and refreshments and given the opportunity to catch up with others on campus.

Ashby House is a small management consultancy providing business growth advice. Its two key sectors are, in the case of businesses with a turnover greater than £5m pa, addressed directly or, for businesses smaller than that, via one of the public sector support agencies. Current clients include the European Space Agency, the Science and Technology Facilities Council, Innovate UK, the Satellite Applications Catapult and the Universities of Exeter and Chester.

Howard Sa rna

Guy is a Chartered Director and Chartered Accountant with extensive commercial and professional experience with complex international technology, manufacturing and consultancy organisations. The breadth of experience that he has built up ensures that he is able to quickly understand the key drivers of a business and accordingly has become extremely adaptable. He has floated, and is on the boards of, a number of PLCs.

Ben Partridge

Ben has spent over 30 years in the IT and telecoms industry. During the 1990’s he developed a small UK based mainframe software distribution company with offices in Watford into an international business with offices in the UK, USA, Canada, Holland and Australia. Ben is now Entrepreneur in Residence for the Satellite Applications Catapult as well as providing business leadership support to some of the UK’s leading business accelerators as well as being closely involved with angel investor networks and the Greater Manchester Business Finance Service.

Guy Van Zwanenberg

Howard is an Angel investor with hands-on engagement with investee businesses. A highly experienced and innovative senior executive leader with a wide range of both hands-on and board-level involvement from UK start-up to NYSE global corporate, across a variety of industry sectors he has a track record of successful exits.

The presentation skills workshop will be delivered by Rick Salmon from Quickminds. Quickminds is a team of highly skilled coaches and facilitatorswho specialise in the radical transformation of communication. More specifically, we help entrepreneurs and VCs improve their own performance through individual coaching and workshops in a number of key areas. Since 2005 we have helped clients raise over $2.5bn in funds. We work with several leading global organisations as well as advising early-stage ventures.
