The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra performed at our school on Monday, 22 May. I have had the privilege of working with them for 23 years. Besides performing in the World Symphony Series at the Playhouse, the orchestra also performs for functions, business

workshops and run an Education and Development Program reaching students throughout KZN.

Our students were delighted to hear music of all genres. One of the questions from a Preparatory student was whether the Orchestra could play a piece from Indiana Jones - the answer was that with the score (sheet music) in front of them, the members of the Orchestra can play any genre of music. The concert started off with the Star Wars Medley, a brief introduction to all instruments showing off the string section with Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Gounod's piece for Woodwind and Brass, a percussion demo on Timpani and Drum kit by our own Stephan Pechoux, Pirates of the Caribbean medley, Pharrell's Happy, ending off with our students singing the National Anthem accompanied by the Orchestra.

Recently Daniel Watson was asked to perform with the orchestra at an RMB concert for their clients as well as the Minister of Arts and Culture. He performed "What a Wonderful World", made famous by Louis Armstrong. The orchestra asked Daniel if he would like to be part of the Education concert. The more musicians perform the more they become used to being on stage in front of their peers or other audience. This is valuable and any opportunity should be taken whenever possible.

Please support the orchestra at the Playhouse for the World Symphony Series on Thursday evenings at 19:30. The first of these concerts is on 01 June where the Glee Choir from Yale University will be performing, along with Brahms Piano Concerto No 1 by Liebrecht Vanbeckenvoort on piano and Beethoven's Mass in C Major. There will be a bus departing from our school at 18:15 for any students interested in going - returning at 22:00. ~ Mrs Nina Watson ~

The KZN Young

Performers’

Concert

Robyn Gillespie (Grade 12) performed at the KZN Young Performers Concert at the Playhouse Drama Theatre on Saturday, 20 May, as she was deemed to be one of “the most promising young KZN performers” to be accompanied by Africa’s premier orchestra, under the baton of Naum Rousine.

Robyn Gillespie – 18 (voice) Teacher: Dr Ros Conrad BACH – Magnificat, BWV 243, D major: Et Exultavit Spiritus Meus Robyn started singing at the age of 5 and has achieved Grade 8 in violin. She plays in the KZN Youth Orchestra and is currently working towards the Grade 8 voice exam. In 2013, Robyn was awarded trophies for both voice and violin at the Queensburgh Festival, and she has excelled in the vocal sections of the Queensburgh Festival and the Ethekwini Eisteddfod every year since then. In 2016 Robyn won the overall trophy for voice in the SASMT Achievers’ and Senior Students’ concerts, as well as the Dante Alighieri Society and Durban Symphonic Choir. She has sung with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra at the Crawford Urban Pops and the Crawford La Lucia Soireé. Robyn plans to continue with her Music studies at Stellenbosch or UCT in 2018.

Jamie Samuel’s take on the Rice Baby Project …. There was a lot of laughing,

complaining, blood, sweat and tears, but in the end the rice baby project was an

interesting and enjoyable one. Everyone learnt a lot about teen-pregnancy and

the heavy responsibilities of parenthood that we didn’t know before. I enjoyed

going to deliver the rice and clothes to the orphanage and playing with the

children there. It was rewarding to see the empty shelves stocked with rice and

to know that we’ve done some good.

Ethan Luyt felt they learnt about teenage pregnancy in a very interesting way

this term. They carried a 5 kilogram bag of rice around dressed in baby clothes

and anything else needed to make the bag look like a baby. It was quite a

challenging project because it was very tiring, however the experience was

enriching because it taught us about the responsibilities of having a baby.

On completion of the project, a group of Grade 10 students and teachers visited

Ithemba Labasha to deliver the rice. The students were amazed to see all the

people who were going to benefit from this donation. The children were so happy

when they saw the students and it is wonderful to know that the rice is going

to a good cause.

Calden Gibbs (Grade 11) held a very successful fundraiser on Saturday, 20 May with the help of his family and dance teachers Mrs Victoria Andrews (CCNC) and Ms Natashia Hooman (FootworX). With an exciting programme of live music and energetic dance the audience were both entertained and enthralled by the performances. Calden however was the star attraction with his superb dance performances from the opening “Hip Hop” through to the close with “Lyrical” performed and choreographed by him. ~ Mr Les Nielson ~

Interview with ANITA, age 16 in Grade 10

KZN Representative Sport: ACTION NETBALL

What is your favourite sport?

Definitely Action Netball.

Which sport are you representing KZN in this year?

Action Netball.

Have you ever played any other KZN Sport?

No I haven’t, but I enjoy trail running.

Which school was your favourite match against this

year?

The mixed action netball match against La Lucia,

we beat them by one point it was so close. It was

an intense match and I loved that we didn’t give

up and that’s why we won.

Which school do you enjoy playing against each year?

Kuswag, their netball is always very well thought out with a clear plan, and they always play

hard and clean netball so I know I’m always in for a good one against them.

What is training like at Crawford?

Training is always fun and we have some good laughs together. I think that is one of

the reasons why we are doing well.

Tell us something about one of your coaches?

Miss Nell always plans our sessions really well according to the

needs of the team, she makes us work hard as well as have

some fun, and so it’s a good combination.

U16 NETBALL TOURNAMENT

On Saturday, 20 May, Crawford College North Coast hosted their 4th annual U16 age group Netball

Tournament. This year saw 13 teams compete for gold in the competitive section and 7 teams in the

non-competitive section, making this the biggest tournament yet. The weather couldn’t have been

more perfect for almost 60 matches taking place during the tournament. Visitors experienced our

unique North Coast style with parents setting up camp under beach umbrellas on the banks, and vibey

music playing throughout the day. The CNC U16 team fared really well in their pool, winning 4 out

of their 6 matches, placing 5th overall.

Our amazing students were the backbone of the tournament. Anri Loots and Esther Park ran a tight ship at the main

table, making sure all matches started on time, making announcements and working out the rankings. Our amazing

DJ’s, Angelo Martini and Si Teng Wu, made sure we had good sound and music. The U14 netball girls, under the

leadership of Nkanyezi Gcaba, were next to the courts, keeping perfect score.
