Executive Director’s Corner

Celebrating the past, impacting the future could be our theme every year. We often accomplish our mission to make dreams come true through the power of endowments, meaning that donor legacies established in the past will continue to have impact far into the future. Your kind and generous gifts made to the Foundation keep us growing and keeps us strong. In turn, the foundation is able to fund programs and projects that enhance the quality of life in Noble County. This year the Noble County Community Foundation will administer and award over 45 scholarships to students throughout Noble County, including one Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships. The scholarships to be awarded will range in value from $200 to full tuition and required fees, with a combined total value of over $222,248.00 Scholarship awards don’t just happen…. Behind all scholarship awards you will find true champions – those individuals responsible for having created the awards, thus providing the funding to assist aspiring students in accomplishing their dreams. Scholarship funds are created to honor the memory of a loved one; continue the legacy of a vocation or career path about which the donor is passionate; pay-it-forward when the donor has received scholarship support; honor an alma mater; or share the donor’s good fortune with future generations. Whatever the reason, the result is the same, and countless students from Noble County owe a debt of gratitude to these champions of educational pursuits. Our applications will be on line Nov. 16th and we hope to see many Noble County students applying for these scholarships. See more details on page 9. Sincerely,

Linda Speakman-Yerick

It’s Here!

Foundation Engages Community with New Platform – “Noble County Gives” The Community Foundation is proud and excited to introduce a new platform to allow agencies and organizations to connect with donors to learn about the needs in our community. Nonprofits will have the ability to go to our web site and request to post a need, with that they can also include pictures or a video to share with those who visit our website. Donors can search a variety of categories, organizations and individuals needing funds to provide important community services and programs. The platform is a place to learn about community needs, read about projects that need funding, and how much money is needed. Examples might be a 3rd grade teacher wanting to give her students an art class, a local group providing education about homelessness, or an animal shelter needing food. Learn about funding requests then add your donation to those from other generous donors. Whether you give $10 or $100, any size gift made through the community platform will impact the community. Rest assured that this platform is a safe, secure place where you can make your donation. This is unique for the foundation to provide an

www.NobleCountyCF.org 5

unmatchable opportunity to touch new generations and lives within Noble County. Each funding requests or need will be posted for approximately 90 days with current information posted as to the amount raised to date the details of the organizations need and include stories of how those needs have been met. New requests will be added regularly and the success stories will multiply, so be sure to visit often. For information on how to post a need, contact Margarita White at 260-894-3335 or e-mail [email protected]

Please visit us at: www.NobleCountyCF.org

Just by clicking the tab “Noble County Gives” from our website will allow anyone to see firsthand what some of the immediate needs are in Noble County. (See sample above.)

Year End Gifts—The Year is Almost Over

A Gift Today Means the Future is Yours There are many ways you can make a gift before the end of the year that will benefit you now, and in the future. These benefits include tax savings on this year’s return, income for the future, and bypass of capital gains tax on the sale of your property. Here are just a few of the options you might want to consider: Gift of Your Property Do you have CDs, stocks or bonds that are producing little or no return? Why not make a gift of these low-performing assets to us, and receive a charitable deduction? You can also give your real estate, art or other property. Please call us to learn the amount of taxes you might be able to save for a gift of these and other assets. Gift of Your Property for Income If you are looking for income in the future, why not make a gift of your property to fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust? Your property can be sold tax-free, and you may receive income for the rest of your life. With a charitable gift annuity, this income is fixed so there is the possibility that some of your payment will be tax-free.

www.NobleCountyCF.org 7

Future Property Gift The benefit of charitable giving is that there are gifts everyone can make. If you don’t want to give your stock or real estate today, you can still enjoy your property during your lifetime while making a gift to us through your will or trust. A bequest of your property will provide your estate with an estate tax charitable deduction, which means the savings can go tor your loved ones. To learn more about these options for year-end gifts or view an illustration of the benefits of making a gift of your property, please call the community foundation to find out more information 260-894-3335.

This information is not intended as tax, legal or financial advice. Gift results may vary, consult your personal financial advisor for information specific to your situation.

Cromwell-Kimmell Lions Club Fund

By Alicia Stauffer and Carol Stults

This fund was started by Carol Stults, a 25 year member of the Cromwell-Kimmell Lions Club. Carol inherited some money, so she decided to start a fund at the Noble County Community Foundation. She said, “If you put it *money+ into a bank, it’s not going to do anything, but if you put it in a community foundation, it would be there forever. The Cromwell-Kimmell Lion’s Club is very involved in the community. They try to help as many as they can and have fundraisers so that they can give back to the community. Valentine Senior Citizen Party, fruit basket give-away, scholarships, collection of old eye glasses, Bingo Feather Party, and the Stone’s Trace Fundraiser are some of the ways that the Cromwell-Kimmell Lion’s Club reaches out to the community. The Lion’s Club also trains children to reach out to their community through the Leo Program (Little Lions). Carol Stults and Lorena Karst are the two advisors for the Leo Program in the Cromwell-Kimmell area, which is where children 12-18 can participate in community outreaches.

Carol appreciates Noble County, because it’s where she has lived all of her life and she thinks it’s a great place to live. She grew up on a farm and was a participant in 4-H. Her dad, George, was a farmer, a bus driver, and a former Lion. Her mother, Althea, was a homemaker. Carol has one sister, Lois Gene, and she now resides in Illinois. Carol is also a member of the Noble Legacy Society, a program developed for those who intend to leave a planned gift through the Noble County Community Foundation.

Did You Know… Good planning requires good information?

When you visit our website, you will find helpful estate planning information to assist you in creating the plan that is right for you. Rising property values, growth of investments, various types of life insurance as well as changing tax laws require proper planning for the future. Without a plan that is right for you, an unnecessary amount of your assets may go to state and federal government in taxes. Your remaining assets may go to individuals other than those you prefer to benefit. Guardianship of minor children may be left for the laws of the state to determine.

Mid-America Windmill Museum Kendallville, Indiana

Volunteers and supporters established an endowment fund for the Mid-America Windmill Museum and Historical Society, Inc. in December 1995.

A major purpose for the Mid-America Windmill museum was to display all windmills manufactured throughout the Midwest at Kendallville’s Flint and Walling Company and preserve the history of wind power.

The Museum has expanded to displaying 52 windmills since its inception in 1992. The powerful heart beat of dreams, passion, and work of the windmill enthusiasts and volunteers is felt as guests walk the winding windmill path. The museum is located at 732 S. Allen Chapel Road, Kendallville, Indiana. Phone: 260-347-2334.

Dr. David and Alvena VanMeter Scholarship

By Alicia Stauffer and Alvena VanMeter

Dr. “Doc” David VanMeter was born in Monroeville, Indiana and raised in Allen County, Indiana. He graduated from New Haven High School; attended Blackburn College while in the Navy; and graduated from Michigan State University. He had a Type A personality, because he could get things done when they needed to be done, and this was important to his profession as a veterinarian. Alvena was born and raised in Allen County, Indiana. She graduated from New Haven High School; and then attended Michigan State University. She has a passive and patient personality and is devoted to her family. She worked as an office assistant and then became a homemaker. They were blessed with four daughters and one son. Their son was killed when he was only 14 years old, which was a huge tragedy to their family. The VanMeter’s were also blessed with five grandchildren. Both David and Alvena sought to be loving servants and raised their family to have the same values by putting service before self. One of their goals in life was to lead a good, Christian life. They were also examples to their children by being involved in the community. David was active in all organizations and wanted to leave his community better than he found it. Alvena is very family oriented and was a good helpmate to her husband and a good mother to her children.

The late Dr. David VanMeter, Jr. and his wife, Alvena.

www.NobleCountyCF.org 23

Dr. VanMeter passed away on September 5, 2009. He and Alvena had been married for 63 years. He was a well respected veterinarian in Noble County and contributed much to the Noble County Community. Alvena says she appreciates Noble County because of “the people who live there.”

Doc was one of the Noble County Community Foundation’s founding board members from 1991-1993. Doc and Alvena became Noble Legacy Society members in 2007 by leaving a planned gift in their will through the Noble County Community Foundation.

The scholarship was established in June 1993 by the Albion Rotary Club. The scholarship is for one Central Noble high school senior entering a two year or four year college or vocational program as full time student. Must have a high school GPA average of at least 3.0 or higher. The Scholarship is given to student who is pursuing a career in veterinary medicine, agriculture or the medical field, prioritized in that order.

A Gift from the Ruth N. Fitzpatrick Memorial Fund

Pictured is a portion of the books purchased with a recent grant from the Ruth N. Fitzpatrick Memorial Fund that was established at the Noble County Community Foundation by Ruth's daughter and son-in-law, Kelli S. and G. Steven Burrill. The fund was established in 2008 to provide support to the Kendallville Public Library to purchase materials for the children's collection. The library was able to fill holes in series, purchase new series and fulfill an amazing number of patron requests for specific books. All the books are marked inside with a "book plate" indicating the purchase of the book was made possible by the Ruth N. Fitzpatrick Memorial Fund. The Ruth N. Fitzpatrick Memorial Fund welcomes additional gifts to continue Ruth's legacy of providing materials to the children's collection. Gifts to the Ruth N. Fitzpatrick Memorial Fund can be made payable to the Noble County Community Foundation, 1599 Lincolnway South, Ligonier IN 46767 or call the community foundation at 260-894-3335.
