Investigation 4 – day 1

•Date: 9/4•LT: I can compare expansion,

contraction, and compression.•Sponge: What do you think

happens when you heat air in a hot air balloon?

To do…

Today is a 100 point lab day!

Kinetic Energy—What is it? Copy in index!

Kinetic Energy: the energy of motion

Questions to discuss…•Are particles moving in a solid? In a liquid? In a gas?•How would heat affect their movement? Their kinetic energy?

•Examples: •What has more KE…a cup of hot coffee or an ice cube?•What has more KE…a speeding car or a stopped car?

Explain the KE in each!

Gas Expansion/Contraction

Demo • https://www.youtube.com/

watch?v=ZPErStqSSMk

Be prepared to draw a representation of the lab on NB 43 - 45!

NB 43

NB page 43Answer Part 4: describe what happens to the balloon.

NB page 45

Gas Expansion/Contraction: BIG IDEAS!

• During expansion (air heated), particles DO NOT increase in size – the space in between the particles increases!!!

• During contraction (heat removed), particles DO NOT decrease in size – the space in between the particles decreases!!!

• Before we studied compression…what is the difference between compression and contraction?

NB 47

• We heated and cooled a gas to cause contraction and expansion.• Do you think liquids contract and expand? What

about solids?• Cold Water _______ Hot Water ____________*Note: R = resting level, C = Cold level, H = Hot levelTurn to number 2 first.

Liquid Expansion/Contraction Demo pg 47, 49https://www.youtube.com/watch?

v=ISV2L_LQzYc

•What happened when the bottle system was placed in the hot water? Draw and explain.

NB PAGE 75: #1• What happened when you placed your bottle system

in cold water. Draw and explain: #1.

NB PAGE 77Complete #3-5 using full sentences and details.

This is worth some candy….•What real life tool do we use that works because liquids expand and contract?

Solid Expansion/Contraction Demo

Brass sphere/ring demonstration: The sphere and ring are both made of a metal called brass. •How can I easily make the ball fit in to the sphere?•How can I make it impossible for the ball to fit in to the sphere?• http://www.fossweb.com/delegate/ssi-wdf-ucm-webContent/Contribution%20Folders/FOSS/multimedia_ms_1E/ChemicalInteractions/teacher_videos/teachervid_4_3.html (FOSS demo if necessary)

Investigation 4 – day 2

•Date: 9/8•LT: I can explain the effect of heating

and cooling on gas, liquid, and solid particles.

•Sponge: When heated, a gas ______. When cooled, a gas _______. Choose expands or contracts for each!

To do….•Agenda

Multimedia Review from yesterday!

• http://www.fossweb.com/delegate/ssi-wdf-ucm-webContent/Contribution%20Folders/FOSS/multimedia_ms_1E/ChemicalInteractions/molecules/particles.html (FOSS: particles in solid, liquid, and gas)

• Watch for…• KE• Expansion • Contraction

AP: Copy kinetic definitions in index!•Compression: The decrease of gas volume

as a result of force (volume gets smaller because pushed upon).•Contraction: The decrease of volume due to decreased KE of particles (volume gets smaller because heat removed).•Expansion: The increase of volume due to increased KE of particles (volume gets bigger because heated up).

Comp: Copy kinetic definitions in index!

•Contraction: The decrease of volume due to decreased KE, volume gets smaller because cooled!•Expansion: The increase of volume due to increased KE, volume gets bigger because heated!

Real Life Examples

• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UE_cxd7TEw• Gas: air in sports balls (basketball, soccer, etc), air

in balloon• Liquid: alcohol in a thermometer, rings on fingers• Solids: metal lids on jars, bridge joints, sagging

power lines in summer

Close Reading – NB 51

• Look at number 5, we are going to use that strategy to break down the reading. Turn to NB 52 to see a better explanation.• I will annotate my reading with you. Lets start on

NB 53. Anywhere there is a number, a new CHUNK is starting and we need to summarize it!• Gimme a second to flip on my document camera

If time….

• More real life examples!• https://www.youtube.com/watch?
