Soft-Drink Investigation
It’s party time…
Our first challenge will be to find out how much powder I should mix with 1000ml of water to make a good-tasting drink.
Is the soft drink a mixture?
Is the soft drink a solution?
How could you test to determine if it is solution?
Soft-Drink Investigation
How would you know if you had made a saturated soft-drink solution?
Lets take a look at solutions 1 and 2
List all the ways that solutions 1 and 2 are the same and different.
Ingredients, appearance, and taste.

Concentration
Which soft-drink solution tasted sweeter?
When a soft-drink solution tastes sweet (and looks dark), it is a concentrated solution.
When it tastes weak (and looks light), it is a dilute solution.
Soft-Drink Investigation
Lets take a look at solutions A and B
A B
Soft-Drink Investigation
Concentration refers to the amount of material dissolved in a measure (volume) of liquid. The more material dissolved in a given amount of liquid, the more concentrated the solution.
What happens to the soft-drink solution when you increase the amount of powder in a given amount of water?

Investigation 3 Part 2Salt Concentration
How do you make a concentrated soft-drink solution? A dilute soft-drink solution?
How can you tell which of tow soft-drink solutions is more concentrated?
What are some other solutions that vary in concentration?
Investigation 3 Part 2Salt Concentration
Today we are going to investigate the concentration of salt solutions. But there’s a problem, we are not permitted to taste salt solutions, and they are colorless.
How can you determine which salt solution is more concentrated?
Can you use a balance to determine concentration?
Investigation 3 Part 2Mystery Solutions
Do these three solutions have different concentrations?
In your groups, you will plan a step-by-step procedure for solving the concentration mystery.
Your going to write your plans in your journals.
Investigation 3 Part 2Mystery Solutions
Getters #1 get three cups
Label the cups by their color
Transfer 50 ml of each solution into a labeled cup.
Let the sleuthing begin!!
What did your group decide??
